Gravitational Waves from Walking Technicolor

We study gravitational waves from the first-order electroweak phase transition in the $SU(N_c)$ gauge theory with $N_f/N_c\gg 1$ ("large $N_f$ QCD") as a candidate for the walking technicolor, which is modeled by the $U(N_f)\times U(N_f)$ linear sigma model with classical scale symmetry (without mass term), particularly for $N_f=8$ ("one-family model"). This model exhibits spontaneous breaking of the scale symmetry as well as the $U(N_f)\times U(N_f)$ radiatively through the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism $\grave{a}$ la Gildener-Weinberg, thus giving rise to a light pseudo dilaton (techni-dilaton) to be identified with the 125 GeV Higgs. This model possess a strong first-order electroweak phase transition due to the resultant Coleman-Weinberg type potential. We estimate the bubble nucleation that exhibits an ultra supercooling and then the signal for a stochastic gravitational wave produced via the strong first-order electroweak phase transition. We show that the amplitude can be reached to the expected sensitivities of the LISA.

Conformal Barrier and Hidden Local Symmetry Constraints: Walking Technirhos in LHC Diboson Channels

We expand the previous analyses of the conformal barrier on the walking technirho for the 2 TeV diboson excesses reported by the ATLAS collaboration, with a special emphasis on the hidden local symmetry (HLS) constraints. We first show that the Standard Model (SM) Higgs Lagrangian is equivalent to the scale-invariant nonlinear chiral Lagrangian, which is further gauge equivalent to the scale-invariant HLS model, with the scale symmetry realized nonlinearly via SM Higgs as a (pseudo-) dilaton. The scale symmetry forbids the new vector boson decay to the 125 GeV Higgs plus W/Z boson, in sharp contrast to the conventional "equivalence theorem" which is invalidated by the conformality. The HLS forbids mixing between the iso-triplet technirho's, rho_{Pi} and rho_{P}, of the one-family walking technicolor (with four doublets N_D=N_F/2=4), which, without the HLS, would be generated when switching on the standard model gauging. We also present updated analyses of the walking technrho's for the diboson excesses by fully incorporating the constraints from the conformal barrier and the HLS as well as possible higher order effects: still characteristic of the one-family walking technirho is its smallness of the decay width, roughly of order Gamma/M_rho ~ [3/N_C x 1/N_D] x [Gamma/M_rho]_{QCD} ~ 70 GeV/2TeV (N_D= N_C=4), in perfect agreement with the expected diboson resonance with Gamma<100 GeV. The model is so sharply distinguishable from other massive spin 1 models without the conformality and HLS that it is clearly testable at the LHC Run II. If the 2 TeV boson decay to WH/ZH is not observed in the ongoing Run II, then the conformality is operative on the 125 GeV Higgs, strongly suggesting that the 2 TeV excess events are responsible for the walking technirhos and the 125 GeV Higgs is the technidilaton.

Conformal Barrier for New Vector Bosons Decay to the Higgs

The ATLAS collaboration has recently reported excesses about 2.5 sigma at mass around 2 TeV in the diboson channels, which can be identified with new vector bosons as a hint for the new physics. It is shown that spontaneously broken conformal/scale symmetry prohibits new vector bosons decay to the Higgs, which is contrasted to the popular "equivalence theorem" valid only in a special limit not necessarily relevant to the 2 TeV mass. If the decay $V\to WH/ZH$ is not observed in the ongoing Run II of the LHC, then the 125 GeV Higgs can be a dilaton.

Origin of Mass - Horizons Expanding from the Nambu's Theory

Origin of mass may be strong dynamics of matter in the vacuum. Since the initial proposal of Nambu for the origin of the nucleon mass, the dynamical symmetry breaking in the strongly coupled underlying theories has been expanding the horizons in the context of the modern version of the origin of mass beyond the Standard Model (SM). The Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model is a typical strong coupling theory with the non-zero critical coupling, in sharp contrast to its precedent model, the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory for the superconductor. The non-zero critical coupling is also hidden in the asymptotically free gauge theories including QCD and walking technicolor. As is well known, the NJL model can be cast into the SM Higgs Lagrangian. We show that the SM Higgs Lagrangian is simply rewritten into a form of the (approximately) scale-invariant nonlinear sigma model, with both the chiral symmetry and scale symmetry realized nonlinearly, with the SM Higgs being nothing but the (pseudo-) dilaton. The SM Higgs Lagrangian is further gauge equivalent to the scale-invariant Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) Lagrangian, s-HLS, having spin 1 bosons hidden in the SM. As the simplest possible underlying theory for the SM Higgs Lagrangian we first discuss the top quark condensate ("top-mode SM"), where the top-mode dilaton is the 125 GeV Higgs. We then discuss the walking technicolor having near infrared conformality, whose effective theory is the s-HLS model precisely the same as the SM Higgs Lagrangian (with larger chiral symmetry), where the 125 GeV Higgs is successfully identified with the techidilaton.

S-parameter and vector decay constant in QCD with eight fundamental fermions

SU(3) gauge theory with eight massless fundamental fermions seems to be near the conformal boundary, and is a candidate theory of walking technicolor. Along the series of study by LatKMI collaboration using HISQ fermions, S-parameter and vector decay constant, which provide important constraints in the model of electroweak symmetry breaking, are calculated for this theory. Use of various volumes allows a systematic investigation of finite volume effects. A strong sensitivity of the S-parameter to the volume is found.

Topological observables in many-flavour QCD

SU(3) gauge theory with eight massless flavours is believed to be walking, while the corresponding twelve- and four-flavour appear IR-conformal and confining respectively. Looking at the simulations performed by the LatKMI collaboration of these theories, we use the topological susceptibility as an additional probe of the IR dynamics. By drawing a comparison with SU(3) pure gauge theory, we see a dynamical quenching effect emerge at larger number of flavours, which is suggestive of emerging near-conformal and conformal behaviour.

