Losing Forward Momentum Holographically

We present a numerical scheme for solving Einstein's Equations in the presence of a negative cosmological constant and an event horizon with planar topology. Our scheme allows for the introduction of a particular metric source at the conformal boundary. Such a spacetime has a dual holographic description in terms of a strongly interacting quantum field theory at nonzero temperature. By introducing a sinusoidal static metric source that breaks translation invariance, we study momentum relaxation in the field theory. In the long wavelength limit, our results are consistent with the fluid-gravity correspondence and relativistic hydrodynamics. In the small amplitude limit, our results are consistent with the memory function prediction for the momentum relaxation rate. Our numerical scheme allows us to study momentum relaxation outside these two limits as well.

Time-Dependent Warping and Non-Singular Bouncing Cosmologies

In this note, we construct a family of non-singular time-dependent solutions of a six-dimensional gravitational theory that are warped products of a four dimensional bouncing cosmological solution and a two dimensional internal manifold. The warp factor is time-dependent and breaks translation invariance along one of the internal directions. When the warp factor is periodic in time, the non-compact part of the geometry bounces periodically. The six dimensional geometry is supported by matter that does not violate the null energy condition. We show that this 6D geometry does not admit a closed trapped surface and hence the Hawking-Penrose singularity theorems do not apply to these solutions. We also present examples of singular solutions where the topology of the internal manifold changes dynamically.

Gravity duals of cyclic RG flows, with strings attached

In this note, we propose gravity duals for 3+1 dimensional Lorentz invariant theories exhibiting discrete scale invariance. We construct non-singular solutions of a six dimensional gravitational theory that are warped products of $AdS_{5}$ and a circle. The presence of non-trivial warp factor explicitly breaks the symmetries of $AdS_{5}$ to discrete scale invariance and also breaks translation symmetry along the circle. The matter content of the 6D gravitational theory does not violate the null energy condition. In addition, we show that the linearized fluctuations around these 6D backgrounds are stable i.e., the fluctuations do not violate the Breitenlohner-Freedman stability criterion. The dual theories display periodic RG trajectories, but these RG flows do not violate the $a$-theorem. In particular, the dual field theory is not a soft deformation (deformation by marginal or relevant operators) of a 3+1 dimensional conformal field theory and hence the $a$-theorem and similar monotonicity constraints on RG flows do not apply to these examples. The holographic $c$-theorem also does not apply to these solutions. Finally, we present solutions of type II supergravity that exhibit discrete scale invariance to demonstrate that such solutions can be embedded in string theory.

String theory duals of Lifshitz-Chern-Simons gauge theories

We propose candidate gravity duals for a class of non-Abelian z=2 Lifshitz Chern-Simons (LCS) gauge theories studied by Mulligan, Kachru and Nayak. These are nonrelativistic gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions in which parity and time-reversal symmetries are explicitly broken by the presence of a Chern-Simons term. We show that these field theories can be realized as deformations of DLCQ N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Using the holographic dictionary, we identify the bulk fields that are dual to these deformations. The geometries describing the groundstates of the non-Abelian LCS gauge theories realized here exhibit a mass gap.

Lifshitz spacetimes from AdS null and cosmological solutions

We describe solutions of 10-dimensional supergravity comprising null deformations of $AdS_5\times S^5$ with a scalar field, which have $z=2$ Lifshitz symmetries. The bulk Lifshitz geometry in 3+1-dimensions arises by dimensional reduction of these solutions. The dual field theory in this case is a deformation of the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We discuss the holographic 2-point function of operators dual to bulk scalars. We further describe time-dependent (cosmological) solutions which have anisotropic Lifshitz scaling symmetries. We also discuss deformations of $AdS\times X$ in 11-dimensional supergravity, which are somewhat similar to the solutions above. In some cases here, we expect the field theory duals to be deformations of the Chern-Simons theories on M2-branes stacked at singularities.

The particle number in Galilean holography

Recently, gravity duals for certain Galilean-invariant conformal field theories have been constructed. In this paper, we point out that the spectrum of the particle number operator in the examples found so far is not a necessary consequence of the existence of a gravity dual. We record some progress towards more realistic spectra. In particular, we construct bulk systems with asymptotic Schrodinger symmetry and only one extra dimension. In examples, we find solutions which describe these Schrodinger-symmetric systems at finite density. A lift to M-theory is used to resolve a curvature singularity. As a happy byproduct of this analysis, we realize a state which could be called a holographic Mott insulator.

An analytic Lifshitz black hole

A Lifshitz point is described by a quantum field theory with anisotropic scale invariance (but not Galilean invariance). In arXiv:0808.1725, gravity duals were conjectured for such theories. We construct analytically a black hole which asymptotes to a vacuum Lifshitz solution; this black hole solves the equations of motion of some simple (but somewhat strange) extensions of the models of arXiv:0808.1725. We study its thermodynamics and scalar response functions. The scalar wave equation turns out to be exactly solvable. Interestingly, the Green's functions do not exhibit the ultralocal behavior seen previously in the free Lifshitz scalar theory.

Hot Spacetimes for Cold Atoms

Building on our earlier work and that of Son, we construct string theory duals of non-relativistic critical phenomena at finite temperature and density. Concretely, we find black hole solutions of type IIB supergravity whose asymptotic geometries realize the Schroedinger group as isometries. We then identify the non-relativistic conformal field theories to which they are dual. We analyze the thermodynamics of these black holes, which turn out to describe the system at finite temperature and finite density. The strong-coupling result for the shear viscosity of the dual non-relativistic field theory saturates the KSS bound.
