Affine cohomology classes for filiform Lie algebras

We classify the cohomology spaces $H^2(\mathfrak{g},K)$ for all filiform nilpotent Lie algebras of dimension $n\le 11$ over $K$ and for certain classes of algebras of dimension $n\ge 12$. The result is applied to the determination of affine cohomology classes $[ω]\in H^2(\mathfrak{g},K)$. We prove the general result that the existence of an affine cohomology class implies an affine structure of canonical type on $\mathfrak{g}$, hence a canonical left-invariant affine structure on the corresponding nilpotent Lie group. For certain filiform algebras the absence of an affine cohomology class implies the nonexistence of any affine structure. Of particular interest are algebras $\mathfrak{g}$ with minimal Betti numbers $b_1(\mathfrak{g})=b_2(\mathfrak{g})=2$.

Estimates on binomial sums of partition functions

Let $p(n)$ denote the partition function and define $p(n,k)=\sum_{j=0}^{k}\binom{n-j}{k-j}p(j)$ where $p(0)=1$. We prove that $p(n,k)$ is unimodal and satisfies $p(n,k) < \frac{2.825}{\sqrt{n}}\, 2^n $ for fixed $n\ge 1$ and all $1\le k\le n$. This result has an interesting application: the minimal dimension of a faithful module for a $k$-step nilpotent Lie algebra of dimension $n$ is bounded by $p(n,k)$ and hence by $\frac{3}{\sqrt{n}}\, 2^n $, independently of $k$. So far only the bound $n^{n-1}$ was known. We will also prove that $p(n,n-1)<\sqrt{n}\exp(π\sqrt{2n/3})$ for $n\ge 1$ and $p(n-1,n-1)<\exp (π\sqrt{2n/3} )$.

Rigidity results for Lie algebras admitting a post-Lie algebra structure

We study rigidity questions for pairs of Lie algebras $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n})$ admitting a post-Lie algebra structure. We show that if $\mathfrak{g}$ is semisimple and $\mathfrak{n}$ is arbitrary, then we have rigidity in the sense that $\mathfrak{g}$ and $\mathfrak{n}$ must be isomorphic. The proof uses a result on the decomposition of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{s}_1\dotplus \mathfrak{s}_2$ as the direct vector space sum of two semisimple subalgebras. We show that $\mathfrak{g}$ must be semisimple and hence isomorphic to the direct Lie algebra sum $\mathfrak{g}\cong \mathfrak{s}_1\oplus \mathfrak{s}_2$. This solves some open existence questions for post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n})$. We prove additional existence results for pairs $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n})$, where $\mathfrak{g}$ is complete, and for pairs, where $\mathfrak{g}$ is reductive with $1$-dimensional center and $\mathfrak{n}$ is solvable or nilpotent.

Semisimple decompositions of Lie algebras and prehomogeneous modules

We study {\em disemisimple} Lie algebras, i.e., Lie algebras which can be written as a vector space sum of two semisimple subalgebras. We show that a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ is disemisimple if and only if its solvable radical coincides with its nilradical and is a prehomogeneous $\mathfrak{s}$-module for a Levi subalgebra $\mathfrak{s}$ of $\mathfrak{g}$. We use the classification of prehomogeneous $\mathfrak{s}$-modules for simple Lie algebras $\mathfrak{s}$ given by Vinberg to show that the solvable radical of a disemisimple Lie algebra with simple Levi subalgebra is abelian. We extend this result to disemisimple Lie algebras having no simple quotients of type $A$.

Sympathetic Lie algebras and adjoint cohomology for Lie algebras

We study sympathetic Lie algebras, namely perfect and complete Lie algebras. They arise among other things in the study of adjoint Lie algebra cohomology. This is motivated by a conjecture of Pirashvili, which says that a non-trivial finite-dimensional complex perfect Lie algebra is semisimple if and only if its adjoint cohomology vanishes. We prove several results on sympathetic Lie algebras and the adjoint Lie algebra cohomology of Lie algebras in general, using the Hochschild-Serre formula. For certain semidirect products we obtain explicit results for the adjoint cohomology.