Walking and conformal dynamics in many-flavor QCD

In the search for a realistic walking technicolor model, QCD with many flavors is an attractive candidate. From the series of studies by the LatKMI collaboration, we present updated results of the scaling properties of various hadron spectra, including the (pseudo)scalar, vector, and baryon channels, for $N_f=8$ QCD analyzed with the HISQ action. By comparing these with $N_f=12$ QCD, which has properties consistent with conformality, possible signals of walking dynamics are discussed. We also present a preliminary result of the flavor-singlet pseudoscalar mass in many-flavor QCD.

Walking from 750 GeV to 950 GeV in the Technipion Zoo

If the 750 GeV diphoton excess is identified with the color-singlet isosinglet-technipion, $P^0$ (750), in the one-family walking technicolor, as in our previous paper, then there should exist another color-singlet technipion, isotriplet one, $P^{\pm,3}$, definitely predicted at around 950 GeV independently of the dynamical details. The $P^{\pm,3}(950)$ are produced at the LHC via vector boson and photon fusion processes, predominantly decaying to $W γ$, and $γγ$, respectively. Those walking technicolor signals can be explored at the Run 2, or 3, which would further open a way to a plethora of yet other (colored) technipions.

Walking on the Ladder: 125 GeV Technidilaton, or Conformal Higgs -Dedicated to the late Professor Yoichiro Nambu-

The walking technicolor based on the ladder Schwinger-Dyson gap equation is studied, with the scale-invariant coupling being an idealization of the Caswell-Banks-Zaks infrared fixed point in the "anti-Veneziano limit", such that $N_C \rightarrow \infty$ with $N_C \cdot α(μ^2)=$ fixed and $N_F/N_C=$ fixed ($\gg 1$), of the $SU(N_C)$ gauge theory with massless $N_F$ flavors near criticality. We show that the 125 GeV Higgs can be naturally identified with the technidilaton (TD) predicted in the walking technicolor, a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone (NG) boson of the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the approximate scale symmetry. Ladder calculations yield the TD mass $M_ϕ$ from the trace anomaly as $M_ϕ^2 F_ϕ^2= -4 \langle θ_μ^μ\rangle = - \frac{β(α(μ^2))}{α(μ^2)}\, \langle G_{λν}^2(μ^2)\rangle \simeq N_C N_F\frac{16}{π^4} m_F^4$, independently of the renormalization point $μ$, where $m_F$ is the dynamical mass of the technifermion, and $F_ϕ={\cal O} (\sqrt{N_F N_C}\, m_F)$ the TD decay constant. It reads $M_ϕ^2\simeq (\frac{v_{\rm EW}}{2} \cdot \frac{5 v_{\rm EW}}{F_ϕ})^2 \cdot [\frac{8}{N_F}\frac{4}{N_C}]$, ($v_{\rm EW}=246$ GeV), which implies $F_ϕ\simeq 5 \,v_{\rm EW} $ for $M_ϕ\simeq 125\, {\rm GeV}\simeq \frac{1}{2} v_{\rm EW}$ in the one-family model ($N_C=4, N_F=8$), in good agreement with the current LHC Higgs data. The result reflects a generic scaling $ M_ϕ^2/v_{\rm EW}^2\sim M_ϕ^2/F_ϕ^2 \sim m_F^2 /F_ϕ^2 \sim 1/(N_F N_C) \rightarrow 0 $ as a vanishing trace anomaly, namely the TD has a mass vanishing in the anti-Veneziano limit, similarly to $η^\prime$ meson as a pseudo-NG boson of the ordinary QCD with vanishing $U(1)_A$ anomaly in the Veneziano limit ($N_F/N_C \ll 1$).

2 TeV Walking Technirho at LHC?

The ATLAS collaboration has recently reported an excess of about 2.5 $σ$ global significance at around 2 TeV in the diboson channel with the boson-tagged fat dijets, which may imply a new resonance beyond the standard model. We provide a possible explanation of the excess as the isospin-triplet technivector mesons (technirhos, denoted as $ρ_Π^{\pm,3}$) of the walking technicolor in the case of the one-family model as a benchmark. As the effective theory for the walking technicolor at the scales relevant to the LHC experiment, we take a scale-invariant version of the hidden local symmetry model so constructed as to accommodate technipions, technivector mesons, and the technidilaton in such a way that the model respects spontaneously broken chiral and scale symmetries of the underlying walking technicolor. In particular, the technidilaton, a (pseudo) Nambu-Goldstone boson of the (approximate) scale symmetry predicted in the walking technicolor, has been shown to be successfully identified with the 125 GeV Higgs. Currently available LHC limits on those technihadrons are used to fix the couplings of technivector mesons to the standard-model fermions and weak gauge bosons. We find that the technirho's are mainly produced through the Drell-Yan process and predominantly decay to the dibosons, which accounts for the currently reported excess at around 2 TeV. The consistency with the electroweak precision test and other possible discovery channels of the 2 TeV technirhos are also addressed.

Conformality in twelve-flavour QCD

The spectrum of twelve-flavor QCD has been studied in details by the LatKMI collaboration. In this proceeding we present our updated results for the spectrum obtained with the HISQ action at two lattice spacings, several volumes and fermion masses. In particular, we emphasize the existence of a flavor-singlet scalar state parametrically light with respect to the rest of the spectrum, first reported in our paper. This feature is expected to be present for theories in the conformal window, but the lattice calculation of such a state is difficult and requires noise-reduction techniques together with large statistics, in order to evaluate disconnected diagrams. Being able to provide a robust observed connection between a light flavor-singlet scalar and (near-)conformality is an important step towards observing a light composite Higgs boson in walking technicolor theories on the lattice. We also show updated results for the mass anomalous dimension $γ_m$ obtained from various spectral quantities, including the string tension, under the assumption that the theory is inside the conformal window.

Determination of SU(4)$_{TC}$ Technicolor Gauge Group from Embedding in Extended Technicolor

In technicolor theories using an SU($N_{TC}$) gauge group, the value of $N_{TC}$ is not, {\it a priori}, determined and is typically chosen by phenomenological criteria. Here we present a novel way to determine $N_{TC}$ from the embedding of a one-family technicolor model, with fermions in the fundamental represention of SU($N_{TC}$), in an extended technicolor theory, and use it to deduce that $N_{TC}=4$ in this framework.

