Phase Transition in JT Gravity and $T\bar{T}$ Deformation

In this paper we study a black hole phase transition in a generalized JT gravity noticed in arXiv:2006.03494. We investigate the effect of the phase transition on the Euclidean geodesic and holographic two-point function in models with dilaton potential which interpolates two ordinary JT gravities with different cosmological constants. It is noted that there exists a closed geodesic with a new scale at low temperature phase when the potential has a locally negative region. This scale causes several peaks in the two-point function. We also comment on the phase transition of charged black holes. We then consider coupling generalized JT gravity to a matter and study its relation to a $T\bar{T}$ deformation of CFT at the classical level. We find the deformation parameter as a function of the dilaton and provide examples showing Janus-type couplings.

AdS Q-Soliton and Inhomogeneously mass-deformed ABJM Model

We study dual geometries to a deformed ABJM model with spatially dependent source functions at finite temperature. These source functions are proportional to the mass function $m(x)= m_0 \sin k x$ and its derivative $m'(x)$. As dual geometries, we find hairy black branes and AdS solitons corresponding to deconfinement phase and confining phase of the dual field theory, respectively. It turns out that the hairy AdS solitons have lower free energy than the black branes when the Hawking temperature is smaller than the confining scale. Therefore the dual system undergoes the first order phase transition. Even though our study is limited to the so-called Q-lattice ansatz, the solution space contains a set of solutions dual to a supersymmetric mass deformation. As a physical quantity to probe the confining phase, we investigate the holographic entanglement entropy and discuss its behavior in terms of modulation effect.

Thermodynamics of Inhomogeneously Mass-deformed ABJM Model and Pressure Anisotropy

In this paper we study the thermodynamics of black branes with a modulated complex scalar in the context of bulk and boundary theories. The modulation induces inhomogeneity to the dual field theory, anisotropic pressure, and brane charge to the bulk geometry. The first law of thermodynamics and the Smarr relation are obtained using the off-shell ADT and the reduced action formalisms. We discuss the prescription for the mass of black branes, which relies on relevant and marginal deformations in the dual field theory. One of the cases is the gravity dual to a ABJM model with a sinusoidal mass function depending on a spatial coordinate. This is the first study of the deformed ABJM model at finite temperature including bulk thermodynamics.

Holographic Entanglement Entropy of Anisotropic Minimal Surfaces in LLM Geometries

We calculate the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) of the $\mathbb{Z}_k$ orbifold of Lin-Lunin-Maldacena (LLM) geometries which are dual to the vacua of the mass-deformed ABJM theory with Chern-Simons level $k$. By solving the partial differential equations analytically, we obtain the HEEs for all LLM solutions with arbitrary M2 charge and $k$ up to $μ_0^2$-order where $μ_0$ is the mass parameter. The renormalized entanglement entropies are all monotonically decreasing near the UV fixed point in accordance with the $F$-theorem. Except the multiplication factor and to all orders in $μ_0$, they are independent of the overall scaling of Young diagrams which characterize LLM geometries. Therefore we can classify the HEEs of LLM geometries with $\mathbb{Z}_k$ orbifold in terms of the shape of Young diagrams modulo overall size. HEE of each family is a pure number independent of the 't Hooft coupling constant except the overall multiplication factor. We extend our analysis to obtain HEE analytically to $μ_0^4$-order for the symmetric droplet case.

Holography without counter terms

By considering the behavior of the reduced action under the scaling transformation, we present a unified derivation of the Smarr-like relation for asymptotically anti-de-Sitter planar black holes. This novel Smarr-like relation leads to useful information in the condensed matter systems through the AdS/CMT correspondence. By using our results, we provide an efficient way to obtain the holographically renormalized on-shell action without the information on the explicit forms of counter terms. We find the complete consistency of our results with those in various models discussed in the recent literatures and obtain new implications.

Ward Identity and Homes' Law in a Holographic Superconductor with Momentum Relaxation

We study three properties of a holographic superconductor related to conductivities, where momentum relaxation plays an important role. First, we find that there are constraints between electric, thermoelectric and thermal conductivities. The constraints are analytically derived by the Ward identities regarding diffeomorphism from field theory perspective. We confirm them by numerically computing all two-point functions from holographic perspective. Second, we investigate Homes' law and Uemura's law for various high-temperature and conventional superconductors. They are empirical and (material independent) universal relations between the superfluid density at zero temperature, the transition temperature, and the electric DC conductivity right above the transition temperature. In our model, it turns out that the Homes' law does not hold but the Uemura's law holds at small momentum relaxation related to coherent metal regime. Third, we explicitly show that the DC electric conductivity is finite for a neutral scalar instability while it is infinite for a complex scalar instability. This shows that the neutral scalar instability has nothing to do with superconductivity as expected.

