Emerging Fermi liquids from regulated Quantum Electron Stars

We construct a fully quantum zero-temperature electron star in a soft-wall regulated anti-de-Sitter Einstein-Maxwell-Dirac theory that is thermodynamically stable compared to the Reissner-Nordström black hole. The soft wall only acts on the effective mass of the fermionic degrees of freedom, and allows for a controlled fully backreacted solution. The star is holographically dual to an RG flow where a gapped Fermi liquid starts to emerge from a UV CFT, but decouples again once the effective energy scale becomes lower than the the gap of the fermionic degrees of freedom. The RG flow then returns to a non-trivial strongly coupled relativistic fixed point with a holographic dual. Our regulated quantum electron star is thus the fermionic analogue of the Horowitz-Roberts-Gubser-Rocha AdS-to-AdS domain wall solution for the holographic superconductor.

Quantum critical Eliashberg theory, the SYK superconductor and their holographic duals

Superconductivity is abundant near quantum-critical points, where fluctuations suppress the formation of Fermi liquid quasiparticles and the BCS theory no longer applies. Two very distinct approaches have been developed to address this issue: quantum-critical Eliashberg theory and holographic superconductivity. The former includes a strongly retarded pairing interaction of ill-defined fermions, the latter is rooted in the duality of quantum field theory and gravity theory. We demonstrate that both are different perspectives of the same theory. We derive holographic superconductivity in form of a gravity theory with emergent space-time from a quantum many-body Hamiltonian - the Yukawa SYK model - where the Eliashberg formalism is exact. Exploiting the power of holography, we then determine the dynamic pairing susceptibility of the model. Our holographic map comes with the potential to use quantum gravity corrections to go beyond the Eliashberg regime.

Isolated zeros destroy Fermi surface in holographic models with a lattice

We study the fermionic spectral density in a strongly correlated quantum system described by a gravity dual. In the presence of periodically modulated chemical potential, which models the effect of the ionic lattice, we explore the shapes of the corresponding Fermi surfaces, defined by the location of peaks in the spectral density at the Fermi level. We find that at strong lattice potentials sectors of the Fermi surface are unexpectedly destroyed and the Fermi surface becomes an arc-like disconnected manifold. We explain this phenomenon in terms of a collision of the Fermi surface pole with zeros of the fermionic Green's function, which are explicitly computable in the holographic dual.

Incoherent thermal transport from dirty black holes

We study thermal transport in strongly disordered, strongly interacting quantum field theories without quasiparticles using gauge-gravity duality. We analyze linear perturbations of black holes with broken translational symmetry in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories of gravity. Using general geometric arguments in the bulk, we derive bounds on thermal conductivity for the dual disordered field theories in one and two spatial dimensions. In the latter case, the thermal conductivity is always non-zero at finite temperature, so long as the dilaton potential is bounded from below. Hence, generic holographic models make non-trivial predictions about the thermal conductivity in a strongly disordered, strongly coupled metal in two spatial dimensions.

Non-perturbative emergence of non-Fermi liquid behaviour in $d=2$ quantum critical metals

We consider the planar local patch approximation of $d=2$ fermions at finite density coupled to a critical boson. In the quenched or Bloch-Nordsieck approximation, where one takes the limit of fermion flavors $N_f\rightarrow 0$, the fermion spectral function can be determined {exactly}. We show that one can obtain this non-perturbative answer thanks to a specific identity of fermionic two-point functions in the planar local patch approximation. The resulting spectrum is that of a non-Fermi liquid: quasiparticles are not part of the exact fermionic excitation spectrum of the theory. Instead one finds continuous spectral weight with power law scaling excitations as in a $d=1$ dimensional critical state. Moreover, at low energies there are three such excitations at three different Fermi surfaces, two with a low energy Green's function $G \sim (ω-v_*k)^{-1/2}$ and one with $G \sim |ω+k|^{-1/3}$.

