Phase structure of the $O(2)$ ghost model with higher-order gradient term

The phase structure and the infrared behaviour of the Euclidean 3-dimensional $O(2)$ symmetric ghost scalar field model with higher-order derivative term has been investigated in Wegner and Houghton's renormalization group framework. The symmetric phase in which no ghost condensation occurs and the phase with restored symmetry but with a transient presence of a ghost condensate have been identified. Finiteness of the correlation length at the phase boundary hints to a phase transition of first order. The results are compared with those for the ordinary $O(2)$ symmetric scalar field model.

Asymptotic safety in the sine-Gordon model

In the framework of the functional renormalization group method it is shown that the phase structure of the 2-dimensional sine-Gordon model possesses a nontrivial UV fixed point which makes the model asymptotically safe. The fixed point exhibits strong singularity similarly to the scaling found in the vicinity of the infrared fixed point. The singularity signals the upper energy-scale limit to the validity of the model. We argue that the sine-Gordon model with a momentum-dependent wavefunction renormalization is in a dual connection with the massive sine-Gordon model.

On explosion of the chaotic attractor

There are presented examples of the rather sudden and violent explosion of the strange attractor of a one-dimensional driven damped anharmonic oscillator induced by a relatively small change of the amplitude of the strongly nonperturbative periodic driving force. A phenomenologic characterization of the explosion of the strange attractor has been given in terms of the behavior of the average maximal Lyapunov exponent ${\bar λ}$ and that of the fractal dimension $D_{q}$ for $q=-4$. It is shown that the building up of the exploding strange attractor is accompanied by a nearly linear increase of the maximal average Lyapunov exponent ${\bar λ}$. A sudden jump of the fractal dimension $D_{-4}$ is detected when the explosion starts off from an attractor consisting of disjoint bunches separated by an empty phase-space region.

Optimized regulator for the quantized anharmonic oscillator

The energy gap between the first excited state and the ground state is calculated for the quantized anharmonic oscillator in the framework of the functional renormalization group method. The compactly supported smooth regulator is used which includes various types of regulators as limiting cases. It was found that the value of the energy gap depends on the regulator parameters. We argue that the optimization based on the disappearance of the false, broken symmetric phase of the model leads to the Litim's regulator. The least sensitivity on the regulator parameters leads however to an IR regulator being somewhat different of the Litim's one, but it can be described as a perturbatively improved, or generalized Litim's regulator and provides analytic evolution equations, too.

Particle in a cavity in one-dimensional bandlimited quantum mechanics

The effects of the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) on the low-energy stationary states of a particle moving in a cavity with no sharp boundaries are determined by means of the perturbation expansion in the framework of one-dimensional bandlimited quantum mechanics. A realization of GUP resulting in the existence of a finite ultraviolet (UV) wave-vector cutoff $K\sim 1/\ell_P$ (with the Planck length $\ell_P$) is considered. The cavity of the size $\ell \gg \ell_P$ is represented by an infinitely deep trapezoid-well potential with boundaries smeared out in a range $R$ satisfying the inequalities $\ell\gg R\gtrsim \ell_P$. In order to determine the energy shifts of the low-lying stationary states, the usual perturbation expansion is reformulated in a manner that enables one to treat consistently order-by-order the direct and indirect GUP effects, i.e., those due to the modification of the Hamiltonian and the lack of the UV modes, respectively. It is shown that the leading terms of the indirect and the direct GUP effects are of the first and second order, respectively, in the small parameter $\ell_P/\ell$ in agreement with our previous finding in a more naive approach [1].

Critical exponents in quantum Einstein gravity

The quantum Einstein gravity is treated by the functional renormalization group method using the Einstein-Hilbert action. The ultraviolet non-Gaussian fixed point is determined and its corresponding exponent of the correlation length is calculated for a wide range of regulators. It is shown that the exponent provides a minimal sensitivity to the parameters of the regulator which correspond to the Litim's regulator.

Interplay of fixed points in scalar models

We performed the renormalization group analysis of scalar models exhibiting spontaneous symmetry breaking. It is shown that an infrared fixed point appears in the broken symmetric phase of the models, which induces a dynamical scale, that can be identified with the correlation length. This enables one to identify the type of the phase transition which shows similarity to the one appearing in the crossover scale. The critical exponent $ν$ of the correlation length also proved to be equal in the crossover and the infrared scaling regimes.

Some consequences of GUP induced ultraviolet wavevector cutoff in one-dimensional Quantum Mechanics

A projection method is proposed to treat the one-dimensional Schrodinger equation for a single particle when the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) generates an ultraviolet (UV) wavevector cutoff. The existence of a unique coordinate representation called the naive one is derived from the one-parameter family of discrete coordinate representations. In this bandlimited Quantum Mechanics a continuous potential is reconstructed from discrete sampled values observed by means of a particle in maximally localized states. It is shown that bandlimitation modifies the speed of the center and the spreading time of a Gaussian wavepacket moving in free space. Indication is found that GUP accompanied by bandlimitation may cause departures of the low-lying energy levels of a particle in a box from those in ordinary Quantum Mechanics much less suppressed than commonly thought when GUP without bandlimitation is in work.