A Simple Holographic Superconductor with Momentum Relaxation

We study a holographic superconductor model with momentum relaxation due to massless scalar fields linear to spatial coordinates($ψ_I = βδ_{Ii} x^i$), where $β$ is the strength of momentum relaxation. In addition to the original superconductor induced by the chemical potential($μ$) at $β=0$, there exists a new type of superconductor induced by $β$ even at $μ=0$. It may imply a new `pairing' mechanism of particles and antiparticles interacting with $β$, which may be interpreted as `impurity'. Two parameters $μ$ and $β$ compete in forming a superconducting phase. As a result, the critical temperature behaves differently depending on $β/μ$. It decreases when $β/μ$ is small and increases when $β/μ$ is large, which is a novel feature compared to other models. After analysing ground states and phase diagrams for various $β/μ$, we study optical electric($σ$), thermoelectric($α$), and thermal($\barκ$) conductivities. When the system undergoes a phase transition from a normal to a superconducting phase, $1/ω$ pole appears in the imaginary part of the electric conductivity, implying infinite DC conductivity. If $β/μ<1$, at small $ω$, a two-fluid model with an imaginary $1/ω$ pole and the Drude peak works for $σ$, $α$, and $\barκ$, but if $β/μ>1$ a non-Drude peak replaces the Drude peak. It is consistent with the coherent/incoherent metal transition in its metal phase. The Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham (FGT) sum rule is satisfied for all cases even when $μ=0$.

Character of Matter in Holography: Spin-Orbit Interaction

Gauge/Gravity duality as a theory of matter needs a systematic way to characterise a system. We suggest a `dimensional lifting' of the least irrelevant interaction to the bulk theory. As an example, we consider the spin-orbit interaction, which causes magneto-electric interaction term. We show that its lifting is an axionic coupling. We present an exact and analytic solution describing diamagnetic response. Experimental data on annealed graphite shows a remarkable similarity to our theoretical result. We also find an analytic formulas of DC transport coefficients, according to which, the anomalous Hall coefficient interpolates between the coherent metallic regime with $ρ_{xx}^{2}$ and incoherent metallic regime with $ρ_{xx}$ as we increase the disorder parameter $β$. The strength of the spin-orbit interaction also interpolates between the two scaling regimes.

Composite-particle hydrodynamics from dyonic black branes

We construct effective hydrodynamics for composite particles in (2+1) dimensions carrying a magnetic flux by employing a holographic approach. The hydrodynamics is obtained by perturbation of the dyonic black brane solutions in the derivative expansion. We introduce a consistent way to avoid mixing of different orders in the expansion. Thanks to this method, it is possible to take the strong external magnetic field limit in the dual field theory. To compare our result with those for a composite particle system, we study several cases that correspond to special solutions of Einstein's equation and Maxwell's equations.

Gauge Invariance and Holographic Renormalization

We study the gauge invariance of physical observables in holographic theories under the local diffeomorphism. We find that gauge invariance is intimately related to the holographic renormalisation: the local counter terms defined in the boundary cancel most of gauge dependences of the on-shell action as well as the divergences. There is a mismatch in the degrees of freedom between the bulk theory and the boundary one. We resolve this problem by noticing that there is a residual gauge symmetry(RGS). By extending the RGS such that it satisfies infalling boundary condition at the horizon, we can understand the problem in the context of general holographic embedding of a global symmetry at the boundary into the local gauge symmetry in the bulk.

Holographic Entanglement Entropy of Mass-deformed ABJM Theory

We investigate the effect of supersymmetry preserving mass deformation near the UV fixed point represented by the ${\cal N}=6$ ABJM theory. In the context of the gauge/gravity duality, we analytically calculate the leading small mass effect on the renormalized entanglement entropy (REE) for the most general Lin-Lunin-Maldacena (LLM) geometries in the cases of the strip and disk shaped entangling surfaces. Our result shows that the properties of the REE in (2+1)-dimensions are consistent with those of the $c$-function in (1+1)-dimensions. We also discuss the validity of our computations in terms of the curvature behavior of the LLM geometry in the large $N$ limit and the relation between the correlation length and the mass parameter for a special LLM solution.

Thermoelectric Conductivities at Finite Magnetic Field and the Nernst Effect

We study the thermoelectric conductivities of a strongly correlated system in the presence of a magnetic field by the gauge/gravity duality. We consider a class of Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theories with axion fields imposing momentum relaxation. General analytic formulas for the direct current(DC) conductivities and the Nernst signal are derived in terms of the black hole horizon data. For an explicit model study, we analyse in detail the dyonic black hole modified by momentum relaxation. In this model, for small momentum relaxation, the Nernst signal shows a bell-shaped dependence on the magnetic field, which is a feature of the normal phase of cuprates. We compute all alternating current(AC) electric, thermoelectric, and thermal conductivities by numerical analysis and confirm that their zero frequency limits precisely reproduce our analytic DC formulas, which is a non-trivial consistency check of our methods. We discuss the momentum relaxation effects on the conductivities including cyclotron resonance poles.

