Simulations of MRI Guided and Powered Ferric Applicators for Tetherless Delivery of Therapeutic Interventions

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a well-established modality for pre-operative planning and is also explored for intra-operative guidance of procedures such as intravascular interventions. Among the experimental robot-assisted technologies, the magnetic field gradients of the MRI scanner are used to power and maneuver ferromagnetic applicators for accessing sites in the patient's body via the vascular network. In this work, we propose a computational platform for preoperative planning and modeling of MRI-powered applicators inside blood vessels. This platform was implemented as a two-way data and command pipeline that links the MRI scanner, the computational core, and the operator. The platform first processes multi-slice MR data to extract the vascular bed and then fits a virtual corridor inside the vessel. This corridor serves as a virtual fixture (VF), a forbidden region for the applicators to avoid vessel perforation or collision. The geometric features of the vessel centerline, the VF, and MRI safety compliance (dB/dt, max available gradient) are then used to generate magnetic field gradient waveforms. Different blood flow profiles can be user-selected, and those parameters are used for modeling the applicator's maneuvering. The modeling module further generates cues about whether the selected vascular path can be safely maneuvered. Given future experimental studies that require a real-time operation, the platform was implemented on the Qt framework (C/C++) with software modules performing specific tasks running on dedicated threads: PID controller, generation of VF, generation of MR gradient waveforms.

On the zeros of certain Sheffer sequences and their cognate sequences

Given a Sheffer sequence of polynomials, we introduce the notion of an associated sequence called the cognate sequence. We study the relationship between the zeros of this pair of associated sequences and show that in case of an Appell sequence, as well as a more general family of Sheffer sequences, the zeros of the members of each sequence (for large n) are either real, or lie on a line $\Re (z)=c$. In addition to finding the zero locus, we also find the limiting probability distribution function of such sequences.

The zero locus and some combinatorial properties of certain exponential Sheffer sequences

We present combinatorial and analytical results concerning a Sheffer sequence with an exponential generating function of the form $G(s,z)=e^{czs+αz^{2}+βz^{4}}$, where $α, β, c \in \mathbb{R}$ with $β<0$ and $c\neq 0$. We demonstrate that the zeros of all polynomials in such a Sheffer sequence are either real, or purely imaginary. Additionally, using the properties of Riordan matrices we show that our Sheffer sequence satisfies a three-term recurrence relation of order 4, and we also exhibit a connection between the coefficients of these Sheffer polynomials and the number of nodes with a a given label in certain marked generating trees.

Zeros of a table of polynomials satisfying a four-term contiguous relation

For any $A(z),B(z),C(z)\in\mathbb{C}[z]$, we study the zero distribution of a table of polynomials $\left\{ P_{m,n}(z)\right\} _{m,n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}}$ satisfying the recurrence relation \[ P_{m,n}(z)=A(z)P_{m-1,n}(z)+B(z)P_{m,n-1}(z)+C(z)P_{m-1,n-1}(z) \] with the initial condition $P_{0,0}(z)=1$ and $P_{-m,-n}(z)=0$ $\forall m,n\in\mathbb{N}$. We show that the zeros of $P_{m,n}(z)$ lie on a curve whose equation is given explicitly in terms of $A(z),B(z)$, and $C(z)$. We also study the zero distribution of a case with a general initial condition.

On combinatorial properties and the zero distribution of certain Sheffer sequences

We present combinatorial and analytical results concerning a Sheffer sequence with a generating function of the form $G(x,z)=Q(z)^{x}Q(-z)^{1-x}$, where $Q$ is a quadratic polynomial with real zeros. By using the properties of Riordan matrices we address combinatorial properties and interpretations of our Sheffer sequence of polynomials and their coefficients. We also show that apart from two exceptional zeros, the zeros of polynomials with large enough degree in such a Sheffer sequence lie on the line $x=1/2+it$.

