Supergraph calculation of one-loop divergences in higher-derivative $6D$ SYM theory

We apply the harmonic superspace approach for calculating the divergent part of the one-loop effective action of $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric higher-derivative gauge theory with a dimensionless coupling constant. Our consideration uses the background superfield method allowing to carry out the analysis of the effective action in a manifestly gauge covariant and ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric way. We exploit the regularization by dimensional reduction in which the divergences are absorbed into a renormalization of the coupling constant. Having the expression for the one-loop divergences, we calculate the relevant $β$-function. Its sign is specified by the overall sign of the classical action which in higher-derivative theories is not fixed {\it a priori}. The result agrees with the earlier calculations in the component approach. The superfield calculation is simpler and provides possibilities for various generalizations.

The renormalization structure of $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric higher-derivative gauge theory

We consider the harmonic superspace formulation of higher-derivative $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric gauge theory and its minimal coupling to a hypermultiplet. In components, the kinetic term for the gauge field in such a theory involves four space-time derivatives. The theory is quantized in the framework of the superfield background method ensuring manifest $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetry and the classical gauge invariance of the quantum effective action. We evaluate the superficial degree of divergence and prove it to be independent of the number of loops. Using the regularization by dimensional reduction, we find possible counterterms and show that they can be removed by the coupling constant renormalization for any number of loops, while the divergences in the hypermultiplet sector are absent at all. Assuming that the deviation of the gauge-fixing term from that in the Feynman gauge is small, we explicitly calculate the divergent part of the one-loop effective action in the lowest order in this deviation. In the approximation considered, the result is independent of the gauge-fixing parameter and agrees with the earlier calculation for the theory without a hypermultiplet.

The three-loop Adler $D$-function for ${\cal N}=1$ SQCD with various renormalization prescriptions

The three-loop Adler $D$-function for ${\cal N}=1$ SQCD in the $\overline{\mbox{DR}}$ scheme is calculated. It appears that the result does not satisfy NSVZ-like equation which relates the $D$-function to the anomalous dimension of the matter superfields. However this NSVZ-like equation can be restored by a special tuning of the renormalization scheme. Also we demonstrate that the $D$-function defined in terms of the bare coupling does not satisfy the NSVZ-like equation in the case of using the regularization by dimensional reduction. The scheme-dependence of the $D$-function written in the form of the $β$-expansion is briefly discussed.

Three-loop verification of a new algorithm for the calculation of a $β$-function in supersymmetric theories regularized by higher derivatives for the case of ${\cal N}=1$ SQED

We verify a recently proposed method for obtaining a $β$-function of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories regularized by higher derivatives by an explicit calculation. According to this method, a $β$-function can be found by calculating specially modified vacuum supergraphs instead of a much larger number of the two-point superdiagrams. The result is produced in the form of a certain integral of double total derivatives with respect to the loop momenta. Here we compare the results obtained for the three-loop $β$-function of ${\cal N}=1$ SQED in the general $ξ$-gauge with the help of this method and with the help of the standard calculation. Their coincidence confirms the correctness of the new method and the general argumentation used for its derivation. Also we verify that in the considered approximation the NSVZ relation is valid for the renormalization group functions defined in terms of the bare coupling constant and for the ones defined in terms of the renormalized coupling constant in the HD+MSL scheme, both its sides being gauge-independent.

The $β$-function of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories regularized by higher covariant derivatives as an integral of double total derivatives

For a general ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory regularized by higher covariant derivatives we prove in all orders that the $β$-function defined in terms of the bare couplings is given by integrals of double total derivatives with respect to loop momenta. With the help of the technique used for this proof it is possible to construct a method for obtaining these loop integrals, which essentially simplifies the calculations. As an illustration of this method, we find the expression for the three-loop contribution to the $β$-function containing the Yukawa couplings and compare it with the result of the standard calculations made earlier. Also we briefly discuss, how the structure of the loop integrals for the $β$-function considered in this paper can be used for the all-loop perturbative derivation of the NSVZ relation in the non-Abelian case.

One-loop divergences in non-Abelian supersymmetric theories regularized by BRST-invariant version of the higher derivative regularization

We consider a general non-Abelian renormalizable ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory, regularized by higher covariant derivatives without breaking the BRST invariance, and calculate one-loop divergences for a general form of higher derivative regulator and of the gauge fixing term. It is demonstrated that the momentum integrals giving the one-loop $β$-function are integrals of double total derivatives independently of a particular choice of the higher derivative term. Evaluating them we reproduce the well-known result for the one-loop $β$-function. Also we find that the three-point ghost vertices with a single line of the quantum gauge superfield are not renormalized in the considered approximation.

