Quantitative characterization of highly efficient correlated photon-pair source using biexciton resonance

A high efficiency method for the generation of correlated photon pairs accompanied by a reliable means to characterize the efficiency of that process is needed in the study of correlated photon pairs and entangled states involving more than three photons, which have important potential applications in quantum information and quantum communication. In this study, we report the first characterization of the efficiency of generation of correlated photon pairs emitted from a CuCl single crystal using the biexciton-resonance hyper-parametric scattering (RHPS) method which is the highly efficient method of generation of correlated photon pairs. In order to characterize the generation efficiency and signal-to-noise ratio of correlated photon pairs using this method, we investigated the excitation density dependence on the photon counting rate and coincidence counting rate under resonant excitation. The excitation density dependence shows that the power characteristics of the photon counting rates changes from linear to quadratic dependence of the excitation density. This behavior represents a superposition of contributions from correlated photon pairs and non-correlated photons. Photon counting signals in this study were recorded as time-tag data, which provide the photon counting rate and coincidence counting rate simultaneously, and improve the coincidence counting rate by the factor of 200 compared to that obtained in previous work [K. Edamatsu $\it{et\ al}$. Nature $\bf{431}$, 167-170 (2004)]. The analysis of the excitation density dependence shows that one photon-pair is produced by a pump pulse with $2 \times 10^6$ photons. Moreover, the generation efficiency of this method is improved by a factor of $10^7$ compared to that of several methods based on the $χ^{(3)}$ parametric process.

Theory of lifetime of exciton incoherently created below its resonance frequency by inelastic scattering

When an exciton in semiconductor is scattered and its energy is decreased far below the resonance energy of the bare exciton state, it has been considered that an exciton-polariton is created immediately by the scattering process, because there is no exciton level at that energy. However, according to the recent time-resolved measurements of P emission originating from inelastic exciton-exciton scattering, it looks rather natural to consider that the exciton-polariton is created in a finite time scale which is restricted by a coherence volume of the exciton after the scattering. In this interpretation, the exciton remains in this time scale far below its resonance energy as a transient state in a series of processes. We propose an expression of the P-emission lifetime depending on the coherence volume of the scattered excitons through the conversion process from them to the polaritons. The coherence volume of the scattered excitons appears in the calculation of the inelastic scattering process on the assumption of a finite coherence volume of the bottleneck excitons.Time-resolved optical-gain measurements could be a way for investigating the validity of our interpretation.

Forcibly driven coherent soft phonons in GeTe with intense THz-rate pump fields

We propose an experimental technique to generate large amplitude coherent phonons with irradiation of THz-rate pump pulses and to study the dynamics of phase transition in GeTe ferroelectrics. When a single pump pulse irradiates the sample at various pump power densities, the frequency of the soft phonon decreases sub-linearly and saturates at higher pump powers. By contrast, when THz-rate pump pulse sequence irradiates the sample at matched time intervals to forcibly drive the oscillation, a large red-shift of the phonon frequency is observed without saturation effects. After excitation with a four pump pulse sequence, the coherent soft phonon becomes strongly damped leading to a near critical damping condition. This condition indicates that the lattice is driven to a precursor state of the phase transition.

Selective enhancement of coherent optical phonons using THz-rate pulse train

Selective enhancement of coherent optical phonons in Bi-Sb mixed crystals has been performed using terahertz (THz) rate pulse trains generated by spatial phase modulation of femtosecond pulse with a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator. The profile of the shaped pulse train has a flat-toped shape. The Bi-Bi, Bi-Sb, and Sb-Sb vibrations can be enhanced and canceled selectively for pulse trains with a suitable repetition rate.
