On a hybrid continuum-kinetic model for complex fluids

In the present work, we first introduce a general framework for modelling complex multiscale fluids and then focus on the derivation and analysis of a new hybrid continuum-kinetic model. In particular, we combine conservation of mass and momentum for an isentropic macroscopic model with a kinetic representation of the microscopic behaviour. After introducing a small scale of interest, we compute the complex stress tensor by means of Irving-Kirkwood formula. The latter requires an expansion of kinetic distribution around an equilibrium state and a successive homogenization over the fast in time and small in space scale dynamics. For a new hybrid continuum-kinetic model the results of linear stability analysis indicates a conditional stability in the relevant low-speed regimes and instability for high speed regimes for higher modes. Extensive numerical experiments confirm that the proposed multiscale model can reflect new phenomena of complex fluids not being present in standard Newtonian fluids. Consequently, the proposed general technique can be successfully used to derive new interesting systems combining the macro and micro structure of a given physical problem.

Optimal control of epidemic spreading in presence of social heterogeneity

The spread of COVID-19 has been thwarted in most countries through non-pharmaceutical interventions. In particular, the most effective measures in this direction have been the stay-at-home and closure strategies of businesses and schools. However, population-wide lockdowns are far from being optimal carrying heavy economic consequences. Therefore, there is nowadays a strong interest in designing more efficient restrictions. In this work, starting from a recent kinetic-type model which takes into account the heterogeneity described by the social contact of individuals, we analyze the effects of introducing an optimal control strategy into the system, to limit selectively the mean number of contacts and reduce consequently the number of infected cases. Thanks to a data-driven approach, we show that this new mathematical model permits to assess the effects of the social limitations. Finally, using the model introduced here and starting from the available data, we show the effectivity of the proposed selective measures to dampen the epidemic trends.

Wealth distribution under the spread of infectious diseases

We develop a mathematical framework to study the economic impact of infectious diseases by integrating epidemiological dynamics with a kinetic model of wealth exchange. The multi-agent description leads to study the evolution over time of a system of kinetic equations for the wealth densities of susceptible, infectious and recovered individuals, whose proportions are driven by a classical compartmental model in epidemiology. Explicit calculations show that the spread of the disease seriously affects the distribution of wealth, which, unlike the situation in the absence of epidemics, can converge towards a stationary state with a bimodal form. Furthermore, simulations confirm the ability of the model to describe different phenomena characteristics of economic trends in situations compromised by the rapid spread of an epidemic, such as the unequal impact on the various wealth classes and the risk of a shrinking middle class.

Implicit-Explicit Runge-Kutta schemes for the Boltzmann-Poisson system for semiconductors

In this paper we develop a class of Implicit-Explicit Runge-Kutta schemes for solving the multi-scale semiconductor Boltzmann equation. The relevant scale which characterizes this kind of problems is the diffusive scaling. This means that, in the limit of zero mean free path, the system is governed by a drift-diffusion equation. Our aim is to develop a method which accurately works for the different regimes encountered in general semiconductor simulations: the kinetic, the intermediate and the diffusive one. Moreover, we want to overcome the restrictive time step conditions of standard time integration techniques when applied to the solution of this kind of phenomena without any deterioration in the accuracy. As a result, we obtain high order time and space discretization schemes which do not suffer from the usual parabolic stiffness in the diffusive limit. We show different numerical results which permit to appreciate the performances of the proposed schemes.

Asymptotic preserving Implicit-Explicit Runge-Kutta methods for non linear kinetic equations

We discuss Implicit-Explicit (IMEX) Runge Kutta methods which are particularly adapted to stiff kinetic equations of Boltzmann type. We consider both the case of easy invertible collision operators and the challenging case of Boltzmann collision operators. We give sufficient conditions in order that such methods are asymptotic preserving and asymptotically accurate. Their monotonicity properties are also studied. In the case of the Boltzmann operator, the methods are based on the introduction of a penalization technique for the collision integral. This reformulation of the collision operator permits to construct penalized IMEX schemes which work uniformly for a wide range of relaxation times avoiding the expensive implicit resolution of the collision operator. Finally we show some numerical results which confirm the theoretical analysis.
