Probing the EVH limit of supersymmetric AdS black holes

Extremal black holes in general dimensions are well known to contain an AdS$_2$ factor in their near-horizon geometries. If the extremal limit is taken in conjunction with a specific vanishing horizon limit, the so-called Extremal Vanishing Horizon (EVH) limit, the AdS$_2$ factor lifts to a locally AdS$_3$ factor with a pinching angular direction. In this paper, we study the EVH limit of asymptotically AdS black holes which preserve some supersymmetry. The primary example we consider is the 1/16$^{\rm th}$ BPS asymptotically AdS$_5$ black hole, whose EVH limit has an AdS$_3$ factor in its near-horizon geometry. We also consider the near-EVH limit of this black hole, in which the near-horizon geometry instead contains an extremal BTZ factor. We employ recent results on the large-$N$ limit of the superconformal index of the dual CFT$_4$ to understand the emergence of a CFT$_2$ in the IR of the CFT$_4$, which is the field theory dual to the emergence of the locally AdS$_3$ factor in the near-horizon geometry. In particular, we show that the inverse Laplace transform of the superconformal index, yielding the black hole entropy, becomes equivalent to the derivation of a Cardy formula for the dual CFT$_2$. Finally, we examine the EVH limit of supersymmetric black holes in other dimensions.

The Hot Attractor Mechanism: Decoupling Without Deep Throats

Non-extremal black holes in $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity have two horizons, the geometric mean of whose areas recovers the horizon area of the extremal black hole obtained from taking a smooth zero temperature limit. In prior work (arxiv:1410.3478), using the attractor mechanism, we deduced the existence of several moduli independent invariant quantities obtained from averaging over a decoupled inter-horizon region. We establish that non-extremal geometries at the Reissner--Nordström point, where the scalar moduli are held fixed, can be lifted to solutions in supergravity with a near-horizon AdS$_3\times$S$^2$. These solutions have the same entropy and temperature as the original black hole and therefore allow an interpretation of the underlying gravitational degrees of freedom in terms of CFT$_2$. Symmetries of the moduli space enable us to explicate the origin of entropy in the extremal limit.

Hot Attractors

The product of the areas of the event horizon and the Cauchy horizon of a non-extremal black hole equals the square of the area of the horizon of the black hole obtained from taking the smooth extremal limit. We establish this result for a large class of black holes using the second order equations of motion, black hole thermodynamics, and the attractor mechanism for extremal black holes. This happens even though the area of each horizon generically depends on the moduli, which are asymptotic values of scalar fields. The conformal field theory dual to the BTZ black hole facilitates a microscopic interpretation of the result. In addition, we demonstrate that certain quantities which vanish in the extremal case are zero when integrated over the region between the two horizons. We corroborate these conclusions through an analysis of known solutions.

Heating up branes in gauged supergravity

In this note, we explore the solution space of non-extremal black objects in $4D$ and $5D$ ${\cal N}=2$ gauged supergravity in the presence of fluxes. We present first order rewritings of the $4D$ action for a classes of non-extremal dyonic and electric solutions with electric flux backgrounds. Additionally, we obtain the non-extremal version of the Nernst brane in $AdS_5$ using a simple deformation. Finally, we develop a new technique to deform extremal black solutions in $4D$ to non-extremal solutions by an analysis of the symmetries of the equations of motion.

Tension of Confining Strings at Low Temperature

In the low temperature confining phase of QCD or QCD-like theories it is challenging to capture the temperature dependence of observables through AdS/CFT. Using the blackfold approach we compute the quark-antiquark linear static potential in the low temperature confining phase, taking into account the thermal excitations of the string. We find the explicit temperature dependence of the string tension and notice that, as naturally expected, tension decreases as temperature increases. We have also generalized the blackfold approach for the computation of the Wilson loops, making it directly applicable to a large class of backgrounds.

On anharmonic stabilisation equations for black holes

We investigate the stabilisation equations for sufficiently general, yet regular, extremal (supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric) and non-extremal black holes in four-dimensional N=2 supergravity using both the H-FGK approach and a generalisation of Denef's formalism. By an explicit calculation we demonstrate that the equations necessarily contain an anharmonic part, even in the static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat case.

First-order flows and stabilisation equations for non-BPS extremal black holes

We derive a generalised form of flow equations for extremal static and rotating non-BPS black holes in four-dimensional ungauged N = 2 supergravity coupled to vector multiplets. For particular charge vectors, we give stabilisation equations for the scalars, analogous to the BPS case, describing full known solutions. Based on this, we propose a generic ansatz for the stabilisation equations, which surprisingly includes ratios of harmonic functions.