Lattice study of the scalar and baryon spectra in many-flavor QCD

In the search for a composite Higgs boson in walking technicolor models, many flavor QCD, in particular with $N_f=8$, is an attractive candidate, and has been found to have a composite flavor-singlet scalar as light as the pion. Based on lattice simulations of this theory with the HISQ action, we will present our preliminary results on the scalar decay constant using the fermionic bilinear operator, and on the mass of the lightest baryon state which could be a dark matter candidate. Combining these two results, implications for dark matter direct detection are also discussed.

Old Wine in a New Bottle: Technidilaton as the 125 GeV Higgs -- Dedicated to the late Professor Yoichiro Nambu

We show that the Standard Model (SM) Higgs Lagrangian is identical to the nonlinear realization of both the scale and chiral symmetries ("scale-invariant nonlinear sigma model"), and is further gauge equivalent to the "scale-invariant Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) model" having possible new vector bosons as the HLS gauge bosons with scale-invariant mass: SM Higgs is nothing but a (pseudo) dilaton. The effective theory of the walking technicolor has precisely the same type of the scale-invariant nonlinear sigma model, thus further having the scale-invariant HLS gauge bosons (technirho's, etc.). The technidilaton mass M_ϕcomes from the trace anomaly, which yields M_ϕ^2 F_ϕ^2 \simeq (2.5)^2 [(8/N_F)(4/N_C)] v^4 via PCDC, in the underlying walking SU(N_C) gauge theory with N_F massless flavors, where F_ϕis the decay constant and v=246 GeV. This implies F_ϕ\simeq 5 v for M_ϕ\simeq 125 GeV \simeq v/2 in the one-family walking technicolor model (N_F=8, N_C=4), in good agreement with the current LHC Higgs data. In the anti-Veneziano limit, N_C \rightarrow \infty, with N_C α= fixed and N_F/N_C= fixed (\gg 1), we have a result: M_ϕ^2/v^2\sim M_ϕ^2/F_ϕ^2 \sim 1/(N_F N_C) \rightarrow 0. Then the technidilaton is a naturally light composite Higgs out of the strongly coupled conformal dynamics, with its couplings even weaker than the SM Higgs.

SU(3) gauge theory with four degenerate fundamental fermions on the lattice

As a part of the project studying large $N_f$ QCD, the LatKMI Collaboration has been investigating the SU(3) gauge theory with four fundamental fermions (four-flavor QCD). The main purpose of studying four-flavor QCD is to provide a qualitative comparison to $N_f= 8$, $12$, $16$ QCD; however, a quantitative comparison to real-world QCD is also interesting. To make such comparisons more meaningful, it is desirable to use the same kind of lattice action consistently, so that qualitative difference of different theories are less affected by artifacts of lattice discretization. Here, we adopt the highly-improved staggered quark action with the tree-level Symanzik gauge action (HISQ/tree), which is exactly the same as the setup for our simulations for $SU(3)$ gauge theories with $N_f=8$, $12$ and $16$ fundamental fermions~\cite{Aoki:2013xza, Aoki:2012eq, Aoki:2014oma}. In the next section, we show the fermion mass dependence of $F_π$, $\langle\barψψ\rangle$, $M_π$, $M_ρ$, $M_N$ and their chiral extrapolations. In section 3, preliminary results of the measurement of the mass of the flavor-singlet scalar bound state will be reported.

Dilaton Chiral Perturbation Theory - Determining Mass and Decay Constant of Technidilaton on the Lattice

We propose a scale-invariant chiral perturbation theory of the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons of the chiral symmetry (pion "pi") as well as the scale symmetry (dilaton "phi") for the large N_f QCD. The resultant dilaton mass M_phi reads M_phi^2= m_phi^2 + (3-gamma_m)(1+gamma_m)/4 (2 N_f F_pi^2/F_phi^2) m_pi^2 + (chiral log corrections), where m_phi, m_pi, gamma_m, F_pi and F_phi are the dilaton mass in the chiral limit, the pion mass, mass anomalous dimension, decay constants of pi and phi, respectively. The chiral extrapolation of the lattice data on M_phi^2 vs m_pi^2 plot then simultaneously determines (m_phi, F_phi) of the technidilaton in the walking technicolor with gamma_m =~1. The chiral logarithmic corrections are explicitly given.

Discovering walking technirho mesons at the LHC

We formulate a scale-invariant hidden local symmetry (HLS) as a low-energy effective theory of walking technicolor (WTC) which includes the technidilaton, technipions, and technirho mesons as the low-lying spectra. As a benchmark for LHC phenomenology, we in particular focus on the one-family model of WTC having eight technifermion flavors, which can be, at energy scales relevant to the reach of the LHC, described by the scale-invariant HLS based on the manifold $[SU(8)_L \times SU(8)_R]_{\rm global} \times SU(8)_{\rm local}/SU(8)_V$, where $SU(8)_{\rm local}$ is the HLS and the global $SU(8)_L \times SU(8)_R$ symmetry is partially gauged by $SU(3) \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ of the standard model. Based on the scale-invariant HLS, we evaluate the coupling properties of the technirho mesons and place limits on the masses from the current LHC data. Then, implications for future LHC phenomenology are discussed by focusing on the technirho mesons produced through the Drell-Yan process. We find that the color-octet technirho decaying to the technidilaton along with the gluon is of interest as the discovery channel at the LHC, which would provide a characteristic signature to probe the one-family WTC.

Higgs as a Top-Mode Pseudo

In the spirit of the top quark condensation, we propose a model which has a naturally light composite Higgs boson, "tHiggs", to be identified with the 126 GeV Higgs discovered at the LHC. The tHiggs, a bound state of the top quark and its flavor (vector-like) partner, emerges as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson (NGB), "Top-Mode Pseudo", together with the exact NGBs to be absorbed into the W and Z bosons as well as another (heavier) Top-Mode Pseudo (CP-odd composite scalar). Those five composite (exact/pseudo) NGBs are dynamically produced simultaneously by a single supercritical four-fermion interaction having U(3) x U(1) symmetry which includes the electroweak symmetry, where the vacuum is aligned by small explicit breaking term so as to break the symmetry down to a subgroup, U(2) x U(1)', in a way not to retain the electroweak symmetry, in sharp contrast to the little Higgs models. The explicit breaking term for the vacuum alignment gives rise to a mass of the tHiggs, which is protected by the symmetry and hence naturally controlled against radiative corrections. Realistic top quark mass is easily realized similarly to the top-seesaw mechanism by introducing an extra (subcritical) four-fermion coupling which explicitly breaks the residual U(2) x U(1)' symmetry. We present a phenomenological Lagrangian of the Top-Mode Pseudos along with the standard model particles, which will be useful for the study of the collider phenomenology. The coupling property of the tHiggs is shown to be consistent with the currently available data reported from the LHC. Several phenomenological consequences and constraints from experiments are also addressed.

