Supercritical discrete restriction estimates for forms in many variables

We prove discrete restriction estimates for a broad class of hypersurfaces and varieties of intermediate codimension. For our result about hypersurfaces, we use Bourgain's arithmetic version of the Tomas--Stein method and Magyar's decomposition of Birch's hypersurfaces. For our result about varieties of higher codimension, we use the even moment method and works of Birch and Schmidt.

Discrete restriction estimates of epsilon-removal type for kth-powers and k-paraboloids

We obtain restriction estimates of $ε$-removal type for the set of $k$-th powers of integers, and for discrete $d$-dimensional surfaces of the form \[ \{ (n_1,\dots,n_d,n_1^k + \dotsb + n_d^k) \,:\, |n_1|,\dots,|n_d| \leq N \}, \] which we term '$k$-paraboloids'. For these surfaces, we obtain a satisfying range of exponents for large values of $d,k$. We also obtain estimates of $ε$-removal type in the full supercritical range for $k$-th powers and for $k$-paraboloids of dimension $d < k(k-2)$. We rely on a variety of techniques in discrete harmonic analysis originating in Bourgain's works on the restriction theory of the squares and the discrete parabola.

The discrete spherical averages over a family of sparse sequences

We initiate the study of the $\ell^p(\mathbb{Z}^d)$-boundedness of the arithmetic spherical maximal function over sparse sequences. We state a folklore conjecture for lacunary sequences, a key example of Zienkiewicz and prove new bounds for a family of sparse sequences that achieves the endpoint of the Magyar--Stein--Wainger theorem for the full discrete spherical maximal function. Perhaps our most interesting result is the boundedness of a discrete spherical maximal function in $\mathbb{Z}^4$ over an infinite, albeit sparse, set of radii. Our methods include the Kloosterman refinement for the Fourier transform of the spherical measure (introduced by Magyar) and Weil bounds for Kloosterman sums which are utilized by a new further decomposition of spherical measure.

Restricted weak-type endpoint estimates for discrete k-spherical maximal functions

In this paper, we use the Approximation Formula for the Fourier transform of the solution set of lattice points on k-spheres and methods of Bourgain and Ionescu to refine the l^p(Z^d)-boundedness results for discrete k- spherical maximal functions to a restricted weak-type result at the endpoint. Moreover we introduce a novel Approximation Formula for a single average; this allows us to improve our bounds for discrete k-spherical maximal functions along sparse subsequences of radii by exploiting recent progress of Wooley on the Vinogradov mean value conjectures. In particular we have improved bounds for lacunary discrete k-spherical maximal functions when k>2. We introduce a density-parameter, which may be viewed as a discrete version of Minkowski dimension used in related works on the conitnuous phenomena, to prove our results for sparse averages.

The Maximal Function and Square Function Control the Variation: An Elementary Proof

In this note we prove the following good-$λ$ inequality, for $r>2$, all $λ> 0$, $δ\in \big(0, \frac{1}{2} \big)$ \[ ν\big\{ V_r(f) > 3 λ; \mathcal{M}(f) \leq δλ\big\} \leq 4 ν\{s(f) > δλ\} + {δ^2 \left(1+\frac{16}{r-2}\right)^2} \cdot ν\big\{ V_r(f) > λ\big\}, \] where $\mathcal{M}(f)$ is the martingale maximal function, $s(f)$ is the conditional martingale square function. This immediately proves that $V_r(f)$ is bounded on $L^p$, $1 < p <\infty$ and moreover is integrable when the maximal function is.

On a discrete version of Tanaka's theorem for maximal functions

In this paper we prove a discrete version of Tanaka's Theorem \cite{Ta} for the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator in dimension $n=1$, both in the non-centered and centered cases. For the discrete non-centered maximal operator $\widetilde{M} $ we prove that, given a function $f: \mathbb{Z} \to \mathbb{R}$ of bounded variation, $$\textrm{Var}(\widetilde{M} f) \leq \textrm{Var}(f),$$ where $\textrm{Var}(f)$ represents the total variation of $f$. For the discrete centered maximal operator $M$ we prove that, given a function $f: \mathbb{Z} \to \mathbb{R}$ such that $f \in \ell^1(\mathbb{Z})$, $$\textrm{Var}(Mf) \leq C \|f\|_{\ell^1(\mathbb{Z})}.$$ This provides a positive solution to a question of Hajłasz and Onninen \cite{HO} in the discrete one-dimensional case.

On the endpoint regularity of discrete maximal operators

Given a discrete function $f:\Z^d \to \R$ we consider the maximal operator $$Mf(\vec{n}) = \sup_{r\geq0} \frac{1}{N(r)} \sum_{\vec{m} \in \barΩ_r} \big|f(\vec{n} + \vec{m})\big|,$$ where $\big\{\barΩ_r\big\}_{r \geq 0}$ are dilations of a convex set $Ω$ (open, bounded and with Lipschitz boudary) containing the origin and $N(r)$ is the number of lattice points inside $\barΩ_r$. We prove here that the operator $f \mapsto \nabla M f$ is bounded and continuous from $l^1(\Z^d)$ to $l^1(\Z^d)$. We also prove the same result for the non-centered version of this discrete maximal operator.

Problems and Results related to Waring's problem: Maximal functions and ergodic averages

We study the arithmetic analogue of maximal functions on diagonal hypersurfaces. This paper is a natural step following the papers of \cite{Magyar_dyadic}, \cite{Magyar_ergodic} and \cite{MSW}. We combine more precise knowledge of oscillatory integrals and exponential sums to generalize the asymptotic formula in Waring's problem to an approximation formula for the fourier transform of the solution set of lattice points on hypersurfaces arising in Waring's problem and apply this result to arithmetic maximal functions and ergodic averages. In sufficiently large dimensions, the approximation formula, $\ell^2$-maximal theorems and ergodic theorems were previously known. Our contribution is in reducing the dimensional constraint in the approximation formula using recent bounds of Wooley, and improving the range of $\ell^p$ spaces in the maximal and ergodic theorems. We also conjecture the expected range of spaces.