One-loop divergences in the 6D, N=(1,0) abelian gauge theory

We consider, in the harmonic superspace approach, the six-dimensional N=(1,0) supersymmetric model of abelian gauge multiplet coupled to a hypermultiplet. The superficial degree of divergence is evaluated and the structure of possible one-loop divergences is analyzed. Using the superfield proper-time and background-field technique, we compute the divergent part of the one-loop effective action depending on both the gauge multiplet and the hypermultiplet. The corresponding counterterms contain the purely gauge multiplet contribution together with the mixed contributions of the gauge multiplet and hypermultiplet. We show that the theory is on-shell one-loop finite in the gauge multiplet sector in agreement with the results of [1]. The divergences in the mixed sector cannot be eliminated by any field redefinition, implying the theory to be UV divergent at one loop.

The NSVZ scheme for ${\cal N}=1$ SQED with $N_f$ flavors, regularized by the dimensional reduction, in the three-loop approximation

At the three-loop level we analyze, how the NSVZ relation appears for ${\cal N}=1$ SQED regularized by the dimensional reduction. This is done by the method analogous to the one which was earlier used for the theories regularized by higher derivatives. Within the dimensional technique, the loop integrals cannot be written as integrals of double total derivatives. However, similar structures can be written in the considered approximation and are taken as a starting point. Then we demonstrate that, unlike the higher derivative regularization, the NSVZ relation is not valid for the renormalization group functions defined in terms of the bare coupling constant. However, for the renormalization group functions defined in terms of the renormalized coupling constant, it is possible to impose boundary conditions to the renormalization constants giving the NSVZ scheme in the three-loop order. They are similar to the all-loop ones defining the NSVZ scheme obtained with the higher derivative regularization, but are more complicated. The NSVZ schemes constructed with the dimensional reduction and with the higher derivative regularization are related by a finite renormalization in the considered approximation.

Derivation of the exact expression for the D function in N=1 SQCD

We discuss various details of our derivation of the exact expression for the Adler D function in N=1 supersymmetric QCD (SQCD). This exact formula relates the D function to anomalous dimensions of the matter superfields. Our perturbative derivation refers to the D function defined in terms of the bare coupling constant in the case of using the higher covariant derivative regularization. The exact expression for this function is obtained by direct summation of supergraphs to all orders in the non-Abelian coupling constant. As we argued previously, our formula should be valid beyond perturbation theory too. The perturbative result we present here coincides with the general formula order by order. We discuss consequences for N=1 SQCD in the conformal window. It is noted that our exact relation can allow one to determine the (infrared) critical anomalous dimension of the Seiberg M field present in the dual theory.

Equation for one-loop divergences in two dimensions and its application to higher spin fields

A simple formula for one-loop logarithmic divergences on the background of a two-dimensional curved space-time is derived for theories for which the second variation of the action is a nonminimal second order operator with small nonminimal terms. In particular, this formula allows to calculate terms which are integrals of total derivatives. As an application of the result, one-loop divergences for the higher spin fields on the constant curvature background are obtained in a nonminimal gauge, which depends on two parameters. By an explicit calculation we demonstrate that with the considered accuracy the result is gauge independent. Moreover, the result appeared to be independent of the spin $s$ for $s\ge 3$.

Manifestly N=2 supersymmetric regularization for N=2 supersymmetric field theories

We formulate the higher covariant derivative regularization for N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in N=2 harmonic superspace. This regularization is constructed by adding the N=2 supersymmetric higher derivative term to the classical action and inserting the N=2 supersymmetric Pauli--Villars determinants into the generating functional for removing one-loop divergencies. Unlike all other regularization schemes in N=2 supersymmetric quantum field theory, this regularization preserves by construction the manifest N=2 supersymmetry at all steps of calculating loop corrections to the effective action. Together with N=2 supersymmetric background field method this regularization allows to calculate quantum corrections without breaking the manifest gauge symmetry and N=2 supersymmetry. Thus, we justify the assumption about existence of a regularization preserving N=2 supersymmetry, which is a key element of the N=2 non-renormalization theorem. As a result, we give the prove of the N=2 non-renormalization theorem which does not require any additional assumptions.

