ErfAct and Pserf: Non-monotonic Smooth Trainable Activation Functions

An activation function is a crucial component of a neural network that introduces non-linearity in the network. The state-of-the-art performance of a neural network depends also on the perfect choice of an activation function. We propose two novel non-monotonic smooth trainable activation functions, called ErfAct and Pserf. Experiments suggest that the proposed functions improve the network performance significantly compared to the widely used activations like ReLU, Swish, and Mish. Replacing ReLU by ErfAct and Pserf, we have 5.68% and 5.42% improvement for top-1 accuracy on Shufflenet V2 (2.0x) network in CIFAR100 dataset, 2.11% and 1.96% improvement for top-1 accuracy on Shufflenet V2 (2.0x) network in CIFAR10 dataset, 1.0%, and 1.0% improvement on mean average precision (mAP) on SSD300 model in Pascal VOC dataset.

SMU: smooth activation function for deep networks using smoothing maximum technique

Deep learning researchers have a keen interest in proposing two new novel activation functions which can boost network performance. A good choice of activation function can have significant consequences in improving network performance. A handcrafted activation is the most common choice in neural network models. ReLU is the most common choice in the deep learning community due to its simplicity though ReLU has some serious drawbacks. In this paper, we have proposed a new novel activation function based on approximation of known activation functions like Leaky ReLU, and we call this function Smooth Maximum Unit (SMU). Replacing ReLU by SMU, we have got 6.22% improvement in the CIFAR100 dataset with the ShuffleNet V2 model.

New Polymorphs of Two-Dimensional Indium Selenide with Enhanced Electronic Properties

The two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor indium selenide (InSe) has attracted significant interest due its unique electronic band structure, high electron mobility and wide tunability of its band gap energy achieved by varying the layer thickness. All these features make 2D InSe a potential candidate for advanced electronic and optoelectronic applications. Here, we report on the discovery of new polymorphs of InSe with enhanced electronic properties. Using a global structure search that combines artificial swarm intelligence with first-principles energetic calculations, we identify polymorphs that consist of a centrosymmetric monolayer belonging to the point group D$_{3d}$, distinct from the well-known polymorphs based on the D$_{3h}$ monolayers that lack inversion symmetry. The new polymorphs are thermodynamically and kinetically stable, and exhibit a wider optical spectral response and larger electron mobilities compared to the known polymorphs. We discuss opportunities to synthesize these newly discovered polymorphs and viable routes to identify them by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and second harmonic generation experiments.

TanhSoft -- a family of activation functions combining Tanh and Softplus

Deep learning at its core, contains functions that are composition of a linear transformation with a non-linear function known as activation function. In past few years, there is an increasing interest in construction of novel activation functions resulting in better learning. In this work, we propose a family of novel activation functions, namely TanhSoft, with four undetermined hyper-parameters of the form tanh(αx+βe^{γx})ln(δ+e^x) and tune these hyper-parameters to obtain activation functions which are shown to outperform several well known activation functions. For instance, replacing ReLU with xtanh(0.6e^x)improves top-1 classification accuracy on CIFAR-10 by 0.46% for DenseNet-169 and 0.7% for Inception-v3 while with tanh(0.87x)ln(1 +e^x) top-1 classification accuracy on CIFAR-100 improves by 1.24% for DenseNet-169 and 2.57% for SimpleNet model.

Energy Transport and Scintillation of Cerium Doped Elpasolite Cs2LiYCl6: Hybrid Density Functional Calculations

Elpasolites are a large family of halides which have recently attracted considerable interest for their potential applications in room-temperature radiation detection. Cs2LiYCl6 is one of the most widely studied elpasolite scintillators. In this paper, we will show hybrid density functional calculations on electronic structure, energetics of small electron and hole polarons and self-trapped excitons, and the excitation of luminescence centers (Ce impurities) in Cs2LiYCl6. The results provide important understanding in energy transport and scintillation mechanisms in Cs2LiYCl6 and rare-earth elpasolites in general.

What Causes High Resistivity in CdTe

CdTe can be made semi-insulating by shallow donor doping. This is routinely done to obtain high resistivity in CdTe-based radiation detectors. However, it is widely believed that the high resistivity in CdTe is due to the Fermi level pinning by native deep donors. The model based on shallow donor compensation of native acceptors was dismissed based on the assumption that it is practically impossible to control the shallow donor doping level so precisely that the free carrier density can be brought below the desired value suitable for radiation detection applications. In this paper, we present our calculations on carrier statistics and energetics of shallow donors and native defects in CdTe. Our results show that the shallow donor can be used to reliably obtain high resistivity in CdTe. Since radiation detection applications require both high resistivity and good carrier transport, one should generally use shallow donors and shallow acceptors for carrier compensation and avoid deep centers that are effective carrier traps.