Light composite scalar in eight-flavor QCD on the lattice

We present the first observation of a flavor-singlet scalar meson as light as the pion in $N_f=8$ QCD on the lattice, using the Highly Improved Staggered Quark action. Such a light scalar meson can be regarded as a composite Higgs with mass 125 GeV. In accord with our previous lattice results showing that the theory exhibits walking behavior, the light scalar may be a technidilaton, a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson of the approximate scale symmetry in walking technicolor.

Walking Technipions in a Holographic Model

We calculate masses of the technipions in the walking technicolor model with the anomalous dimension gamma_m =1, based on a holographic model which has a naturally light technidilaton phi as a composite Higgs with mass m_phi simeq 125 GeV. The one-family model (with 4 weak-doublets) is taken as a concrete example in such a framework, with the inputs being F_pi=v/2 simeq 123 GeV and m_phi simeq 125 GeV as well as gamma_m=1. It is shown that technipion masses are enhanced by the large anomalous dimension to typically O(1) TeV. We find a correlation between the technipion masses and S^{(TC)}, the S parameter arising only from the technicolor sector. The current LHC data on the technipion mass limit thus constrains S^{(TC)} to be not as large as O(1), giving a direct constraint on the technicolor model building. This is a new constraint on the technicolor sector alone quite independent of other sector connected by the extended-technicolor-type interactions, in sharp contrast to the conventional S parameter constraint from the precision electroweak measurements.

A light composite scalar in eight-flavor QCD on the lattice

In search for a composite Higgs boson (techni-dilaton) in the walking technicolor, we present our preliminary results on the first observation of a light flavor-singlet scalar in a candidate theory for the walking technicolor, the Nf=8 QCD, which was found in our previous paper to have spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking together with remnants of the conformality. Based on simulations with the HISQ-type action on several lattice sizes with various fermion masses, we find evidence of a flavor-singlet scalar meson with mass comparable to that of the Nambu-Goldstone pion in both the small fermion-mass region, where chiral perturbation theory works, and the intermediate fermion-mass region where the hyperscaling relation holds. We further discuss its chiral limit extrapolation in comparison with other states studied in our previous paper: the scalar has a mass much smaller than that of the vector meson, which is compared to the Nambu-Goldstone pion having a vanishing mass in that limit.

Discovering Walking Technicolor at LHC and Lattice

Walking technicolor, having a large anomalous dimension $γ_m \simeq 1$ and approximate scale symmetry, predicts Technidilaton, a light composite Higgs as a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of the approximate scale symmetry, which can be identified with the 125 GeV boson discovered at LHC. I will describe how such a {\it weakly coupled light composite scalar} can be dynamically realized in the {\it strongly coupled dynamics}, and can be fit to the current data at LHC, based on the ladder-like computation and the holographic one. I will also present results of our lattice collaboration (LatKMI Collaboration) searching for a walking theory and a light flavor-singlet scalar bound state in large $N_f$ QCD.

Gluonic Effects on g-2: Holographic View

We study "gluonic effects" (gluon condensation effects) on the hadronic leading order (HLO) contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment (g-2) of leptons, based on a holographic model having explicit gluonic mode introduced for consistency with the operator product expansion of QCD. We find gluonic enhancement of HLO contributions to the muon g-2 by about 6%, which nicely fills in the gap between the holographic estimate without gluonic effects and the phenomenological one using the experimental data as inputs. Similar calculations including the gluonic effects for the electron and the tau lepton g-2 are also carried out in good agreement with the phenomenological estimates. We then apply our holographic estimate to the Walking Technicolor (WTC) where large techni-gluonic effects were shown to be vital for the Technidilaton, (pseudo) Nambu-Goldstone boson of the (approximate) scale symmetry of WTC, to be naturally as light as 125 GeV. It is shown that the value of the techni-HLO contributions to the muon g-2 is 10-100 times enhanced by inclusion of the same amount of the gluonic effects as that realizing the 125 GeV Technidilaton, although such an enhanced techni-HLO contribution is still negligibly small compared with the current deviation of the Standard Model prediction of the muon g-2 from the experiments. The techni-HLO contributions to the tau lepton g-2 is also discussed, suggesting a possible phenomenological relevance to be tested by the future experiments.

Gluonic observables and the scalar spectrum of twelve-flavour QCD

We measure glueball masses and the string tension in twelve-flavour QCD, aiming at comparing the emerging gluonic spectrum to the mesonic one. When approaching the critical surface at zero quark mass, the hierarchy of masses in the different sectors of the spectrum gives a new handle to determine the existence of an infrared fixed point. We describe the details of our gluonic measurements and the results obtained on a large number of gauge configurations generated with the HISQ action. In particular, we focus on the scalar glueball and its mixing with a flavour-singlet fermionic state, which is lighter than the pseudoscalar (would-be pion) state. The results are interesting in view of a light composite Higgs boson in walking technicolor theories.

Is 125 GeV techni-dilaton found at LHC?

A new particle at around 125 GeV has been observed at the LHC, which we show could be identified with the techni-dilaton (TD) predicted in the walking technicolor and thus should be an evidence of walking technicolor. The TD is a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson for the approximate scale symmetry spontaneously broken by techni-fermion condensation, with its lightness being ensured by the approximate scale invariance of the walking technicolor. We test the goodness-of-fit of the TD signatures using the presently available LHC data set, and show that the 125 GeV TD is actually favored by the current data to explain the reported signal strengths in the global fit as well as in each channel including the coupling properties, most notably the somewhat large diphoton event rate.

