Interplay of charge density waves, disorder, and superconductivity in 2$H$-TaSe$_2$ elucidated by NMR

Single crystals of pristine and 6% Pd-intercalated 2H-TaSe$_2$ have been studied by means of $^{77}$Se nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The temperature dependence of the $^{77}$Se spectrum, with an unexpected line narrowing upon Pd intercalation, unravels the presence of correlated local lattice distortions far above the transition temperature of the charge density wave (CDW) order, thereby supporting a strong-coupling CDW mechanism in 2H-TaSe$_2$. While, the Knight shift data suggest that the incommensurate CDW transition involves a partial Fermi surface gap opening. As for spin dynamics, the $^{77}$Se spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ as a function of temperature shows that a pseudogap behavior dominates the low-energy spin excitations even within the CDW phase, and gets stronger along with superconductivity in the Pd-6% sample. We discuss that CDW fluctuations may be responsible for the pseudogap as well as superconductivity, although the two phenomena are unlikely to be directly linked each other.

Pressure-dependent structure of BaZrO$_3$ crystals as determined by Raman Spectroscopy

The structure of dielectric perovskite BaZrO$_3$, long known to be cubic at room temperature without any structural phase transition with variation of temperature, has been recently disputed to have different ground state structures with lower symmetries involving octahedra rotation. The pressure-dependent Raman scattering measurements can identify the hierarchy of energetically-adjacent polymorphs, helping in turn understand its ground state structure at atmospheric pressure. Here, Raman scattering spectra of high-quality BaZrO$_3$ single crystals grown by the optical floating zone method are investigated in a pressure range from 1 atm to 42 GPa. First, based on the analyses of the infrared and Raman spectra measured at the atmosphere, it is found that all observed vibrational modes can be assigned according to the cubic $Pm\bar{3}m$ structure. In addition, by applying pressure, two structural phase transitions are found at 8.4 and 19.2 GPa, one from the cubic to the rhombohedral $R\bar{3}c$ phase and the other from the rhombohedral to the tetragonal $I4/mcm$ phase. Based on the two pressure-induced structural phase transitions, the true ground state structure of BaZrO$_3$ at room temperature and ambient pressure is corroborated to be cubic while the rhombohedral phase is the closest second.

Interplay of charge density wave and multiband superconductivity in 2$H$-Pd$_x$TaSe$_2$

2$H$-TaSe$_2$ has been one of unique transition metal dichalcogenides exhibiting several phase transitions due to a delicate balance among competing electronic ground states. An unusual metallic state at high-$T$ is sequentially followed by an incommensurate charge density wave (ICDW) state at $\approx$ 122 K and a commensurate charge density wave (CCDW) state at $\approx$ 90 K, and superconductivity at $T_{\rm{C}}\sim$0.14 K. Upon systematic intercalation of Pd ions into TaSe$_2$, we find that CCDW order is destabilized more rapidly than ICDW to indicate a hidden quantum phase transition point at $x$$\sim$0.09-0.10. Moreover, $T_{\rm{C}}$ shows a dramatic enhancement up to 3.3 K at $x$ = 0.08, $\sim$24 times of $T_{\rm{C}}$ in 2$H$-TaSe$_2$, in proportional to the density of states $N(E_F)$. Investigations of upper critical fields $H_{c2}$ in single crystals reveal evidences of multiband superconductivity as temperature-dependent anisotropy factor $γ_H$ = $H_{c2}^{ab}$/$H_{c2}^{c}$, quasi-linear increase of $H_{c2}^{c}(T)$, and an upward, positive-curvature in $H_{c2}^{ab}(T)$ near $T_{\rm{C}}$. Furthermore, analysis of temperature-dependent electronic specific heat corroborates the presence of multiple superconducting gaps. Based on above findings and electronic phase diagram vs $x$, we propose that the increase of $N(E_F)$ and effective electron-phonon coupling in the vicinity of CDW quantum phase transition should be a key to the large enhancement of $T_{\rm{C}}$ in Pd$_x$TaSe$_2$.

Observation of magnetoelectric effects in a S=1/2 frustrated spin chain magnet SrCuTe2O6

The magnetoelectric (ME) effects are investigated in a cubic compound SrCuTe2O6, in which uniform Cu2+ (S=1/2) spin chains with considerable spin frustration exhibit a concomitant antiferromagnetic transition and dielectric constant peak at TN=5.5 K. Pyroelectric Jp(T) and magnetoelectric current JME(H) measurements in the presence of a bias electric field are used to reveal that SrCuTe2O6 shows clear variations of Jp(T) across TN at constant magnetic fields. Furthermore, isothermal measurements of JME(H) also develop clear peaks at finite magnetic fields, of which traces are consistent with the spin-flop transitions observed in the magnetization studies. As a result, the anomalies observed in Jp(T) and JME(H) curves well match with the field-temperature phase diagram constructed from magnetization and dielectric constant measurements, demonstrating that SrCuTe2O6 is a new magnetoelectric compound with S=1/2 spin chains.

