Genericity of sublinearly Morse directions in CAT(0) spaces and the Teichmüller space

We show that the sublinearly Morse directions in the visual boundary of a rank-1 CAT(0) space with a geometric group action are generic in several commonly studied senses of the word, namely with respect to Patterson-Sullivan measures and stationary measures for random walks. We deduce that the sublinearly Morse boundary is a model of the Poisson boundary for finitely supported random walks on groups acting geometrically on rank-1 CAT (0) spaces. We prove an analogous result for mapping class group actions on Teichmüller space. Our main technical tool is a criterion, valid in any unique geodesic metric space, that says that any geodesic ray with sufficiently many (in a statistical sense) strongly contracting segments is sublinearly contracting.

Sublinearly Morse Boundary I: CAT(0) Spaces

To every Gromov hyperbolic space X one can associate a space at infinity called the Gromov boundary of X. Gromov showed that quasi-isometries of hyperbolic metric spaces induce homeomorphisms on their boundaries, thus giving rise to a well-defined notion of the boundary of a hyperbolic group. Croke and Kleiner showed that the visual boundary of non-positively curved (CAT(0)) groups is not well-defined, since quasi-isometric CAT(0) spaces can have non-homeomorphic boundaries. For any sublinear function $κ$, we consider a subset of the visual boundary called the $κ$-Morse boundary and show that it is QI-invariant and metrizable. This is to say, the $κ$-Morse boundary of a CAT(0) group is well-defined. In the case of Right-angled Artin groups, it is shown in the Appendix that the Poisson boundary of random walks is naturally identified with the $\sqrt{t \log t}$--boundary.

Two results on end spaces of infinite type surfaces

We answer two questions about the topology of end spaces of infinite type surfaces and the action of the mapping class group that have appeared in the literature. First, we give examples of infinite type surfaces with end spaces that are not self-similar, but a unique maximal type of end, either a singleton or Cantor set. Secondly, we use an argument of Tsankov to show that the "local complexity" relation $\preccurlyeq$ on end types gives an equivalence relation that agrees with the notion of being locally homeomorphic.

Big mapping class groups with hyperbolic actions: classification and applications

We address the question of determining which mapping class groups of infinite-type surfaces admit nonelementary continuous actions on hyperbolic spaces. More precisely, let $Σ$ be a connected, orientable surface of infinite type with tame endspace whose mapping class group is generated by a coarsely bounded subset. We prove that $\mathrm{Map}(Σ)$ admits a continuous nonelementary action on a hyperbolic space if and only if $Σ$ contains a finite-type subsurface which intersects all its homeomorphic translates. When $Σ$ contains such a nondisplaceable subsurface $K$ of finite type, the hyperbolic space we build is constructed from the curve graphs of $K$ and its homeomorphic translates via a construction of Bestvina, Bromberg and Fujiwara. Our construction has several applications: first, the second bounded cohomology of $\mathrm{Map}(Σ)$ contains an embedded $\ell^1$; second, using work of Dahmani, Guirardel and Osin, we deduce that $\mathrm{Map}(Σ)$ contains nontrivial normal free subgroups (while it does not if $Σ$ has no nondisplaceable subsurface of finite type), has uncountably many quotients and is SQ-universal.

Expected covering radius of a translation surface

A translation structure equips a Riemann surface with a singular flat metric. Not much is known about the shape of a random translation surface. We compute an upper bound on the expected value of the covering radius of a translation surface in any stratum H_1(kappa). The covering radius of a translation surface is the largest radius of an immersed disk. In the case of the stratum H_1(2g-2) of translation surfaces of genus g with one singularity, the covering radius is comparable to the diameter. We show that the expected covering radius of a surface is bounded above by a uniform multiple of ((log g)/g)^(1/2), independent of the stratum. This is smaller than what one would expect by analogy from the result of Mirzakhani about the expected diameter of a hyperbolic metric on a Riemann surface. To prove our result, we need an estimate for the volume of the thin part of H_1(kappa) which is given in the appendix.

Quasi-geodesics in Out(F_n) and their shadows in sub-factors

We study the behaviour of quasi-geodesics in Out(F_n). Given an element f in Out(F_n) there are several natural paths connecting the origin to f in Out(F_n); for example, paths associated to sequences of Stallings folds and paths induced by the shadow of greedy folding paths in Outer Space. We show that none of these paths is, in general, a quasi-geodesic in Out(F_n). In fact, in contrast with the mapping class group setting, we construct examples where any quasi-geodesic in Out(F_n) connecting f to the origin will have to back-track in some free factor of F_n.

Coarse and fine geometry of the Thurston metric

We study the geometry of the Thurston metric on the Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}(S)$ of hyperbolic structures on a surface $S$. Some of our results on the coarse geometry of this metric apply to arbitrary surfaces $S$ of finite type; however, we focus particular attention on the case where the surface is a once-punctured torus, $S_{1,1}$. In that case, our results provide a detailed picture of the infinitesimal, local, and global behavior of the geodesics of the Thurston metric, as well as an analogue of Royden's theorem.

