Universal whirling magnetic orders in non-Heisenberg Tsai-type quasicrystal approximants

Magnetic orders of non-Heisenberg Tsai-type 1/1 approximant crystals (ACs) in the Au-Ga-Dy system were studied through bulk magnetization, neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. The results uncovered noncoplanar, ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin configurations whirling along [111] crystallographic axis, which is analogous to those observed in the Tb- and Ho-contained counterparts. The crystal electric field excitations similar to those in the Tb-based counterpart are also observed indicating the strong Ising-like magnetic anisotropy. These comprehensive experiments and analyses have revealed the existence of a universal mechanism that stabilizes noncoplanar FM and AFM structures in non-Heisenberg Tsai-type ACs, independent of the rare-earth species (Tb, Dy, Ho); FM intra-cluster interactions and strong Ising-like anisotropy.

Structural and magnetic properties of the quasicrystal approximant Au$_{65}$Ga$_{21}$Tb$_{14}$

Magnetic properties of the quasicrystal approximant Au$_{65}$Ga$_{21}$Tb$_{14}$ were investigated by the magnetization and the neutron diffraction experiments. The temperature dependences of the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization curve indicate dominant ferromagnetic interactions, while the whirling antiferromagnetic order was found from the neutron diffraction experiments. In the antiferromagnetic phase, the magnetic moments are aligned almost perpendicular to a pseudo five-fold symmetry axis, which should correspond to the easy-axis direction of a Tb atom. The magnetic properties similar to those of Au$_{72}$Al$_{14}$Tb$_{14}$ in spite of the difference in the electron-per-atom ratio suggest the robustness of the easy-axis anisotropy against the chemical substitution of the nonmagnetic atoms.

Magnetism of Kitaev spin-liquid candidate material RuBr$_3$

The ruthenium halide $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is a promising candidate for a Kitaev spin liquid. However, the microscopic model describing $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is still debated partly because of a lack of analogue materials for $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, which prevents tracking of electronic properties as functions of controlled interaction parameters. Here, we report a successful synthesis of RuBr$_{3}$. The material RuBr$_{3}$~possesses BiI$_3$-type structure (space group: $R\overline{3}$) where Ru$^{3+}$ form an ideal honeycomb lattice. Although RuBr$_{3}$ has a negative Weiss temperature, it undergoes a zigzag antiferromagnetic transition at $T_\mathrm{N}=34$ K, as does $α$-RuCl$_{3}$. Our analyses indicate that the Kitaev and non-Kitaev interactions can be modified in ruthenium trihalides by changing the ligand sites, which provides a new platform for exploring Kitaev spin liquids.

Orbital Arrangements and Magnetic Interactions in the Quasi-One-Dimensional Cuprates ACuMoO_4(OH) (A = Na, K)

A new spin-1/2 quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet KCuMoO_4(OH) is prepared by the hydrothermal method. The crystal structures of KCuMoO_4(OH) and the already-known Na-analogue, NaCuMoO_4(OH), are isotypic, comprising chains of Cu^{2+} ions in edge-sharing CuO_4(OH)_2 octahedra. Despite the structural similarity, their magnetic properties are quite different because of the different arrangements of d_{x2-y2} orbitals carrying spins. For NaCuMoO_4(OH), d_{x2-y2} orbitals are linked by superexchange couplings via two bridging oxide ions, which gives a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction J_1 of -51 K and an antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction J_2 of 36 K in the chain. In contrast, a staggered d_{x2-y2} orbital arrangement in KCuMoO_4(OH) results in superexchange couplings via only one bridging oxide ion, which makes J_1 antiferromagnetic as large as 238 K and J_2 negligible. This comparison between the two isotypic compounds demonstrates an important role of orbital arrangements in determining the magnetic properties of cuprates.

Structural anomalies and short-range magnetic correlations in the orbitally degenerated system Sr$_2$VO$_4$

We report on the electronic ground state of a layered perovskite vanadium oxide Sr$_2$VO$_4$ studied by the combined use of synchrotron radiation x-ray diffraction (SR-XRD) and muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) techniques, where $μ$SR measurements were extended down to 30 mK. We found an intermediate orthorhombic phase between $T_{\rm c2} \sim$~130 K and $T_{\rm c1} \sim$~100 K, whereas a tetragonal phase appears for $T > T_{\rm c2}$ and $T < T_{\rm c1}$. The absence of long-range magnetic order was confirmed by $μ$SR at the reentrant tetragonal phase below $T_{\rm c1}$, where the relative enhancement in the $c$-axis length versus that of the $a$-axis length was observed. However, no clear indication of the lowering of the tetragonal lattice symmetry with superlattice modulation, which is expected in the orbital order state with superstructure of $d_{yz}$ and $d_{zx}$ orbitals, was observed by SR-XRD below $T_{\rm c1}$. Instead, it was inferred from $μ$SR that a magnetic state developed below $T_{\rm c0} \sim$~10 K, which was characterized by the highly inhomogeneous and fluctuating local magnetic fields down to 30 mK. We argue that the anomalous magnetic ground state below $T_{\rm c0}$ originates from the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations.

NaCuMoO_4(OH) as a Candidate Frustrated J_1-J_2 Chain Quantum Magnet

In a frustrated J_1-J_2 chain with the nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interaction J_1 and the next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction J_2, novel magnetic states such as a spin-nematic state are theoretically expected. However, they have been rarely examined in experiments because of the difficulty in obtaining suitable model compounds. We show here that the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet NaCuMoO_4(OH), which comprises edge-sharing CuO_2 chains, is a good candidate J_1-J_2 chain antiferromagnet. The exchange interactions are estimated as J_1 = - 51 K and J_2 = 36 K by comparing the magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and magnetization data with the data obtained using calculations by the exact diagonalization method. High-field magnetization measurements at 1.3 K show a saturation above 26 T with little evidence of a spin nematic state expected just below the saturation field, which is probably due to smearing effects caused by thermal fluctuations and the polycrystalline nature of the sample.

Anisotropic spin fluctuations in the quasi one-dimensional frustrated magnet LiCuVO_4

We report results of NMR experiments on a single crystal of the quasi one-dimensional frustrated magnet LiCuVO_4. The NMR spectra of ^7Li and ^{51}V nuclei indicate a helical spin order in a magnetic field of 4 T with the helical spin plane perpendicular to the field and a spin-density-wave (SDW) order at 10 T with modulation in the magnitude of the moments aligned along the field, in agreement with earlier reports. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 at ^{51}V nuclei, which is selectively coupled to the transverse spin fluctuations perpendicular to the field, shows a pronounced peak near the helical ordering temperature in the field of 4 T applied along the a-axis. In the field of 10 T, however, such a peak is absent. Instead 1/T_1 at ^7Li nuclei probing longitudinal spin fluctuations shows divergent behavior towards the SDW ordering temperature. These results are qualitatively consistent with the theoretical description that the SDW correlation is due to bound magnon pairs, which produce an energy gap in the transverse spin excitation spectrum.