Light composite scalar in twelve-flavor QCD on the lattice

Based on lattice simulations using highly improved staggered quarks for twelve-flavor QCD with several bare fermion masses, we observe a flavor-singlet scalar state lighter than the pion in the correlators of fermionic interpolating operators. The same state is also investigated using correlators of gluonic interpolating operators. Combined with our previous study, that showed twelve-flavor QCD to be consistent with being in the conformal window, we infer that the lightness of the scalar state is due to infrared conformality. This result shed some light on the possibility of a light composite Higgs boson ("technidilaton") in walking technicolor theories.

Walking signals in Nf=8 QCD on the lattice

We investigate chiral and conformal properties of the lattice QCD with eight flavors (Nf=8) through meson spectrum using the Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) action. We also compare our results with those of Nf=12 and Nf=4 which we study on the same systematics. We find that the decay constant F_pi of the pseudoscalar meson "pion" is non-zero, with its mass M_pi consistent with zero, both in the chiral limit extrapolation of the chiral perturbation theory (ChPT). We also measure other quantities which we find are in accord with the pi data results: The rho meson mass is consistent with non-zero in the chiral limit, and so is the chiral condensate, with its value neatly coinciding with that from the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation in the chiral limit. Thus our data for the Nf=8 QCD are consistent with the spontaneously broken chiral symmetry. Remarkably enough, while the Nf=8 data near the chiral limit are well described by the ChPT, those for the relatively large fermion bare mass m_f away from the chiral limit actually exhibit a finite-size hyperscaling relation, suggesting a large anomalous dimension gamma_m ~ 1. This implies that there exists a remnant of the infrared conformality, and suggests that a typical technicolor ("one-family model") as modeled by the Nf=8 QCD can be a walking technicolor theory having an approximate scale invariance with large anomalous dimension gamma_m ~ 1.

Composite Avenue beyond the Standard Model - Legacy of Sakata in LHC Era

Higgs boson may be a composite particle as Sakata vigorously looked for never-ending substructures of Nature. He proposed the Sakata model for hadrons, which was the prototype of the quark model and thus lauched the last Revolution in particle physics continued all the way up to Kabayashi-Maskawa work which completed the Standard Model today. Inspired by the Sakata's spirit we shall discuss composite Higgs boson in various models of our own for the dynamical symmetry breaking with large anomalous dimension: The techni-dilaton in the walking technicolor (WTC) with $γ_m \simeq 1$, the $\bar t t$ composite ("top-Higgs") in the top-quark condensate model with $γ_m \simeq 2$, and their variants in the models with $1<γ_m <2$ (strong ETC Technicolor, etc.). Among others we will focus on WTC which has an approximate scale symmetry in the region relevant to the dynamical mass generation. Such a conformal gauge dynamics is characterized by the essential singularity scaling, breakdown of the Ginzburg-Landau/Gell-Mann-Levy effective theory, and also by a large anomalous dimension $γ_m =1$. In contrast to the folklore that Technicolor is a "Higgsless theory", there exists a composite Higgs, techni-dilaton, in the WTC as a composite pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson associated with the spontaneously broken (approximate) scale symmetry, with its mass only arising from the (nonperturbative) scale anomaly and hence being much smaller than those of other techni-hadrons. The techni-dilaton has a mass typically of order $500-600 {\rm GeV}$ and can be discovered at LHC. We shall also touch upon the endeavor to discover WTC on the lattice.

Discovering 125 GeV techni-dilaton at LHC

Techni-dilaton (TD) is predicted in walking technicolor (WTC) arising as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson associated with the approximate scale symmetry spontaneously broken by techni-fermion condensation. The TD mass is therefore smaller than those of other techni-hadrons on order of several TeVs, small enough to be within reach of the current LHC search. We present a new method to derive the TD couplings directly from the Ward-Takahashi identities, which enables us to explicitly calculate the quantities relevant to the TD LHC signatures. To set definite benchmarks, we take one-doublet and one-family models of WTC and discuss the TD signatures at LHC, in comparison with those of the standard model (SM) Higgs. It is shown that the TD in the one-doublet model is invisible at the LHC, while the TD signals in the one-family model can be found as a large excess relative to the SM Higgs at around 125 GeV only in the diphoton channel.

Holographic techni-dilaton at 125 GeV

We find that a holographic walking technicolor model has a limit ("conformal limit") where the techni-dilaton (TD) becomes an exactly massless Nambu-Goldstone boson of the scale symmetry with its nonzero finite decay constant F_phi /= 0, which naturally realizes a light TD, say at 125 GeV, near the limit. In such a light TD case, we find that F_phi is uniquely determined by the techni-pion decay constant F_pi independently of the holographic parameters: F_phi/F_pi ~= sqrt{2 N_TF}, with N_TF being the number of techni-fermions. We show that the holographic TD is consistent with a new boson at 125 GeV recently discovered at the LHC.

Lattice study of conformality in twelve-flavor QCD

We study infrared conformality of the twelve-flavor QCD on the lattice. Utilizing the highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) type action which is useful to study the continuum physics, we analyze the lattice data of the mass and the decay constant of a pseudoscalar meson and the mass of a vector meson as well at several values of lattice spacing and fermion mass. Our result is consistent with the conformal hypothesis for the mass anomalous dimension $γ_m \sim 0.4-0.5$.

Low energy spectra in many flavor QCD with Nf=12 and 16

We present our result of the many-flavor QCD. Information of the phase structure of many-flavor SU(3) gauge theory is of great interest, since the gauge theories with the walking behavior near the infrared fixed point are candidates of new physics for the origin of the dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. We study the SU(3) gauge theories with 12 and 16 fundamental fermions. Utilizing the HISQ type action which is useful to study the continuum physics, we analyze the lattice data of the mass and the decay constant of the pseudoscalar meson and the mass of the vector meson as well at several values of lattice spacing and fermion mass. The finite size scaling test in the conformal hypothesis is also performed. Our data is consistent with the conformal scenario for Nf=12. We obtain the mass anomalous dimension $γ_m \sim 0.4-0.5$. An update of $N_f=16$ study is also shown.