Holography of Charged Dilaton Black Holes

We study charged dilaton black branes in $AdS_4$. Our system involves a dilaton $ϕ$ coupled to a Maxwell field $F_{μν}$ with dilaton-dependent gauge coupling, ${1\over g^2} = f^2(ϕ)$. First, we find the solutions for extremal and near extremal branes through a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. The near horizon geometries in the simplest cases, where $f(ϕ) = e^{αϕ}$, are Lifshitz-like, with a dynamical exponent $z$ determined by $α$. The black hole thermodynamics varies in an interesting way with $α$, but in all cases the entropy is vanishing and the specific heat is positive for the near extremal solutions. We then compute conductivity in these backgrounds. We find that somewhat surprisingly, the AC conductivity vanishes like $ω^2$ at T=0 independent of $α$. We also explore the charged black brane physics of several other classes of gauge-coupling functions $f(ϕ)$. In addition to possible applications in AdS/CMT, the extremal black branes are of interest from the point of view of the attractor mechanism. The near horizon geometries for these branes are universal, independent of the asymptotic values of the moduli, and describe generic classes of endpoints for attractor flows which are different from $AdS_2\times R^2$.

Holography of Dyonic Dilaton Black Branes

We study black branes carrying both electric and magnetic charges in Einstein-Maxwell theory coupled to a dilaton-axion in asymptotically anti de Sitter space. After reviewing and extending earlier results for the case of electrically charged branes, we characterise the thermodynamics of magnetically charged branes. We then focus on dyonic branes in theories which enjoy an $SL(2,R)$ electric-magnetic duality. Using $SL(2,R)$, we are able to generate solutions with arbitrary charges starting with the electrically charged solution, and also calculate transport coefficients. These solutions all exhibit a Lifshitz-like near-horizon geometry. The system behaves as expected for a charged fluid in a magnetic field, with non-vanishing Hall conductance and vanishing DC longitudinal conductivity at low temperatures. Its response is characterised by a cyclotron resonance at a frequency proportional to the magnetic field, for small magnetic fields. Interestingly, the DC Hall conductance is related to the attractor value of the axion. We also study the attractor flows of the dilaton-axion, both in cases with and without an additional modular-invariant scalar potential. The flows exhibit intricate behaviour related to the duality symmetry. Finally, we briefly discuss attractor flows in more general dilaton-axion theories which do not enjoy $SL(2,R)$ symmetry.

Rotating Attractors

We prove that, in a general higher derivative theory of gravity coupled to abelian gauge fields and neutral scalar fields, the entropy and the near horizon background of a rotating extremal black hole is obtained by extremizing an entropy function which depends only on the parameters labeling the near horizon background and the electric and magnetic charges and angular momentum carried by the black hole. If the entropy function has a unique extremum then this extremum must be independent of the asymptotic values of the moduli scalar fields and the solution exhibits attractor behaviour. If the entropy function has flat directions then the near horizon background is not uniquely determined by the extremization equations and could depend on the asymptotic data on the moduli fields, but the value of the entropy is still independent of this asymptotic data. We illustrate these results in the context of two derivative theories of gravity in several examples. These include Kerr black hole, Kerr-Newman black hole, black holes in Kaluza-Klein theory, and black holes in toroidally compactified heterotic string theory.

A note on alpha-vacua and interacting field theory in de Sitter space

We set up a consistent renormalizable perturbation theory of a scalar field in a nontrivial alpha vacuum in de Sitter space. Although one representation of the effective action involves non-local interactions between anti-podal points, we show the theory leads to causal physics, and we prove a spectral theorem for the interacting two-point function. We construct the renormalized stress energy tensor and show this develops no imaginary part at leading order in the interactions, consistent with stability.

Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays and de Sitter Vacua

The production of ultra high-energy cosmic rays in de Sitter invariant vacuum states is considered. Assuming the present-day universe is asymptoting toward a future de Sitter phase, we argue the observed flux of cosmic rays places a bound on the parameter $α$ that characterizes these de Sitter invariant vacuum states, generalizing earlier work of Starobinsky and Tkachev. If this bound is saturated, we obtain a new top-down scenario for the production of super-GZK cosmic rays. The observable predictions bear many similarities to the previously studied scenario where super-GZK events are produced by decay of galactic halo super-heavy dark matter particles.