Zeros of a binomial combination of Chebyshev polynomials

For $0<α<1$, we study the zeros of the sequence of polynomials $\left\{ P_{m}(z)\right\} _{m=0}^{\infty}$ generated by the reciprocal of $(1-t)^α(1-2zt+t^{2})$, expanded as a power series in $t$. Equivalently, this sequence is obtained from a linear combination of Chebyshev polynomials whose coefficients have a binomial form. We show that the number of zeros of $P_{m}(z)$ outside the interval $(-1,1)$ is bounded by a constant independent of $m$.

Connections between discriminants and the root distribution of polynomials with rational generating function

Let $H_{m}(z)$ be a sequence of polynomials whose generating function $\sum_{m=0}^{\infty}H_{m}(z)t^{m}$ is the reciprocal of a bivariate polynomial $D(t,z)$. We show that in the three cases $D(t,z)=1+B(z)t+A(z)t^{2}$, $D(t,z)=1+B(z)t+A(z)t^{3}$ and $D(t,z)=1+B(z)t+A(z)t^{4}$, where $A(z)$ and $B(z)$ are any polynomials in $z$ with complex coefficients, the roots of $H_{m}(z)$ lie on a portion of a real algebraic curve whose equation is explicitly given. The proofs involve the $q$-analogue of the discriminant, a concept introduced by Mourad Ismail.

On the zeros of polynomials generated by rational functions with a hyperbolic polynomial type denominator

This paper investigates the location of the zeros of a sequence of polynomials generated by a rational function with a denominator of the form $G(z,t)=P(t)+zt^{r}$, where the zeros of $P$ are positive and real. We show that every member of a family of such generating functions - parametrized by the degree of $P$ and $r$ - gives rise to a sequence of polynomials $\{H_{m}(z)\}_{m=0}^{\infty}$ that is eventually hyperbolic. Moreover, when $P(0)>0$ the real zeros of the polynomials $H_{m}(z)$ form a dense subset of an interval $I\subset\mathbb{R}^{+}$, whose length depends on the particular values of the parameters in the generating function.

Pair correlation of roots of rational functions with rational generating functions and quadratic denominators

For any rational functions with complex coefficients $A(z), B(z)$ and $C(z)$, where $A(z)$, $C(z)$ are not identically zero, we consider the sequence of rational functions $H_{m}(z)$ with generating function $\sum H_{m}(z)t^{m}=1/(A(z)t^{2}+B(z)t+C(z))$. We provide an explicit formula for the limiting pair correlation function of the roots of $\prod_{m=0}^{n}H_{m}(z)$, as $n\rightarrow\infty$, counting multiplicities, on certain closed subarcs $J$ of a curve $\mathcal{C}$ where the roots lie. We give an example where the limiting pair correlation function does not exist if $J$ contains the endpoints of $\mathcal{C}$.

Polynomials with rational generating functions and real zeros

This paper investigates the location of the zeros of a sequence of polynomials generated by a rational function with a binomial-type denominator. We show that every member of a two-parameter family consisting of such generating functions gives rise to a sequence of polynomials $\{P_{m}(z)\}_{m=0}^{\infty}$ that is eventually hyperbolic. Moreover, the real zeros of the polynomials $P_{m}(z)$ form a dense subset of an interval $I\subset\mathbb{R}^{+}$, whose length depends on the particular values of the parameters in the generating function.

The root distribution of polynomials with a three-term recurrence

For any fixed positive integer $n$, we study the root distribution of a sequence of polynomials $H_{m}(z)$ satisfying the rational generating function \[ \sum_{m=0}^{\infty}H_{m}(z)t^{m}=\frac{1}{1+B(z)t+A(z)t^{n}} \] where $A(z)$ and $B(z)$ are any polynomials in $z$ with complex coefficients. We show that the roots of $H_{m}(z)$ which satisfy $A(z)\ne0$ lie on a specific fixed real algebraic curve for all large $m$.
