An Averaging Formula for Nielsen numbers on Infra-Solvmanifolds

Until now only for special classes of infra-solvmanifolds, namely infra-nilmanifolds and infra-solvmanifolds of type (R), there was a formula available for computing the Nielsen number of a self-map on those manifolds. In this paper, we provide a general averaging formula which works for all self-maps on all possible infra-solvmanifolds and which reduces to the old formulas in the case of infra-nilmanifolds or infra-solvmanifolds of type (R). Moreover, when viewing an infra-solvmanifold as a polynomial manifold, we recall that any map is homotopic to a polynomial map and we show how our formula can be translated in terms of the Jacobian of that polynomial map.

On the rationality of the Nielsen zeta function for maps on solvmanifolds

In [3,9], the Nielsen zeta function Nf(z)N_f(z) has been shown to be rational if ff is a self-map of an infra-solvmanifold of type (R). It is, however, still unknown whether Nf(z)N_f(z) is rational for self-maps on solvmanifolds. In this paper, we prove that Nf(z)N_f(z) is rational if ff is a self-map of a (compact) solvmanifold of dimension ≤5\leq 5. In any dimension, we show additionally that Nf(z)N_f(z) is rational if ff is a self-map of an NR{\cal NR}-solvmanifold or a solvmanifold with fundamental group of the form Zn⋊Z{\mathbb Z}^n\rtimes{\mathbb Z}.

Rigidity results for Lie algebras admitting a post-Lie algebra structure

We study rigidity questions for pairs of Lie algebras (g,n)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n}) admitting a post-Lie algebra structure. We show that if g\mathfrak{g} is semisimple and n\mathfrak{n} is arbitrary, then we have rigidity in the sense that g\mathfrak{g} and n\mathfrak{n} must be isomorphic. The proof uses a result on the decomposition of a Lie algebra g=s1∔s2\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{s}_1\dotplus \mathfrak{s}_2 as the direct vector space sum of two semisimple subalgebras. We show that g\mathfrak{g} must be semisimple and hence isomorphic to the direct Lie algebra sum g≅s1⊕s2\mathfrak{g}\cong \mathfrak{s}_1\oplus \mathfrak{s}_2. This solves some open existence questions for post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras (g,n)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n}). We prove additional existence results for pairs (g,n)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n}), where g\mathfrak{g} is complete, and for pairs, where g\mathfrak{g} is reductive with 11-dimensional center and n\mathfrak{n} is solvable or nilpotent.

The Reidemeister spectrum of 2-step nilpotent groups determined by graphs

In this paper we study the Reidemeister spectrum of 2-step nilpotent groups associated to graphs. We develop three methods, based on the structure of the graph, that can be used to determine the Reidemeister spectrum of the associated group in terms of the Reidemeister spectra of groups associated to smaller graphs. We illustrate our methods for several families of graphs, including all the groups associated to a graph with at most four vertices. We also apply our results in the context of topological fixed point theory for nilmanifolds.

Post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras

We study post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras (g,n)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n}), motivated by nil-affine actions of Lie groups. We prove existence results for such structures depending on the interplay of the algebraic structures of g\mathfrak{g} and n\mathfrak{n}. We consider the classes of simple, semisimple, reductive, perfect, solvable, nilpotent, abelian and unimodular Lie algebras. Furthermore we consider commutative post-Lie algebra structures on perfect Lie algebras. Using Lie algebra cohomology we prove that such structures are trivial in several cases. We classify commutative structures on low-dimensional Lie algebras, and study the case of nilpotent Lie algebras.

