On universal-homogeneous hyperbolic graphs and spaces and their isometry groups

The Urysohn space is the unique separable metric space that is universal and homogeneous for finite metric spaces, i.e., it embeds any finite metric space any isometry between finite subspaces extends to an isometry of the whole space. We here consider the existence of a universal-homogeneous hyperbolic space. We show that for $δ>0$ there is no $δ$-hyperbolic space which is universal and homogeneous in the above sense for all finite $δ$-hpyerbolic spaces. We then show that for any $δ\geq 0$ and any countable class $\mathcal{C}$ of $δ$-hyperbolic spaces with countably many distinguished $δ$-closed subspaces there exists a $δ$-hyperbolic metric space $\mathbb{H}_\mathcal{C}$ such that every $X\in \mathcal{C}$ can be embedded into $\mathbb{H}_\mathcal{C}$ as a $δ$-closed subspace and any isometry between distinguished $δ$-closed subspaces extends to an isometry of $\mathbb{H}_\mathcal{C}$. If $\mathcal{C}$ consists of $δ$-hyperbolic geodesic spaces, then $\mathbb{H}_\mathcal{C}$ contains the quasi-tree of spaces as defined by Bestvina et al.. For $\mathcal{C}_δ$ the class of all finite $δ$-hyperbolic spaces with rational distances or the class of finite $δ$-hyperbolic graphs, the limit $\mathbb{H}_δ$ is a $δ$-hyperbolic space (or graph, respectively) universal for all finite $δ$-hyperbolic spaces with rational distances (or finite $δ$-hyperbolic graphs) and such that any isometry between $δ$-closed subspaces extends to an isometry of $\mathbb{H}_δ$. We show that the isometry group of $\mathbb{H}_δ$ does not contain elements of bounded displacement and has no dense conjugacy class.

On weak Fraisse limits

Using the natural action of $S_\infty$ we show that a countable hereditary class $\mathcal C$ of finitely generated structures has the joint embedding property (JEP) and the weak amalgamation property (WAP) if and only if there is a structure $M$ whose isomorphism type is comeager in the space of all countable, infinitely generated structures with age in $\mathcal C$. In this case, $M$ is the weak Fraïssé limit of $\mathcal C$. This applies in particular to countable structures with generic automorphisms and recovers a result by Kechris and Rosendal [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., 2007].

Universality vs Genericity and $C_4$-free graphs

We show that the existence of a universal structure implies the existence of a generic structure for any approximable class $\mathcal{C}$ of countable structures. We also show that the converse is not true. As a consequence, we provide several new examples of weak Fraïssé classes of finite graphs. Finally, we show that the class of all countable $C_4$-free graphs does not contain a generic structure, strengthening a result of A. Hajnal and J. Pach.

Describing finite groups by short first-order sentences

We say that a class of finite structures for a finite first-order signature is $r$-compressible if each structure $G$ in the class has a first-order description of size at most $O(r(|G|))$. We show that the class of finite simple groups is $\log$-compressible, and the class of all finite groups is $\log^3$-compressible. As a corollary we obtain that the class of all finite transitive permutation groups is $\log^3$-compressible. The result relies on the classification of finite simple groups, the bi-interpretability of the twisted Ree groups with finite difference fields, the existence of profinite presentations with few relators, and group cohomology. We also indicate why the results are close to optimal.

Infinite sharply multiply transitive groups

The finite sharply $2$-transitive groups were classified by Zassenhaus in the 1930's. They essentially all look like the group of affine linear transformations $x\mapsto ax+b$ for some field (or at least near-field) $K$. However, the question remained open whether the same is true for infinite sharply $2$-transitive groups. There has been extensive work on the structures associated to such groups indicating that Zassenhaus' results might extend might extend to the infinite setting. For many specific classes of groups, like Lie groups, linear groups, or groups definable in o-minimal it was indeed proved that all examples inside the given class arise in this way as affine groups. However, it recently turned out that the reason for the lack of a general proof was the fact that there are plenty of sharply $2$-transitive groups which do not arise from fields or near-fields! In fact, it is not too hard to construct concrete examples (see below). In this note, we survey general sharply $n$-transitive groups and describe how to construct examples not arising from fields.

Simplicity of the automorphism groups of some Hrushovski constructions

We show that the automorphism groups of certain countable structures obtained using the Hrushovski amalgamation method are simple groups. The structures we consider are the 'uncollapsed' structures of infinite Morley rank obtained by the ab initio construction and the (unstable) omega-categorical pseudoplanes. The simplicity of the automorphism groups of these follows from results which generalize work of Lascar and of Tent and Ziegler.

On groups and fields interpretable in torsion-free hyperbolic groups

We prove that the generic type of a non-cyclic torsion-free hyperbolic group G is foreign to any interpretable abelian group, hence also to any interpretable field. This result depends, among other things, on the definable simplicity of a non-cyclic torsion-free hyperbolic group, and we take the opportunity to give a proof of the latter using Sela's description of imaginaries in torsion-free hyperbolic groups. We also use the description of imaginaries to prove that if F is a free group of rank > 2 then no orbit of a finite tuple from F under Aut(F) is definable.

Pseudofinite groups with NIP theory and definability in finite simple groups

We show that any pseudofinite group with NIP theory and with a finite upper bound on the length of chains of centralisers is soluble-by-finite. In particular, any NIP rosy pseudofinite group is soluble-by-finite. This generalises, and shortens the proof of, an earlier result for stable pseudofinite groups. An example is given of an NIP pseudofinite group which is not soluble-by-finite. However, if C is a class of finite groups such that all infinite ultraproducts of members of C have NIP theory, then there is a bound on the index of the soluble radical of any member of C. We also survey some ways in which model theory gives information on families of finite simple groups, particularly concerning products of images of word maps.

A Maslov cocycle for unitary groups

We introduce a 2-cocycle for symplectic and skew-hermitian hyperbolic groups over arbitrary fields and skew fields, with values in the Witt group of hermitian forms. This cocycle has good functorial properties: it is natural under extension of scalars and stable, so it can be viewed as a universal 2-dimensional characteristic class for these groups. Over R and C, it coincides with the first Chern class.