Structure of three-loop contributions to the beta-function of N=1 SQED with N_f flavors, regularized by the dimensional reduction

In the case of using the higher derivative regularization for $N=1$ SQED with $N_f$ flavors the loop integrals giving the $β$-function are integrals of double total derivatives in the momentum space. This feature allows to reduce one of the loop integrals to an integral of the $δ$-function and to derive the NSVZ relation for the renormalization group functions defined in terms of the bare coupling constant. In this paper we consider $N=1$ SQED with $N_f$ flavors regularized by the dimensional reduction in the $\overline{\mbox{DR}}$-scheme. Evaluating the scheme-dependent three-loop contribution to the $β$-function proportional to $(N_f)^2$ we find the structures analogous to integrals of the $δ$-singularities. After adding the scheme-independent terms proportional to $(N_f)^1$ we obtain the known result for the three-loop $β$-function.

Relation between two-point Green functions of ${\cal N}=1$ SQED with $N_f$ flavors, regularized by higher derivatives, in the three-loop approximation

We verify the identity which relates the two-point Green functions of ${\cal N}=1$ SQED with $N_f$ flavors, regularized by higher derivatives, by explicit calculations in the three-loop approximation. This identity explains why in the limit of the vanishing external momentum the two-point Green function of the gauge superfield is given by integrals of double total derivatives in the momentum space. It also allows to derive the NSVZ $β$-function exactly in all loops if the renormalization group functions are defined in terms of the bare coupling constant. In order to verify the considered identity we use it for constructing integrals giving the three-loop $β$-function starting from the two-point Green functions of the matter superfields in the two-loop approximation. Then we demonstrate that the results for these integrals coincide with the sums of the corresponding three-loop supergraphs.

Scheme independent consequence of the NSVZ relation for N=1 SQED with N_f flavors

The exact NSVZ $β$-function is obtained for ${\cal N}=1$ SQED with $N_f$ flavors in all orders of the perturbation theory, if the renormalization group functions are defined in terms of the bare coupling constant and the theory is regularized by higher derivatives. However, if the renormalization group functions are defined in terms of the renormalized coupling constant, the NSVZ relation between the $β$-function and the anomalous dimension of the matter superfields is valid only in a certain (NSVZ) scheme. We prove that for ${\cal N}=1$ SQED with $N_f$ flavors the NSVZ relation is valid for the terms proportional to $(N_f)^1$ in an arbitrary subtraction scheme, while the terms proportional to $(N_f)^k$ with $k\ge 2$ are scheme dependent. These results are verified by an explicit calculation of a three-loop $β$-function and a two-loop anomalous dimension made with the higher derivative regularization in the NSVZ and MOM subtraction schemes. In this approximation it is verified that in the MOM subtraction scheme the renormalization group functions obtained with the higher derivative regularization and with the dimensional reduction coincide.

The higher derivative regularization and quantum corrections in ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric theories

We construct a new version of the higher covariant derivative regularization for a general ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theory formulated in terms of ${\cal N}=1$ superfields. This regularization preserves both supersymmetries of the classical action, namely, the invariance under the manifest ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry and under the second hidden on-shell supersymmetry. The regularizing ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric higher derivative term is found in the explicit form in terms of ${\cal N}=1$ superfields. Thus, ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetry is broken only by the gauge fixing procedure. Then we analyze the exact NSVZ $β$-function and prove that in the considered model its higher loop structure is determined by the anomalous dimension of the chiral superfield $Φ$ in the adjoint representation which is the ${\cal N}=2$ superpartner of the gauge superfield $V$. Using the background field method we find that this anomalous dimension is related with the anomalous dimension of the hypermultiplet and vanishes if the effective action is invariant under ${\cal N}=2$ background supersymmetry. As a consequence, in this case the higher loop contributions to $β$-function also vanish. The one-loop renormalization structure in the considered regularization is also studied by the explicit calculations of the one-loop renormalization constants.

The NSVZ beta-function and the Schwinger-Dyson equations for N=1 SQED with N_f flavors, regularized by higher derivatives

The effective diagram technique based on the Schwinger-Dyson equations is constructed for N=1 SQED with N_f flavors, regularized by higher derivatives. Using these effective diagrams, it is possible to derive the exact NSVZ relation between the beta-function and the anomalous dimension of the matter superfields exactly in all loops, if the renormalization group functions are defined in terms of the bare coupling constant. In particular, we verify that all integrals which give the beta-function defined in terms of the bare coupling constant are integrals of double total derivatives and prove some identities relating Green functions.

