Based on an interesting identity of Batır we derive new identities for double sums involving famous number sequences. We also prove some double sum identities for binomial transform pairs.
We present several types of ordinary generating functions involving central binomial coefficients, harmonic numbers, and odd harmonic numbers. Our results complement those of Boyadzhiev from 2012 and Chen from 2016. Based on these generating functions we evaluate several infinite series in closed form. In addition, we offer some combinatorial sum identities involving Catalan numbers, harmonic numbers and odd harmonic numbers. Finally, we analyze a special log-integral with Fibonacci numbers and odd harmonic numbers.
We continue our study on relationships between Fibonacci (Lucas) numbers and Bernoulli numbers and polynomials. The derivations of our results are based on functional equations for the respective generating functions, which in our case are combinations of hyperbolic functions. Special cases and some corollaries will highlight interesting aspects of our findings.
We study certain series with Catalan numbers and reciprocal Catalan numbers, respectively, and provide seemingly new closed form evaluations of these series with Fibonacci (Lucas) entries. In addition, we state some combinatorial sums that can be inferred from the series.
We evaluate the nested sum $\sum_{a_{n - 1} = c}^{a_n } {\sum_{a_{n - 2} = c}^{a_{n - 1} } { \cdots \sum_{a_0 = c}^{a_1 } {x^{a_0 } } } }$ where $a_n$ and $c$ are any integers and $x$ is a real or complex variable. Consequently, we evaluate multiple sums involving the terms of a general second order sequence, the Horadam sequence $(W_j(a,b;p,q))$, defined for all non-negative integers $j$ by the recurrence relation $W_0 = a,\,W_1 = b;\,W_j = pW_{j - 1} - qW_{j - 2}\, (j \ge 2)$; where $a$, $b$, $p$ and $q$ are arbitrary complex numbers, with $p\ne 0$, $q\ne 0$.
We study a certain family of infinite series with reciprocal Catalan numbers. We first evaluate two special candidates of the family in closed form, where we also present some Catalan-Fibonacci relations. Then we focus on the general properties of the family and prove explicit formulas, including two types of integral representations.
We develop a recursive scheme, as well as polynomial forms (polynomials in $n$ of degree $m$), for the evaluation of Ledin and Brousseau's Fibonacci sums of the form $S(m,n,r)=\sum_{k=1}^nk^mF_{k + r}$, $T(m,n,r)=\sum_{k=1}^nk^mL_{k + r}$ for non-negative integers $m$ and $n$ and arbitrary integer $r$; $F_j$ and $L_j$ being the $j^{th}$ Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. We also extend the study to a general second order sequence by establishing a recursive procedure to determine $W(m,n,r;a,b,p,q)=\sum_{k=1}^nk^mw_{k+r}$ where $(w_j(a,b;p,q))$ is the Horadam sequence defined by $w_0 = a,\,w_1 = b;\,w_j = pw_{j - 1} - qw_{j - 2}\, (j \ge 2);$ where $a$, $b$, $p$ and $q$ are arbitrary complex numbers, with $p\ne 0$ and $q\ne 0$. An explicit polynomial form for $W(m,n,r;a,b,1,q)$ and more generally for the sum $\mathcal W(m,n,h,r;a,b,p,q) = \sum_{k = 1}^n {V_h^{- k}k^m w_{hk + r}}$, where $(V_j(p,q))=(w_j(2,p;p,q))$, is established. Finally a polynomial form is established for a Ledin-Brousseau sum involving Horadam numbers with subscripts in arithmetic progression.
We study the Extended Bose-Hubbard Model with a three-body onsite interaction. Using an exact diagonalization method and a variational Matrix Product States algorithm, \emph{Alps mps-optim}, we compute and analyse the energy charge gap and finite system correlation functions to obtain the phase boundaries and determine the phases and phase transitions of the model. For \mbox{$\frac{V}{U} = 0.6$} and \mbox{$\frac{W}{U} = 0$}, we observed the emergence of the Haldane insulator (HI) phase at the tip of the \mbox{$ρ= 1$} charge density wave (CDW) lobe and for \mbox{$\frac{V}{U} = 0.6$} and \mbox{$\frac{W}{U} = 1$}, we observed the emergence of the supersolid (SS) phase at the tip of the \mbox{$ρ= 1/2$} charge density wave (CDW) lobe. We also noticed that the effect of the inclusion of both the three-body onsite and nearest neighbor interactions on the phase diagram of the model for filling factor \mbox{$ρ= 2$} is to stabilize the Mott insulator (MI) phase such that the system remains in the MI phase for all values of $\frac{V}{U}$.
