Desingularization of binomial varieties using toric Artin stacks

We show how the notion of fantastacks can be used to effectively desingularize binomial varieties defined over algebraically closed fields. In contrast to a desingularization via blow-ups in smooth centers, we drastically reduce the number of steps and the number of charts appearing along the process. Furthermore, we discuss how our considerations extend to a partial simultaneous normal crossings desingularization of finitely many binomial hypersurfaces.

Decomposition of degenerate Gromov-Witten invariants

We prove a decomposition formula of logarithmic Gromov-Witten invariants in a degeneration setting. A one-parameter log smooth family X->B with singular fibre over b_0 \in B yields a family M(X/B,β) -> B of moduli stacks of stable logarithmic maps. We give a virtual decomposition of the fibre of this family over b_0 in terms of rigid tropical curves. This generalizes one aspect of known results in the case that the fibre X_{b_0} is a normal crossings union of two divisors. We exhibit our formulas in explicit examples.

Relative desingularization and principalization of ideals

In characteristic zero, we construct relative principalization of ideals for logarithmically regular morphisms of logarithmic schemes, and use it to construct logarithmically regular desingularization of morphisms. These constructions are relatively canonical and even functorial with respect to logarithmically regular morphisms and arbitrary base changes. Relative canonicity means, that the principalization requires a fine enough non-canonical modification of the base, and once it is chosen the process is canonical. As a consequence we deduce the semistable reduction theorem over arbitrary valuation rings. In another our work in progress, the same problems will be solved canonically in the case of proper morphisms.

Toroidal orbifolds, destackification, and Kummer blowings up

We show that any toroidal DM stack $X$ with finite diagonalizable inertia possesses a maximal toroidal coarsening $X_{tcs}$ such that the morphism $X\to X_{tcs}$ is logarithmically smooth. Further, we use torification results of [AT17] to construct a destackification functor, a variant of the main result of Bergh [Ber17], on the category of such toroidal stacks $X$. Namely, we associate to $X$ a sequence of blowings up of toroidal stacks $\widetilde{\mathcal{F}}_X\:Y\longrightarrow X$ such that $Y_{tc}$ coincides with the usual coarse moduli space $Y_{cs}$. In particular, this provides a toroidal resolution of the algebraic space $X_{cs}$. Both $X_{tcs}$ and $\widetilde{\mathcal{F}}_X$ are functorial with respect to strict inertia preserving morphisms $X'\to X$. Finally, we use coarsening morphisms to introduce a class of non-representable birational modifications of toroidal stacks called Kummer blowings up. These modifications, as well as our version of destackification, are used in our work on functorial toroidal resolution of singularities.

Campana points, Vojta's conjecture, and level structures on semistable abelian varieties

We introduce a qualitative conjecture, in the spirit of Campana, to the effect that certain subsets of rational points on a variety over a number field, or a Deligne-Mumford stack over a ring of S-integers, cannot be Zariski dense. The conjecture interpolates, in a way that we make precise, between Lang's conjecture for rational points on varieties of general type over number fields, and the conjecture of Lang and Vojta that asserts that S-integral points on a variety of logarithmic general type are not Zariski-dense. We show our conjecture follows from Vojta's conjecture. Assuming our conjecture, we prove the following theorem: Fix a number field K, a finite set S of places of K containing the infinite places, and a positive integer g. Then there is an integer m_0 such that, for any m > m_0, no principally polarized abelian variety A/K of dimension g with semistable reduction outside of S has full level-m structure.

Level structures on abelian varieties, Kodaira dimensions, and Lang's conjecture

Assuming Lang's conjecture, we prove that for a fixed prime $p$, number field $K$, and positive integer $g$, there is an integer $r$ such that no principally polarized abelian variety $A/K$ of dimension $g$ has full level $p^r$ structure. To this end, we use a result of Zuo to prove that for each closed subvariety $X$ in the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$, there exists a level $m_X$ such that the irreducible components of the preimage of $X$ in $\mathcal{A}_g^{[m]}$ are of general type for $m > m_X$.

Torification of diagonalizable group actions on toroidal schemes

We study actions of diagonalizable groups on toroidal schemes (i.e. logarithmically regular logarithmic schemes). In particular, we show that for so-called toroidal actions the quotient is again a toroidal scheme. Our main result constructs for an arbitrary action a canonical torification - making the action toridal after an equivariant blowings up. This extends earlier results of Abramovich-de Jong, Abramovich-Karu-Matsuki-Włodarczyk, and Gabber in various aspects.

Luna's fundamental lemma for diagonalizable groups

We study relatively affine actions of a diagonalizable group $G$ on locally noetherian schemes. In particular, we generalize Luna's fundamental lemma when applied to a diagonalizable group: we obtain criteria for a $G$-equivariant morphism $f: X'\to X$ to be $strongly\ equivariant$, namely the base change of the morphism $f/\!/G$ of quotient schemes, and establish descent criteria for $f/\!/G$ to be an open embedding, étale, smooth, regular, syntomic, or lci.

Skeletons and fans of logarithmic structures

We survey a collection of closely related methods for generalizing fans of toric varieties, include skeletons, Kato fans, Artin fans, and polyhedral cone complexes, all of which apply in the wider context of logarithmic geometry. Under appropriate assumptions these structures are equivalent, but their different realizations have provided for surprisingly disparate uses. We highlight several current applications and suggest some future possibilities.