Observation of S = 1/2 quasi-one-dimensional magnetic and magneto-dielectric behavior in a cubic SrCuTe2O6

We investigate magnetic, thermal, and dielectric properties of SrCuTe2O6, which is isostructural to PbCuTe2O6, a recently found, Cu-based 3D frustrated magnet with a corner sharing triangular spin network having dominant first and second nearest neighbor (nn) couplings [B. Koteswararao, et al. Phys. Rev. B 90, 035141 (2014)]. Although SrCuTe2O6 has a structurally similar spin network, but the magnetic data exhibit the characteristic features of a typical quasi -one-dimensional magnet, which mainly resulted from the magnetically dominant third nn coupling, uniform chains. The magnetic properties of this system are studied via magnetization (M), heat capacity (Cp), dielectric constant, measurements along with ab-initio band structure calculations. Magnetic susceptibility chi(T) data show a broad maximum at 32 K and the system orders at low temperatures TN1=5.5 K and TN2=4.5 K, respectively. The analysis of chi(T) data gives an intra-chain coupling, J3/kB, to be about - 42 K with non-negligible frustrated inter-chain couplings (J1/kB and J2/kB). The hopping parameters obtained from LDA band structure calculations also suggest the presence of coupled uniform chains. The observation of simultaneous anomalies in dielectric constant at TN1 and TN2 suggests the presence of magneto-dielectric effect in SrCuTe2O6. A magnetic phase diagram is also built based on M, C p, and dielectric constant results.

X-ray scattering study of pyrochlore iridates: crystal structure, electronic and magnetic excitations

We have investigated the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the pyrochlore iridates Eu2Ir2O7 and Pr2Ir2O7 using a combination of resonant elastic x-ray scattering, x-ray powder diffraction, and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The structural parameters of Eu2Ir2O7 have been examined as a function of temperature and applied pressure, with a particular emphasis on regions of the phase diagram where electronic and magnetic phase transitions have been reported. We find no evidence of crystal symmetry change over the range of temperatures (~6 to 300 K) and pressures (~0.1 to 17 GPa) studied. We have also investigated the electronic and magnetic excitations in single crystal samples of Eu2Ir2O7 and Pr2Ir2O7 using high resolution Ir L3-edge RIXS. In spite of very different ground state properties, we find these materials exhibit qualitatively similar excitation spectra, with crystal field excitations at ~3-5 eV, spin-orbit excitations at ~0.5-1 eV, and broad low-lying excitations below ~0.15 eV. In Eu2Ir2O7 we observe highly damped magnetic excitations at ~45 meV, which display significant momentum dependence. We compare these results with recent dynamical structure factor calculations.

Diluted magnetism in Mn doped SrZnO2 single crystals

We have investigated the magnetic properties of Mn and Cu substituted SrZnO2 single crystals (SrZn0.99Mn0.01O2 and SrZn0.99Cu0.01O2). We observed signatures of weak ferromagnetism as a sharp increase of magnetic susceptibility below 5 K even in the low percentage (x= 0.01) of Mn substituted single crystals. Magnetic susceptibility data measured parallel or perpendicular to the ab plane yield anisotropic behavior with Curie Weiss temperature of about -320 K and -410 K, respectively, suggesting the presence of strong antiferromagnetic couplings among Mn atoms at high temperatures, similar to the Mn doped ZnO and Fe doped BaTiO3 samples. In contrast, the SrZn0.99Cu0.01O2 crystal shows paramagnetic behavior down to 2 K.

Electrical control of large magnetization reversal in a helimagnet

In spite of both technical and fundamental importance, reversal of a macroscopic magnetization by an electric field (E) has been limitedly realized and remains as one of great challenges. Here, we report the realization of modulation and reversal of large magnetization (M) by E in a multiferroic crystal Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2(Fe0.92Al0.08)12O22, in which a transverse conical spin state exhibits a remanent M and electric polarization below ~150 K. Upon sweeping E between +- 2 MV/m, M is quasi-linearly varied between +- 2 μB/f.u., resulting in the M reversal. Moreover, the remanent M shows non-volatile changes of ΔM = +- 0.15 μB/f.u., depending on the history of the applied electric fields. The large modulation and the non-volatile two-states of M at zero magnetic field are observable up to ~150 K where the transverse conical spin state is stabilized. Nuclear magnetic resonance measurements provide microscopic evidences that the electric field and the magnetic field play an equivalent role, rendering the volume of magnetic domains change accompanied by the domain wall motion. The present findings point to a new pathway for realizing the large magnetization reversal by electric fields at fairly high temperatures.

