Cosmologies, singularities and quantum extremal surfaces

Following arXiv:2012.07351 [hep-th], we study quantum extremal surfaces in various families of cosmologies with Big-Crunch singularities, by extremizing the generalized entropy in 2-dimensional backgrounds which can be thought of as arising from dimensional reduction. Focussing first on the isotropic $AdS$ Kasner case, introducing a spatial regulator enables relating the locations in time of the quantum extremal surface and the observer. This shows that the quantum extremal surface lags behind the observer location. A potential island-like region, upon analysing more closely near the island boundary, turns out to be inconsistent. Similar results arise for other holographic cosmologies. We then study certain families of null Kasner singularities where we find that the quantum extremal surface can reach the near singularity region although the on-shell generalized entropy is generically singular. We also study other cosmologies including de Sitter (Poincare slicing) and FRW cosmologies under certain conditions.

Cosmological singularities and 2-dimensional dilaton gravity

We study Big-Bang or -Crunch cosmological singularities in 2-dimensional dilaton-gravity-scalar theories, in general obtained by dimensional reduction of higher dimensional theories. The dilaton potential encodes information about the asymptotic data defining the theories, and encompasses various families such as flat space, $AdS$, conformally $AdS$ as arising from nonconformal branes, and more general nonrelativistic theories. We find a kind of universal near singularity behaviour independent of the dilaton potential, giving universal interrelations between the exponents defining the time behaviour near the cosmological singularity. More detailed analysis using a scaling ansatz enables finding various classes of cosmological backgrounds, recovering known examples such as the $AdS$ Kasner singularity as well finding as new ones. We give some comments on the dual field theory from this point of view.

On de Sitter future-past extremal surfaces and the "entanglement wedge"

We develop further the codim-2 future-past extremal surfaces stretching between the future and past boundaries in de Sitter space, discussed in previous work. We first make more elaborate the construction of such surfaces anchored at more general subregions of the future boundary, and stretching to equivalent subregions at the past boundary. These top-bottom symmetric future-past extremal surfaces cannot penetrate beyond a certain limiting surface in the Northern/Southern diamond regions: the boundary subregions become the whole boundary for this limiting surface. For multiple disjoint subregions, this construction leads to mutual information vanishing and strong subadditivity being saturated. We then discuss an effective codim-1 envelope surface arising from these codim-2 surfaces. This leads to analogs of the entanglement wedge and subregion duality for these future-past extremal surfaces in de Sitter space.

de Sitter entropy as entanglement

We describe connected timelike codim-2 extremal surfaces stretching between the future and the past boundaries in the static patch coordinatization of de Sitter space. These are analogous to rotated versions of certain surfaces in the $AdS$ black hole. The existence of these surfaces via the $dS/CFT$ framework suggests the speculation that $dS_4$ is dual to two copies of ghost-like CFTs in a thermofield-double-type entangled state. In studies of entanglement in ghost systems and "ghost-spin" chains, we show that similar entangled states in two copies of ghost-spin ensembles always have positive norm and positive entanglement.

Hyperscaling violation and the shear diffusion constant

We consider holographic theories in bulk $(d+1)$-dimensions with Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating exponents $z,θ$ at finite temperature. By studying shear gravitational modes in the near-horizon region given certain self-consistent approximations, we obtain the corresponding shear diffusion constant on an appropriately defined stretched horizon, adapting the analysis of Kovtun, Son and Starinets. For generic exponents with $d-z-θ>-1$, we find that the diffusion constant has power law scaling with the temperature, motivating us to guess a universal relation for the viscosity bound. When the exponents satisfy $d-z-θ=-1$, we find logarithmic behaviour. This relation is equivalent to $z=2+d_{eff}$ where $d_{eff}=d_i-θ$ is the effective boundary spatial dimension (and $d_i=d-1$ the actual spatial dimension). It is satisfied by the exponents in hyperscaling violating theories arising from null reductions of highly boosted black branes, and we comment on the corresponding analysis in that context.