Shock waves, rarefaction waves and non-equilibrium steady states in quantum critical systems

We re-examine the emergence of a universal non-equilibrium steady state following a local quench between quantum critical heat baths in spatial dimensions greater than one. We show that energy transport proceeds by the formation of an instantaneous shock wave and a broadening rarefaction wave on either side of the interface, and not by two shock waves as previously proposed. For small temperature differences the universal steady state energy currents of the two-shock and rarefaction-shock solutions coincide. Over a broad range of parameters, the difference in the energy flow across the interface between these two solutions is at the level of two percent. The properties of the energy flow remain fully universal and independent of the microscopic theory. We briefly discuss the width of the shock wave in a viscous fluid, the effects of momentum relaxation, and the generalization to charged fluids.

Absence of disorder-driven metal-insulator transitions in simple holographic models

We study electrical transport in a strongly coupled strange metal in two spatial dimensions at finite temperature and charge density, holographically dual to Einstein-Maxwell theory in an asymptotically $\mathrm{AdS}_4$ spacetime, with arbitrary spatial inhomogeneity, up to mild assumptions including emergent isotropy. In condensed matter, these are candidate models for exotic strange metals without long-lived quasiparticles. We prove that the electrical conductivity is bounded from below by a universal minimal conductance: the quantum critical conductivity of a clean, charge-neutral plasma. Beyond non-perturbatively justifying mean-field approximations to disorder, our work demonstrates the practicality of new hydrodynamic insight into holographic transport.

Holographic dual of a time machine

We apply the $AdS/CFT$ holography to the simplest possible eternal time machine solution in $AdS_3$ based on two conical defects moving around their center of mass along a circular orbit. Closed timelike curves in this space-time extend all the way to the boundary of $AdS_3$, violating causality of the boundary field theory. By use of the geodesic approximation we address the "grandfather paradox" in the dual $1+1$ dimensional field theory and calculate the two-point retarded Green function. It has a non-trivial analytical structure both at negative and positive times, providing us with an intuition on how an interacting quantum field could behave once causality is broken. In contrast with the previous considerations our calculations reveal the possibility of a consistent and controllable evolution of a quantum system without any need to impose additional consistency constraints.

S-Wave Superconductivity in Anisotropic Holographic Insulators

Within gauge/gravity duality, we consider finite density systems in a helical lattice dual to asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-times with Bianchi VII symmetry. These systems can become an anisotropic insulator in one direction while retaining metallic behavior in others. To this model, we add a $U(1)$ charged scalar and show that below a critical temperature, it forms a spatially homogeneous condensate that restores isotropy in a new superconducting ground state. We determine the phase diagram in terms of the helix parameters and perform a stability analysis on its IR fixed point corresponding to a finite density condensed phase at zero temperature. Moreover, by analyzing fluctuations about the gravity background, we study the optical conductivity. Due to the lattice, this model provides an example for a holographic insulator-superfluid transition in which there is no unrealistic delta-function peak in the normal phase DC conductivity. Our results suggest that in the zero temperature limit, all degrees of freedom present in the normal phase condense. This, together with the breaking of translation invariance, has implications for Homes' and Uemuras's relations. This is of relevance for applications to real world condensed matter systems. We find a range of parameters in this system where Homes' relation holds.

BCS instabilities of electron stars to holographic superconductors

We study fermion pairing and condensation towards an ordered state in strongly coupled quantum critical systems with a holographic AdS/CFT dual. On the gravity side this is modeled by a system of charged fermion interacting through a BCS coupling. At finite density such a system has a BCS instability. We combine the relativistic version of mean-field BCS with the semi-classical fluid approximation for the many-body state of fermions. The resulting groundstate is the AdS equivalent of a charged neutron star with a superconducting core. The spectral function of the fermions confirms that the ground state is ordered through the condensation of the pair operator. A natural variant of the BCS star is shown to exist where the gap field couples Stueckelberg-like to the AdS Maxwell field. This enhances the tendency of the system to superconduct.

Correlating correlation functions of primordial perturbations

We explore the correlations between correlation functions of the primordial curvature perturbation produced during inflation. We find that for general single field inflation, other than the source terms which depend on the model details, higher order correlation functions are characterized by the power spectrum, its spectral index and running. The correlation between the bispectrum and power spectrum is presented as an explicit example of our systematic approach.

