Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Controls of Machine Learning Based Systems: A Survey and Taxonomy

In this article, we propose the Artificial Intelligence Security Taxonomy to systematize the knowledge of threats, vulnerabilities, and security controls of machine-learning-based (ML-based) systems. We first classify the damage caused by attacks against ML-based systems, define ML-specific security, and discuss its characteristics. Next, we enumerate all relevant assets and stakeholders and provide a general taxonomy for ML-specific threats. Then, we collect a wide range of security controls against ML-specific threats through an extensive review of recent literature. Finally, we classify the vulnerabilities and controls of an ML-based system in terms of each vulnerable asset in the system's entire lifecycle.

Magnetovolume Effect on the First-Order Metamagnetic Transition in UTe$_2$

The link between the metamagnetic transition and novel spin-triplet superconductivity of UTe$_2$ was discussed thermodynamically through magnetostriction measurements in a pulsed-magnetic field. We revealed a discontinuous magnetostriction across the metamagnetic transition at $μ_0H_{\rm m}\approx 35$~T for the applied magnetic fields along the crystallographic $b$ axis in the orthorhombic structure. The resultanting volume magnetostriction of $ΔV/V \approx-5.9\times 10^{-4}$ gives the initial pressure dependence of $H_{\rm m}$ by employing the Clausius-Clapeyron's equation, which agrees with previous pressure experiments. Further, significant anisotropic magnetostriction (AMS), derived by subtracting the averaged linear magnetostriction, was revealed. Contrary to the weakly field-dependent AMS along the $a$ axis, those along the $b$ and $c$ axes show strong field dependences with a similar magnitude but with opposite signs, indicating its lattice instability. The relationship between characteristic energy scales of magnetic fields and temperatures was discussed in terms of the Grüneisen parameters compared to the other $f$-electron systems. The volume shrinkage in UTe$_2$ at $H_{\rm m}$, contrary to the volume expansion in typical heavy fermion metamagnets, pushes to invoke the link with the valence instability related to the itinerant-localized dual nature of the U magnetism.

Theory for Anomalous NMR Response in Pb_{1-x}Tl_{x}Te on Charge Kondo Effect

A theory for anomalous enhancement of NMR relaxation rate $1/T_{1}T$ of $^{125}$Te toward zero temperature observed in Pb$_{1-x}$Tl$_{x}$Te ($x$=0.01) is presented on the idea of the charge Kondo effect of valence skipping element Tl. It is found that such enhancement in $1/T_{1}T$ is caused through enhancement of the pair-hopping and inter-orbital interactions between 6s electrons localized on Tl site and conduction electrons doped in the hole band the semiconductor PbTe, which is the heart of the charge Kondo effect. It is also found that the Knight shift is not influenced in the temperature region where the relaxation rate is enhanced which is consistent with the experimental observation showing that the Korringa relation is apparently broken.

Unconventional Non-Fermi Liquid Properties of Two-Channel Anderson Impurities System

A theory for treating the unconventional non-Fermi liquid temperature dependence of physical quantities, such as the resistivity, in the Pr-based two-channel Anderson impurities system is developed. It is shown that their temperature dependences are essentially the same as those in the pure lattice system except for the case of extremely low concentration of Pr ions that is difficult to realize by a controlled experiments. This result is consistent with recent observations in diluted Pr-1-2-20 system Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_x$Ir$_2$Zn$_{20}$ ($x=0.024,\,0.044,\,0.085,$ and $0.44$) reported in Yamane $et\ al$. Phys. Rev. Lett. ${\bf 121}$, 077206 (2018), and is quite different from that in the case of single-channel Anderson impurities system in which the crossover between behaviors of the local Fermi liquid and heavy Fermi liquid occurs at around moderate concentration of impurities as observed in Ce-based heavy fermion system La$_{1-x}$Ce$_x$Cu$_6$.

On Sharp Enhancement of Effective Mass of Quasiparticles and Coefficient of T^{2} Term of Resistivity around First-Order Metamagnetic Transition Observed in UTe_{2}

The mechanism underlying the enhancement of the Sommerfeld coefficient of quasiparticles at the first-order metamagnetic transition in UTe_2, reported by Miyake et al. in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 88, 063706 (2019), is discussed theoretically by taking into account the ferromagnetic order-parameter fluctuations on the basis of the Landau theory of phase transition. We find that the enhanced ferromagnetic spin fluctuation gives rise to the enhancement of the effective mass of the quasiparticles or the Sommerfeld coefficient γ,which is consistent with the experimental observations. At the same time, the Kadowaki-Woods type scaling around the metamagnetic transition, reported by Imajo et al.in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 88, 083705 (2019) and Knafo et al. in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 88, 063705 (2019), is also understood semi-quantitatively by assuming reasonable values of parameters of Landau-type free energy reproducing key quantities characterizing the metamagnetic transition.

