Multiband nodeless superconductivity near the charge-density-wave quantum critical point in ZrTe3-xSex

Recently it was found that selenium doping can suppress the charge-density-wave (CDW) order and induce bulk superconductivity in ZrTe3_3. The observed superconducting dome suggests the existence of a CDW quantum critical point (QCP) in ZrTe3−x_{3-x}Sex_x near x≈x \approx 0.04. To elucidate its superconducting state near the CDW QCP, we measure the thermal conductivity of two ZrTe3−x_{3-x}Sex_x single crystals (xx = 0.044 and 0.051) down to 80 mK. For both samples, the residual linear term κ0/Tκ_0/T at zero field is negligible, which is a clear evidence for nodeless superconducting gap. Furthermore, the field dependence of κ0/Tκ_0/T manifests multigap behavior. These results demonstrate multiple nodeless superconducting gaps in ZrTe3−x_{3-x}Sex_x, which indicates conventional superconductivity despite of the existence of a CDW QCP.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd3As2

The recently discovered Dirac and Weyl semimetals are new members of topological materials. Starting from them, topological superconductivity may be achieved, e.g. by carrier doping or applying pressure. Here we report high-pressure resistance and X-ray diffraction study of the three-dimensional topological Dirac semimetal Cd3As2. Superconductivity with Tc ~ 2.0 K is observed at 8.5 GPa. The Tc keeps increasing to about 4.0 K at 21.3 GPa, then shows a nearly constant pressure dependence up to the highest pressure 50.9 GPa. The X-ray diffraction measurements reveal a structure phase transition around 3.5 GPa. Our observation of superconductivity in pressurized topological Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 provides a new candidate for topological superconductor, as argued in a recent point contact study and a theoretical work.

Doping evolution of the superconducting gap structure in heavily hole-doped Ba1−x_{1-x}Kx_xFe2_2As2_2: heat transport study

We performed systematic thermal conductivity measurements on heavily hole-doped Ba1−x_{1-x}Kx_xFe2_2As2_2 single crystals with 0.747 ≤x≤\leq x \leq 0.974. At xx = 0.747, the κ0/Tκ_0/T is negligible, indicating nodeless superconducting gap. A small residual linear term κ0/Tκ_0/T (≈\approx 0.035 mW/K2^2 cm) appears at xx = 0.826, and it increases slowly up to xx = 0.974, followed by a drastic increase of more than 20 times to the pure KFe2_2As2_2 (xx = 1.0). This doping dependence of κ0/Tκ_0/T clearly shows that the nodal gap appears near x=0.8x = 0.8, likely associated with the change of Fermi surface topology. The small values of κ0/Tκ_0/T from xx = 0.826 to 0.974 support a "⋎\curlyvee"-shaped nodal ss-wave gap recently revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments at xx = 0.9. Furthermore, the drastic increase of κ0/Tκ_0/T from xx = 0.974 to 1.0 is inconsistent with a symmetry-imposed dd-wave gap in KFe2_2As2_2, and the possible nodal gap structure in KFe2_2As2_2 is discussed.

Drastic pressure effect on the extremely large magnetoresistance in WTe2: quantum oscillation study

The quantum oscillations of the magnetoresistance under ambient and high pressure have been studied for WTe2_2 single crystals, in which extremely large magnetoresistance was discovered recently. By analyzing the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, four Fermi surfaces are identified, and two of them are found to persist to high pressure. The sizes of these two pockets are comparable, but show increasing difference with pressure. At 0.3 K and in 14.5 T, the magnetoresistance decreases drastically from 1.25 ×\times 10510^5\% under ambient pressure to 7.47 ×\times 10310^3\% under 23.6 kbar, which is likely caused by the relative change of Fermi surfaces. These results support the scenario that the perfect balance between the electron and hole populations is the origin of the extremely large magnetoresistance in WTe2_2.

Nodal superconductivity and superconducting dome in new layered superconductor Ta4Pd3Te16

We measured the low-temperature thermal conductivity of a new layered superconductor with quasi-one-dimensional characteristics, the ternary telluride Ta4_4Pd3_3Te16_{16} with transition temperature Tc≈T_c \approx 4.3 K. The significant residual linear term of thermal conductivity in zero magnetic field and its rapid field dependence provide evidences for nodes in the superconducting gap. By measuring resistivity under pressures, we reveal a superconducting dome in the temperature-pressure phase diagram. The existence of gap nodes and superconducting dome suggests unconventional superconductivity in Ta4_4Pd3_3Te16_{16}, which may relate to a charge-density wave instability in this low-dimensional compound.

Superconductivity at 2.5 K in new transition-metal chalcogenide Ta2PdSe5

We report the synthesis and superconducting properties of a new transition-metal chalcogenide Ta2_2PdSe5_5. The measurements of resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat reveal that Ta2_2PdSe5_5 is a bulk superconductor with TcT_c ≃\simeq 2.5 K. The zero-field electronic specific heat in the superconducting state can be fitted with a two-gap BCS model. The upper critical field Hc2H_{c2} shows a linear temperature dependence, and the value of Hc2H_{c2}(0) is much higher than the estimated Pauli limiting field Hc2PH_{c2}^{P} and orbital limiting field Hc2orbH_{c2}^{orb}. All these results of specific heat and upper critical field suggest that Ta2_2PdSe5_5 is a multi-band superconductor.