Holographic duality and the resistivity of strange metals

We present a strange metal, described by a holographic duality, which reproduces the famous linear resistivity of the normal state of the copper oxides, in addition to the linear specific heat. This holographic metal reveals a simple and general mechanism for producing such a resistivity, which requires only quenched disorder and a strongly interacting, locally quantum critical state. The key is the minimal viscosity of the latter: unlike in a Fermi-liquid, the viscosity is very small and therefore is important for the electrical transport. This mechanism produces a resistivity proportional to the electronic entropy.

Non-equilibrium steady states in the Klein-Gordon theory

We construct non-equilibrium steady states in the Klein-Gordon theory in arbitrary space dimension $d$ following a local quench. We consider the approach where two independently thermalized semi-infinite systems, with temperatures $T_{\rm L}$ and $T_{\rm R}$, are connected along a $d-1$-dimensional hypersurface. A current-carrying steady state, described by thermally distributed modes with temperatures $T_{\rm L}$ and $T_{\rm R}$ for left and right-moving modes, respectively, emerges at late times. The non-equilibrium density matrix is the exponential of a non-local conserved charge. We obtain exact results for the average energy current and the complete distribution of energy current fluctuations. The latter shows that the long-time energy transfer can be described by a continuum of independent Poisson processes, for which we provide the exact weights. We further describe the full time evolution of local observables following the quench. Averages of generic local observables, including the stress-energy tensor, approach the steady state with a power-law in time, where the exponent depends on the initial conditions at the connection hypersurface. We describe boundary conditions and special operators for which the steady state is reached instantaneously on the connection hypersurface. A semiclassical analysis of freely propagating modes yields the average energy current at large distances and late times. We conclude by comparing and contrasting our findings with results for interacting theories and provide an estimate for the timescale governing the crossover to hydrodynamics. As a modification of our Klein-Gordon analysis we also include exact results for free Dirac fermions.

Pairing induced superconductivity in holography

We study pairing induced superconductivity in large $N$ strongly coupled systems at finite density using holography. In the weakly coupled dual gravitational theory the mechanism is conventional BCS theory. An IR hard wall cut-off is included to ensure that we can controllably address the dynamics of a single confined Fermi surface. We address in detail the interplay between the scalar order parameter field and fermion pairing. Adding an explicitly dynamical scalar operator with the same quantum numbers as the fermion-pair, the theory experiences a BCS/BEC crossover controlled by the relative scaling dimensions. We find the novel result that this BCS/BEC crossover exposes resonances in the canonical expectation value of the scalar operator. This occurs not only when the scaling dimension is degenerate with the Cooper pair, but also with that of higher derivative paired operators. We speculate that a proper definition of the order parameter which takes mixing with these operators into account stays finite nevertheless.

Scale-invariant hyperscaling-violating holographic theories and the resistivity of strange metals with random-field disorder

We compute the direct current resistivity of a scale-invariant, $d$-dimensional strange metal with dynamic critical exponent $z$ and hyperscaling-violating exponent $θ$, weakly perturbed by a scalar operator coupled to random-field disorder that locally breaks a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. Independent calculations via Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton holography and memory matrix methods lead to the same results. We show that random field disorder has a strong effect on resistivity: charge carriers in the infrared are easily depleted, as the relaxation time for momentum is surprisingly small. In the course of our holographic calculation we use a non-trivial dilaton coupling to the disordered scalar, allowing us to study a strongly-coupled scale invariant theory with $θ\ne 0$. Using holography, we are also able to determine the disorder strength at which perturbation theory breaks down. Curiously, for locally critical theories this breakdown occurs when the resistivity is proportional to the entropy density, up to a possible logarithmic correction.

Bose-Fermi competition in holographic metals

We study the holographic dual of a finite density system with both bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom. There is no evidence for a universal bose-dominated ground state. Instead, depending on the relative conformal weights the preferred groundstate is either pure AdS-Reissner-Nordstrom, a holographic superconductor, an electron star, or a novel mixed state that is best characterized as a hairy electron star.