Magnetic properties and heat capacity of the three-dimensional frustrated S=1/2 antiferromagnet PbCuTe2O6

We report magnetic susceptibility (chi) and heat capacity Cp measurements along with ab-initio electronic structure calculations on PbCuTe2O6, a compound made up of a three dimensional 3D network of corner-shared triangular units. The presence of antiferromagnetic interactions is inferred from a Curie-Weiss temperature (theta_CW) of about -22 K from the chi(T) data. The magnetic heat capacity (Cm) data show a broad maximum at T^max ~ 1.15 K (i.e. T^max/theta_CW ~ 0.05), which is analogous to the the observed broad maximum in the Cm/T data of a hyper-Kagome system, Na4Ir3O8. In addition, Cm data exhibit a weak kink at T^* ~ 0.87 K. While the T^max is nearly unchanged, the T^* is systematically suppressed in an increasing magnetic field (H) up to 80 kOe. For H > 80 kOe, the Cm data at low temperatures exhibit a characteristic power-law (T^α) behavior with an exponent α slightly less than 2. Hopping integrals obtained from the electronic structure calculations show the presence of strongly frustrated 3D spin interactions along with non-negligible unfrustrated couplings. Our results suggest that PbCuTe2O6 is a candidate material for realizing a 3D quantum spin liquid state at high magnetic fields.

Enhanced Upper Critical Fields in a New Quasi-one-dimensional Superconductor Nb2PdxSe5

We report a discovery of superconductivity with Tc = 5.5 K in Nb2PdxSe5, in which one-dimensional (1D) Nb-Se chains existing along the b-direction hybridize each other to form the conducting b-c* plane. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat data in both single- and poly-crystals show evidence of bulk superconductivity. The resistivity, Hall coefficient, and magneto-resistance data all indicate the presence of an energy scale T* = ~ 50 K, which becomes systematically lowered under hydrostatic pressure and competes with the stabilization of superconductivity. Combined with the band calculation results showing the Fermi surfaces with 1D character, we postulate that the energy scale T* is related to a formation of a density wave or a stabilization of low dimensional electronic structure. The zero temperature upper critical field, Hc2(0), of the single crystal is found to be 10.5, 35 and 22 T in the a', b and c*-directions, respectively. While the linearly increasing Hc2(T) for H // c* indicates the multi-band effect, Hc2(0) for H // b and c* are found to be much bigger than the BCS Pauli limiting field, 1.84 Tc ~ 9 T. The suppressed Pauli paramagnetic effect points to a possibility of the enhanced spin-orbit scattering related to the low dimensional electronic structure or the presence of heavy elements such as Pd.

PbCu3TeO7: An S=1/2 staircase Kagome lattice with significant intra- and inter-plane couplings

We have synthesized polycrystalline and single crystal samples of PbCu3TeO7 and studied its properties via magnetic susceptibility chi(T) and heat-capacity Cp(T) measurements and also electronic structure calculations. Whereas the crystal structure is suggestive of the presence of a quasi-2D network of Cu2+ (S = 1/2) buckled staircase Kagome layers, the chi(T) data show magnetic anisotropy and three magnetic anomalies at temperatures, TN1 ~ 36 K, TN2 ~ 25 K, TN3 ~ 17 K, respectively. The chi(T) data follow the Curie-Weiss law above 200 K and a Curie-Weiss temperature Theta_CW ~ -150 K is obtained. The data deviate from the simple Curie-Weiss law below 200 K, which is well above TN1, suggesting the presence of competing magnetic interactions. The magnetic anomaly at TN3 appears to be of first-order from magnetization measurements, although our heat-capacity Cp(T) results do not display any anomaly at TN3. The hopping integrals obtained from our electronic structure calculations suggest the presence of significant intra-Kagome (next-nearest neighbor and diagonal) and inter-Kagome couplings. These couplings take the PbCu3TeO7 system away from a disordered ground state and lead to long-range order, in contrast to what might be expected for an ideal (isotropic) 2D Kagome system.

Electric field control of nonvolatile four-state magnetization at room temperature

We find the realization of large converse magnetoelectric (ME) effects at room temperature in a multiferroic hexaferrite Ba$_{0.52}$Sr$_{2.48}$Co$_{2}$Fe$_{24}$O$_{41}$ single crystal, in which rapid change of electric polarization in low magnetic fields (about 5 mT) is coined to a large ME susceptibility of 3200 ps/m. The modulation of magnetization then reaches up to 0.62 $μ$$_{B}$/f.u. in an electric field of 1.14 MV/m. We find further that four ME states induced by different ME poling exhibit unique, nonvolatile magnetization versus electric field curves, which can be approximately described by an effective free energy with a distinct set of ME coefficients.