Quantum Criticality of Valence Transition for the Unique Electronic State of Antiferromagnetic Compound EuCu2Ge2

The effect of pressure on the unique electronic state of the antiferromagnetic (AF) compound EuCu2Ge2 has been measured in a wide temperature range from 10 mK to 300 K by electrical resistivity measurements up to 10 GPa. The Neel temperature of TN = 15 K at ambient pressure increases monotonically with increasing pressure and becomes a maximum of TN = 27 K at 6.2 GPa but suddenly drops to zero at Pc = 6.5 GPa, suggesting the quantum critical point (QCP) of the valence transition of Eu from a nearly divalent state to that with trivalent weight. The rhomag0 and A values obtained from the low-temperature electrical resistivity based on the Fermi liquid relation of rhomag = rhomag0 + AT^2 exhibit huge and sharp peaks around Pc. The exponent n obtained from the power law dependence rhomag = rhomag0 + BT^n is clearly less than 1.5 at P = Pc = 6. 5 GPa, which is expected at the AF-QCP. These results indicate that Pc coincides with Pv, corresponding to the quantum criticality of the valence transition pressure Pv. The electronic specific heat coefficient, estimated from the generalized Kadowaki-Woods relation, is about 510 mJ/mol K^2 around Pc, suggesting the formation of a heavy-fermion state.

Spin-orbit-phonon interaction as an origin of helical-symmetry breaking spin-triplet superconducting state

The excess increase of the local field distribution width $ΔH\equivσ/γ_μ$ (with $γ_μ=135.5\,$MHz/T being the gyromagnetic ratio of $μ^{+}$), and/or the spontaneous magnetic field $H_{\rm spon}$, have been reported in the superconducting state of a series of compounds more than 10 by $μ$SR (muon spin rotation or relaxation) experiment. Sizes of these quantities are of the order of 1G on the whole. We propose that the increase of the local field distribution $ΔH$ in those compounds, including ions with strong spin-orbit interaction of 5d electrons, such as La in LaNiGa$_2$ or Re in Re$_6$Zr, is possible through the cooperation of the spin-orbit coupling between the quasiparticles and ionic vibrations (phonons) and the conventional quasiparticles-phonon coupling, inducing the spin-triplet p-wave pairing with helical symmetry breaking superconducting state with chiral super spin current around stopped $μ^{+}$ site. The size of $ΔH$ is estimated as of the order of 1G, in consistent with experimental observations.

Theory for Non-Fermi Liquid Temperature Dependence in Resistivity of Ce_xLa_{1-x} Cu_{5.62} Au_{0.38} (x=0.02-0.10) on the Local Quantum Valence Criticality of Ce Impurities

It was reported by Shiino et al in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 86, 123705 (2017) that Ce_xLa_{1-x} Cu_{5.62} Au_{0.38} (x=0.02-0.10) exhibits a new type of quantum criticality in both magnetic and thermal properties, which is the same as that observed in a series of materials exhibiting quantum critical valence fluctuations (QCVF), such as β-YbAlB_4, Yb_{15}Al_{34}Au_{51}, and so on. However, the temperature (T) dependence in the resistivity rho(T) for T<0.5K is quite anomalous, i.e., ρ(T)\propto (const.-T^{n}) with n \simeq 0.75 at x=0.05. We find that this anomalous exponent is given by n=2(1-ζ), with zeta being the weakly temperature dependent (0.5 \lsim ζ\lsim 0.7) critical exponent for the QCVF.The observed critical exponent n\simeq 0.75 at x=0.05 is reproduced by choosing ζ\simeq 0.63 which is consistent with the divergent behavior observed in the uniform magnetic susceptibility χ\propto T^{-ζ} with ζ\simeq 0.67 at x=0.02.

Charge Transfer Effect under Odd-Parity Crystalline Electric Field

Charge-transfer effect under odd-parity crystalline electric field (CEF) is analyzed theoretically. In quantum-critical metal $β$-YbAlB$_4$, seven-fold configuration of B atoms surrounding Yb atom breaks local inversion symmetry at the Yb site, giving rise to the odd-parity CEF. Analysis of the CEF on the basis of hybridization picture shows that admixture of 4f and 5d wave functions at Yb with pure imaginary coefficient occurs, which makes magnetic-toroidal (MT) and electric-dipole (ED) degrees of freedom active. By constructing the minimal model for periodic crystal $β$-YbAlB$_4$, we show that the MT as well as ED fluctuation is divergently enhanced at the quantum critical point of valence transition simultaneously with critical valence fluctuations.