On $dS_4$ extremal surfaces and entanglement entropy in some ghost CFTs

In arXiv:1501.03019 [hep-th], the areas of certain complex extremal surfaces in de Sitter space were found to have resemblance with entanglement entropy in appropriate dual Euclidean non-unitary CFTs, with the area being real and negative in $dS_4$. In this paper, we study some toy models of 2-dim ghost conformal field theories with negative central charge with a view to exploring this further from the CFT point of view. In particular we consider $bc$-ghost systems with central charge $c=-2$ and study the replica formulation for entanglement entropy for a single interval, and associated issues arising in this case, notably pertaining to (i) the $SL(2)$ vacuum coinciding with the ghost ground state, and (ii) the background charge inherent in these systems which leads to particular forms for the norms of states (involving zero modes). This eventually gives rise to negative entanglement entropy. We also discuss a (logarithmic) CFT of anti-commuting scalars, with similarities in some features. Finally we discuss a simple toy model of two "ghost-spins" which mimics some of these features.

de Sitter extremal surfaces

We study extremal surfaces in de Sitter space in the Poincare slicing in the upper patch, anchored on spatial subregions at the future boundary ${\cal I}^+$, restricted to constant boundary Euclidean time slices (focussing on strip subregions). We find real extremal surfaces of minimal area as the boundaries of past lightcone wedges of the subregions in question: these are null surfaces with vanishing area. We also find complex extremal surfaces as complex extrema of the area functional, and the area is not always real-valued. In $dS_4$ the area is real. The area has structural resemblance with entanglement entropy in a dual $CFT$. There are parallels with analytic continuation from the Ryu-Takayanagi expressions for holographic entanglement entropy in $AdS$. We also discuss extremal surfaces in the $dS$ black brane and the de Sitter "bluewall" studied previously. The $dS_4$ black brane complex surfaces exhibit a real finite cutoff-independent extensive piece. In the bluewall geometry, there are real surfaces that go from one asymptotic universe to the other through the Cauchy horizons.

de Sitter space and extremal surfaces for spheres

Following arXiv:1501.03019 [hep-th], we study de Sitter space and spherical subregions on a constant boundary Euclidean time slice of the future boundary in the Poincare slicing. We show that as in that case, complex extremal surfaces exist here as well: for even boundary dimensions, we isolate the universal coefficient of the logarithmically divergent term in the area of these surfaces. There are parallels with analytic continuation of the Ryu-Takayanagi expressions for holographic entanglement entropy in $AdS/CFT$. We then study the free energy of the dual Euclidean CFT on a sphere holographically using the $dS/CFT$ dictionary with a dual de Sitter space in global coordinates, and a classical approximation for the wavefunction of the universe. For even dimensions, we again isolate the coefficient of the logarithmically divergent term which is expected to be related to the conformal anomaly. We find agreement including numerical factors between these coefficients.

On a lightlike limit of entanglement

We study certain classes of $g_{++}$ deformations of theories arising in gauge/string realizations of nonrelativistic holography, some of which pertain to $z=2$ Lifshitz theories while others (pertaining to hyperscaling violation) comprise certain classes of excited states. Building on previous work, we consider holographic entanglement entropy for spacelike strip subsystems in a highly boosted (lightlike) limit, where the strip is stretched along the null $x^+$-plane. The leading divergence in entanglement in this null limit for these excited states is milder than the usual area law for spacelike subsystems in ground states. For ground states, the entanglement vanishes, perhaps consistent with ultralocality. We discuss this briefly from a field theory perspective. We also present some simple free lightfront field theory examples in excited states where correlators are nonvanishing.

AdS plane waves, entanglement and mutual information

$AdS$ plane wave backgrounds are dual to CFT excited states with energy momentum density $T_{++}=Q$. Building on previous work on entanglement entropy in these and nonconformal brane plane wave backgrounds, we first describe a phenomenological scaling picture for entanglement in terms of "entangling partons". We then study aspects of holographic mutual information in these backgrounds for two strip shaped subsystems, aligned parallel or orthogonal to the flux. We focus on the wide ($Ql^d\gg 1$) and narrow ($Ql^d\ll 1$) strip regimes. In the wide strip regime, mutual information exhibits growth with the individual strip sizes and a disentangling transition as the separation between the strips increases, whose behaviour is distinct from the ground and thermal states. In the narrow strip case, our calculations have parallels with "entanglement thermodynamics" for these $AdS$ plane wave deformations. We also discuss some numerical analysis.

dS/CFT at uniform energy density and a de Sitter "bluewall"

We describe a class of spacetimes that are asymptotically de Sitter in the Poincare slicing. Assuming that a dS/CFT correspondence exists, we argue that these are gravity duals to a CFT on a circle leading to uniform energy-momentum density, and are equivalent to an analytic continuation of the Euclidean AdS black brane. These are solutions with a complex parameter which then gives a real energy-momentum density. We also discuss a related solution with the parameter continued to a real number, which we refer to as a de Sitter "bluewall". This spacetime has two asymptotic de Sitter universes and Cauchy horizons cloaking timelike singularities. We argue that the Cauchy horizons give rise to a blue-shift instability.

