Field-Orientation Effect on Ferro-Quadrupole Order in PrTi2Al20

Ferro-quadrupole (FQ) order in the non-Kramers $Γ_3$ doublet system PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ has been investigated via angle-resolved measurements of the specific heat, rotational magnetocaloric effect, and entropy, under a rotating magnetic field within the $(1\bar{1}0)$ plane. The FQ transition occurring at 2 K is robust when the magnetic field $B$ is applied precisely along the $[111]$ direction. By contrast, the magnetic field of larger than 1 T tilted away from the $[111]$ direction sensitively changes the FQ transition to a crossover. The energy gap between the ground and first-excited states in the FQ order increases remarkably with the magnetic field in $B \parallel [001]$, but hardly depends on the magnetic-field strength, at least up to 5 T, in the field orientation between the $[111]$ and $[110]$ axes. These features can be reproduced by using a phenomenological model for FQ order assuming an anisotropic field-dependent interaction between quadrupoles, which has been recently proposed to explain the field-induced first-order phase transition in PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$. The present study demonstrates the great potential of the field-angle-resolved measurements for evaluating possible scenarios for multipole orders.

Superconducting Correlations in the One-Dimensional Kondo Lattice Models under Magnetic Fields

We analyze superconducting correlations in the one-dimensional Kondo lattice models with Ising anisotropy under transverse magnetic fields, using the density matrix renormalization group. For the spin-1/2 local spin model, the Ising anisotropy is introduced by the ferromagnetic Ising interaction between the local spins, while for the spin-1 model, it is taken by the single-ion anisotropy. The magnetic properties under the transverse fields for the spin-1/2 model are very similar to those for the spin-1 model [K. Suzuki and K. Hattori, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 88, 024707 (2019).]. For the superconducting correlations, we analyze various Cooper pairs within nearest-neighbor pairs including composite ones between the local spins and the electrons. We find that, for the spin-1/2 model, the superconducting correlations are highly enhanced in the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state near the Kondo-plateau phase, where the conduction electrons and the local spins are strongly coupled with a finite spin gap for the Ising axis. This is a clear contrast to the model under the longitudinal magnetic fields, where there are no noticeable superconducting correlations. Competitions between the transverse magnetic field and the Kondo singlet formation lead to this enhanced superconducting correlations. For the spin-1 model, the single-ion anisotropy suppresses the superconducting correlation and there is no noticeable enhancement. We also examine the large Kondo exchange coupling limit. For the moderate ferromagnetic Ising interaction between the local spins, we find that another type of superconducting correlation is enhanced inside the ferromagnetic phase. We discuss a possible relation between our results and reentrant superconductivity in U-based ferromagnetic superconductors under transverse magnetic fields.

Classical Monte Carlo study for antiferro quadrupole orders in a diamond lattice

We investigate antiferro quadrupole orders in a diamond lattice under magnetic fields by Monte Carlo simulations for two types of classical effective models. One is an XY model with Z_3 anisotropy, and the other is a two-component phi^4 model with a third-order anisotropy. We confirm that the universality class of the zero-field transition is that for the three-dimensional XY model. Magnetic field corresponds to a Z_3 field in the effective model, and under this field, we find that collinear and canted antiferro-quadrupole orders compete. Each phase is characterized by symmetry breaking in the sector of (sublattice Z_2)x(reflection Z_2 for the order parameter). When Z_3 anisotropy and magnetic field vary, it turns out that this system is a good playground for various multicritical points; bicritical and tetracritical points emerge in a finite field. Another important finding is about the scaling of parasitic ferro quadrupole order at the zero-field critical point. This is the secondary order parameter induced by the primary antiferro order, and its critical exponent beta'=0.815 clearly differs from the expected value that is twice the value for the primary order parameter. The corresponding correlation length exponent is also different, nu'=0.597(12). We also discuss relation of the present effective quadrupole models with the 3-state Potts model as well as implication to undertanding of orbital orders in Pr-based 1-2-20 compounds.