Quantum Valence Criticality in Heavy Fermions on Periodic and Aperiodic Crystals

Progress of theories and experiments of the quantum valence criticality is overviewed focusing on recent discoveries of direct evidence of quantum critical point of valence transitions in periodic crystal $α$-YbAl$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$B$_4$ at $x=0.014$ and quasicrystal Yb$_{15}$(Al$_{1-x} $Ga$_{x}$)$_{34}$(Au$_{1-y}$Cu$_{y}$)$_{51}$ at $x=y=0$. The common quantum criticality as well as $T/B$ scaling behavior in the magnetization observed in the periodic crystal $β$-YbAlB$_4$ and quasicrystal Yb$_{15}$Al$_{34}$Au$_{51}$ is shown to be explained from the theory of critical Yb-valence fluctuations starting from the Hamiltonians for describing the low-energy electronic states in both systems.

Anomalous Local Fermi Liquid in $f^{2}$-Singlet Configuration: Impurity Model for Heavy-Electron System UPt_3

It is shown by the Wilson numerical renormalization group method that a strongly correlated impurity with a crystalline-electric-field singlet ground state in the f^2-configuration exhibits an anomalous local Fermi liquid state in which the static magnetic susceptibility remains an uncorrelated value while the NMR relaxation rate is enhanced in proportion to the square of the mass enhancement factor. Namely, the Korringa-Shiba relation is apparently broken. This feature closely matches the anomalous behaviors observed in UPt_3, i.e., the coexistence of an unenhanced value of the Knight shift due to quasiparticles contribution (the decrease across the superconducting transition) and the enhanced relaxation rate of NMR. Such an anomalous Fermi liquid behavior suggests that the Fermi liquid corrections for the susceptibility are highly anisotropic.

Basic Properties of Conductivity and Normal Hall Effect in the Periodic Anderson Model

Exact formulas of diagonal conductivity $σ_{xx}$ and Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ are derived from the Kubo formula in hybridized two-orbital systems with arbitrary band dispersions. On the basis of the theoretical framework for the Fermi liquid based on these formulas, the ground-state properties of the periodic Anderson model with electron correlation and weak impurity scattering are studied on the square lattice. It is shown that imbalance of the mass-renormalization factors in $σ_{xx}$ and $σ_{xy}$ causes remarkable increase in the valence-fluctuation regime as the f level increases while the cancellation of the renormalization factors causes slight increase in $σ_{xx}$ and $σ_{xy}$ in the Kondo regime. The Hall coefficient $R_{\rm H}$ shows almost constant behavior in both the regimes. Near half filling, $R_{\rm H}$ is expressed by the total hole density as $R_{\rm H}=1/(\bar{n}_{\rm hole}e)$ while $R_{\rm H}$ approaches zero near quarter filling, which reflects the curvature of the Fermi surface. These results hold as far as the damping rate for f electrons is less than about $10~\%$ of the renormalized hybridization gap. From these results we discuss pressure dependence of residual resistivity and normal Hall effect in Ce- and Yb-based heavy electron systems.

Origin of Quantum Criticality in Yb-Al-Au Approximant Crystal and Quasicrystal

To get insight into the mechanism of emergence of unconventional quantum criticality observed in quasicrystal Yb$_{15}$Al$_{34}$Au$_{51}$, the approximant crystal Yb$_{14}$Al$_{35}$Au$_{51}$ is analyzed theoretically. By constructing a minimal model for the approximant crystal, the heavy quasiparticle band is shown to emerge near the Fermi level because of strong correlation of 4f electrons at Yb. We find that charge-transfer mode between 4f electron at Yb on the 3rd shell and 3p electron at Al on the 4th shell in Tsai-type cluster is considerably enhanced with almost flat momentum dependence. The mode-coupling theory shows that magnetic as well as valence susceptibility exhibits $χ\sim T^{-0.5}$ for zero-field limit and is expressed as a single scaling function of the ratio of temperature to magnetic field $T/B$ over four decades even in the approximant crystal when some condition is satisfied by varying parameters, e.g., by applying pressure. The key origin is clarified to be due to the strong locality of the critical Yb-valence fluctuation and small Brillouin zone reflecting the large unit cell, giving rise to the extremely-small characteristic energy scale. This also gives a natural explanation for the quantum criticality in the quasicrystal corresponding to the infinite limit of the unit-cell size.

Deformation of the Fermi Surface and Anomalous Mass Renormalization by Critical Spin Fluctuations through Asymmetric Spin-Orbit Interaction

It is shown that an asymmetric spin-orbit interaction is appreciably renormalized by the effect of critical spin fluctuations. As an explicit example, the Rashba-type interaction is predicted to be suppressed by anti-ferromagnetic critical fluctuations near the hot line (or point), leading to a deformation of the Fermi surface near the hot line (or point) around which the band splitting is decreased, while ferromagnetic critical fluctuations are shown to enhance the Rashba-type interaction everywhere on the Fermi surface, leading to an increase in the band splitting. It is also found that the many-body mass renormalization, which diverges towards the magnetic quantum critical point, is in the opposite sign for the two split bands by the Rashba-type interaction. These predictions are observable by the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect in principle.

