On Schrödinger operators with $δ'$-potentials supported on star graphs

The spectral properties of two-dimensional Schrödinger operators with $δ'$-potentials supported on star graphs are discussed. We describe the essential spectrum and give a complete description of situations in which the discrete spectrum is non-trivial but finite. A more detailed study is presented for the case of a star graph with two branches, in particular, the small angle asymptotics for the eigenvalues is obtained.

Precise option pricing by the COS method--How to choose the truncation range

The Fourier cosine expansion (COS) method is used for pricing European options numerically very fast. To apply the COS method, a truncation range for the density of the log-returns need to be provided. Using Markov's inequality, we derive a new formula to obtain the truncation range and prove that the range is large enough to ensure convergence of the COS method within a predefined error tolerance. We also show by several examples that the classical approach to determine the truncation range by cumulants may lead to serious mispricing. Usually, the computational time of the COS method is of similar magnitude in both cases.

An eigenvalue estimate for a Robin $p$-Laplacian in $C^1$ domains

Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be a bounded $C^1$ domain and $p>1$. For $α>0$, define the quantity \[ Λ(α)=\inf_{u\in W^{1,p}(Ω),\, u\not\equiv 0} \Big(\int_Ω|\nabla u|^p\,\mathrm{d}x - α\int_{\partialΩ} |u|^p \,\mathrm{d} s\Big)\Big/ \int_Ω|u|^p\,\mathrm{d} x \] with $\mathrm{d} s$ being the hypersurface measure, which is the lowest eigenvalue of the $p$-laplacian in $Ω$ with a non-linear $α$-dependent Robin boundary condition. We show the asymptotics $Λ(α) =(1-p)α^{p/(p-1)}+o(α^{p/(p-1)})$ as $α$ tends to $+\infty$. The result was only known for the linear case $p=2$ or under stronger smoothness assumptions. Our proof is much shorter and is based on completely different and elementary arguments, and it allows for an improved remainder estimate for $C^{1,λ}$ domains.

Attractive conical surfaces create infinitely many bound states

In this paper we study spectral properties of a three-dimensional Schrödinger operator $-Δ+V$ with a potential $V$ given, modulo rapidly decaying terms, by a function of the distance of $x \in \mathbb{R}^3$ to an infinite conical hypersurface with a smooth cross-section. As a main result we show that there are infinitely many discrete eigenvalues accumulating at the bottom of the essential spectrum which itself is identified as the ground-state energy of a certain one-dimensional operator. Most importantly, based on a result of Kirsch and Simon we are able to establish the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalue counting function using an explicit spectral-geometric quantity associated with the cross-section. This shows a universal character of some previous results on conical layers and $δ$-potentials created by conical surfaces.

Strong coupling asymptotics for $δ$-interactions supported by curves with cusps

Let $Γ\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ be a simple closed curve which is smooth except at the origin, at which it has a power cusp and coincides with the curve $|x_2|=x_1^p$ for some $p>1$. We study the eigenvalues of the Schrödinger operator $H_α$ with the attractive $δ$-potential of strength $α>0$ supported by $Γ$, which is defined by its quadratic form \[ H^1(\mathbb{R}^2)\ni u\mapsto \iint_{\mathbb{R}^2} |\nabla u|^2\,\mathrm{d}x-α\int_Γu^2\, \mathrm{d}s, \] where $\mathrm{d}s$ stands for the one-dimensional Hausdorff measure on $Γ$. It is shown that if $n\in\mathbb{N}$ is fixed and $α$ is large, then the well-defined $n$th eigenvalue $E_n(H_α)$ of $H_α$ behaves as \[ E_n(H_α)=-α^2 + 2^{\frac{2}{p+2}} \mathcal{E}_n \,α^{\frac{6}{p+2}} + \mathcal{O}(α^{\frac{6}{p+2}-η}), \] where the constants $\mathcal{E}_n>0$ are the eigenvalues of an explicitly given one-dimensional Schrödinger operator determined by the cusp, and $η>0$. Both main and secondary terms in this asymptotic expansion are different from what was observed previously for the cases when~$Γ$ is smooth or piecewise smooth with non-zero angles.

Two-dimensional Dirac operators with singular interactions supported on closed curves

We study the two-dimensional Dirac operator with an arbitrary combination of electrostatic and Lorentz scalar $δ$-interactions of constant strengths supported on a smooth closed curve. For any combination of the coupling constants a rigorous description of the self-adjoint realizations of the operators is given and the qualitative spectral properties are described. The analysis covers also all so-called critical combinations of coupling constants, for which there is a loss of regularity in the operator domain. In this case, if the mass is non-zero, the resulting operator has an additional point in the essential spectrum, and the position of this point inside the central gap can be made arbitrary by a suitable choice of the coupling constants. The analysis is based on a combination of the extension theory of symmetric operators with a detailed study of boundary integral operators viewed as periodic pseudodifferential operators.