High Mobility in a Stable Transparent Perovskite Oxide

We discovered that La-doped BaSnO3 with the perovskite structure has an unprecedentedly high mobility at room temperature while retaining its optical transparency. In single crystals, the mobility reached 320 cm^2(Vs)^-1 at a doping level of 8x10^19 cm^-3, constituting the highest value among wide-band-gap semiconductors. In epitaxial films, the maximum mobility was 70 cm^2(Vs)^-1 at a doping level of 4.4x10^20 cm^-3. We also show that resistance of (Ba,La)SnO3 changes little even after a thermal cycle to 530 Deg. C in air, pointing to an unusual stability of oxygen atoms and great potential for realizing transparent high-frequency, high-power functional devices.

Orbital selective Fermi surface shifts and mechanism of high T$_c$ superconductivity in correlated AFeAs (A=Li,Na)

Based on the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we have investigated the mechanism of high $T_c$ superconductivity in stoichiometric LiFeAs. The calculated spectrum is in excellent agreement with the observed ARPES measurement. The Fermi surface (FS) nesting, which is predicted in the conventional density functional theory method, is suppressed due to the orbital-dependent correlation effect with the DMFT method. We have shown that such marginal breakdown of the FS nesting is an essential condition to the spin-fluctuation mediated superconductivity, while the good FS nesting in NaFeAs induces a spin density wave ground state. Our results indicate that fully charge self-consistent description of the correlation effect is crucial in the description of the FS nesting-driven instabilities.

Physical properties of transparent perovskite oxides (Ba,La)SnO3 with high electrical mobility at room temperature

Transparent electronic materials are increasingly in demand for a variety of optoelectronic applications. BaSnO3 is a semiconducting oxide with a large band gap of more than 3.1 eV. Recently, we discovered that La doped BaSnO3 exhibits unusually high electrical mobility of 320 cm^2(Vs)^-1 at room temperature and superior thermal stability at high temperatures [H. J. Kim et al. Appl. Phys. Express. 5, 061102 (2012)]. Following that work, we report various physical properties of (Ba,La)SnO3 single crystals and films including temperature-dependent transport and phonon properties, optical properties and first-principles calculations. We find that almost doping-independent mobility of 200-300 cm^2(Vs)^-1 is realized in the single crystals in a broad doping range from 1.0x10^19 to 4.0x10^20 cm^-3. Moreover, the conductivity of ~10^4 ohm^-1cm^-1 reached at the latter carrier density is comparable to the highest value. We attribute the high mobility to several physical properties of (Ba,La)SnO3: a small effective mass coming from the ideal Sn-O-Sn bonding, small disorder effects due to the doping away from the SnO2 conduction channel, and reduced carrier scattering due to the high dielectric constant. The observation of a reduced mobility of ~70 cm^2(Vs)^-1 in the film is mainly attributed to additional carrier-scatterings which are presumably created by the lattice mismatch between the substrate SrTiO3 and (Ba,La)SnO3. The main optical gap of (Ba,La)SnO3 single crystals remained at about 3.33 eV and the in-gap states only slightly increased, thus maintaining optical transparency in the visible region. Based on these, we suggest that the doped BaSnO3 system holds great potential for realizing all perovskite-based, transparent high-frequency high-power functional devices as well as highly mobile two-dimensional electron gas via interface control of heterostructured films.

Probing the Order Parameter of Superconducting LiFeAs using Pb/LiFeAs and Au/LiFeAs Point-Contact Spectroscopy

We have fabricated c-axis point contact junctions between high-quality LiFeAs single crystals and Pb or Au tips in order to study the nature of the superconducting order parameter of LiFeAs, one of the few stoichiometric iron-based superconductors. The observation of the Josephson current in c-axis junctions with a conventional s-wave superconductor as the counterelectrode indicates that the pairing symmetry in LiFeAs is not pure d-wave or pure spin-triplet p-wave. A superconducting gap is clearly observed in point contact Andreev reflection measurements performed on both Pb/LiFeAs and Au/LiFeAs junctions. The conductance spectra can be well described by the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model with a lifetime broadening term, resulting in a gap value of \approx 1.6 meV (2Δ/kBTC \approx 2.2).

