M-vector analogue for the cd-index

A well-known conjecture of McMullen, proved by Billera, Lee and Stanley, describes the face numbers of simple polytopes. The necessary and sufficient condition is that the toric g-vector of the polytope is an M-vector, that is, the vector of dimensions of graded pieces of a standard graded algebra A. Recent work by Murai, Nevo and Yanagawa suggests a similar condition for the coefficients of the cd-index of a poset P. The coefficients of the cd-index are conjectured to be the dimensions of graded pieces in a standard multigraded algebra A. We prove the conjecture for simplicial spheres and we give numerical evidence for general shellable spheres. In the simplicial case we construct the multi-graded algebra A explicitly using lattice paths.

Bivariant Algebraic Cobordism

We associate a bivariant theory to any suitable oriented Borel-Moore homology theory on the category of algebraic schemes or the category of algebraic G-schemes. Applying this to the theory of algebraic cobordism yields operational cobordism rings and operational G-equivariant cobordism rings associated to all schemes in these categories. In the case of toric varieties, the operational T-equivariant cobordism ring may be described as the ring of piecewise graded power series on the fan with coefficients in the Lazard ring.

On the complete cd-index of a Bruhat interval

We study the non-negativity conjecture of the complete cd-index of a Bruhat interval defined by Billera and Brenti. For each cd-monomial M we construct a set of paths, such that if a "flip condition" is satisfied, then the number of these paths is the coefficient of the monomial M in the complete cd-index. When the monomial contains at most one d, then the condition follows from Dyer's proof of Cellini's conjecture. Hence the coefficients of these monomials are non-negative. We also relate the flip condition to shelling of Bruhat intervals.

Vector bundles on toric varieties

CORRECTION. One of the main results in this paper contains a fatal error. We cannot conclude the existence of nontrivial vector bundles on X from the nontriviality of its K-group. The K-group that is computed here is the Grothendieck group of perfect complexes and not vector bundles. Since the varieties are not quasi-projective, existence of nontrivial perfect complexes says nothing about the existence of nontrivial vector bundles. We thank Sam Payne for drawing our attention to the error and Christian Haesemeyer for explanations about the K-theory. Abstract: Following Sam Payne's work, we study the existence problem of nontrivial vector bundles on toric varieties. The first result we prove is that every complete fan admits a nontrivial conewise linear multivalued function. Such functions could potentially be the Chern classes of toric vector bundles. Then we use the results of Cortiñas, Haesemeyer, Walker and Weibel to show that the (non-equivariant) Grothendieck group of the toric 3-fold studied by Payne is large, so the variety has a nontrivial vector bundle. Using the same computation, we show that every toric 3-fold X either has a nontrivial line bundle, or there is a finite surjective toric morphism from Y to X, such that Y has a large Grothendieck group.