Classification of multipole superconductivity in multi-orbital systems and its implications

Motivated by a growing interest in multi-orbital superconductors with spin-orbit interactions, we perform the group-theoretical classification of various unconventional superconductivity emerging in symmorphic $\rm O$, $\rm D_4$, and $\rm D_6$ space groups. The generalized Cooper pairs, which we here call "multipole" superconductivity, possess spin-orbital coupled (multipole) degrees of freedom, instead of the conventional spin singlet/triplet in single-orbital systems. From the classification, we obtain the following key consequences, which have been overlooked in the long history of research in this field: (1) A superconducting gap function with $\varGamma_9\otimes\varGamma_9$ in $\rm D_6$ possesses nontrivial momentum dependence, different from the usual spin 1/2 classification. (2) Unconventional gap structure can be realized in the BCS approximation of purely local (on-site) interactions irrespective of attractive/repulsive. It implies the emergence of an electron-phonon (e-ph) driven unconventional superconductivity. (3) Reflecting symmetry of orbital basis functions, there appear not symmetry-protected but inevitable line nodes/gap minima, and thus, anisotropic $s$-wave superconductivity can be naturally explained without any competitive fluctuations.

Antiferro Quadrupole Orders in Non-Kramers Doublet Systems

We investigate antiferro quadrupole orders in systems with non-Kramers doublet ground state with total angular momentum J=4 in T_d point group symmetry. We demonstrate that a pure O_2^2 antiferro quadrupole order is impossible in general crystalline-electric field potential and should be accompanied by ferro O_2^0 quadrupole moment. The temperature and magnetic-field phase diagram is obtained by mean-field approximation of intersite quadrupole interactions and the excitation spectrum is analyzed by "spin"-wave approximations. Gapless excitations emerge at the boader of antiferro O_2^2 quadrupole phases under magnetic field. Quadrupole susceptibilities in the antiferro quadrupole ordered state exhibit unusual singularity and especially the uniform quadrupole susceptibility diverges in addition to the staggered ones. These unusual singularities are also realized at the critical field along [111] direction. We also discuss recent experimental results in PrT_2X_{20}(T=Ir, Rh, Ti, V, and X=Zn, Al).

Continuous-time Quantum Monte Carlo Approach for Impurity Anderson Models with Phonon-assisted Hybridizations

We develop a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method based on a strong-coupling expansion for Anderson impurity models with phonon-assisted hybridizations for arbitrary number of phonon modes. As a benchmark, we investigate the two-channel Anderson model with a single phonon, and numerically demonstrate that an SO(5) susceptibility composed of localized-electron charge and phonon-parity operators diverges logarithmically at the non-Fermi liquid critical point in the model, which verifies the predictions by the boundary conformal field theory[K. Hattori: Phys. Rev. B {\bf 85} (2012) 214411].

Kondo Effect of a Magnetic Ion Vibrating in a Harmonic Potential

To discuss Kondo effects of a magnetic ion vibrating in the sea of conduction electrons, a generalized Anderson model is derived. The model includes a new channel of hybridization associated with phonon emission or absorption. In the simplest case of the localized electron orbital with the s-wave symmetry, hybridization with p-waves becomes possible. Interesting interplay among the conventional s-wave Kondo effect and the p-wave one and the Yu-Anderson type Kondo effect is found and the ground state phase diagram is determined by using the numerical renormalization group method. Two different types of stable fixed points are identified and the two-channel Kondo fixed points are generically realized on the boundary.

Phonon Dynamics and Multipolar Isomorphic Transition in beta-pyrochlore KOs2O6

We investigate with a microscopic model anharmonic K-cation oscillation observed by neutron experiments in beta-pyrochlore superconductor KOs2O6, which also shows a mysterious first-order structural transition at Tp=7.5 K. We have identified a set of microscopic model parameters that successfully reproduce the observed temperature dependence and the superconducting transition temperature. Considering changes in the parameters at Tp, we can explain puzzling experimental results about electron-phonon coupling and neutron data. Our analysis demonstrates that the first-order transition is multipolar transition driven by the octupolar component of K-cation oscillations. The octupole moment does not change the symmetry and is characteristic to noncentrosymmetric K-cation potential.

Transport criticality in triangular lattice Hubbard model

We study electric transport near the Mott metal-insulator transition. Optical conductivity of the half-filled Hubbard model on a triangular lattice is calculated based on a cellular dynamical mean field theory including vertex corrections inside the cluster. By investigating the spectrum at low frequencies, we find that a Drude peak on the metallic side smoothly connects to an "ingap" peak on the insulating side. The optical weight of these peaks exhibits a critical behavior with power-law near the Mott critical end point, $|D-D^*|\propto|U-U^*|^{1/δ}$. We find that the critical exponent $1/δ$ differs from the exponents in the thermodynamics.