Crystallographic actions on contractible algebraic manifolds

We study properly discontinuous and cocompact actions of a discrete subgroup ΓΓ of an algebraic group GG on a contractible algebraic manifold XX. We suppose that this action comes from an algebraic action of GG on XX such that a maximal reductive subgroup of GG fixes a point. When the real rank of any simple subgroup of GG is at most one or the dimension of XX is at most three, we show that ΓΓ is virtually polycyclic. When ΓΓ is virtually polycyclic, we show that ΓΓ is virtually polycyclic. When ΓΓ is virtually polycyclic, we show that the action reduces to a NIL-affine crystallographic action. As applications, we prove that the generalized Auslander conjecture for NIL-affine actions holds up to dimension six and give a new proof of the fact that every virtually polycyclic group admits a NIL-affine crystallographic action.

The R∞R_\infty property for nilpotent quotients of surface groups

It is well known that when GG is the fundamental group of a closed surface of negative Euler characteristic, it has the R∞R_{\infty} property. In this work we compute the least integer cc, {\it called the R∞R_{\infty}-nilpotency degree of GG}, such that the group G/γc+1(G)G/ γ_{c+1}(G) has the R∞R_{\infty} property, where γr(G)γ_r(G) is the rr-th term of the lower central series of GG. We show that c=4c=4 for GG the fundamental group of any orientable closed surface SgS_g of genus g>1g>1. For the fundamental group of the non-orientable surface NgN_g (the connected sum of gg projective planes) this number is 2(g−1)2(g-1) (when g>2g>2). A similar concept is introduced using the derived series G(r)G^{(r)} of a group GG. Namely {\it the R∞R_{\infty}-solvability degree of GG}, which is the least integer cc such that the group G/G(c)G/G^{(c)} has the R∞R_{\infty} property. We show that the fundamental group of an orientable closed surface SgS_g has R∞R_{\infty}-solvability degree 22.

A formula for the second cohomology of two-step nilpotent groups

In [5], the notion of polynomial cocycles is used to give an expression for the second cohomology of T-groups with coefficients in a torsion-free nilpotent module. We make this expression concrete in the case of a T-group G of nilpotency class <=2 and coefficients in a trivial G-module, using a Lie algebra associated to the group. This approach allows us to construct explicit cocycles representing the elements of the second cohomology group.

Existence of Anosov diffeomorphisms on infra-nilmanifolds modeled on free nilpotent Lie groups

An infra-nilmanifold is a manifold which is constructed as a quotient space Γ\GΓ\backslash G of a simply connected nilpotent Lie group GG, where ΓΓ is a discrete group acting properly discontinuously and cocompactly on GG via so called affine maps. The manifold Γ\GΓ\backslash G is said to be modeled on the Lie group GG. This class of manifolds is conjectured to be the only class of closed manifolds allowing an Anosov diffeomorphism. However, it is far from obvious which of these infra--nilmanifolds actually do admit an Anosov diffeomorphism. In this paper we completely solve this question for infra-nilmanifolds modeled on a free cc--step nilpotent Lie group.

Expanding maps and non-trivial self-covers on infra-nilmanifolds

Every expanding map on a closed manifold is topologically conjugate to an expanding map on an infra-nilmanifold, but not every infra-nilmanifold admits an expanding map. In this article we give a complete algebraic characterization of the infra-nilmanifolds admitting an expanding map. We show that, just as in the case of Anosov diffeomorphisms, the existence of an expanding map depends only on the rational holonomy representation of the infra-nilmanifold. A similar characterization is also given for the infra-nilmanifolds with a non-trivial self-cover, which corresponds to determining which almost-Bieberbach groups are co-Hopfian. These results provide many new examples of infra-nilmanifolds without non-trivial self-covers or expanding maps.