Ginzburg-Landau Formalism for 2n-Body Condensation

The Ginzburg-Landau formalism is constructed for Fermi superfluidity based on the 2n-body condensation in parallel with the usual Ginzburg-Landau formalism for the Cooper pair condensation. By this formalism, the transition temperature of the 2n-body condensation is given compactly by the zero of coefficient of the quadratic term in the 2n-body condensed order parameter without counting complicated Feynman diagrams for the 2n-body condensation susceptibility. It is shown that the 2n-body condensed state is stabilized in the intermediate- or strong-coupling regime against the BCS state based on the Cooper pair condensation. This theory is applied to the case of the possible superfluid state of cold atomic gases such as $^9$Be and $^{173}$Yb; the quartet state is possible in the former case, while the sextet state is expected in the latter case. It is predicted that the $^{173}$Yb atomic gas so far attained satisfies the condition for the sextet condensed state to be realized.

Intrinsic Angular Momentum and Intrinsic Magnetic Moment of Chiral Superconductor on Two-Dimensional Square Lattice

The intrinsic magnetic moment (IMM) and intrinsic angular momentum (IAM) of a chiral superconductor with $p$-wave symmetry on a two-dimensional square lattice are discussed on the basis of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. The the IMM and IAM are shown to be on the order of $μ_{\rm B}N$ and $\hbar N$, respectively, $N$ being the total number of particles, without an extra factor $(T_{\rm c}/T_{\rm F})^γ$ ($γ=1,2$), and parallel to the pair angular momentum. They arise from the current in the surface layer with a width on the order of the coherence length $ξ_{0}$, the size of Cooper pairs. However, in a single-band model, they are considerably canceled by the contribution from the Meissner surface current in a layer with the width of the penetration depth $λ$, making it difficult to observe them experimentally. In the case of multi-band metals with both electron-like and hole-like bands, however, considerable cancellation still occurs for the IMM but not for the IAM, making it possible to observe the IAM selectively because the effect of the Meissner current becomes less important. As an example of a multi-band metal, the case of the spin-triplet chiral superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is discussed and experiments for observing the IAM are proposed.

Non-Fermi Liquid and Fermi Liquid in Two-Channel Anderson Lattice Model: Theory for Pr$A_2$Al$_{20}$ ($A$=V, Ti) and PrIr$_2$Zn$_{20}$

We theoretically investigate electronic states and physical properties in a two-channel Anderson lattice model to understand the non-Fermi liquid behaviors observed in PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$ and PrIr$_2$Zn$_{20}$ whose ground state of the crystalline electric field for local $f$-electron is the $Γ_3$ non-Kramers doublet of $f^2$-configuration and excited state is the $Γ_7$ Kramers doublet of $f^1$-configuration. We use the expansion from the limit of large degeneracy $N$ of the ground state ($1/N$-expansion), with $N$ being the spin-orbital degeneracy. Inclusion of the self-energy of the conduction electrons up to the order of $O(1/N)$ leads to heavy electron with channel and spin-orbit degeneracies. We find that the electrical resistivity is proportional to temperature $T$ in the limit of $T\to0$ and follows $\sqrt{T}$-law in the wide region of temperature, i.e., $T_x<T<T_0$, where typical values of $T_x$ and $T_0$ are $T_x\sim10^{-3}T_{\rm K}$ and $T_0\sim10^{-2}T_{\rm K}$, respectively, $T_{\rm K}$ being the Kondo temperature of the model. We also find non-Fermi liquid behaviors at $T\ll T_{\rm K}$ in a series of physical quantities; the chemical potential, the specific heat, and the magnetic susceptibility, explaining the non-Fermi liquid behaviors observed in PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$ and PrIr$_2$Zn$_{20}$. At the same time, we find that the Fermi liquid behavior becomes prominent for the system with smaller hybridization between $f$- and conduction electrons, explaining the Fermi liquid behaviors observed in PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$.

BCS-BEC Crossover in Two-Dimensional Attractive Hubbard Model under Magnetic Field

The Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)-Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover in the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model under the magnetic field is discussed at the half-filling at T=0 K on the basis of the formalism of Eagles and Leggett. It is shown that the so-called Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinikov-like state with a non-zero center-of-mass wave vector ${\bf q}\not=0$ is not stabilized in the weak-coupling (BCS) region, while such a state with ${\bf q}\not=0$ is stabilized against that with ${\bf q}=0$ even in a wide strong-coupling (BEC) region where di-fermion molecules are formed. The physical implication of this surprising result is discussed.

T/B Scaling in beta-YbAlB4

The scaling behavior over four decades of the ratio of temperature T to magnetic field B observed in the magnetization in beta-YbAlB4 is theoretically examined. By developing a theoretical framework that exhibits the quantum critical phenomena of Yb-valence fluctuations under a magnetic field, we show that the T/B-scaling behavior can appear near the quantum critical point of the valence transition. The emergence of the T/B scaling indicates the presence of the small characteristic energy scale of critical Yb-valence fluctuations. It is argued that the quantum valence criticality offers a unified explanation for the unconventional quantum criticality as well as the T/B scaling in beta-YbAlB4.