AdS plane waves and entanglement entropy

AdS plane waves describe simple backgrounds which are dual to anisotropically excited systems with energy fluxes. Upon dimensional reduction, they reduce to hyperscaling violating spacetimes: in particular, the $AdS_5$ plane wave is known to exhibit logarithmic behavior of the entanglement entropy. In this paper, we carry out an extensive study of the holographic entanglement entropy for strip-shaped subsystems in AdS plane wave backgrounds. We find that the results depend crucially on whether the strip is parallel or orthogonal to the energy current. In the latter case, we show that there is a phenomenon analogous to a phase transition.

Non-conformal brane plane waves and entanglement entropy

Following [arXiv:1202.5935 [hep-th]] and [arXiv:1212.4328 [hep-th]], we study non-conformal brane plane wave backgrounds dual to strongly coupled gauge theories with constant energy flux and holographic entanglement entropy for strip subsystems in them. We find that for the strip direction along the direction of the energy flux, the finite cutoff-independent part of entanglement entropy can be estimated in terms of a dimensionless combination of the energy density and the strip dimensions, alongwith an effective scale-dependent number of degrees of freedom. For the strip orthogonal to the flux direction, there are indications of phase transitions. We also briefly discuss NS5-brane backgrounds corresponding to plane wave states in little string theories.

AdS null deformations with inhomogeneities

We study $AdS\times X$ null deformations arising as near horizon limits of D3-brane analogs of inhomogenous plane waves. Restricting to normalizable deformations for the $AdS_5$ case, these generically correspond in the dual field theory to SYM states with lightcone momentum density $T_{++}$ varying spatially, the homogenous case studied in arXiv:1202.5935 [hep-th] corresponding to uniform $T_{++}$. All of these preserve some supersymmetry. Generically these inhomogenous solutions exhibit analogs of horizons in the interior where a timelike Killing vector becomes null. From the point of view of $x^+$-dimensional reduction, the circle pinches off on these horizon loci in the interior. We discuss similar inhomogenous solutions with asymptotically Lifshitz boundary conditions, as well as aspects of Lifshitz singularities in string constructions involving $AdS$ null deformations. We also briefly discuss holographic entanglement entropy for some of these.

On Lifshitz scaling and hyperscaling violation in string theory

We explore string/M-theory constructions of holographic theories with Lifshitz scaling exponent $z$ and hyperscaling violation exponent $θ$, finding a range of $z,θ$-values. Some of these arise as effective metrics from dimensional reduction of certain kinds of null deformations of $AdS$ spacetimes appearing in the near horizon geometries of extremal D3-, M2- and M5-brane theories. The $AdS_5$ solution in particular gives rise to $θ=1$ in $d=2$ (boundary) space dimensions. Other solutions arise as the IIA D2- and D4-brane solutions with appropriate null deformations, and we discuss the phase structure of these systems.

Lifshitz-like systems and AdS null deformations

Following arXiv:1005.3291 [hep-th], we discuss certain lightlike deformations of $AdS_5\times X^5$ in Type IIB string theory sourced by a lightlike dilaton $Φ(x^+)$ dual to the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory with a lightlike varying gauge coupling. We argue that in the case where the $x^+$-direction is noncompact, these solutions describe anisotropic 3+1-dim Lifshitz-like systems with a potential in the $x^+$-direction generated by the lightlike dilaton. We then describe solutions of this sort with a linear dilaton. This enables a detailed calculation of 2-point correlation functions of operators dual to bulk scalars and helps illustrate the spatial structure of these theories. Following this, we discuss a nongeometric string construction involving a compactification along the $x^+$-direction of this linear dilaton system. We also point out similar IIB axionic solutions. Similar bulk arguments for $x^+$-noncompact can be carried out for deformations of $AdS_4\times X^7$ in M-theory.