Theoretical Modeling of ME effect at Low frequency and Resonance Frequency for Magnetoelectric Laminates with Anisotropic Piezoelectric Properties

A new theory is developed for the magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in a symmetric 2-2 ME laminate having a representative piezoelectric crystal (PMN-PT) particularly with anisotropic piezoelectric properties. Considering the average field method, the theoretical expressions for the transverse ME voltage coefficients at low and resonance frequencies were derived. The theory takes into account the anisotropic properties of the piezoelectric materials providing two different expressions of transverse ME voltage coefficients for different in-plane magnetic fields both at low and resonance frequencies. The numerical simulations show multiple resonance frequencies and phase differences between transverse ME voltage coefficients showing good agreement with the experimental results. Our theory should be generally applicable to other ME laminates with any piezoelectric with anisotropic piezoelectric coefficients.

Determination of Intrinsic Ferroelectric Polarization in Orthorhombic Manganites with E-type Spin Order

By directly measuring electrical hysteresis loops using the Positive-Up Negative-Down (PUND) method, we accurately determined the remanent ferroelectric polarization Pr of orthorhombic RMnO3 (R = Ho, Tm, Yb, and Lu) compounds below their E-type spin ordering temperatures. We found that LuMnO3 has the largest Pr of 0.17 uC/cm^2 at 6 K in the series, indicating that its single-crystal form can produce a Pr of at least 0.6 \muuC/cm^2 at 0 K. Furthermore, at a fixed temperature, Pr decreases systematically with increasing rare earth ion radius from R = Lu to Ho, exhibiting a strong correlation with the variations in the in-plane Mn-O-Mn bond angle and Mn-O distances. Our experimental results suggest that the contribution of the Mn t2g orbitals dominates the ferroelectric polarization.

Large Longitudinal Magnetoelectric Coupling in NiFe2O4-BaTiO3 Laminates

In contrast to the Pb-based magnetoelectric laminates (MELs), we find in the BaTiO3 and NiFe2O4 laminates (number of layers n = 5-25) that the longitudinal magnetoelectric (ME) voltage coefficient Alpha E33 becomes much larger than the transverse one due to preferential alignment of magnetic moments along the NiFe2O4 plane. Moreover, upon decreasing each layer thickness down to 15 um, we realize enhanced Alpha E33 up to 18 mV/ (cm Oe) and systematic increase of the ME sensitivity in proportion to n to achieve the largest in the Pb-free MELs (400*10^-6V/Oe), thereby providing pathways for tailoring ME coupling in mass-produced, environment friendly laminates.

Magnetic field - dependent Labusch parameter in LiFeAs superconductor from Campbell penetration depth

A true critical current density, $j_{c}$, as opposite to commonly measured relaxed persistent (Bean) current, $j_{B}$, was extracted from the Campbell penetration depth, $λ_{C}(T,H)$ measured in single crystals of LiFeAs. The effective pinning potential is non-parabolic, which follows from the magnetic field - dependent Labusch parameter $α$. At the equilibrium (upon field - cooling), $α(H)$ is non-monotonic, but it is monotonic at a finite gradient of the vortex density. This behavior leads to a faster magnetic relaxation at the lower fields and provides a natural \emph{dynamic} explanation for the fishtail (second peak) effect. We also find the evidence for strong pinning at the lower fields. The inferred field dependence of the pinning potential is consistent with the evolution from strong pinning, through collective pinning and, eventually, to a disordered vortex lattice. The values of $j_{c}(2\text{K}) \simeq 2\times10^{6}$ A/cm$^{2}$ provide an upper estimate of the current carrying capability of LiFeAs. Overall, vortex behavior of almost isotropic, fully-gapped LiFeAs is very similar to highly anisotropic d-wave cuprate superconductors, the similarity that requires further studies in order to understand unconventional superconductivity in cuprates and pnictides.

Pauli-limiting effects in the upper critical fields of a clean LiFeAs single crystal

We have investigated the temperature-dependence of the upper critical field Hc2(T) in a LiFeAs single crystal by direct measurements of resistivity under static magnetic fields up to 36 T. We find in the case of a magnetic field H along the ab-plane that Hc2ab(0) = 30 T is clearly lower than the orbital limiting field Hc2orb,ab (0) = 39.6 T estimated by the |dHc2ab / dT|Tc, suggesting the presence of both Pauli- and orbital-limiting effects in the pair breaking process. The best fit of Hc2ab(T) to the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg formula results in the Maki parameter α = 0.9 and negligible spin-orbit scattering constant (λso = 0.0). On the other hand, for H along the c-axis, Hc2c(T) increases linearly down to our lowest temperature of 0.8 K, which can be explained by the multi-band effects. The anisotropy ratio Hc2ab(T) / Hc2c(T) is 3 near Tc and systematically decreases upon lowering temperature to become 1.3 at zero temperature. A comparative overview of the behavior of Hc2ab(T) in various Fe-based superconductors shows that, similar to LiFeAs, the calculated Hc2orb,ab (0) is generally much larger than the measured Hc2ab(0) and thus finite α values ranging from ~ 0.4 to 3 are necessary to describe the low temperature Hc2ab(T) behaviors. Moreover, LiFeAs is found to have the smallest |dHc2ab / dT|Tc values, indicating that LiFeAs is one of the cleanest Fe-based superconductors with a finite Maki parameter. We also discuss the implications of multi-band effects and spin-orbit scattering based on the finding that the estimated Pauli-limiting field is generally much larger than the BCS prediction in the Fe-based superconductors.