Meta-orbital Transition in Heavy-fermion Systems: Analysis by Dynamical Mean Field Theory and Self-consistent Renormalization Theory of Orbital Fluctuations

We investigate a two-orbital Anderson lattice model with Ising orbital intersite exchange interactions by means of dynamical mean field theory combined with the static mean field approximation of the intersite orbital interactions. Focusing on Ce-based heavy-fermion compounds, we examine the orbital crossover between the two orbital states, when the total f-electron number per site n_f is n_f ~ 1. We show that a "meta-orbital" transition, at which the occupancy of the two orbitals changes steeply, occurs when the hybridization between the ground-state f-electron orbital and conduction electrons are smaller than that between the excited f-electron orbital and conduction electrons. Near the meta-orbital critical end point, the orbital fluctuations are enhanced, and couple with the charge fluctuations. A critical theory of the meta-orbital fluctuations is also developed by applying the self-consistent renormalization theory of itinerant electron magnetism to the orbital fluctuations. The critical end point, first-order transition and crossover are described within Gaussian approximations of orbital fluctuations. We discuss the relevance of our results to CeAl2, CeCu2Si2, CeCu2Ge2 and the related compounds, which all have low-lying crystalline-electric-field excited states.

Strong coupling superconductivity mediated by three-dimensional anharmonic phonons

We investigate three dimensional anharmonic phonons in tetrahedral symmetry and superconductivity mediated by these phonons. Three dimensional anharmonic phonon spectra are calculated directly by solving Schrödinger equation and the superconducting transition temperature is determined by using the theory of strong coupling superconductivity assuming an isotropic gap function. With increasing the third order anharmonicity $b$ of the tetrahedral ion potential, we find a crossover in the energy spectrum to a quantum tunneling regime. We obtain strongly enhanced transition temperatures around the crossover point. We also investigate the anharmonic effects on the Debye-Waller factor, the phonon spectral functions and the density profile, as a function of the anharmonicity $b$ and temperature. The isomorphic first order transition observed in KOs_2O_6 is discussed in terms of the first excited state energy $Δ$, and the coupling constant $λ$ in the strong coupling theory of superconductivity. Our results suggest the decrease of $λ$ and increase of $Δ$ below the first order transition temperature. We point out that the change in the oscillation amplitude <x^2> and <xyz> characterizes this isomorphic transition. The chemical trends of the superconducting transition temperature, $λ$, and $Δ$ in the $β$-pyrochlore compounds are also discussed.

Realization of Strong Coupling Fixed Point in Multilevel Kondo Models

Impurity four- and six-level Kondo model, in which an ion is tunneling among four- and six-stable points and interacting with surrounding conduction electrons, are investigated by using the perturbative and numerical renormalization group methods. It is shown that purely orbital Kondo effects occur at low temperatures in these systems which are direct generalizations of the Kondo effect in the so-called two-level system. This result offers a good explanation for the enhanced and magnetically robust Sommerfeld coefficient observed in SmOs_4Sb_12 and some other filled-skutterudites.

Realization of Heavy Local Fermi Liquid and Non-Fermi Liquid in f$^2$ Crystalline-Electric-Field Singlet-Triplet Configuration

Using the numerical renormalization group method, we investigate an extended Anderson model, in which correlated electrons with the $Γ_1$(singlet)-$\Gamma4$(triplet) f$^2$ crystalline-electric-field (CEF) configuration hybridize with conduction electrons of $Γ_7$(doublet) and $Γ_8$ (quartet) under cubic $O_h$ symmetry, from a strong spin-orbit interaction limit. For the case of the parameters relevant to PrFe4P12, the system is under competition between the CEF singlet fixed point and the multichannel Kondo non-Fermi liquid fixed point arising from the quadrupolar coupling between the impurity with pseudospin 1 and the conduction electron with pseudospin 3/2 . We consider that this result reveals the origin of the heaviness of the effective mass and non-Fermi liquid behavior of the Pr- based filled skutterudite compounds.
