Neutron scattering cross section of diamond nanoparticle

Due to their large coherent scattering cross section, diamond nanoparticles (DNPs) are considered as a promising candidate material for a new neutron reflector. For investigation of scattering cross sections of packed samples, we have developed a technique for mechanical compression of DNP powder. Application of 220 MPa allowed us to increase the bulk density from 0.40 g/cm$^3$ to 1.1 g/cm$^3$. The differential cross sections of uncompressed and packed samples were measured using the high-intensity total diffractometer instrument NOVA at J-PARC, covering transfer wavenumbers (q) from 0.6 to 100 nm$^{-1}$. The q dependence for the compressed sample agreed with the theoretical expectation derived from the Born approximation applied to homogeneous spheres with inclusion of a hard-sphere model to account for the inter-particle structure, whereas the results obtained from the powder sample disagreed. This implies that the theoretical description does not well represent the mesoscopic structure of the DNP powder sample.

Ultralow thermal conductivity from transverse acoustic phonon suppression in distorted crystalline α-MgAgSb

Low thermal conductivity is favorable for preserving the temperature gradient between the two ends of a thermoelectric material in order to ensure continuous electron current generation. In high-performance thermoelectric materials, there are two main low thermal conductivity mechanisms: the phonon anharmonic in PbTe and SnSe and phonon scattering resulting from the dynamic disorder in AgCrSe2 and CuCrSe2, which have been successfully revealed by inelastic neutron scattering. Using neutron scattering and ab initio calculations, we report here a mechanism of static local structure distortion combined with phonon-anharmonic-induced ultralow lattice thermal conductivity in α-MgAgSb. Since the transverse acoustic phonons are almost fully scattered by the compound's intrinsic distorted rocksalt sublattice, the heat is mainly transported by the longitudinal acoustic phonons. The ultralow thermal conductivity in α-MgAgSb is attributed to its atomic dynamics being altered by the structure distortion, which presents a possible microscopic route to enhance the performance of similar thermoelectric materials.

Bipartite magnetic parent phases in the iron-oxypnictide superconductor

High-temperature (high-$T_{\rm c}$) superconductivity appears as a consequence of the carrier-doping of an undoped parent compound exhibiting antiferromagnetic order; thereby, ground-state properties of the parent compound are closely relevant to the superconducting state. On the basis of the concept, a spin-fluctuation has been addressed as an origin of pairing of the superconducting electrons in cuprates. Whereas, there is growing interest in the pairing mechanism such as an unconventional spin-fluctuation or an advanced orbital-fluctuation due to the characteristic multi-orbital system in iron-pnictides. Here, we report the discovery of an antiferromagnetic order as well as a unique structural transition in electron-overdoped LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$ ($x$ ~ 0.5), whereby another parent phase was uncovered, albeit heavily doped. The unprecedented two-dome superconducting phases observed in this material can be interpreted as a consequence of the carrier-doping starting from the original at $x\sim0$ and advanced at $x\sim0.5$ parent phases toward the intermediate region. The bipartite parent phases with distinct physical properties in the second magnetic phase provide us with an interesting example to illustrate the intimate interplay among the magnetic interaction, structural change and orbital degree of freedom in iron-pnictides.

Local Lattice Distortion Caused by Short Range Charge Ordering in LiMn$_2$O$_4$

We have performed powder neutron diffraction on $^7$Li-enriched sample of LiMn$_2$O$_4$ at 300 K. The crystal structure determined by Rietveld analysis is a cubic spinel with space group of $Fd\bar{3}m$ in which all Mn atoms are crystallograghically equivalent, consistent with many preceding studies. However, the atomic pair distrubution function (PDF) of this compound can not be fitted by the cubic structure with space group of $Fd\bar{3}m$ satisfactorily, and it can be reproduced by the orthorhombic structure with $Fddd$. It corresponds with the structure of charge ordered phase below about 260 K, indicating a short range charge ordering. In the local structure determined by PDF analysis, two types of MnO$_6$ octahedra with long and short atomic distances between Mn and O atoms exist and their Mn-O distances are almost consistent with the distances in the charge ordered phase. From these results, valence electrons are localized at Mn sites like a glass even in the cubic phase, resulting in the non-metallic electrical conductivity.