Strong magnetoelastic effect on the magnetoelectric phenomena of TbMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$

Comparative studies of magnetoelectric susceptibility ($α$), magnetization ($M$), and magnetostriction ($u$) in TbMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$ reveal that the increment of $M$ owing to the field-induced Tb$^{3+}$ spin alignment coins a field-asymmetric line shape in the $α(H)$ curve, being conspicuous in a low temperature incommensurate phase but persistently subsisting in the entire ferroelectric phase. Correlations among electric polarization, $u$, and $M^{2}$ variation represent linear relationships, unambiguously showing the significant role of Tb magnetoelastic effects on the low field magnetoelectric phenomena of TbMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$. An effective free energy capturing the observed experimental features is also suggested.

Determination of the intrinsic ferroelectric polarization in orthorhombic HoMnO3

Whether large ferroelectric polarization P exists in the orthorhombic HoMnO3 with the E-type antiferromagnetic spin ordering or not remains as one of unresolved, challenging issues in the physics of multiferroics. The issue is closely linked to an intriguing experimental difficulty for determining P of polycrystalline specimens that conventional pyroelectric current measurements performed after a poling procedure under high dc electric fields are subject to large errors due to the problems caused by leakage currents or space charges. To overcome the difficulty, we employed the PUND method, which uses successively the two positive and two negative electrical pulses, to directly measure electrical hysteresis loops in several polycrystalline HoMnO3 specimens below their Néel temperatures. We found that all the HoMnO3 samples had similar remnant polarization Pr values at each temperature, regardless of their variations in resistivity, dielectric constant, and pyroelectric current levels. Moreover, Pr of ~0.07 μ\C/cm2 at 6 K is consistent with the P value obtained from the pyroelectric current measurement performed after a short pulse poling. Our findings suggest that intrinsic P of polycrystalline HoMnO3 can be determined through the PUND method and P at 0 K may reach ~0.24 μ\C/cm2 in a single crystalline specimen.

Electron-hole asymmetry in Co- and Mn-doped SrFe2As2

Phase diagram of electron and hole-doped SrFe2As2 single crystals is investigated using Co and Mn substitution at the Fe-sites. We found that the spin-density-wave state is suppressed by both dopants, but the superconducting phase appears only for Co (electron)-doping, not for Mn (hole)-doping. Absence of the superconductivity by Mn-doping is in sharp contrast to the hole-doped system with K-substitution at the Sr sites. Distinct structural change, in particular the increase of the Fe-As distance by Mn-doping is important to have a magnetic and semiconducting ground state as confirmed by first principles calculations. The absence of electron-hole symmetry in the Fe-site-doped SrFe2As2 suggests that the occurrence of high-Tc superconductivity is sensitive to the structural modification rather than the charge doping.

Evidence for dominant Pauli paramagnetic effect in the upper critical fields of a FeTe0.6Se0.4 superconductor

We investigate temperature-dependence of the upper critical fields Hc2(T) of a superconducting FeTe0.6Se0.4 single crystal by measuring resistivity in static magnetic fields up to 45 T. The observations of strong bending in the Hc2ab(T) curves and nearly isotropic Hc2ab(0) ~ Hc2c(0) ~ 48 T support the presence of strong Pauli paramagnetic effect. We show that the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg formula considering the Pauli limiting and the spin-orbit scattering together can effectively describe both Hc2ab(T) and Hc2c(T) curves. The enhancement in quasi-particle density of states or increased scattering resulting from Te(Se) vacancy or excess Fe is discussed as a possible origin for the manifesting Pauli paramagnetic effect.

Evidence of a universal and isotropic 2Δ/kBTC ratio in 122-type iron pnictide superconductors over a wide doping range

We have systematically investigated the doping and the directional dependence of the gap structure in the 122-type iron pnictide superconductors by point contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy. The studies were performed on single crystals of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (x = 0.29, 0.49, and 0.77) and SrFe1.74Co0.26As2 with a sharp tip of Pb or Au pressed along the c-axis or the ab-plane direction. The conductance spectra obtained on highly transparent contacts clearly show evidence of a robust superconducting gap. The normalized curves can be well described by the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model with a lifetime broadening. The determined gap value scales very well with the transition temperature, giving the 2Δ/kBTC value of ~ 3.1. The results suggest the presence of a universal coupling behavior in this class of iron pnictides over a broad doping range and independent of the sign of the doping. Moreover, conductance spectra obtained on c-axis junctions and ab-plane junctions indicate that the observed gap is isotropic in these superconductors.

