Factoring periodic maps into Dehn twists

Let $\text{Mod}(S_g)$ be the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface $S_g$ of genus $g \geq 1$. In this paper, we develop various methods for factoring periodic mapping classes into Dehn twists, up to conjugacy. As applications, we develop methods for factoring certain roots of Dehn twists as words in Dehn twists. We will also show the existence of conjugates of periodic maps of order $4g$ and $4g+2$, for $g\geq 2$, whose product is pseudo-Anosov.

Metacyclic actions on surfaces

Let $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ be the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface $S_g$ of genus $g\geq 2$. In this paper, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions under which two torsion elements in $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ will have conjugates that generate a finite metacyclic subgroup of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$. This yields a complete solution to the problem of liftability of periodic mapping classes under finite cyclic covers. As applications of the main result, we show that $4g$ is a realizable upper bound on the order of a non-split metacyclic action on $S_g$ and this bound is realized by the action of a dicyclic group. Moreover, we give a complete characterization of the dicyclic subgroups of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ up to a certain equivalence that we will call weak conjugacy. Furthermore, we show that every periodic mapping class in a non-split metacyclic subgroup of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ is reducible. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions under which a non-split metacyclic action on $S_g$ factors via a split metacyclic action. Finally, we provide a complete classification of the weak conjugacy classes of the finite non-split metacyclic subgroups of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_{10})$ and $\mathrm{Mod}(S_{11})$.

Roots of Dehn twists about multicurves

A \textit{multicurve} $\C$ on a closed orientable surface is defined to be a finite collection of disjoint non-isotopic essential simple closed curves. The Dehn twist $t_{\C}$ about $\C$ is the product of the Dehn twists about the individual curves. In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a root of such a Dehn twist, that is, a homeomorphism $h$ such that $h^n = t_{\C}$. We give combinatorial data that corresponds to such roots, and use it to determine upper bounds for $n$. Finally, we classify all such roots up to conjugacy for surfaces of genus 3 and 4.

Fractional powers of Dehn twists about nonseparating curves

Let $S_g$ be a closed orientable surface of genus $g \geq 2$ and $C$ a simple closed nonseparating curve in $F$. Let $t_C$ denote a left handed Dehn twist about $C$. A \textit{fractional power} of $t_C$ of \textit{exponent} $\fraction{\ell}{n}$ is an $h \in \Mod(S_g)$ such that $h^n = t_C^{\ell}$. Unlike a root of a $t_C$, a fractional power $h$ can exchange the sides of $C$. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of both side-exchanging and side-preserving fractional powers. We show in the side-preserving case that if $\gcd(\ell,n) = 1$, then $h$ will be isotopic to the $\ell^{th}$ power of an $n^{th}$ root of $t_C$ and that $n \leq 2g+1$. In general, we show that $n \leq 4g$, and that side-preserving fractional powers of exponents $\fraction{2g}{2g+2}$ and $\fraction{2g}{4g}$ always exist. For a side-exchanging fractional power of exponent $\fraction{\ell}{2n}$, we show that $2n \geq 2g+2$, and that side-exchanging fractional powers of exponent $\fraction{2g+2}{4g+2}$ and $\fraction{4g+1}{4g+2}$ always exist. We give a complete listing of certain side-preserving and side-exchanging fractional powers on $S_5$.

Roots of Dehn twists about separating curves

Let $C$ be a curve in a closed orientable surface $F$ of genus $g \geq 2$ that separates $F$ into subsurfaces $\widetilde {F_i}$ of genera $g_i$, for $i = 1,2$. We study the set of roots in $\Mod(F)$ of the Dehn twist $t_C$ about $C$. All roots arise from pairs of $C_{n_i}$-actions on the $\widetilde{F_i}$, where $n=\lcm(n_1,n_2)$ is the degree of the root, that satisfy a certain compatibility condition. The $C_{n_i}$ actions are of a kind that we call nestled actions, and we classify them using tuples that we call data sets. The compatibility condition can be expressed by a simple formula, allowing a classification of all roots of $t_C$ by compatible pairs of data sets. We use these data set pairs to classify all roots for $g = 2$ and $g = 3$. We show that there is always a root of degree at least $2g^2+2g$, while $n \leq 4g^2+2g$. We also give some additional applications.