The NSVZ beta-function in supersymmetric theories with different regularizations and renormalization prescriptions

We briefly review the calculations of quantum corrections related with the exact NSVZ $β$-function in ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric theories, paying especial attention to the scheme dependence of the results. It is explained, how the NSVZ relation is obtained for the renormalization group functions defined in terms of the bare coupling constant if a theory is regularized by higher derivatives. Also we describe, how to construct a special renormalization prescription which gives the NSVZ relation for the renormalization group functions defined in terms of the renormalized coupling constant exactly in all orders for Abelian supersymmetric theories, regularized by higher derivatives. The scheme dependence of the NSVZ $β$-function (for the renormalization group functions defined in terms of the renormalized coupling constant) is discussed in the non-Abelian case. It is shown that in this case the NSVZ $β$-function leads to a certain scheme-independent equality.

NSVZ scheme with the higher derivative regularization for N=1 SQED

The exact NSVZ relation between a $β$-function of ${\cal N}=1$ SQED and an anomalous dimension of the matter superfields is studied within the Slavnov higher derivative regularization approach. It is shown that if the renormalization group functions are defined in terms of the bare coupling constant, this relation is always valid. In the renormalized theory the NSVZ relation is obtained in the momentum subtraction scheme supplemented by a special finite renormalization. Unlike the dimensional reduction, the higher derivative regularization allows to fix this finite renormalization. This is made by imposing the conditions $Z_3(α,μ=Λ)=1$ and $Z(α,μ=Λ)=1$ on the renormalization constants of ${\cal N}=1$ SQED, where $Λ$ is a parameter in the higher derivative term. The results are verified by the explicit three-loop calculation. In this approximation we relate the $\bar{DR}$ scheme and the NSVZ scheme defined within the higher derivative approach by the finite renormalization.

Multiloop calculations in supersymmetric theories with the higher covariant derivative regularization

Most calculations of quantum corrections in supersymmetric theories are made with the dimensional reduction, which is a modification of the dimensional regularization. However, it is well known that the dimensional reduction is not self-consistent. A consistent regularization, which does not break the supersymmetry, is the higher covariant derivative regularization. However, the integrals obtained with this regularization can not be usually calculated analytically. We discuss application of this regularization to the calculations in supersymmetric theories. In particular, it is demonstrated that integrals defining the beta-function are possibly integrals of total derivatives. This feature allows to explain the origin of the exact NSVZ beta-function, relating the beta-function with the anomalous dimensions of the matter superfields. However, integrals for the anomalous dimension should be calculated numerically.

Derivation of the exact NSVZ beta-function in N=1 SQED, regularized by higher derivatives, by direct summation of Feynman diagrams

For N=1 supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics, regularized by higher derivatives, a method for summation of all Feynman diagrams defining the beta-function is presented. Using this method we prove that the beta-function is given by an integral of a total derivative, which can be easily calculated. It is shown that surviving terms give the exact NSVZ beta-function. The results are compared with the explicit three-loop calculation.

Factorization of integrals defining the two-loop beta-function for the general renormalizable N=1 SYM theory, regularized by the higher covariant derivatives, into integrals of double total derivatives

The integrals defining the two-loop beta-function for the general renormalizable N=1 supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory, regularized by higher covariant derivatives, are investigated. It is shown that they are given by integrals of double total derivatives. These integrals are not equal to zero due to appearing of delta-functions. These delta-functions allow to reduce the two-loop integrals to one-loop integrals, which can be easily calculated. The result agrees with the exact NSVZ beta-function and calculations made by different methods.

Investigation of the anomaly puzzle in N=1 supersymmetric electrodynamics

Using Schwinger-Dyson equations and Ward identities in N=1 supersymmetric electrodynamics, regularized by higher derivatives, we find, that it is possible to calculate some contributions to the two-point Green function of the gauge field and to the beta-function exactly to all orders of the perturbation theory. The results are applied for the investigation of the anomaly puzzle in the considered theory.

Detailed analysis of the dependence of the one-loop counterterms on the gauge and parametrization in the Einstein gravity with the cosmological constant

In this paper, the dependence of the Einstein gravity with the cosmological constant as well as of this theory in the first-order formalism on the gauge and parametrization is been analyzed. The one-loop counterterms off the mass shell have been plainly calculated in arbitrary gauge and parametrization. The tensor package of analytic calculations, written in REDUCE, allowed all the calculations to be carried out. A method of renormalization group functions calculations off shell is discussed.