Low-magnetic-field control of dielectric constant at room temperature realized in Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2Fe12O22

We show that room temperature resistivity of Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2Fe12O22 single crystals increases by more than three orders of magnitude upon being subjected to optimized heat treatments. The increase in the resistivity allows the determination of magnetic field (H)-induced ferroelectric phase boundaries up to 310 K through the measurements of dielectric constant at a frequency of 10 MHz. Between 280 and 310 K, the dielectric constant curve shows a peak centered at zero magnetic field and thereafter decreases monotonically up to 0.1 T, exhibiting a magnetodielectric effect of 1.1%. This effect is ascribed to the realization of magnetic field-induced ferroelectricity at an H value of less than 0.1 T near room temperature. Comparison between electric and magnetic phase diagrams in wide temperature- and field-windows suggests that the magnetic field for inducing ferroelectricity has decreased near its helical spin ordering temperature around 315 K due to the reduction of spin anisotropy in Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2Fe12O22.

Nearly isotropic upper critical fields in a SrFe$_{1.85}$Co$_{0.15}$As$_{2}$ single crystal

We study temperature dependent upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$ of a SrFe$_{1.85}$Co$_{0.15}$As$_{2}$ single crystal (\textit{T$_c$}=20.2 K) along \textit{ab}-plane and \textit{c}-axis through resistivity measurements up to 50 T. For the both crystalline directions, $H_{\rm c2}$ becomes nearly isotropic at zero temperature limit, reaching $\sim$ 48 T. The temperature dependence of the $H_{\rm c2}$ curves is explained by interplay between orbital and Pauli limiting behaviors combined with the two band effects.

The canting angles and fluctuation of the magnetic ion spins of spinel oxide MnCr${}_2$O${}_4$ were studied by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) at low temperatures, which has a collinear ferrimagnetic order below $T_C$ and a ferrimagnetic spiral order below $T_s < T_C$. Contrary to previous reports, only one spin canting angle of Cr ions was observed. The spin canting angles of Mn and Cr ions in the ferrimagnetic spiral obtained at a liquid-He temperature were $43\,^{\circ}$ and $110\,^{\circ}$, respectively. The nuclear spin-spin relaxation was determined by the Suhl-Nakamura interaction at low temperatures but the relaxation rate $T_2^{-1}$ increases rapidly as the temperature approaches $T_s$. This indicates that the fluctuation of the spiral component becomes faster as the temperature increases but not fast enough to leave an averaged hyperfine field to nuclei in the time scale of nuclear spin precession in the ferrimagnetic phase, which is on the order of $10^{-8}$ s. The spiral volume fraction measured for various temperatures reveals that the collinear and the spiral ferrimagnetic phases are mixed below the transition temperature of the spiral order. The temperature hysteresis in the volume fraction implies that this transition has first-order characteristics.

Quantitative determination of anisotropic magnetoelectric coupling in BiFeO$_{3}$-CoFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ nanostructures

The transverse and longitudinal magnetoelectric susceptibilities (MES) were quantitatively determined for (001) heteroepitaxial BiFeO$_{3}$-CoFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ nanostructures. Both of these MES values were sharply enhanced at magnetic fields below 6 kOe and revealed asymmetric lineshapes with respect to the dc magnetic field, demonstrating the strain-induced magnetoelectric effect. The maximum transverse MES, which reached as high as $\sim$60 mV/cm Oe, was about five times larger than the longitudinal MES. This observation signifies that transverse magnetostriction of the CoFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ nanopillars is enhanced more than the bulk value due to preferred magnetic domain alignment along the [001] direction coming from compressive, heteroepitaxial strain.

Realization of giant magnetoelectricity in helimagnets

We show that low field magnetoelectric (ME) properties of helimagnets Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2(Fe1-xAlx)12O22 can be efficiently tailored by Al-substitution level. As x increases, the critical magnetic field for switching electric polarization is systematically reduced from ~1 T down to ~1 mT, and the ME susceptibility is greatly enhanced to reach a giant value of 2.0 x 10^4 ps/m at an optimum x = 0.08. We find that control of nontrivial orbital moment in the octahedral Fe sites through the Al-substitution is crucial for fine tuning of magnetic anisotropy and obtaining the conspicuously improved ME characteristics.