Many flavor QCD as exploration of the walking behavior with the approximate IR fixed point

We present the first report of the LatKMI collaboration on the the lattice QCD simulation performed at the KMI computer, "$φ$", for the cases of 4 flavors and 8 flavors, the latter being expected to be a candidate for the walking technicolor having an approximate scale invariance near the infrared fixed point. The simulation was carried out based on the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action. In this proceedings, we report preliminary results on the spectrum, analyzed through the chiral perturbation theory and the finite-size hyperscaling. We observe qualitatively different behavior of the 8-flavor case in contrast to the 4-flavor case which shows clear indication of the hadronic phase as in the usual QCD.

Many flavor QCD with N_f=12 and 16

Information of the phase structure of many flavor SU(3) gauge theory is of great interest for finding a theory which dynamically breaks the electro-weak symmetry. We study the SU(3) gauge theory with fermions for $N_f=12$ and 16 in fundamental representation. Both of them, through perturbation theory, reside in the conformal phase. We try to determine the phase of each theory non-perturbatively with lattice simulation and to find the characteristic behavior of the physical quantities in the phase. HISQ type staggered fermions are used to reduce the discretization error which could compromise the behavior of the physical quantity to determine the phase structure at non-zero lattice spacings. Spectral quantities such as bound state masses of meson channel and meson decay constants are investigated with careful finite volume analysis. Our data favor the conformal over chiral symmetry breaking scenario for both $N_f=12$ and 16.

Study of the conformal hyperscaling relation through the Schwinger-Dyson equation

We study corrections to the conformal hyperscaling relation in the conformal window of the large Nf QCD by using the ladder Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation as a concrete dynamical model. From the analytical expression of the solution of the ladder SD equation, we identify the form of the leading mass correction to the hyperscaling relation. We find that the anomalous dimension, when identified through the hyperscaling relation neglecting these corrections, yields a value substantially lower than the one at the fixed point γ_m^* for large mass region. We further study finite-volume effects on the hyperscaling relation, based on the ladder SD equation in a finite space-time with the periodic boundary condition. We find that the finite-volume corrections on the hyperscaling relation are negligible compared with the mass correction. The anomalous dimension, when identified through the finite-size hyperscaling relation neglecting the mass corrections as is often done in the lattice analyses, yields almost the same value as that in the case of the infinite space-time neglecting the mass correction, i.e., a substantially lower value than γ_m^* for large mass. We also apply the finite-volume SD equation to the chiral-symmetry-breaking phase and find that when the theory is close to the critical point such that the dynamically generated mass is much smaller than the explicit breaking mass, the finite-size hyperscaling relation is still operative. We also suggest a concrete form of the modification of the finite-size hyperscaling relation by including the mass correction, which may be useful to analyze the lattice data.

Anomalous $ω$-$Z$-$γ$ Vertex from Hidden Local Symmetry

We formulate the general form of omega-Z-gamma vertex in the framework based on the hidden local symmetry (HLS), which arises from the gauge invariant terms for intrinsic parity-odd (IP-odd) part of the effective action. Those terms are given as the homogeneous part of the general solution (having free parameters) to the Wess-Zumino (WZ) anomaly equation and hence are not determined by the anomaly, in sharp contrast to the Harvey-Hill-Hill (HHH) action where the relevant vertex is claimed to be uniquely determined by the anomaly. We show that, even in the framework that HHH was based on, the omega-Z-gamma vertex is actually not determined by the anomaly but by the homogeneous (anomaly-free) part of the general solution to the WZ anomaly equation having free parameters in the same way as in the HLS formulation: The HHH action is just a particular choice of the free parameters in the general solution. We further show that the omega-Z-gamma vertex related to the neutrino (nu) - nucleon (N) scattering cross section sigma(nu N -> nu N (N')gamma) is determined not by the anomaly but by the anomaly-free part of the general solution having free parameters. Nevertheless we find that the cross section sigma(nu N -> nu N(N')gamma) is related through the Ward-Takahashi identity to Gamma(omega -> pi^0 gamma) which has the same parameter-dependence as that of sigma(nu N -> nu N(N')gamma) and hence the ratio sigma(nu N -> nu N(N')gamma)/Gamma(omega -> pi^0 gamma) is fixed independently of these free parameters. Other set of the free parameters of the general solution can be fixed to make the best fit of the omega -> pi^0 l^+ l^- process, which substantially differs from the HHH action. This gives a prediction of the cross section sigma(nu N -> nu N (N')gamma^*(l^+ l^-)) to be tested at nu-N collision experiments in the future.

Discovering techni-dilaton at LHC

We present discovery signatures of techni-dilaton (TD) at LHC. The TD was predicted long ago as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson (pNGB) associated with the spontaneous breaking of the approximate scale symmetry in the walking technicolor (WTC) (initially dubbed "scale-invariant technicolor"). Being pNGB, the TD should have a mass M_TD lighter than other techni-hadrons like techni-rho meson; It has recently been estimated to be M_TD ~= 500-600 GeV for the typical WTC model, which is well in the discovery range of the ongoing LHC experiment. Noting that all the TD couplings to the standard model (SM) particles arise only through loop of the techni-fermions with their induced Yukawa couplings to the composite TD, we find that the TD-WW and ZZ couplings get dramatically suppressed compared with those of the SM Higgs which has tree-level couplings proportional to their masses. In contrast, TD couplings to gg, t tbar and gamma gamma are not suppressed and hence are relatively enhanced compared to those of the SM Higgs. We explicitly evaluate the TD LHC production cross sections at sqrt(s)=7 TeV times the branching ratios in terms of the TD mass M_TD as an input parameter for the region 200 GeV < M_TD < 1000 GeV in the typical WTC models. Remarkably, the WW/ZZ mode is shown to be consistent with the recent ATLAS and CMS bounds for M_TD > 350(400) GeV in the one-doublet (one-family) model, thanks to the suppressed WW/ZZ coupling in sharp contrast to the SM Higgs. On the other hand, the gg, gamma gamma and t tbar modes are not suppressed compared to the SM Higgs: Particularly in the one-family model with M_TD ~= 500-600 GeV, the cross section times the TD -> gamma gamma branching ratio gets gigantically enhanced to be ~ 10^(-3)-10^(-2) pb, which is large enough to be discovered within the first-year's run at LHC and hence a smoking-gun of the TD.