Null cosmological singularities and free strings: II

In arXiv:0909.4731 [hep-th], we argued that the free string lightcone Schrodinger wavefunctional in the vicinity of null Kasner-like cosmological singularities has nonsingular time-dependence if the Kasner exponents satisfy certain relations. These backgrounds are anisotropic plane waves with singularities. We first show here that only certain singularities admit a Rosen-Kasner frame with exponents satisfying relations leading to a wavefunctional with nonsingular time-dependence. Then we build on the (Rosen) description further and study various physical observables for a time-dependent harmonic oscillator toy model and then the free string, reconciling this with the corresponding description in the conventional plane wave variables. We find that observables containing no time derivatives are identical in these variables while those with time derivatives are different. Various free string observables are still divergent, perhaps consistent with string oscillator states becoming light in the vicinity of the singularity.

Lifshitz spacetimes from AdS null and cosmological solutions

We describe solutions of 10-dimensional supergravity comprising null deformations of $AdS_5\times S^5$ with a scalar field, which have $z=2$ Lifshitz symmetries. The bulk Lifshitz geometry in 3+1-dimensions arises by dimensional reduction of these solutions. The dual field theory in this case is a deformation of the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We discuss the holographic 2-point function of operators dual to bulk scalars. We further describe time-dependent (cosmological) solutions which have anisotropic Lifshitz scaling symmetries. We also discuss deformations of $AdS\times X$ in 11-dimensional supergravity, which are somewhat similar to the solutions above. In some cases here, we expect the field theory duals to be deformations of the Chern-Simons theories on M2-branes stacked at singularities.

Null cosmological singularities and free strings

We continue exploring free strings in the background of null Kasner-like cosmological singularities, following arXiv:0904.4532 [hep-th]. We study the free string Schrodinger wavefunctional along the lines of arXiv:0807.1517 [hep-th]. We find the wavefunctional to be nonsingular in the vicinity of singularities whose Kasner exponents satisfy certain relations. We compare this with the description in other variables. We then study certain regulated versions of these singularities where the singular region is replaced by a substringy but nonsingular region and study the string spectra in these backgrounds. The string modes can again be solved for exactly, giving some insight into how string oscillator states get excited near the singularity.

On nonsupersymmetric $\BC^4/\BZ_N$, tachyons, terminal singularities and flips

We investigate nonsupersymmetric $\BC^4/\BZ_N$ orbifold singularities using their description in terms of the string worldsheet conformal field theory and its close relation with the toric geometry description of these singularities and their possible resolutions. Analytic and numerical study strongly suggest the absence of nonsupersymmetric Type II terminal singularities (i.e. with no marginal or relevant blowup modes) so that there are always moduli or closed string tachyons that give rise to resolutions of these singularities, although supersymmetric and Type 0 terminal singularities do exist. Using gauged linear sigma models, we analyze the phase structure of these singularities, which often involves 4-dimensional flip transitions, occurring between resolution endpoints of distinct topology. We then discuss 4-dim analogs of unstable conifold-like singularities that exhibit flips, in particular their Type II GSO projection and the phase structure. We also briefly discuss aspects of M2-branes stacked at such singularities and nonsupersymmetric $AdS_4\times S^7/\BZ_N$ backgrounds.

Localized tachyons in C^3/Z_N

We study the condensation of localized closed string tachyons in C^3/Z_N nonsupersymmetric noncompact orbifold singularities via renormalization group flows that preserve supersymmetry in the worldsheet conformal field theory and their interrelations with the toric geometry of these orbifolds. We show that for worldsheet supersymmetric tachyons, the endpoint of tachyon condensation generically includes ``geometric'' terminal singularities (orbifolds that do not have any marginal or relevant Kahler blowup modes) as well as singularities in codimension two. Some of the various possible distinct geometric resolutions are related by flip transitions. For Type II theories, we show that the residual singularities that arise under tachyon condensation in various classes of Type II theories also admit a Type II GSO projection. We further show that Type II orbifolds entirely devoid of marginal or relevant blowup modes (Kahler or otherwise) cannot exist, which thus implies that the endpoints of tachyon condensation in Type II theories are always smooth spaces.

An ansatz for spacetimes of zero gravitational mass : global monopoles and textures

We propose a geometric ansatz, a restriction on Euclidean / Minkowski distance in the embedding space being propotional to distance in the embedded space, to generate spacetimes with vanishing gravitational mass ($R_{ik} u^i u^k = 0, u_i u^i = 1 $). It turns out that these spacetimes can represent global monopoles and textures. Thus the ansatz is a prescription to generate zero mass spacetimes that could describe topological defects, global monopoles and textures.