BBP-type formulas are usually discovered experimentally, one at a time and in specific bases, through computer searches. In this paper, however, we derive directly, without doing any searches, explicit digit extraction BBP-type formulas in general binary bases $b=2^{12p}$, for $p$ positive odd integers. As particular examples, new binary formulas are presented for $π\sqrt 3$, $π\sqrt 3\log 2$, $\sqrt 3\;{\rm Cl}_2(π/3)$ and a couple of other polylogarithm constants. A variant of the formula for $π\sqrt 3\log 2$ derived in this paper has been known for over ten years but was hitherto unproved. Binary BBP-type formulas for the logarithms of an infinite set of primes and binary BBP-type representations for the arctangents of an infinite set of rational numbers are also presented. Finally, new binary BBP-type zero relations are established.
Hitherto only a base 5 BBP-type formula is known for $\sqrt 5\logϕ$, where \mbox{$ϕ=(\sqrt 5+1)/2$}, the golden ratio, ( i.e. Formula 83 of the April 2013 edition of Bailey's Compendium of \mbox{BBP-type} formulas). In this paper we derive a new binary BBP-type formula for this constant. The formula is obtained as a particular case of a BBP-type formula for a family of logarithms.
BBP-type formulas are usually discovered experimentally, through computer searches. In this paper, however, starting with two simple generators, and hence without doing any computer searches, we derive a wide range of BBP-type formulas in general bases. Many previously discovered BBP-type formulas turn out to be particular cases of the formulas derived here.
Using a clear and straightforward approach, we discover and prove new binary digit extraction BBP-type formulas for polylogarithm constants. Some known results are also rediscovered in a more direct and elegant manner. Numerous experimentally discovered and previously unproved binary BBP-type formulas are also proved.
Using a clear and straightforward approach, we prove new ternary (base 3) digit extraction BBP-type formulas for polylogarithm constants. Some known results are also rediscovered in a more direct and elegant manner. A previously unproved degree~4 ternary formula is also proved. Finally, a couple of ternary zero relations are established, which prove two known but hitherto unproved formulas.
In the existing literature various numerical techniques have been developed to quantize the confined harmonic oscillator in higher dimensions. In obtaining the energy eigenvalues, such methods often involve indirect approaches such as searching for the roots of hypergeometric functions or numerically solving a differential equation. In this paper, however, we derive an explicit matrix representation for the Hamiltonian of a confined quantum harmonic oscillator in higher dimensions, thus facilitating direct diagonalization.
Using a straightforward elementary approach, we derive numerous infinite arctangent summation formulas involving Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. While most of the results obtained are new, a couple of celebrated results appear as particular cases of the more general formulas derived here.
The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate and illustrate, once again, the potency of the variational technique as an approximation procedure for the quantization of quantum mechanical systems. By choosing particle-in-a-box wavefunctions as trial wavefunctions, with the size of the box as the variation parameter, approximate eigenenergies and the corresponding eigenfunctions are obtained for the one dimensional free harmonic oscillator.
Direct links between generalized harmonic numbers, linear Euler sums and Tornheim double series are established in a more perspicuous manner than is found in existing literature. We show that every linear Euler sum can be decomposed into a linear combination of Tornheim double series of the same weight. New closed form evaluations of various Euler sums are presented. Finally certain combinations of linear Euler sums that are reducible to Riemann zeta values are discovered.
We derive interesting arctangent identities involving the golden ratio, Fibonacci numbers and Lucas numbers. Binary BBP-type formulas for the arctangents of certain odd powers of the golden ratio are also derived, for the first time in the literature. Finally we derive golden-ratio-base BBP-type formulas for some mathematical constants, including $π$, $\log 2$, $\logϕ$ and $\sqrt 2\,\arctan\sqrt 2$. The $ϕ-$nary BBP-type formulas derived here are considerably simpler than similar results contained in earlier literature.
We give a closed formula for the $n^{th}$ derivative of $\arctan x$. A new expansion for $\arctan x$ is also obtained and rapidly convergent series for $π$ and $π\sqrt 3$ are derived.
We derive an explicit matrix representation for the Hamiltonian of the Ising model in mutually orthogonal external magnetic fields, using as basis the eigenstates of a system of non-interacting \mbox{spin~$1/2$} particles in external magnetic fields. We subsequently apply our results to obtain an analytical expression for the ground state energy per spin, to the fourth order in the exchange integral, for the Ising model in perpendicular external fields.
We state and prove a general summation identity. The identity is then applied to derive various summation formulas involving the generalized harmonic numbers and related quantities. Interesting results, mostly new, are obtained for both finite and infinite sums. The high points of this paper are perhaps the discovery of several previously unknown infinite summation results involving {\em non-linear} generalized harmonic number terms and the derivation of interesting alternating summation formulas involving these numbers
In this paper we give a Casimir Invariant for the Symmetric group $S_n$. Furthermore we obtain and present, for the first time in the literature, explicit formulas for the matrices of the standard representation in terms of the matrices of the permutation representation.