Consistency condition for inflation from (broken) conformal symmetry

We investigate the symmetry constraints on the bispectrum, i.e. the three-point correlation function of primordial density fluctuations, in slow-roll inflation. It follows from the defining property of slow-roll inflation that primordial correlation functions inherit most of their structure from weakly broken de Sitter symmetries. Using holographic techniques borrowed from the AdS/CFT correspondence, the symmetry constraints on the bispectrum can be mapped to a set of stress-tensor Ward identities in a weakly broken 2+1-dimensional Euclidean CFT. We construct the consistency condition from these Ward identities using conformal perturbation theory. This requires a second order Ward identity and the use of the evolution equation. Our result also illustrates a subtle difference between conformal perturbation theory and the slow roll expansion.

Decoupling limits in multi-sector supergravities

Conventional approaches to cosmology in supergravity assume the existence of multiple sectors that only communicate gravitationally. In principle these sectors decouple in the limit Planck mass to infinity. In practice such a limit is delicate: for generic supergravities, where sectors are combined by adding their Kahler functions, the separate superpotentials must contain non-vanishing vacuum expectation values supplementing the naive global superpotential. We show that this requires non-canonical scaling in the naive supergravity superpotential couplings to recover independent sectors of globally supersymmetric field theory in the decoupling limit Planck Mass to infinity.

Far from equilibrium energy flow in quantum critical systems

We investigate far from equilibrium energy transport in strongly coupled quantum critical systems. Combining results from gauge-gravity duality, relativistic hydrodynamics, and quantum field theory, we argue that long-time energy transport occurs via a universal steady-state for any spatial dimensionality. This is described by a boosted thermal state. We determine the transport properties of this emergent steady state, including the average energy flow and its long-time fluctuations.

Model-Independent Signatures of New Physics in non-Gaussianity

We compute the model-independent contributions to the primordial bispectrum and trispectrum in de Sitter space due to high-energy physics. We do this by coupling a light inflaton to an auxiliary heavy field, and then evaluating correlation functions in the Schwinger-Keldysh "in-in" formalism. The high-energy physics produces corrections parametrized by $H/M$ where $H$ is the scale of inflation and $M$ is the mass of the heavy field. The bispectrum peaks near the elongated shape, but otherwise contains no features. The trispectrum receives no corrections at order $H/M$.

Model-Independent Signatures of New Physics in Slow-Roll Inflation

We compute the universal generic corrections to the power spectrum in slow-roll inflation due to unknown high-energy physics. We arrive at this result via a careful integrating out of massive fields in the "in-in" formalism yielding a consistent and predictive low-energy effective description in time-dependent backgrounds. The density power spectrum is universally modified at leading order in $H/M$, the ratio of the scale of inflation to the scale of new physics; the tensor power spectrum receives only subleading corrections. In doing so, we show how to make sense of a physical momentum-cut-off in loop integrals despite dynamical redshifts, and how the result can be captured in a combined effective action/effective density matrix, where the latter contains non-adiabatic terms which modify the boundary conditions.

Quantum corrected phase diagram of holographic fermions

We study the phases of strongly correlated electron systems in two spatial dimensions in the framework of AdS${}_4$/CFT${}_3$ correspondence. The AdS (gravity) model consists of a Dirac fermion coupled to electromagnetic field and gravity. To classify the ground states of strongly correlated electrons on the CFT side and to construct the full phase diagram of the system, we construct a quantum many-body model of bulk fermion dynamics, based on the WKB approximation to the Dirac equation. At low temperatures, we find a quantum corrected approximation to the electron star where the edge is resolved in terms of wavefunctions extended fully through AdS. At high temperatures, the system exhibits a {\em first} order thermal phase transition to a charged AdS-RN black hole in the bulk and the emergence of local quantum criticality on the CFT side. This change from the third order transition experienced by the semi-classical electron star restores the intuition that the transition between the critical AdS-RN liquid and the finite density Fermi system is of van der Waals liquid-gas type.