Charge-mass ratio bound and optimization in the Parikh-Wilczek tunneling model of Hawking radiation

In this letter, we study the mutual information hidden in the Parikh-Wilczek tunneling model of Hawking radiation for Reissner-Norstrom black holes. We argue that the condition of nonnegativity of mutual information suggests bound(s) for charge-mass ratio of emitted particles. We further view the radiation as an optimization process and discuss its effect on time evolution of a charged black hole.

Coherent/incoherent metal transition in a holographic model

We study AC electric($σ$), thermoelectric($α$), and thermal($\barκ$) conductivities in a holographic model, which is based on 3+1 dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-scalar action. There is momentum relaxation due to massless scalar fields linear to spatial coordinate. The model has three field theory parameters: temperature($T$), chemical potential($μ$), and effective impurity($β$). At low frequencies, if $β< μ$, all three AC conductivities($σ, α, \barκ$) exhibit a Drude peak modified by pair creation contribution(coherent metal). The parameters of this modified Drude peak are obtained analytically. In particular, if $β\ll μ$ the relaxation time of electric conductivity approaches to $2\sqrt{3} μ/β^2$ and the modified Drude peak becomes a standard Drude peak. If $β> μ$ the shape of peak deviates from the Drude form(incoherent metal). At intermediate frequencies($T<ω<μ$), we have analysed numerical data of three conductivities($σ, α, \barκ$) for a wide variety of parameters, searching for scaling laws, which are expected from either experimental results on cuprates superconductors or some holographic models. In the model we study, we find no clear signs of scaling behaviour.

Renormalized Entanglement Entropy Flow in Mass-deformed ABJM Theory

We investigate a mass deformation effect on the renormalized entanglement entropy (REE) near the UV fixed point in (2+1)-dimensional field theory. In the context of the gauge/gravity duality, we use the Lin-Lunin-Maldacena (LLM) geometries corresponding to the vacua of the mass-deformed ABJM theory. We analytically compute the small mass effect for various droplet configurations and show in holographic point of view that the REE is monotonically decreasing, positive, and stationary at the UV fixed point. These properties of the REE in (2+1)-dimensions are consistent with the Zamolodchikov $c$-function proposed in (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theory.

Equations of state and compact stars in gauge/gravity duality

We propose a new doorway to study the interplay between equations of state of dense matter and compact stars in gauge/gravity correspondence. For this we construct a bulk geometry near the boundary of five-dimensional spacetime. By solving a constraint equation derived from the bulk equation of motion together with the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation, we determine the equations of state for compact stars. The input parameters in this study are the energy density and pressure at the center of the compact objects. We also study how the equation of state depends on the parameters.

A criterion for the nature of the superconducting transition in strongly interacting field theories : Holographic approach

It is beyond the present techniques based on perturbation theory to reveal the nature of phase transitions in strongly interacting field theories. Recently, the holographic approach has provided us with an effective dual description, mapping strongly coupled conformal field theories to classical gravity theories. Resorting to the holographic superconductor model, we propose a general criterion for the nature of the superconducting phase transition based on effective interactions between vortices. We find "tricritical" points in terms of the chemical potential for U(1) charges and an effective Ginzburg-Landau parameter, where vortices do not interact to separate the second order (repulsive) from the first order (attractive) transitions. We interpret the first order transition as the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, arguing that it is relevant to superconducting instabilities around quantum criticality.

Symmetry Breaking Phase Transitions in ABJM Theory with a Finite U(1) Chemical Potential

We consider the U(1) charged sector of ABJM theory at finite temperature, which corresponds to the Reissner-Nordstrom AdS black hole in the dual type IIA supergravity description. Including back-reaction to the bulk geometry, we show that phase transitions occur to a broken phase where SU(4) R-symmetry of the field theory is broken spontaneously by the condensation of dimension one or two operators. We show both numerically and analytically that the relevant critical exponents for the dimension one operator agree precisely with those of mean field theory in the strongly coupled regime of the large N planar limit.

Self-bound dense objects in holographic QCD

We study a self-bound dense object in the hard wall model. We consider a spherically symmetric dense object which is characterized by its radial density distribution and non-uniform but spherically symmetric chiral condensate. For this we analytically solve the partial differential equations in the hard wall model and read off the radial coordinate dependence of the density and chiral condensate according to the AdS/CFT correspondence. We then attempt to describe nucleon density profiles of a few nuclei within our framework and observe that the confinement scale changes from a free nucleon to a nucleus. We briefly discuss how to include the effect of higher dimensional operator into our study. We finally comment on possible extensions of our work.