Single crystal growth and superconducting properties of LiFeAs

We report the successful growth of high quality single crystals of LiFeAs with lateral sizes up to 5 x 5 mm2 by the Sn-flux method. Electrical resistivity studies reveal that the superconducting onset temperature is 18.2 K with a transition width less than 1.1 K and the ratio of room temperature to residual resistivity is about 24. Bulk superconductivity is supported by perfect shielding in the magnetic susceptibility and a clear jump in the specific heat Cp, resulting in deltaCp/T ~ 20.0 mJ/mol*K2. Upper critical field slopes of dHc2c/dT ~ -1.39 and dHc2ab/dT ~ -2.99 T/K near Tc predict zero temperature upper critical fields of Hc2c(0) ~ 17.2 and Hc2ab(0) ~ 36.9 T and coherence lengths of Xi_ab = 4.4 and Xi_c = 2.0 nm in a single band model. This result points to a modest superconducting anisotropy about 2.3 in LiFeAs.

Coupling of localized moments and itinerant electrons in EuFe2As2 single crystals studied by Electron Spin Resonance

Electron spin resonance measurements in EuFe2As2 single crystals revealed an absorption spectrum of a single resonance with Dysonian lineshape. Above the spin-density wave transition at T_SDW = 190 K the spectra are isotropic and the spin relaxation is strongly coupled to the CEs resulting in a Korringa-like increase of the linewidth. Below T_SDW, a distinct anisotropy develops and the relaxation behavior of the Eu spins changes drastically into one with characteristic properties of a magnetic insulating system, where dipolar and crystal-field interactions dominate. This indicates a spatial confinement of the conduction electrons to the FeAs layers in the SDW state.

Vortex-glass phase transition and superconductivity in an under- doped (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystal

Measurements of magnetotransport and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics up to 9 T were used to investigate the vortex phase diagram of an under-doped Measurements of magnetotransport and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics up to 9 T were used to investigate the vortex phase diagram of an under-doped (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystal with Tc=26.2 K. It is found that the anisotropy ratio of the upper critical field Hc2 decreases from 4 to 2.8 with decreasing temperature from Tc to 24.8 K. Consistent with the vortex-glass theory, the I-V curves measured at H=9 T can be well scaled with the vortex-glass transition temperature of Tg=20.7 K and critical exponents z=4.1 and v=1. Analyses in different magnetic fields produced almost identical critical exponent values, with some variation in Tg, corroborating the existence of the vortex-glass transition in this under-doped (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystal up to 9 T. A vortex phase diagram is presented, based on the evolution of Tg and Hc2 with magnetic field.

Current-voltage characteristics of NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 and NdFeAsO0.85 superconductors

The vortex phase diagrams of NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 and NdFeAsO0.85 superconductors are determined from the analysis of resistivity and current-voltage (I-V) measurements in magnetic fields up to 9 T. A clear vortex glass to liquid transition is identified only in the oxygen deficient NdFeAsO0.85, in which I-V curves can be well scaled onto liquid and glass branches consistent with the vortex glass theory. With increasing magnetic field, the activation energy U0, deduced from the Arrhenius plots of resistivity based on the thermally activated flux-flow model (TAFF), decays more quickly for NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 than for NdFeAsO0.85. Moreover, the irreversibility field Hirr of NdFeAsO0.85 increases more rapidly than that of NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 with decreasing temperature. These observations evidence the strong vortex pinning effects, presumably caused by the enhanced defects and disorders in the oxygen deficient NdFeAsO0.85. It is inferred that the enhanced defects and disorder can be also responsible for the vortex glass to liquid transition in the NdFeAsO0.85.

Interplay between Fermi surface topology and ordering in URu$_{2}$Si$_2$ revealed through abrupt Hall coefficient changes in strong magnetic fields

Temperature- and field-dependent measurements of the Hall effect of pure and 4 % Rh-doped URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ reveal low density (0.03 hole/U) high mobility carriers to be unique to the `hidden order' phase and consistent with an itinerant density-wave order parameter. The Fermi surface undergoes a series of abrupt changes as the magnetic field is increased. When combined with existing de Haas-van Alphen data, the Hall data expose a strong interplay between the stability of the `hidden order,' the degree of polarization of the Fermi liquid and the Fermi surface topology.

Magnetoelectric effects of nanoparticulate Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3-NiFe2O4 composite films

We fabricated Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3-NiFe2O4 composite films consisting of randomly dispersed NiFe2O4 nanoparticles in the Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 matrix. The structural analysis revealed that the crystal axes of the NiFe2O4 nanoparticles are aligned with those of the ferroelectric matrix. The composite has good ferroelectric and magnetic properties. We measured the transverse and longitudinal components of the magnetoelectric voltage coefficient, which supports the postulate that the magnetoelectric effect comes from direct stress coupling between magnetostrictive NiFe2O4 and piezoelectric Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 grains.
