On Montgomery's pair correlation conjecture: a tale of three integrals

We study three integrals related to the celebrated pair correlation conjecture of H. L. Montgomery. The first is the integral of Montgomery's function $F(α, T)$ in bounded intervals, the second is an integral introduced by Selberg related to estimating the variance of primes in short intervals, and the last is the second moment of the logarithmic derivative of the Riemann zeta-function near the critical line. The conjectured asymptotic for any of these three integrals is equivalent to Montgomery's pair correlation conjecture. Assuming the Riemann hypothesis, we substantially improve the known upper and lower bounds for these integrals by introducing new connections to certain extremal problems in Fourier analysis. In an appendix, we study the intriguing problem of establishing the sharp form of an embedding between two Hilbert spaces of entire functions naturally connected to Montgomery's pair correlation conjecture.

Sunrise strategy for the continuity of maximal operators

In this paper we address the $W^{1,1}$-continuity of several maximal operators at the gradient level. A key idea in our global strategy is the decomposition of a maximal operator, with the absence of strict local maxima in the disconnecting set, into "lateral" maximal operators with good monotonicity and convergence properties. This construction is inspired in the classical sunrise lemma in harmonic analysis. A model case for our sunrise strategy considers the uncentered Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator $\widetilde{M}$ acting on $W^{1,1}_{\rm rad}(\mathbb{R}^d)$, the subspace of $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ consisting of radial functions. In dimension $d\geq 2$ it was recently established by H. Luiro that the map $f \mapsto \nabla \widetilde{M} f$ is bounded from $W^{1,1}_{\rm rad}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ to $L^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$, and we show that such map is also continuous. Further applications of the sunrise strategy in connection with the $W^{1,1}$-continuity problem include non-tangential maximal operators on $\mathbb{R}^d$ acting on radial functions when $d\geq 2$ and general functions when $d=1$, and the uncentered Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$ acting on polar functions when $d\geq 2$ and general functions when $d=1$.

Regularity of maximal operators: recent progress and some open problems

This is an expository paper on the regularity theory of maximal operators, when these act on Sobolev and BV functions, with a special focus on some of the current open problems in the topic. Overall, a list of fifteen research problems is presented. It summarizes the contents of a talk delivered by the author at the CIMPA 2017 Research School - Harmonic Analysis, Geometric Measure Theory and Applications, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Extremal functions in de Branges and Euclidean spaces

In this work we obtain optimal majorants and minorants of exponential type for a wide class of radial functions on $\mathbb{R}^N$. These extremal functions minimize the $L^1(\mathbb{R}^N, |x|^{2ν+ 2 - N}dx)$-distance to the original function, where $ν>-1$ is a free parameter. To achieve this result we develop new interpolation tools to solve an associated extremal problem for the exponential function $\mathcal{F}_λ(x) = e^{-λ|x|}$, where $λ>0$, in the general framework of de Branges spaces of entire functions. We then specialize the construction to a particular family of homogeneous de Branges spaces to approach the multidimensional Euclidean case. Finally, we extend the result from the exponential function to a class of subordinated radial functions via integration on the parameter $λ>0$ against suitable measures. Applications of the results presented here include multidimensional versions of Hilbert-type inequalities, extremal one-sided approximations by trigonometric polynomials for a class of even periodic functions and extremal one-sided approximations by polynomials for a class of functions on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^{N-1}$ with an axis of symmetry.

On a discrete version of Tanaka's theorem for maximal functions

In this paper we prove a discrete version of Tanaka's Theorem \cite{Ta} for the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator in dimension $n=1$, both in the non-centered and centered cases. For the discrete non-centered maximal operator $\widetilde{M} $ we prove that, given a function $f: \mathbb{Z} \to \mathbb{R}$ of bounded variation, $$\textrm{Var}(\widetilde{M} f) \leq \textrm{Var}(f),$$ where $\textrm{Var}(f)$ represents the total variation of $f$. For the discrete centered maximal operator $M$ we prove that, given a function $f: \mathbb{Z} \to \mathbb{R}$ such that $f \in \ell^1(\mathbb{Z})$, $$\textrm{Var}(Mf) \leq C \|f\|_{\ell^1(\mathbb{Z})}.$$ This provides a positive solution to a question of Hajłasz and Onninen \cite{HO} in the discrete one-dimensional case.