Theory of Pairing Assisted Spin Polarization in Spin-Triplet Equal Spin Pairing: Origin of Extra Magnetization in Sr_2RuO_4 in Superconducting State

It is shown that an extra magnetization is induced by an onset of the equal-spin-pairing of spin triplet superconductivity if the energy dependence of the density of states of quasiparticles exists in the normal state. It turns out that the effect is observable in Sr_2RuO_4 due to the existence of van Hove singularity in the density of states near the Fermi level, explaining the extra contribution in the Knight shift reported by Ishida et al. It is also quite non-trivial that this effect exists even without external magnetic field, which implies that the time reversal symmetry is spontaneously broken in the spin space.

Unconventional Quantum Criticality due to Critical Valence Transition

Quantum criticality due to the valence transition in some Yb-based heavy fermion metals has gradually turned out to play a crucial role to understand the non-Fermi liquid properties that cannot be understood from the conventional quantum criticality theory due to magnetic transitions. Namely, critical exponents giving the temperature (T) dependence of the resistivity ρ(T), the Sommerfeld coefficient, C(T)/T, the magnetic susceptibility, χ(T), and the NMR relaxation rates, 1/(T_{1}T), can be understood as the effect of the critical valence fluctuations of f electrons in Yb ion in a unified way. There also exist a series of Ce-based heavy fermion metals that exhibit anomalies in physical quantities, enhancements of the residual resistivity ρ_{0} and the superconducting critical temperature (T_c) around the pressure where the valence of Ce sharply changes. Here we review the present status of these problems both from experimental and theoretical aspects.

Wide Quantum Critical Region of Valence Fluctuations: Origin of Robust Quantum Criticality in Quasicrystal Yb15Al34Au51 under Pressure

The mechanism of the emergence of robust quantum criticality in the heavy-electron quasicrystal Yb15Al34Au51 is analyzed theoretically. By constructing a minimal model for the quasicrystal and its crystalline approximant, which contain concentric shell structures with Yb and Al-Au clusters, we show that a set of quantum critical points of the first-order valence transition of Yb appears as spots in the ground-state phase diagram. Their critical regions overlap each other, giving rise to a wide quantum critical region. This well explains the robust criticality observed in Yb15Al34Au51 under pressure, and predicts the emergence of the common criticality in the crystalline approximant under pressure. The wider critical region in the quasicrystal than that in the crystalline approximant in the T-P phase diagram and the field-induced valence-crossover "region" in the T-H phase diagram are predicted to appear.

Effect of Spin-Orbit Interaction on (4d)^3- and (5d)^3 -Based Transition-Metal Oxides

The effects of a spin-orbit interaction on transition-metal ions of (4d)^3- and (5d)^3 -based oxides in which three electrons occupy t_{2g} orbitals are studied. The amplitude of the magnetic moment of d electrons on the 5d and 4d orbitals is estimated by numerical diagonalization. It is found that the magnetic moment is reduced by the spin-orbit interaction. It is suggested that (4d)^3- and (5d)^3 -based oxides are located in the middle of the L-S and J-J coupling schemes.

Robustness of Quantum Criticality of Valence Fluctuations

The mechanism of emergence of robust quantum criticality in Yb- and Ce-based heavy electron systems under pressure is analyzed theoretically. By constructing a minimal model for quasicrystal Yb15Al34Au51 and its approximant, we show that quantum critical points of the first-order valence transition of Yb appear in the ground-state phase diagram with their critical regimes being overlapped to be unified, giving rise to a wide quantum critical regime. This well explains the robust unconventional criticality observed in Yb15Al34Au51 under pressure. We also discuss broader applicability of this mechanism to other Yb- and Ce-based systems such as beta-YbAlB4 showing unconventional quantum criticality.

New Universality Class of Quantum Criticality in Ce- and Yb-based Heavy Fermions

A new universality class of quantum criticality emerging in itinerant electron systems with strong local electron correlations is discussed. The quantum criticality of a Ce- or Yb-valence transition gives us a unified explanation for unconventional criticality commonly observed in heavy fermion metals such as YbRh2Si2 and β-YbAlB4, YbCu5-xAlx, and CeIrIn5. The key origin is due to the locality of the critical valence fluctuation mode emerging near the quantum critical end point of the first-order valence transition, which is caused by strong electron correlations for f electrons. Wider relevance of this new criticality and important future measurements to uncover its origin are also discussed.

On the Origin of the Anomalous Upper Critical Field in Quasi-One-Dimensional Superconductors

Upper critical field, H_c2, in quasi-1D superconductors is investigated by the weak coupling renormalization group technique. It is shown that H_c2 greatly exceeds not only the Pauli limit, but also the conventional paramagnetic limit of the Flude-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. This increase is mainly due to quasi-1D fluctuations effect as triggered by interference between unconventional superconductivity and density-wave instabilities. Our results give a novel viewpoint on the large H_c2 observed in TMTSF-salts in terms of a d-wave FFLO state that is predicted to be verified by the H_c2 measurements under pressure.