Lattice potentials and fermions in holographic non Fermi-liquids: hybridizing local quantum criticality

We study lattice effects in strongly coupled systems of fermions at a finite density described by a holographic dual consisting of fermions in Anti-de-Sitter space in the presence of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. The lattice effect is encoded by a periodic modulation of the chemical potential with a wavelength of order of the intrinsic length scales of the system. This corresponds with a highly complicated "band structure" problem in AdS, which we only manage to solve in the weak potential limit. The "domain wall" fermions in AdS encoding for the Fermi surfaces in the boundary field theory diffract as usually against the periodic lattice, giving rise to band gaps. However, the deep infrared of the field theory as encoded by the near horizon AdS2 geometry in the bulk reacts in a surprising way to the weak potential. The hybridization of the fermions bulk dualizes into a linear combination of CFT1 "local quantum critical" propagators in the bulk, characterized by momentum dependent exponents displaced by lattice Umklapp vectors. This has the consequence that the metals showing quasi-Fermi surfaces cannot be localized in band insulators. In the AdS2 metal regime, where the conformal dimension of the fermionic operator is large and no Fermi surfaces are present at low T/μ, the lattice gives rise to a characteristic dependence of the energy scaling as a function of momentum. We predict crossovers from a high energy standard momentum AdS2 scaling to a low energy regime where exponents found associated with momenta "backscattered" to a lower Brillioun zone in the extended zone scheme. We comment on how these findings can be used as a unique fingerprint for the detection of AdS2 like "pseudogap metals" in the laboratory.

On Holographic Entanglement Entropy of Charged Matter

We study holographic entanglement entropy in the background of charged dilatonic black holes which can be viewed as holographic duals of certain finite density states of N=4 super Yang-Mills. These charged black holes are distinguished in that they have vanishing ground state entropy. The entanglement entropy for a slab experiences a second order phase transition as the thickness of the slab is varied, while the entanglement entropy for a sphere is a smooth function of the radius. This suggests that the second scale introduced by the anisotropy of the slab plays an important role in driving the phase transition. In both cases we do not observe any logarithmic violation of the area law indicative of hidden Fermi surfaces. We investigate how these results are affected by the inclusion of the Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk gravitational action. We also observe that such addition to the bulk action does not change the logarithmic violation of the area law in the backgrounds with hyperscaling violation.

Anisotropic Drag Force from 4D Kerr-AdS Black Holes

Using AdS/CFT we investigate the effect of angular-momentum-induced anisotropy on the instantaneous drag force of a heavy quark. The dual description is that of a string moving in the background of a Kerr-AdS black holes. The system exhibits the expected focussing of jets towards the impact parameter plane. We put forward that we can use the connection between this focussing behavior and the angular momentum induced pressure gradient to extrapolate the pressure gradient correction to the drag force that can be used for transverse elliptic flow in realistic RHIC. The result is recognizable as a relativistic pressure gradient force.

Constructing the AdS dual of a Fermi liquid: AdS Black holes with Dirac hair

We provide new evidence that the holographic dual to a strongly coupled charged Fermi Liquid has a non-zero fermion density in the bulk. We show that the pole-strength of the stable quasiparticle characterizing the Fermi surface is encoded in the spatially averaged AdS probability density of a single normalizable fermion wavefunction in AdS. Recalling Migdal's theorem which relates the pole strength to the Fermi-Dirac characteristic discontinuity in the number density at $\ome_F$, we conclude that the AdS dual of a Fermi liquid is described by occupied on-shell fermionic modes in AdS. Encoding the occupied levels in the total probability density of the fermion field directly, we show that an AdS Reissner-Nordström black hole in a theory with charged fermions has a critical temperature, at which the system undergoes a first-order transition to a black hole with a non-vanishing profile for the bulk fermion field. Thermodynamics and spectral analysis confirm that the solution with non-zero AdS fermion-profile is the preferred ground state at low temperatures.

Model Independent Signatures of New Physics in the Inflationary Power Spectrum

We compute the universal generic corrections to the inflationary power spectrum due to unknown high-energy physics. We arrive at this result via a careful integrating out of massive fields in the "in-in" formalism yielding a consistent and predictive low-energy effective description in time-dependent backgrounds. We find that the power spectrum is universally modified at order H/M, where H is the scale of inflation. This is qualitatively different from the universal corrections in time-independent backgrounds, and it suggests that such effects may be present in upcoming cosmological observations.