Techni-dilaton at Conformal Edge

Techni-dilaton (TD) was proposed long ago in the technicolor (TC) near criticality/conformality. To reveal the critical behavior of TD, we explicitly compute the nonperturbative contributions to the scale anomaly $<θ^μ_μ>$ and to the techni-gluon condensate $<G_{μν}^2>$, which are generated by the dynamical mass m of the techni-fermions. Our computation is based on the (improved) ladder Schwinger-Dyson equation, with the gauge coupling $α$ replaced by the two-loop running one $α(μ)$ having the Caswell-Banks-Zaks IR fixed point $α_*$: $α(μ) \simeq α= α_*$ for the IR region $m < μ< Λ_{TC}$, where $Λ_{TC}$ is the intrinsic scale (analogue of $Λ_{QCD}$ of QCD) relevant to the perturbative scale anomaly. We find that $-<θ^μ_μ>/m^4\to const \ne 0$ and $<G_{μν}^2>/m^4\to (α/α_{cr}-1)^{-3/2}\to\infty$ in the criticality limit $m/Λ_{TC}\sim\exp(-π/(α/α_{cr}-1)^{1/2})\to 0$ ($α=α_* \to α_{cr}$) ("conformal edge"). Our result precisely reproduces the formal identity $<θ^μ_μ>=(β(α)/4 α) <G_{μν}^2>$, where $β(α)=-(2α_{cr}/π) (α/α_{cr}-1)^{3/2}$ is the nonperturbative beta function corresponding to the above essential singularity scaling of $m/Λ_{TC}$. Accordingly, the PCDC implies $(M_{TD}/m)^2 (F_{TD}/m)^2=-4<θ_μ^μ>/m^4 \to const \ne 0$ at criticality limit, where $M_{TD}$ is the mass of TD and $F_{TD}$ the decay constant of TD. We thus conclude that at criticality limit the TD could become a "true (massless) Nambu-Goldstone boson" $M_{TD}/m\to 0$, only when $m/F_{TD}\to 0$, namely getting decoupled, as was the case of "holographic TD" of Haba-Matsuzaki-Yamawaki. The decoupled TD can be a candidate of dark matter.

Techni-dilaton signatures at LHC

We explore discovery signatures of techni-dilaton (TD) at LHC. The TD was predicted long ago as a composite pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson (pNGB) associated with the spontaneous breaking of the approximate scale symmetry in the walking technicolor (WTC). Being pNGB, whose mass arises from the explicit scale-symmetry breaking due to the dynamical mass generation, the TD should have a mass MTD lighter than other techni-hadrons, say MTD \simeq 600GeV for the typical WTC model, which is well in the discovery range of the ongoing LHC experiment. We develop a spurion method of nonlinear realization to calculate the TD couplings to the standard model (SM) particles and explicitly evaluate the TD LHC production cross sections at sqrt{s}=7TeV times the branching ratios in terms of MTD as an input parameter for 200GeV<MTD<1TeV in the typical WTC models: one-doublet model (1DM) and one-family model (1FM). It turns out that the TD signatures are quite different from those of the SM Higgs. We compare the TD->WW/ZZ signature with the recent ATLAS and CMS bounds and find that in the case of 1DM the signature is consistent over the whole mass range due to the large suppression of TD couplings, and by the same token the signal is too tiny for the TD to be visible through this channel at LHC. As for the 1FM, on the other hand, a severe constraint is given on MTD to exclude the TD with MTD<600GeV, which, however, would imply an emergence of somewhat dramatic excess as the TD signature at MTD>600GeV in the near future. We further find a characteristic signature coming from the gamma gamma mode in the 1FM. In sharp contrast to the SM Higgs case, it provides highly enhanced cross section~0.10--1.0fb at around MTD \simeq 600GeV, which is large enough to be discovered during the first few year's run at LHC.

Conformal Higgs, or techni-dilaton- composite Higgs near conformality

In contrast to the folklore that Technicolor (TC) is a "Higgsless theory", we shall discuss existence of a composite Higgs boson, Techni-Dilaton (TD), a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of the scale invariance in the Scale-invariant/Walking/Conformal TC (SWC TC) which generates a large anomalous dimension $γ_m \simeq 1$ in a wide region from the dynamical mass $m$ $= {\cal O}$ (TeV) of the techni-fermion all the way up to the intrinsic scale $Λ_{\rm TC}$ of the SWC TC (analogue of $Λ_{\rm QCD}$), where $Λ_{\rm TC} $ is taken typically as the scale of the Extended TC scale $Λ_{\rm ETC}$: $Λ_{\rm TC} \simeq Λ_{\rm ETC}\sim10^3$ TeV $ (\gg m)$. All the techni-hadrons have mass on the same order ${\cal O} (m)$, which in SWC TC is extremely smaller than the intrinsic scale $Λ_{\rm TC} \simeq Λ_{\rm ETC} $, in sharp contrast to QCD where both are of the same order. The mass of TD arises from the {\it non-perturbative scale anomaly} associated with the techni-fermion mass generation and is typically 500-600 GeV, even {\it smaller than other techni-hadrons} of the same order of ${\cal O} (m)$, in another contrast to QCD which is believed to have no scalar $\bar q q$ bound state lighter than other hadrons. We discuss the TD mass in various methods, Gauged NJL model via ladder Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation, straightforward calculations in the ladder SD/ Bethe-Salpeter equation, and the holographic approach including techni-gluon condensate. The TD may be discovered in LHC.