Bounding $S(t)$ and $S_1(t)$ on the Riemann hypothesis

Let $πS(t)$ denote the argument of the Riemann zeta-function, $ζ(s)$, at the point $s=\frac{1}{2}+it$. Assuming the Riemann hypothesis, we present two proofs of the bound $$ |S(t)| \leq \left(\tfrac{1}{4} + o(1) \right)\tfrac{\log t}{\log \log t} $$ for large $t$. This improves a result of Goldston and Gonek by a factor of 2. The first method consists in bounding the auxiliary function $S_1(t) = \int_0^{t} S(u) du$ using extremal functions constructed by Carneiro, Littmann and Vaaler. We then relate the size of $S(t)$ to the size of the functions $S_1(t\pm h)-S_1(t)$ when $h\asymp 1/\log\log t$. The alternative approach bounds $S(t)$ directly, relying on the solution of the Beurling-Selberg extremal problem for the odd function $f(x) = \arctan\left(\tfrac{1}{x}\right) - \tfrac{x}{1 + x^2}$. This draws upon recent work by Carneiro and Littmann.

On the endpoint regularity of discrete maximal operators

Given a discrete function $f:\Z^d \to \R$ we consider the maximal operator $$Mf(\vec{n}) = \sup_{r\geq0} \frac{1}{N(r)} \sum_{\vec{m} \in \barΩ_r} \big|f(\vec{n} + \vec{m})\big|,$$ where $\big\{\barΩ_r\big\}_{r \geq 0}$ are dilations of a convex set $Ω$ (open, bounded and with Lipschitz boudary) containing the origin and $N(r)$ is the number of lattice points inside $\barΩ_r$. We prove here that the operator $f \mapsto \nabla M f$ is bounded and continuous from $l^1(\Z^d)$ to $l^1(\Z^d)$. We also prove the same result for the non-centered version of this discrete maximal operator.

On the variation of maximal operators of convolution type

In this paper we study the regularity properties of two maximal operators of convolution type: the heat flow maximal operator (associated to the Gauss kernel) and the Poisson maximal operator (associated to the Poisson kernel). In dimension $d=1$ we prove that these maximal operators do not increase the $L^p$-variation of a function for any $p \geq 1$, while in dimensions $d>1$ we obtain the corresponding results for the $L^2$-variation. Similar results are proved for the discrete versions of these operators.

Estimates for the Boltzmann collision operator via radial symmetry and Fourier transform

We extend the $L^p$-theory of the Boltzmann collision operator by using classical techniques based in the Carleman representation and Fourier analysis, allied to new ideas that exploit the radial symmetry of this operator. We are then able to greatly simplify existent technical proofs in this theory, extend the range, and obtain explicit sharp constants in some convolution-like inequalities for the gain part of the Boltzmann collision operator.

A sharp inequality for the Strichartz norm

Let $u:\R \times \R^n \to \C$ be the solution of the linear Schrödinger equation $iu_t + Δu =0$ with initial data $u(0,x) = f(x)$. In the first part of this paper we obtain a sharp inequality for the Strichartz norm $\|u(t,x)\|_{L^{2k}_tL^{2k}_x(\R \times\R^n)}$, where $k\in \Z$, $k \geq 2$ and $(n,k) \neq (1,2)$, that admits only Gaussian maximizers. As corollaries we obtain sharp forms of the classical Strichartz inequalities in low dimensions (works of Foschi and Hundertmark - Zharnitsky) and also sharp forms of some Sobolev-Strichartz inequalities. In the second part of the paper we express Foschi's sharp inequalities for the Schrödinger and wave equations in the broader setting of sharp restriction/extension estimates for the paraboloid and the cone.

On the regularity of maximal operators

We study the regularity of the bilinear maximal operator when applied to Sobolev functions, proving that it maps $W^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}) \times W^{1,q}(\mathbb{R}) \to W^{1,r}(\mathbb{R})$ with $1 <p,q < \infty$ and $r\geq 1$, boundedly and continuously. The same result holds on $\mathbb{R}^n$ when $r>1$. We also investigate the almost everywhere and weak convergence under the action of the classical Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator, both in its global and local versions.

Sharp approximations to the Bernoulli periodic functions by trigonometric polynomials

We obtain optimal trigonometric polynomials of a given degree $N$ that majorize, minorize and approximate in $L^1(\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})$ the Bernoulli periodic functions. These are the periodic analogues of two works of F. Littmann that generalize a paper of J. Vaaler. As applications we provide the corresponding Erdös-Turán-type inequalities, approximations to other periodic functions and bounds for certain Hermitian forms.

Some extremal functions in Fourier analysis, II

We obtain extremal majorants and minorants of exponential type for a class of even functions on $\R$ which includes $\log |x|$ and $|x|^α$, where $-1 < α< 1$. We also give periodic versions of these results in which the majorants and minorants are trigonometric polynomials of bounded degree. As applications we obtain optimal estimates for certain Hermitian forms, which include discrete analogues of the one dimensional Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequalities. A further application provides an Erdös-Turán-type inequality that estimates the sup norm of algebraic polynomials on the unit disc in terms of power sums in the roots of the polynomials.