Robin eigenvalues on domains with peaks

Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\ge 2,$ be a bounded domain with an outward power-like peak which is assumed not too sharp in a suitable sense. We consider the Laplacian $u\mapsto -Δu$ in $Ω$ with the Robin boundary condition $\partial_n u=αu$ on $\partialΩ$ with $\partial_n$ being the outward normal derivative and $α>0$ being a parameter. We show that for large $α$ the associated eigenvalues $E_j(α)$ behave as $E_j(α)\sim -ε_j α^ν$, where $ν>2$ and $ε_j>0$ depend on the dimension and the peak geometry. This is in contrast with the well-known estimate $E_j(α)=O(α^2)$ for the Lipschitz domains.

Discrete spectrum of interactions concentrated near conical surfaces

We study the spectrum of two kinds of operators involving a conical geometry: the Dirichlet Laplacian in conical layers and Schrödinger operators with attractive $δ$-interactions supported by infinite cones. Under the assumption that the cones have smooth cross-sections, we prove that such operators have infinitely many eigenvalues accumulating below the threshold of the essential spectrum and we express the accumulation rate in terms of the eigenvalues of an auxiliary one-dimensional operator with a curvature-induced potential.

An effective Hamiltonian for the eigenvalue asymptotics of a Robin Laplacian with a large parameter

We consider the Laplacian on a class of smooth domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^ν$, $ν\ge 2$, with attractive Robin boundary conditions: \[ Q^Ω_αu=-Δu, \quad \dfrac{\partial u}{\partial n}=αu \text{ on } \partialΩ, \ α>0, \] where $n$ is the outer unit normal, and study the asymptotics of its eigenvalues $E_{j}(Q^Ω_α)$ as well as some other spectral properties for $α\to+\infty$ We work with both compact domains and non-compact ones with a suitable behavior at infinity. For domains with compact $C^2$ boundaries and fixed $j$, we show that \[ E_{j}(Q^Ω_α)=-α^2+μ_j(α)+{\mathcal O}(\log α), \] where $μ_j(α)$ is the $j^{\mbox{th}}$ eigenvalue, as soon as it exists, of $-Δ_{S}-(ν-1)αH$ with $(-Δ_{S})$ and $H$ being respectively the positive Laplace-Beltrami operator and the mean curvature on $\partialΩ$. Analogous results are obtained for a class of domains with non-compact boundaries. In particular, we discuss the existence of eigenvalues in non-compact domains and the existence of spectral gaps for periodic domains. We also show that the remainder estimate can be improved under stronger regularity assumptions. The effective Hamiltonian $-Δ_{S}-(ν-1)αH$ enters the framework of semi-classical Schrödinger operators on manifolds, and we provide the asymptotics of its eigenvalues in the limit $α\to+\infty$ under various geometrical assumptions. In particular, we describe several cases for which our asymptotics provides gaps between the eigenvalues of $Q^Ω_α$ for large $α$.

Mean curvature bounds and eigenvalues of Robin Laplacians

We consider the Laplacian with attractive Robin boundary conditions, \[ Q^Ω_αu=-Δu, \quad \dfrac{\partial u}{\partial n}=αu \text{ on } \partialΩ, \] in a class of bounded smooth domains $Ω\in\mathbb{R}^ν$; here $n$ is the outward unit normal and $α>0$ is a constant. We show that for each $j\in\mathbb{N}$ and $α\to+\infty$, the $j$th eigenvalue $E_j(Q^Ω_α)$ has the asymptotics \[ E_j(Q^Ω_α)=-α^2 -(ν-1)H_\mathrm{max}(Ω)\,α+{\mathcal O}(α^{2/3}), \] where $H_\mathrm{max}(Ω)$ is the maximum mean curvature at $\partial Ω$. The discussion of the reverse Faber-Krahn inequality gives rise to a new geometric problem concerning the minimization of $H_\mathrm{max}$. In particular, we show that the ball is the strict minimizer of $H_\mathrm{max}$ among the smooth star-shaped domains of a given volume, which leads to the following result: if $B$ is a ball and $Ω$ is any other star-shaped smooth domain of the same volume, then for any fixed $j\in\mathbb{N}$ we have $E_j(Q^B_α)>E_j(Q^Ω_α)$ for large $α$. An open question concerning a larger class of domains is formulated.