Uniform growth rate

In an evolutionary system in which the rules of mutation are local in nature, the number of possible outcomes after $m$ mutations is an exponential function of $m$ but with a rate that depends only on the set of rules and not the size of the original object. We apply this principle to find a uniform upper bound for the growth rate of certain groups including the mapping class group. We also find a uniform upper bound for the growth rate of the number of homotopy classes of triangulations of an oriented surface that can be obtained from a given triangulation using $m$ diagonal flips.

Digraphs and cycle polynomials for free-by-cyclic groups

Let $ϕ\in \mbox{Out}(F_n)$ be a free group outer automorphism that can be represented by an expanding, irreducible train-track map. The automorphism $ϕ$ determines a free-by-cyclic group $Γ=F_n \rtimes_ϕ\mathbb Z,$ and a homomorphism $α\in H^1(Γ; \mathbb Z)$. By work of Neumann, Bieri-Neumann-Strebel and Dowdall-Kapovich-Leininger, $α$ has an open cone neighborhood $\mathcal A$ in $H^1(Γ;\mathbb R)$ whose integral points correspond to other fibrations of $Γ$ whose associated outer automorphisms are themselves representable by expanding irreducible train-track maps. In this paper, we define an analog of McMullen's Teichmüller polynomial that computes the dilatations of all outer automorphism in $\mathcal A$.

Mapping tori of small dilatation irreducible train-track maps

We prove that for every P there is a bound B depending only on P so that the mapping torus of every P--small irreducible train-track map can be obtained by surgery from one of B mapping tori. We show that given an integer P>0 there is a bound $M$ depending only on P, so that there exists a presentation of the fundamental group of the mapping torus of a P--small irreducible train-track map with less than M generators and M relations.

On hyperbolicity of free splitting and free factor complexes

We show how to derive hyperbolicity of the free factor complex of $F_N$ from the Handel-Mosher proof of hyperbolicity of the free splitting complex of $F_N$, thus obtaining an alternative proof of a theorem of Bestvina-Feighn. We also show that under the natural map $τ$ from the free splitting complex to free factor complex, a geodesic $[x,y]$ maps to a path that is uniformly Hausdorff-close to a geodesic $[τ(x),τ(y)]$ .

Bounded combinatorics and the Lipschitz metric on Teichmüller space

Considering the Teichmüller space of a surface equipped with Thurston's Lipschitz metric, we study geodesic segments whose endpoints have bounded combinatorics. We show that these geodesics are cobounded, and that the closest-point projection to these geodesics is strongly contracting. Consequently, these geodesics are stable. Our main tool is to show that one can get a good estimate for the Lipschitz distance by considering the length ratio of finitely many curves.

Grafting rays fellow travel Teichmuller geodesics

Given a measured geodesic lamination on a hyperbolic surface, grafting the surface along multiples of the lamination defines a path in Teichmuller space, called the grafting ray. We show that every grafting ray, after reparametrization, is a Teichmuller quasi-geodesic and stays in a bounded neighborhood of a Teichmuller geodesic. As part of our approach, we show that grafting rays have controlled dependence on the starting point. That is, for any measured geodesic lamination Lambda, the map of Teichmuller space which is defined by grafting along Lambda is L-Lipschitz with respect to the Teichmuller metric, where L is a universal constant. This Lipschitz property follows from an extension of grafting to an open neighborhood of Teichmuller space in the space of quasi-Fuchsian groups.

Divergence of geodesics in Teichmuller space and the mapping class group

We show that both Teichmuller space (with the Teichmuller metric) and the mapping class group (with a word metric) have geodesic divergence that is intermediate between the linear rate of flat spaces and the exponential rate of hyperbolic spaces. For every two geodesic rays in Teichmuller space, we find that their divergence is at most quadratic. Furthermore, this estimate is shown to be sharp via examples of pairs of rays with exactly quadratic divergence. The same statements are true for geodesic rays in the mapping class group. We explicitly describe efficient paths "near infinity" in both spaces.

Hyperbolicity in Teichmüller space

We review and organize some results describing the behavior of a Teichmüller geodesic and draw several applications: 1) We show that Teichmüller geodesics do not back track. 2) We show that a Teichmüller geodesic segment whose endpoints are in the thick part has the fellow travelling property. This fails when the endpoints are not necessarily in the thick part. 3) We show that if an edge of a Teichmüller geodesic triangle passes through the thick part, then it is close to one of the other egdes.

Length spectra and degeneration of flat metrics

In this paper we consider flat metrics (semi-translation structures) on surfaces of finite type. There are two main results. The first is a complete description of when a set of simple closed curves is spectrally rigid, that is, when the length vector determines a metric among the class of flat metrics. Secondly, we give an embedding into the space of geodesic currents and use this to get a boundary for the space of flat metrics. The geometric interpretation is that flat metrics degenerate to "mixed structures" on the surface: part flat metric and part measured foliation.

A characterization of short curves of a Teichmueller geodesic

We provide a combinatorial condition characterizing curves that are short along a Teichmueller geodesic. This condition is closely related to the condition provided by Minsky for curves in a hyperbolic 3-manifold to be short. We show that short curves in a hyperbolic manifold homeomorphic to S x R are also short in the corresponding Teichmueller geodesic, and we provide examples demonstrating that the converse is not true.