Configurations of points on degenerate varieties and properness of moduli spaces

Consider a smooth variety $X$ and a smooth divisor $D\subset X$. Kim and Sato (arXiv:0806.3819) define a natural compactification of $(X\setminus D)^n$, denoted $X_D^{[n]}$, which is a moduli space of stable configurations of $n$ points lying on expansions of $(X,D)$ in the sense of Jun Li (arXiv:math/0009097, arXiv:math/0110113). The purpose of this note is to generalize Kim and Sato's construction to the case where $X$ is an algebraic stack; and to construct an analogous projective moduli space $W_π^{[n]}$ for a degeneration $π:W \to B$. We construct $X^n_D$ and $W_π^{[n]}$ and prove their properness using a universal construction introduced in our paper arXiv:1110.2976 with Cadman and Wise. We then use these spaces for a concrete application, as explained in the next paragraph. In arXiv:1103.5132, a degeneration formula for Gromov--Witten invariants of schemes and stacks is developed, generalizing the approach of Jun Li. This in particular requires proving properness of Li's stack of pre-deformable stable maps in the case where the target $(X,D)$ or $W\to B$ is a Deligne--Mumford stack. One could simply adapt Li's proof, or follow the age-old tradition of imposing such endeavor as an exercise on "the interested reader". Instead, we prefer to provide a different proof here, which uses the properness of $X_D^{[n]}$ and $W_π^{[n]}$. Similar ideas are used by Kim, Kresch and Oh (arXiv:1105.6143) to prove the properness of their space of ramified maps. This note is identical to the text available on our web pages since March 2013. It is posted now as it has become an essential ingredient in others' work.

Comparison theorems for Gromov-Witten invariants of smooth pairs and of degenerations

We consider four approaches to relative Gromov-Witten theory and Gromov-Witten theory of degenerations: Jun Li's original approach, Bumsig Kim's logarithmic expansions, Abramovich-Fantechi's orbifold expansions, and a logarithmic theory without expansions due to Gross-Siebert and Abramovich-Chen. We exhibit morphisms relating these moduli spaces and prove that their virtual fundamental classes are compatible by pushforward through these morphisms. This implies that the Gromov-Witten invariants associated to all four of these theories are identical.

Twisted stable maps to tame Artin stacks

This paper is a continuation of our earlier development of a theory of tame Artin stacks. Our main goal here is the construction of an appropriate analogue of Kontsevich's space of stable maps in the case where the target is a tame Artin stack. When the target is a tame Deligne--Mumford stack, the theory was developed by Abramovich and Vistoli, and found a number of applications. The theory for arbitrary tame Artin stacks developed here is very similar, but it is necessary to overcome a number of technical hurdles and to generalize a few questions of foundation.

On The Global Quotient Structure of The Space of Twisted Stable Maps to a Quotient Stack

Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a tame proper Deligne-Mumford stack of the form $[M/G]$ where $M$ is a scheme and $G$ is an algebraic group. We prove that the stack $\mathcal{K}_{g,n}(\mathcal{X},d)$ of twisted stable maps is a quotient stack and can be embedded into a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack. When $G$ is finite, we give a more precise construction of $\mathcal{K}_{g,n}(\mathcal{X},d)$ using Hilbert schemes and admissible $G$-covers.

Smoothness, Semistability, and Toroidal Geometry

We provide a new proof of the following result: Let $X$ be a variety of finite type over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic 0, let $Z\subset X$ be a proper closed subset. There exists a modification $f:X_1 \rar X$, such that $X_1$ is a quasi-projective nonsingular variety and $Z_1 = f^{-1}(Z)_\red$ is a strict divisor of normal crossings. Needless to say, this theorem is a weak version of Hironaka's well known theorem on resolution of singularities. Our proof has the feature that it builds on two standard techniques of algebraic geometry: semistable reduction for curves, and toric geometry. Another proof of the same result was discovered independently by F. Bogomolov and T. Pantev. The two proofs are similar in spirit but quite different in detail.

Lang's conjectures, Conjecture H, and uniformity

The purpose of this note is to wish a happy birthday to Professor Lucia Caporaso.* We prove that Conjecture H of Caporaso et. al. ([CHarM], sec. 6) together with Lang's conjecture implies the uniformity of rational points on varieties of general type, as predicted in [CHarM]; a few applications in arithmetic and geometry are stated. Let X be a variety of general type defined over a number field K. It was conjectured by S. Lang that the set of rational points X(K) is not Zariski dense in X. In the paper [CHarM] of L. Caporaso, J. Harris and B. Mazur it is shown that the above conjecture of Lang implies the existence of a uniform bound on the number of K-rational points of all curves of fixed genus g over K. The paper [CHarM] has immediately created a chasm among arithmetic geometers. This chasm, which often runs right in the middle of the personalities involved, divides between loyal believers of Lang's conjecture, who marvel in this powerful implication, and the disbelievers, who try (so far in vain) to use this implication to derive counterexamples to the conjecture. In this paper we will attempt to deepen this chasm, using the techniques of [CHarM] and continuing [aleph], by proving more implications, some of which very strong, of various conjectures of Lang. Along the way we will often use a conjecture donned by Caporaso et. al. Conjecture H (see again [CHarM], sec. 6) about Higher dimensional varieties, which is regarded very plausible among experts of higher dimensional algebraic geometry. In particular, we will show