Observing the origin of superconductivity in quantum critical metals

Despite intense efforts during the last 25 years, the physics of unconventional superconductors, including the cuprates with a very high transition temperature, is still a controversial subject. It is believed that superconductivity in many of these strongly correlated metallic systems originates in the physics of quantum phase transitions, but quite diverse perspectives have emerged on the fundamentals of the electron-pairing physics, ranging from Hertz style critical spin fluctuation glue to the holographic superconductivity of string theory. Here we demonstrate that the gross energy scaling differences that are behind these various pairing mechanisms are directly encoded in the frequency and temperature dependence of the dynamical pair susceptibility. This quantity can be measured directly via the second order Josephson effect and it should be possible employing modern experimental techniques to build a `pairing telescope' that gives a direct view on the origin of quantum critical superconductivity.

Spectral probes of the holographic Fermi groundstate: dialing between the electron star and AdS Dirac hair

We argue that the electron star and the AdS Dirac hair solution are two limits of the free charged Fermi gas in AdS. Spectral functions of holographic duals to probe fermions in the background of electron stars have a free parameter that quantifies the number of constituent fermions that make up the charge and energy density characterizing the electron star solution. The strict electron star limit takes this number to be infinite. The Dirac hair solution is the limit where this number is unity. This is evident in the behavior of the distribution of holographically dual Fermi surfaces. As we decrease the number of constituents in a fixed electron star background the number of Fermi surfaces also decreases. An improved holographic Fermi groundstate should be a configuration that shares the qualitative properties of both limits.

The everpresent eta-problem: knowledge of all hidden sectors required

We argue that the eta-problem in supergravity inflation cannot be solved without knowledge of the ground state of hidden sectors that are gravitationally coupled to the inflaton. If the hidden sector breaks supersymmetry independently, its fields cannot be stabilized during cosmological evolution of the inflaton. We show that both the subsequent dynamical mixing between sectors as well as the lightest mass of the hidden sector are set by the scale of supersymmetry breaking in the hidden sector. The true cosmological eta-parameter arises from a linear combination of the lightest mode of the hidden sector with the inflaton. Generically, either the true eta deviates considerably from the naïve eta implied by the inflaton sector alone, or one has to consider a multifield model. Only if the lightest mass in the hidden sector is much larger than the inflaton mass and if the inflaton mass is much larger than the scale of hidden sector supersymmetry breaking, is the effect of the hidden sector on the slow-roll dynamics of the inflaton negligible.

A worldsheet perspective on string inflation

We investigate the constraints of slow-roll inflation on the string worldsheet. A general gravity-matter set-up is used in which the worldsheet consists of an abstract CFT coupled to a 3+1 dimensional non-linear sigma model. The empirical slow-roll parameters are expressed in terms of the beta functions of operators in the matter/internal CFT and the beta function of the dilaton. The result confirms that inflation is only sensitive to macroscopic properties of the matter sector, and that in string theory inflation is a non-perturbative (in g_s) phenomenon and one must go beyond tree-level string theory.

String Theory, Quantum Phase Transitions and the Emergent Fermi-Liquid

A central problem in quantum condensed matter physics is the critical theory governing the zero temperature quantum phase transition between strongly renormalized Fermi-liquids as found in heavy fermion intermetallics and possibly high Tc superconductors. We present here results showing that the mathematics of string theory is capable of describing such fermionic quantum critical states. Using the Anti-de-Sitter/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence to relate fermionic quantum critical fields to a gravitational problem, we compute the spectral functions of fermions in the field theory. By increasing the fermion density away from the relativistic quantum critical point, a state emerges with all the features of the Fermi-liquid.