Roles of Critical Valence Fluctuations in Ce- and Yb-Based Heavy Fermion Metals

The roles of critical valence fluctuations of Ce and Yb are discussed as a key origin of several anomalies observed in Ce- and Yb-based heavy fermion systems. Recent development of the theory has revealed that a magnetic field is an efficient control parameter to induce the critical end point of the first-order valence transition. Metamagnetism and non-Fermi liquid behavior caused by this mechanism are discussed by comparing favorably with CeIrIn5, YbAgCu4, and YbIr2Zn20. The interplay of the magnetic order and valence fluctuations offers a key concept for understanding Ce- and Yb-based systems. It is shown that suppression of the magnetic order by enhanced valence fluctuations gives rise to the coincidence of the magnetic-transition point and valence-crossover point at absolute zero as a function of pressure or magnetic field. The interplay is shown to resolve the outstanding puzzle in CeRhIn5 in a unified way. The broader applicability of this newly clarified mechanism is discussed by surveying promising materials such as YbAuCu4, beta-YbAlB4, and YbRh2Si2.

Theory of Charge Kondo Effect on Pair Hopping Mechanism

A new microscopic model of the charge Kondo effect is proposed, and is studied on the basis of a numerical renormalization group calculations. It is shown that the charge Kondo effect is caused by a pair hopping interaction between the conduction band and the localized band. It is found that the formation of a charge Kondo-Yosida singlet due to its mechanism corresponds to the appearance of valence skipping phenomenon, and that the charge Kondo-Yosida singlet and the spin Kondo-Yosida singlet state coexist for a tuned parameter set, because the charge and spin degrees of freedom are separated in this model. Then, it is also found that the Sommerfeld coefficient is enhanced by the competition between these two singlet states.

Theory of Mechanism of $π$-d Interaction in Iron-Phthalocyanine

Transition metal-phtahalocyanine(Pc) compound, TPP[Fe(Pc)(CN)$_2$]$_2$, which is one of molecular conductors of charge transfer type with 3/4-filled conduction band consisting of LUMO of Pc molecules, shows characteristic features in transport and magnetic properties resulting from localized magnetic moments $S=1/2$ associated with Fe$^{+3}$ atoms. We construct an effective tight-binding model of this system and study the mechanism of exchange interaction, $J$, between $d$ and $π$ electrons based on both second order perturbation of transfer integrals between $d$ and $π$ orbitals and numerical diagonalization. It is found that there is no hybridization between $d$-orbitals and LUMO of $π$-orbitals and then super-exchange interaction in the Anderson model does not exist. Instead, processes associated with Hund's rule both on $d$ and $π$ orbitals, which may be called "the double Hund's exchange mechanism", turn out to play important roles and the sign of resultant $J$ can be either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic depending on model parameters because of competition among various processes. By taking account of magnetic anisotropy due to spin-orbit interactions and comparing with experimental results, it is indicated that $J$ is antiferromagnetic and of the order of 100K.

Influence of Quantum Critical Point of First Order Valence Transition on Ce- and Yb-Based Heavy Fermions

Influence of quantum critical point (QCP) of first-order valence transition (FOVT) on Ce- and Yb-based heavy fermions is discussed as a key origin of anomalies such as non-Fermi liquid, metamagnetism, and unconventional superconductivity. Even in intermediate-valence materials, the QCP of the FOVT is shown to be induced by applying a magnetic field, which creates a new characteristic energy distinct from the Kondo temperature. It is stressed that the key concept is closeness to the QCP of the FOVT by pointing out that the proximity of the QCP explains sharp contrast between X=Ag and X=Cd in YbXCu4, field-induced valence crossover in X=Au, and field-induced first order transition as well as non-Fermi-liquid critical behaviours in CeIrIn5. The valence fluctuations can be a key origin of unresolved phenomena in this family of materials.

Magnetic Field Effect on Crossover Temperature from Non-Fermi Liquid to Fermi Liquid Behavior in f^2-Impurity Systems with Crystalline-Electric-Field Singlet State Competing with Kondo-Yosida Singlet State

We investigate the magnetic field dependence of the physical properties of f^2-configuration systems with a crystalline-electric field (CEF) singlet ground state, which gives rise to a non- Fermi liquid (NFL) fixed point due to the competition between the Kondo-Yosida singlet and CEF singlet states. On the basis of the numerical renormalization group method, we find that the magnetic field breaks this NFL fixed point via two mechanisms: one causing the polarization of f-electrons and the other giving the "channel" anisotropy. These two mechanisms induce a difference in the magnetic field dependence of the characteristic temperature T_F^{*}(H), the crossover temperature from NFL to Fermi-liquid behavior. While the polarization of f-electrons gives T_F^{*}(H) \propto H^x (x\sim2.0), the "channel" anisotropy gives the H-independent T_F^{*}(H). These two mechanisms cross over continuously at approximately the crossover magnetic field H_c, where an anomalous H-dependence of T_F^{*}(H) appears. Such T_F^{*}(H) well reproduces the NFL behaviors observed in Th_{1-x}U_xRu_2Si_2. We also find that the H-dependence of the resistivity and the magnetic susceptibility are in good agreement with the experimental results of this material. These results suggest that the NFL behaviors observed in Th_{1-x}U_xRu_2Si_2 can be understood if this material is located in the CEF singlet side near the critical phase boundary between the two singlet states.