Universal Heat Conduction in Ce1-xYbxCoIn5: Evidence for Robust Nodal d-wave Superconducting Gap

In heavy-fermion superconductor Ce1−x_{1-x}Ybx_xCoIn5_5 system, Yb doping was reported to cause a possible change from nodal dd-wave superconductivity to a fully gapped dd-wave molecular superfluid of composite pairs near x≈x \approx 0.07 (nominal value xnomx_{nom} = 0.2). Here we present systematic thermal conductivity measurements on Ce1−x_{1-x}Ybx_xCoIn5_5 (xx = 0.013, 0.084, and 0.163) single crystals. The observed finite residual linear term κ0/Tκ_0/T is insensitive to Yb doping, verifying the universal heat conduction of nodal dd-wave superconducting gap in Ce1−x_{1-x}Ybx_xCoIn5_5. Similar universal heat conduction is also observed in CeCo(In1−y_{1-y}Cdy_y)5_5 system. These results reveal robust nodal dd-wave gap in CeCoIn5_5 upon Yb or Cd doping.

Nodeless superconducting gaps in Ca10_{10}(Pt4−δ_{4-δ}As8_8)((Fe1−x_{1-x}Ptx_{x})2_2As2_2)5_5 probed by quasiparticle heat transport

The in-plane thermal conductivity of iron-based superconductor Ca10_{10}(Pt4−δ_{4-δ}As8_8)((Fe1−x_{1-x}Ptx_{x})2_2As2_2)5_5 single crystal (``10-4-8", TcT_c = 22 K) was measured down to 80 mK. In zero field, the residual linear term κ0/Tκ_0/T is negligible, suggesting nodeless superconducting gaps in this multiband compound. In magnetic fields, κ0/Tκ_0/T increases rapidly, which mimics those of multiband superconductor NbSe2_2 and LuNi2_2B2_2C with highly anisotropic gap. Such a field dependence of κ0/Tκ_0/T is an evidence for multiple superconducting gaps with quite different magnitudes or highly anisotropic gap. Comparing with the London penetration depth results of Ca10_{10}(Pt3_3As8_8)((Fe1−x_{1-x}Ptx_{x})2_2As2_2)5_5 (``10-3-8") compound, the 10-4-8 and 10-3-8 compounds may have similar superconducting gap structure.

Quantum transport evidence for a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal phase in Cd3As2

The material termed three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal has attracted great interests recently, since it is an electronic analogue to two-dimensional graphene. Starting from this novel phase, various topologically distinct phases may be obtained, such as topological insulator, Weyl semimetal, quantum spin Hall insulator, and topological superconductor. Soon after the theoretical predictions, the angle-resolve photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments gave evidences for 3D Dirac points in Na3Bi and Cd3As2. Here we report quantum transport properties of Cd3As2 single crystal in magnetic field. A sizable linear quantum magnetoresistance is observed at high temperature. With decreasing temperature, the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations appear in both longitudinal resistance Rxx and transverse Hall resistance Rxy. From the strong oscillatory component ΔRxx, the linear dependence of Landau index n on 1/B gives an n-axis intercept 0.58. Our quantum transport result clearly reveals a nontrivial π Berry's phase, thus provides strong bulk evidence for a 3D Dirac semimetal phase in Cd3As2. This may open new perspectives for its use in electronic devices.

Full superconducting gap in the doped topological crystalline insulator, Sn0.6_{0.6}In0.4_{0.4}Te

The thermal conductivity of the doped topological crystalline insulator, Sn0.6_{0.6}In0.4_{0.4}Te superconducting single crystal with Tc=T_c = 4.1 K, was measured down to 50 mK. It is found that the residual linear term κ0/Tκ_0/T is negligible in zero magnetic field. The κ0/Tκ_0/T shows a slow field dependence at low magnetic field. These results suggest that the superconducting gap is nodeless, unless there exist point nodes with directions perpendicular to the heat current. Due to its high-symmetry fcc crystal structure of Sn0.6_{0.6}In0.4_{0.4}Te, however, such point nodes can be excluded. Therefore we demonstrate that this topological superconductor candidate has a full superconducting gap in the bulk. It is likely the unconventional odd-parity A1uA_{1u} state which supports a surface Andreev bound state.

Nodal gap in iron-based superconductor CsFe2_2As2_2 probed by quasiparticle heat transport

The thermal conductivity of iron-based superconductor CsFe2_2As2_2 single crystal (Tc=T_c = 1.81 K) was measured down to 50 mK. A significant residual linear term κ0/Tκ_0/T = 1.27 mW K−2^{-2} cm−1^{-1} is observed in zero magnetic field, which is about 1/10 of the normal-state value in upper critical field Hc2H_{c2}. In low magnetic field, κ0/Tκ_0/T increases rapidly with field. The overall field dependence of κ0/Tκ_0/T for our CsFe2_2As2_2 (with residual resistivity ρ0ρ_0 = 1.80 μΩμΩ cm) lies between the dirty KFe2_2As2_2 (with ρ0ρ_0 = 3.32 μΩμΩ cm) and the clean KFe2_2As2_2 (with ρ0ρ_0 = 0.21 μΩμΩ cm). These results strongly suggest nodal superconducting gap in CsFe2_2As2_2, similar to its sister compound KFe2_2As2_2.