Decoupling in an expanding universe: boundary RG-flow affects initial conditions for inflation

We study decoupling in FRW spacetimes, emphasizing a Lagrangian description throughout. To account for the vacuum choice ambiguity in cosmological settings, we introduce an arbitrary boundary action representing the initial conditions. RG flow in these spacetimes naturally affects the boundary interactions. As a consequence the boundary conditions are sensitive to high-energy physics through irrelevant terms in the boundary action. Using scalar field theory as an example, we derive the leading dimension four irrelevant boundary operators. We discuss how the known vacuum choices, e.g. the Bunch-Davies vacuum, appear in the Lagrangian description and square with decoupling. For all choices of boundary conditions encoded by relevant boundary operators, of which the known ones are a subset, backreaction is under control. All, moreover, will generically feel the influence of high-energy physics through irrelevant (dimension four) boundary corrections. Having established a coherent effective field theory framework including the vacuum choice ambiguity, we derive an explicit expression for the power spectrum of inflationary density perturbations including the leading high energy corrections. In accordance with the dimensionality of the leading irrelevant operators, the effect of high energy physics is linearly proportional to the Hubble radius H and the scale of new physics L= 1/M.

General covariance of the non-abelian DBI-action

In this paper we study the action for N D0-branes in a curved background. In particular, we focus on the meaning of space-time diffeomorphism invariance. For a single D-brane, diffeomorphism invariance acts in a naive way on the world-volume fields, but for multiple D-branes, the meaning of diffeomorphism invariance is much more obscure. The problem goes beyond the determination of an ordering of the U(N)-valued fields, because one can show that there is no lift of ordinary diffeomorphisms to matrix-valued diffeomorphisms. On the other hand, the action can presumably be constructed from perturbative string theory calculations. Based on the general characteristics of such calculations we determine a set of constraints on the action for N D0-branes, that ensure space-time covariance. These constraints can be solved order by order, but they are insufficient to determine the action completely. All solutions to the constraints obey the axioms of D-geometry. Moreover the action must contain new terms. This exhibits clearly that the answer is more than a suitable ordering of the action of a single D0 brane.

Dynamical Topology Change in M Theory

We study topology change in M theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau three-folds in the presence of G flux (the four form field strength). In particular, we discuss vacuum solutions in strongly coupled heterotic string theory in which the topology change is inevitable within a single spacetime background. For rather generic choices of initial conditions, the field equations drive the Kahler moduli outside the classical moduli space of a Calabi-Yau manifold. Consistency of the solution suggests that degenerate flop curves - just as wrapped M theory fivebranes - carry magnetic charges under the four form field strength.

Warped Compactifications in M and F Theory

We study M and F theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau four-folds in the presence of non-trivial background flux. The geometry is warped and belongs to the class of p-brane metrics. We solve for the explicit warp factor in the orbifold limit of these compactifications, compare our results to some of the more familiar recently studied warped scenarios, and discuss the effects on the low-energy theory. As the warp factor is generated solely by backreaction, we may use topological arguments to determine the massless spectrum. We perform the computation for the case where the four-fold equals K3 \times K3.

Holographic Normal Ordering and Multi-particle States in the AdS/CFT Correspondence

The general correlator of composite operators of N=4 supersymmetric gauge field theory is divergent. We introduce a means for renormalizing these correlators by adding a boundary theory on the AdS space correcting for the divergences. Such renormalizations are not equivalent to the standard normal ordering of current algebras in two dimensions. The correlators contain contact terms that contribute to the OPE; we relate them diagrammatically to correlation functions of compound composite operators dual to multi-particle states.

Mode regularization, time slicing, Weyl ordering and phase space path integrals for quantum mechanical nonlinear sigma models

A simple, often invoked, regularization scheme of quantum mechanical path integrals in curved space is mode regularization: one expands fields into a Fourier series, performs calculations with only the first $M$ modes, and at the end takes the limit $M \to \infty$. This simple scheme does not manifestly preserve reparametrization invariance of the target manifold: particular noncovariant terms of order $\hbar^2$ must be added to the action in order to maintain general coordinate invariance. Regularization by time slicing requires a different set of terms of order $\hbar^2$ which can be derived from Weyl ordering of the Hamiltonian. With these counterterms both schemes give the same answers to all orders of loops. As a check we perform the three-loop calculation of the trace anomaly in four dimensions in both schemes. We also present a diagrammatic proof of Matthews' theorem that phase space and configuration space path integrals are equal.