Strong coupling asymptotics for a singular Schroedinger operator with an interaction supported by an open arc

We consider a singular Schrödinger operator in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$ written formally as $-Δ- βδ(x-γ)$ where $γ$ is a $C^4$ smooth open arc in $\mathbb{R}^2$ of length $L$ with regular ends. It is shown that the $j$th negative eigenvalue of this operator behaves in the strong-coupling limit, $β\to +\infty$, asymptotically as \[ E_j(β)=-\frac{β^2}{4} +μ_j +\mathcal{O}\Big(\dfrac{\logβ}β\Big), \] where $μ_j$ is the $j$th Dirichlet eigenvalue of the operator \[ -\frac{d^2}{ds^2} -\frac{κ(s)^2}{4}\, \] on $L^2(0,L)$ with $κ(s)$ being the signed curvature of $γ$ at the point $s\in(0,L)$.

An example of unitary equivalence between self-adjoint extensions and their parameters

The spectral problem for self-adjoint extensions is studied using the machinery of boundary triplets. For a class of symmetric operators having Weyl functions of a special type we calculate explicitly the spectral projections in the form of operator-valued integrals. This allows one to give a constructive proof of the fact that, in certain intervals, the resulting self-adjoint extensions are unitarily equivalent to a certain parameterizing operator acting in a smaller space, and one is able to provide an explicit form the associated unitary transform. Applications to differential operators on metric graphs and to direct sums are discussed.

Formally self-adjoint quasi-differential operators and boundary value problems

We develop the machinery of boundary triplets for one-dimensional operators generated by formally self-adjoint quasi-differential expression of arbitrary order on a finite interval. The technique are then used to describe all maximal dissipative, accumulative and self-adjoint extensions of the associated minimal operator and its generalized resolvents in terms of the boundary conditions. Some specific classes are considered in greater detail.

New relations between discrete and continuous transition operators on (metric) graphs

We establish several new relations between the discrete transition operator, the continuous Laplacian and the averaging operator associated with combinatorial and metric graphs. It is shown that these operators can be expressed through each other using explicit expressions. In particular, we show that the averaging operator is closely related with the solutions of the associated wave equation. The machinery used allows one to study a class of infinite graphs without assumption on the local finiteness.

On the asymptotics of the principal eigenvalue for a Robin problem with a large parameter in planar domains

Let $Ω\subset \RR^2$ be a domain having a compact boundary $Σ$ which is Lipschitz and piecewise $C^4$ smooth, and let $ν$ denote the inward unit normal vector on $Σ$. We study the principal eigenvalue $E(β)$ of the Laplacian in $Ω$ with the Robin boundary conditions $\partial f/\partialν+βf=0$ on $Σ$, where $β$ is a positive number. Assuming that $Σ$ has no convex corners we show the estimate $E(β)=-β^2- γ_\mxβ+ O\big(β^\{2}{3}\big)$ as $β\to+\infty$, where $γ_\mx$ is the maximal curvature of the boundary.

Quantum waveguides with small periodic perturbations: gaps and edges of Brillouin zones

We consider small perturbations of the Laplace operator in a multi-dimensional cylindrical domain by second order differential operators with periodic coefficients. We show that under certain non-degeneracy conditions such perturbations can open a gap in the continuous spectrum and give the leading asymptotic terms for the gap edges. We also estimate the values of quasi-momentum at which the spectrum edges are attained. The general machinery is illustrated by several new examples in two- and three-dimensional structures.

preprint2011arXiv

Unitary dimension reduction for a class of self-adjoint extensions with applications to graph-like structures

We consider a class of self-adjoint extensions using the boundary triple technique. Assuming that the associated Weyl function has the special form $M(z)=\big(m(z)\Id-T\big) n(z)^{-1}$ with a bounded self-adjoint operator $T$ and scalar functions $m,n$ we show that there exists a class of boundary conditions such that the spectral problem for the associated self-adjoint extensions in gaps of a certain reference operator admits a unitary reduction to the spectral problem for $T$. As a motivating example we consider differential operators on equilateral metric graphs, and we describe a class of boundary conditions that admit a unitary reduction to generalized discrete laplacians.

Resolvent expansions on hybrid manifolds

We study Laplace-type operators on hybrid manifolds, i.e. on configurations consisting of closed two-dimensional manifolds and one-dimensional segments. Such an operator can be constructed by using the Laplace-Beltrami operators on each component with some boundary conditions at the points of gluing. The large spectral parameter expansion of the trace of the second power of the resolvent is obtained. Some questions of the inverse spectral theory are adressed.

Reducible boundary conditions in coupled channels

We study Hamiltonians with point interactions in spaces of vector-valued functions. Using some information from the theory of quantum graphs we describe a class of the operators which can be reduced to the direct sum of several one-dimensional problems. It shown that such reduction is closely connected with the invariance under channel permutations. Examples are provided by some "model" interactions, in particular, the so-called delta, delta-prime, and the Kirchhoff couplings.