A Zassenhaus conjecture and CPA-structures on simple modular Lie algebras

Commutative post-Lie algebra structures on Lie algebras, in short CPA structures, have been studied over fields of characteristic zero, in particular for real and complex numbers motivated by geometry. A perfect Lie algebra in characteristic zero only admits the trivial CPA-structure. In this article we study these structures over fields of characteristic $p>0$. We show that every perfect modular Lie algebra in characteristic $p>2$ having a solvable outer derivation algebra admits only the trivial CPA-structure. This involves a conjecture by Hans Zassenhaus, saying that the outer derivation algebra ${\rm Out}(\mathfrak{g})$ of a simple modular Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ is solvable. We try to summarize the known results on the Zassenhaus conjecture and prove some new results using the classification of simple modular Lie algebras by Premet and Strade for algebraically closed fields of characteristic $p>3$. As a corollary we obtain that that every central simple modular Lie algebra of characteristic $p>3$ admits only the trivial CPA-structure.

Almost inner derivations of 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras of genus 2

We study almost inner derivations of $2$-step nilpotent Lie algebras of genus $2$, i.e., having a $2$-dimensional commutator ideal, using matrix pencils. In particular we determine all almost inner derivations of such algebras in terms of minimal indices and elementary divisors over an arbitrary algebraically closed field of characteristic not $2$ and over the real numbers.

Post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras

We study post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n})$, motivated by nil-affine actions of Lie groups. We prove existence results for such structures depending on the interplay of the algebraic structures of $\mathfrak{g}$ and $\mathfrak{n}$. We consider the classes of simple, semisimple, reductive, perfect, solvable, nilpotent, abelian and unimodular Lie algebras. Furthermore we consider commutative post-Lie algebra structures on perfect Lie algebras. Using Lie algebra cohomology we prove that such structures are trivial in several cases. We classify commutative structures on low-dimensional Lie algebras, and study the case of nilpotent Lie algebras.

Derivation double Lie algebras

We study classical R-matrices D for Lie algebras L such that D is also a derivation of L. This yields derivation double Lie algebras (L,D). The motivation comes from recent work on post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras arising in the study of nil-affine actions of Lie groups. We prove that there are no nontrivial simple derivation double Lie algebras, and study related Lie algebra identities for arbitrary Lie algebras.

Derived length and nildecomposable Lie algebras

We study the minimal dimension of solvable and nilpotent Lie algebras over a field of characteristic zero with given derived length $k$. This is motivated by questions on nildecomposable Lie algebras $\Lg=\La+\Lb$, arising in the context of post-Lie algebra structures. The question is, how the derived length of $\Lg$ can be estimated in terms of the derived length and nilpotency classes of the two nilpotent subalgebras $\La$ and $\Lb$.

Abelian ideals of maximal dimension for solvable Lie algebras

We compare the maximal dimension of abelian subalgebras and the maximal dimension of abelian ideals for finite-dimensional Lie algebras. We show that these dimensions coincide for solvable Lie algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We compute this invariant for all complex nilpotent Lie algebras of dimension n less than 8. Furthermore we study the case where there exists an abelian subalgebra of codimension 2. Here we explicitly construct an abelian ideal of codimension 2 in case of nilpotent Lie algebras.

Affine actions on Lie groups and post-Lie algebra structures

We introduce post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras $(\Lg,\Ln)$ defined on a fixed vector space $V$. Special cases are LR-structures and pre-Lie algebra structures on Lie algebras. We show that post-Lie algebra structures naturally arise in the study of NIL-affine actions on nilpotent Lie groups. We obtain several results on the existence of post-Lie algebra structures, in terms of the algebraic structure of the two Lie algebras $\Lg$ and $\Ln$. One result is, for example, that if there exists a post-Lie algebra structure on $(\Lg,\Ln)$, where $\Lg$ is nilpotent, then $\Ln$ must be solvable. Furthermore special cases and examples are given. This includes a classification of all complex, two-dimensional post-Lie algebras.

Post-Lie algebra structures and generalized derivations of semisimple Lie algebras

We study post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras (g,n), and prove existence results for the case that one of the Lie algebras is semisimple. For semisimple g and solvable n we show that there exist no post-Lie algebra structures on (g,n). For semisimple n and certain solvable g we construct canonical post-Lie algebra structures. On the other hand we prove that there are no post-Lie algebra structures for semisimple n and solvable, unimodular g. We also determine the generalized $(\al,\be,\ga)$-derivations of n in the semisimple case. As an application we classify post-Lie algebra structures induced by generalized derivations.