On the Meissner Effect of the Odd-Frequency Superconductivity with Critical Spin Fluctuations: Possibility of Zero Field FFLO pairing

We investigate the influence of critical spin fluctuations on electromagnetic responses in the odd-frequency superconductivity. It is shown that the Meissner kernel of the odd-frequency superconductivity is strongly reduced by the critical spin fluctuation or the massless spin wave mode in the antiferromagnetic phase. These results imply that the superfluid density is reduced, and the London penetration depth is lengthened for the odd-frequency pairing. It is also shown that the zero field Flude-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing is spontaneously realized both for even- and odd-frequency in the case of sufficiently strong coupling with low lying spin-modes.

Magnetically Robust Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior in Heavy Fermion Systems with f^2-Configuration: Competition between Crystalline-Electric-Field and Kondo-Yosida Singlets

We study a magnetic field effect on the Non-Fermi Liquid (NFL) which arises around the quantum critical point (QCP) due to the competition between the f^2-crystalline-electric-field singlet and the Kondo-Yosida singlet states by using the numerical renormalization ground method. We show the characteristic temperature T_F^*, corresponding to a peak of a specific heat, is not affected by the magnetic field up to H_z^* which is determined by the distance from the QCP or characteristic energy scales of each singlet states. As a result, in the vicinity of QCP, there are parameter regions where the NFL is robust against the magnetic field, at an observable temperature range T > T_F^*, up to H_z^* which is far larger than T_F^* and less than min(T_{K2}, $Delta).

On the Puzzle of Odd-Frequency Superconductivity

Since the first theoretical proposal by Berezinskii, an odd-frequency superconductivity has encountered the fundamental problems on its thermodynamic stability and rigidity of a homogenous state accompanied by unphysical Meissner effect. Recently, Solenov {\it et al}. [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 79} (2009) 132502.] have asserted that the path-integral formulation gets rid of the difficulties leading to a stable homogenous phase with an ordinary Meissner effect. Here, we show that it is crucial to choose the appropriate saddle-point solution that minimizes the effective free energy, which was assumed {\it implicitly} in the work by Solenov and co-workers. We exhibit the path-integral framework for the odd-frequency superconductivity with general type of pairings, including an argument on the retarded functions via the analytic continuation to the real axis.

Origin of Drastic Change of Fermi Surface and Transport Anomalies in CeRhIn5 under Pressure

The mechanism of drastic change of Fermi surfaces as well as transport anomalies near P=Pc=2.35 GPa in CeRhIn5 is explained theoretically. The key mechanism is pointed out to be the interplay of magnetic order and Ce-valence fluctuations. We show that the antiferromagnetic state with "small" Fermi surfaces changes to the paramagnetic state with "large" Fermi surfaces with huge enhancement of effective mass of electrons with keeping finite c-f hybridization. This explains the drastic change of the de Haas-van Alphen signals. Furthermore, it is also consistent with the emergence of T-linear resistivity simultaneous with the residual resistivity peak at P=Pc in CeRhIn5.

Possible Odd-Frequency Superconductivity in Strong-Coupling Electron-Phonon Systems

A possibility of the odd-frequency pairing in the strong-coupling electron-phonon systems is discussed. Using the Holstein-Hubbard model, we demonstrate that the anomalously soft Einstein mode with the frequency $ω_{\rm E}\llω_{c}$ ($ω_{c}$ is the order of the renormalized bandwidth) mediates the s-wave odd-frequency triplet pairing against the ordinary even-frequency singlet pairing. It is necessary for the emergence of the odd-frequency pairing that the pairing interaction is strongly retarded as well as the strong coupling, since the pairing interaction for the odd-frequency pairing is effective only in the diagonal scattering channel, $(ω_{n},-ω_{n})\to(ω_{n'},-ω_{n'})$ with $ω_{n'}=ω_{n}\gtrsim ω_{\rm E}$. Namely, the odd-frequency superconductivity is realized in the opposite limit of the original BCS theory. The Ginzburg-Landau analysis in the strong-coupling region shows that the specific-heat discontinuity and the slope of the temperature dependence of the superfluid density can be quite small as compared with the BCS values, depending on the ratio of the transition temperature $T_{c}$ and $ω_{c}$.