The $R_{\infty} property for abelian groups

It is well known there is no finitely generated abelian group which has the R∞R_\infty property. We will show that also many non-finitely generated abelian groups do not have the R∞R_\infty property, but this does not hold for all of them. In fact we construct an uncountable number of infinite countable abelian groups which do have the R∞R_{\infty} property. We also construct an abelian group such that the cardinality of the Reidemeister classes is uncountable for any automorphism of that group. 8 pages, no figures

Nielsen zeta functions for maps on infra-nilmanifolds are rational

In this paper we will show that for any map ff on an infra-nilmanifold, the Nielsen number N(f)N(f) of this map is either equal to ∣L(f)∣|L(f)|, where L(f)L(f) is the Lefschetz number of that map, or equal to the expression ∣L(f)−L(f+)∣|L(f)-L(f_+)|, where f+f_+ is a lift of ff to a 2-fold covering of that infra-nilmanifold. By exploiting the exact nature of this relationship for all powers of ff, we prove that the Nielsen dynamical zeta function for a map on an infra-nilmanifold is always a rational function.

A seven-term exact sequence for the cohomology of a group extension

In this paper, we construct a seven-term exact sequence involving the cohomology groups of a group extension. Although the existence of such a sequence can be derived using spectral sequence arguments, there is little knowledge about some of the maps occuring in the sequence, limiting its usefulness. Here we present a construction using only very elementary tools, always related to the notion of conjugation in a group. This results in a complete and usable description of all the maps, which we describe both on cocycle level as on the level of the interpretations of low dimensional cohomology groups (e.g. group extensions).

preprint2012arXiv

An explicit seven-term exact sequence for the cohomology of a Lie algebra extension

We construct a seven-term exact sequence involving low degree cohomology spaces of a Lie algebra $\Lg$, an ideal $\Lh$ of $\Lg$ and the quotient $\Lg / \Lh$ with coefficients in a $\Lg$-module. The existence of such a sequence follows from the Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence associated to the Lie algebra extension. However, some of the maps occurring in this induced sequence are not always explicitly known or easy to describe. In this article, we give alternative maps that yield an exact sequence of the same form, making use of the interpretations of the low-dimensional cohomology spaces in terms of derivations, extensions etc. The maps are constructed using elementary methods. Although we don't know whether the new maps coincide with the ones induced by the spectral sequence, the alternative sequence can certainly be useful, especially since we include straight-forward cocycle descriptions of the constructed maps.

Affine actions on Lie groups and post-Lie algebra structures

We introduce post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras $(\Lg,\Ln)$ defined on a fixed vector space VV. Special cases are LR-structures and pre-Lie algebra structures on Lie algebras. We show that post-Lie algebra structures naturally arise in the study of NIL-affine actions on nilpotent Lie groups. We obtain several results on the existence of post-Lie algebra structures, in terms of the algebraic structure of the two Lie algebras $\Lg$ and $\Ln$. One result is, for example, that if there exists a post-Lie algebra structure on $(\Lg,\Ln)$, where $\Lg$ is nilpotent, then $\Ln$ must be solvable. Furthermore special cases and examples are given. This includes a classification of all complex, two-dimensional post-Lie algebras.

Post-Lie algebra structures and generalized derivations of semisimple Lie algebras

We study post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras (g,n), and prove existence results for the case that one of the Lie algebras is semisimple. For semisimple g and solvable n we show that there exist no post-Lie algebra structures on (g,n). For semisimple n and certain solvable g we construct canonical post-Lie algebra structures. On the other hand we prove that there are no post-Lie algebra structures for semisimple n and solvable, unimodular g. We also determine the generalized $(\al,\be,\ga)$-derivations of n in the semisimple case. As an application we classify post-Lie algebra structures induced by generalized derivations.

What an infra-nilmanifold endomorphism really should be

Infra-nilmanifold endomorphisms were introduced in the late sixties. They play a very crucial role in dynamics, especially when studying expanding maps and Anosov diffeomorphisms. However, in this note we will explain that the two main results in this area are based on a false result and that although we can repair one of these two theorems, there remains doubt on the correctness of the other one. Moreover, we will also show that the notion of an infra-nilmanifold endomorphism itself has not always been interpreted in the same way. Finally, we define a slightly more general concept of the notion of an infra-nilmanifold endomorphism and explain why this is really the right concept to work with.