Holographic QCD Integrated back to Hidden Local Symmetry

We develop a previously proposed gauge-invariant method to integrate out infinite tower of Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of vector and axialvector mesons in a class of models of holographic QCD (HQCD). The HQCD is reduced by our method to the chiral perturbation theory with the hidden local symmetry (HLS) having only the lowest KK mode identified as the HLS gauge boson. We take the Sakai-Sugimoto model as a concrete HQCD, and completely determine the ${\cal O} (p^4)$ terms as well as the ${\cal O}(p^2)$ terms from the DBI part and the anomaly-related (intrinsic parity odd) gauge-invariant terms from the CS part. Effects of higher KK modes are fully included in these terms. To demonstrate power of our method, we compute momentum-dependences of several form factors such as the pion electromagnetic form factors, the $π^0$-$γ$ and $ω$-$π^0$ transition form factors compared with experiment, which was not achieved before due to complication to handle infinite sums. We also study other anomaly-related quantities like $γ^*$-$π^0$-$π^+$-$π^-$ and $ω$-$π^0$-$π^+$-$π^-$ vertex functions.

Holographic Techni-dilaton

Techni-dilaton, a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of scale symmetry, was predicted long ago in the Scale-invariant/Walking/Conformal Technicolor (SWC-TC) as a remnant of the (approximate) scale symmetry associated with the conformal fixed point, based on the conformal gauge dynamics of ladder Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation with non-running coupling. We study the techni-dilaton as a flavor-singlet bound state of techni-fermions by including the techni-gluon condensate (tGC) effect into the previous (bottom-up) holographic approach to the SWC-TC, a deformation of the holographic QCD with $γ_m \simeq 0$ by large anomalous dimension $γ_m \simeq 1$. With including a bulk scalar field corresponding to the gluon condensate, we first improve the Operator Product Expansion of the current correlators so as to reproduce gluonic $1/Q^4$ term both in QCD and SWC-TC. We find in QCD about $10\%$ (negative) contribution of gluon condensate to the $ρ$ meson mass. We also calculate the oblique electroweak $S$-parameter in the presence of the effect of the tGC and find that for the fixed value of $S$ the tGC effects dramatically reduce the flavor-singlet scalar (techni-dilaton) mass $M_{\rm TD}$ (in the unit of $F_π$), while the vector and axial-vector masses $M_ρ$ and $M_{a_1}$ are rather insensitive to the tGC, where $F_π$ is the decay constant of the techni-pion. If we use the range of values of tGC implied by the ladder SD analysis of the non-perturbative scale anomaly in the large $N_f$ QCD near the conformal window, the phenomenological constraint $S \simeq 0.1$ predicts the techni-dilaton mass $M_{\rm TD} \sim 600$ GeV which is within reach of LHC discovery.

Holographic Techni-dilaton, or Conformal Higgs

We study a holographic model dual to walking/conformal technicolor (W/C TC) deforming a hard-wall type of bottom-up setup by including effects from techni-gluon condensation. We calculate masses of (techni-) $ρ$ meson, $a_1$ meson, and flavor/chiral-singlet scalar meson identified with techni-dilaton (TD)/conformal Higgs boson, as well as the $S$ parameter. It is shown that gluon contributions and large anomalous dimension tend to decrease specifically mass of the TD. In the typical model with $S \simeq 0.1$, we find $m_{\rm TD} \simeq 600$ GeV, while $m_ρ,m_{a_1} \simeq 4 {\rm TeV}$.

Quest for the Dynamical Origin of Mass - An LHC perspective from Sakata, Nambu and Maskawa

I review the dynamical symmetry breaking (DSB) approach to the Origin of Mass, which is traced back to the original (2008 Nobel prize) work of Nambu based on the BCS analogue of superconductor where mass of nucleon (then elementary particle) arises due to Cooper paring and pions are provided as massless Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons, being composite as in Fermi-Yang/Sakata model. In this talk I will focus on the modern version of DSB or composite Higgs models: Walking/Conformal Technicolor, Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) or Moose, and Top Quark Condensate, with the their extra dimension versions closely related with HLS. Particular emphasis will be placed on the large anomalous dimension and conformal symmetry at the conformal fixed points, developed along the line of the pioneering work of Maskawa and Nakajima. Due to (approximate) conformal symmetry these models do have composite Higgs particle ("Techni-dilaton", "Top-sigma" etc.). Weakly coupled composite gauge boson is realized at "Vector Manifestation" formulated at conformal fixed point, which may be applied to the composite W/Z boson models. They will be tested in the upcoming LHC experiments.

Conformal Phase Transition in Gauge Theories

The conception of the conformal phase transiton (CPT), which is relevant for the description of non-perturbative dynamics in gauge theories, is introduced and elaborated. The main features of such a phase transition are established. In particular, it is shown that in the CPT there is an abrupt change of the spectrum of light excitations at the critical point, though the phase transition is continuous. The structure of the effective action describing the CPT is elaborated and its connection with the dynamics of the partially conserved dilatation current is pointed out. The applications of these results to QCD, models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, and to the description of the phase diagram in (3+1)-dimensional $ SU(N_c)$ gauge theories are considered.

Can the Nambu-Goldstone Boson Live on the Light-Front?

We show that the Nambu-Goldstone(NG) boson restricted on the light-front(LF) can only exist if we regularize the theory by introducing the explicit breaking NG-boson mass $m_π$. The NG-boson zero mode, when integrated over the LF, must have a singular behavior $\sim 1/m^2_π$ in the symmetric limit of $m^2_π\rightarrow 0$. In the discretized LF quantization this peculiarity is clarified in terms of the zero-mode constraints in the linear $σ$ model. The LF charge annihilates the vacuum, while it is not conserved in the symmetric limit in the NG phase.

Phase Structure of the Gauged Yukawa Model

Based on the ladder Schwinger-Dyson equation, we investigate phase struc- ture of the gauged Yukawa model possessing a global $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ symmetry and an unbroken (vector-like) gauge symmetry. We show that even when we tune the squared mass of the scalar boson in the Lagrangian to be positive, there still exists the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking due to fermion pair condensate (VEV of the composite scalar) triggered by the strong Yukawa coupling larger than a certain critical value. We find a "nontrivial ultraviolet fixed line" and "renormalized trajectories" in the three-dimensional coupling space of the Yukawa coupling, the gauge cou- pling and the "hopping parameter" of the elementary scalar field. Presence of the gauge coupling is crucial to existence of the fixed line. Implications of the result for the lattice calculation and the top quark condensate model are also discussed.