Quantum Valence Criticality as Origin of Unconventional Critical Phenomena

It is shown that unconventional critical phenomena commonly observed in paramagnetic metals YbRh2Si2, YbRh2(Si0.95Ge0.05)2, and beta-YbAlB4 is naturally explained by the quantum criticality of Yb-valence fluctuations. We construct the mode coupling theory taking account of local correlation effects of f electrons and find that unconventional criticality is caused by the locality of the valence fluctuation mode. We show that measured low-temperature anomalies such as divergence of uniform spin susceptibility $χT^{-ζ)$ with $ζ~0.6$ giving rise to a huge enhancement of the Wilson ratio and the emergence of T-linear resistivity are explained in a unified way.

Sharp Valence Change as Origin of Drastic Change of Fermi Surface and Transport Anomalies in CeRhIn5 under Pressure

The drastic changes of Fermi surfaces as well as transport anomalies near P=Pc~2.35 GPa in CeRhIn5 are explained theoretically from the viewpoint of sharp valence change of Ce. It is pointed out that the key mechanism is the interplay of magnetic order and Ce-valence fluctuations. It is shown that the antiferromagnetic state with "small" Fermi surfaces changes to the paramagnetic state with "large" Fermi surfaces with huge enhancement of effective mass of electrons with keeping finite c-f hybridization. This naturally explains the de Haas-van Alphen measurement and also the transport anomalies of T-linear resistivity emerging simultaneously with the residual resistivity peak at P=Pc in CeRhIn5.

Theory of Room Temperature Ferromagnet V(TCNE)_x (1.5 < x < 2): Role of Hidden Flat Bands

Theoretical studies on the possible origin of room temperature ferromagnetism (ferromagnetic once crystallized) in the molecular transition metal complex, V(TCNE)_x (1.5<x<2) have been carried out. For this family, there have been no definite understanding of crystal structure so far because of sample quality, though the effective valence of V is known to be close to +2. Proposing a new crystal structure for the stoichiometric case of x=2, where the valence of each TCNE molecule is -1 and resistivity shows insulating behavior, exchange interaction among d-electrons on adjacent V atoms has been estimated based on the cluster with 3 vanadium atoms and one TCNE molecule. It turns out that Hund's coupling among d orbitals within the same V atoms and antiferromagnetic coupling between d oribitals and LUMO of TCNE (bridging V atoms) due to hybridization result in overall ferromagnetism (to be precise, ferrimagnetism). This view based on localized electrons is supplemented by the band picture, which indicates the existence of a flat band expected to lead to ferromagnetism as well consistent with the localized view. The off-stoichiometric cases (x<2), which still show ferromagnetism but semiconducting transport properties, have been analyzed as due to Anderson localization.

Why the hidden order in URu2Si2 is still hidden - one simple answer

For more than two decades, the nonmagnetic anomaly observed around 17.5 K in URu2Si2, has been investigated intensively. However, any kind of fingerprint for the lattice anomaly has not been observed. Therefore, the order has been called "the hidden order". One simple answer to why the hidden order is still hidden is presented from the space group analysis. The second order phase transition from I4/mmm (No. 139) to P4_2/mnm (No. 136) does not need any kind of lattice distortion in this system, and allows the NQR frequency at Ru-site unchanged. It is compatible with O_{xy}-type anti-ferro quadrupole ordering with Q=(0, 0, 1). The characteristics of the hidden order are discussed based on the local 5f^2 electron picture.

Realization of Strong Coupling Fixed Point in Multilevel Kondo Models

Impurity four- and six-level Kondo model, in which an ion is tunneling among four- and six-stable points and interacting with surrounding conduction electrons, are investigated by using the perturbative and numerical renormalization group methods. It is shown that purely orbital Kondo effects occur at low temperatures in these systems which are direct generalizations of the Kondo effect in the so-called two-level system. This result offers a good explanation for the enhanced and magnetically robust Sommerfeld coefficient observed in SmOs_4Sb_12 and some other filled-skutterudites.

Realization of Heavy Local Fermi Liquid and Non-Fermi Liquid in f$^2$ Crystalline-Electric-Field Singlet-Triplet Configuration

Using the numerical renormalization group method, we investigate an extended Anderson model, in which correlated electrons with the $Γ_1$(singlet)-$\Gamma4$(triplet) f$^2$ crystalline-electric-field (CEF) configuration hybridize with conduction electrons of $Γ_7$(doublet) and $Γ_8$ (quartet) under cubic $O_h$ symmetry, from a strong spin-orbit interaction limit. For the case of the parameters relevant to PrFe4P12, the system is under competition between the CEF singlet fixed point and the multichannel Kondo non-Fermi liquid fixed point arising from the quadrupolar coupling between the impurity with pseudospin 1 and the conduction electron with pseudospin 3/2 . We consider that this result reveals the origin of the heaviness of the effective mass and non-Fermi liquid behavior of the Pr- based filled skutterudite compounds.