Infrared fixed point in quantum Einstein gravity

We performed the renormalization group analysis of the quantum Einstein gravity in the deep infrared regime for different types of extensions of the model. It is shown that an attractive infrared point exists in the broken symmetric phase of the model. It is also shown that due to the Gaussian fixed point the IR critical exponent $ν$ of the correlation length is 1/2. However, there exists a certain extension of the model which gives finite correlation length in the broken symmetric phase. It typically appears in case of models possessing a first order phase transitions as is demonstrated on the example of the scalar field theory with a Coleman-Weinberg potential.

Onset of symmetry breaking by the functional RG method

A numerical algorithm is used to solve the bare and the effective potential for the scalar $ϕ^4$ model in the local potential approximation. An approximate dynamical Maxwell-cut is found which reveals itself in the degeneracy of the action for modes at some scale. This result indicates that the potential develop singular field dependence as far as one can see it by an lgorithm of limited numerical accuracy

preprint2010arXiv

Functional renormalization group for quantized anharmonic oscillator

Functional renormalization group methods formulated in the real-time formalism are applied to the $O(N)$ symmetric quantum anharmonic oscillator, considered as a $0+1$ dimensional quantum field-theoric model, in the next-to-leading order of the gradient expansion of the one- and two-particle irreducible effective action. The infrared scaling laws and the sensitivity-matrix analysis show the existence of only a single, symmetric phase. The field-independent term of the wavefunction renormalization turned out to be negligible, but its field-dependent piece is noticeable. It is shown that the infrared limits of the running couplings depend on the renormalization group scheme used, when the perturbation expansion in the bare quartic coupling is truncated keeping the terms up to the second order.

Phase Structure and Compactness

In order to study the influence of compactness on low-energy properties, we compare the phase structures of the compact and non-compact two-dimensional multi-frequency sine-Gordon models. It is shown that the high-energy scaling of the compact and non-compact models coincides, but their low-energy behaviors differ. The critical frequency $β^2 = 8π$ at which the sine-Gordon model undergoes a topological phase transition is found to be unaffected by the compactness of the field since it is determined by high-energy scaling laws. However, the compact two-frequency sine-Gordon model has first and second order phase transitions determined by the low-energy scaling: we show that these are absent in the non-compact model.

Quantum censorship in two dimensions

It is pointed out that increasingly attractive interactions, represented by partially concave local potential in the Lagrangian, may lead to the degeneracy of the blocked, renormalized action at the gliding cutoff scale by tree-level renormalization. A quantum counterpart of this mechanism is presented in the two-dimensional sine-Gordon model. The presence of Quantum Censorship is conjectured which makes the loop contributions pile up during the renormalization and thereby realize an approximate semiclassical effect.

preprint2009arXiv

Functional renormalization group approach to the sine-Gordon model

The renormalization group flow is presented for the two-dimensional sine-Gordon model within the framework of the functional renormalization group method by including the wave-function renormalization constant. The Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinski type phase structure is recovered as the interpolating scaling law between two competing IR attractive area of the global renormalization group flow.

Search for periodic vacuum in QED$_2$

It is shown that the vacuum of QED$_2$ in Minkowski spacetime does not favour a periodic electric mean field. The projected effective action exhibiting a genuine dependence on the non-vanishing background field has been introduced. The functional dependence of the energy density of the vacuum on the assumed periodic vacuum expectation value of the vector potential is determined from the component $T^{00}$ of the energy-momentum tensor at one-loop order. Treating the background field non-perturbatively, the energy of the vacuum in the presence of a periodic mean field is found not be equal to the negative of the effective action.

Non-Trivial Fixed Points of the Scalar Field Theory

The phase structure of the scalar field theory with arbitrary powers of the gradient operator and a local non-analytic potential is investigated by the help of the RG in Euclidean space. The RG equation for the generating function of the derivative part of the action is derived. Infinitely many non-trivial fixed points of the RG transformations are found. The corresponding effective actions are unbounded from below and do probably not exhibit any particle content. Therefore they do not provide physically sensible theories.

Effect of the Haar measure on the finite temperature effective potential of $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills theory

Including the Haar measure we show that the effective potential of the regularized SU(2) Yang-Mills theory has a minimum at vanishing Wilson-line $W=0$ for strong coupling, whereas it develops two degenerate minima close to $W=\pm 1$ for weak coupling. This suggests that the non-abelian character of $SU(2)$ as contained in the Haar measure might be responsible for confinement.

preprint1995arXiv

Renormalized finite temperature effective potential of $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills theory

It is shown that the renormalized finite temperature effective potential for continuum $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills theory develops a non-perturbative minimum for sufficiently strong coupling, i.e. below a critical temperature. The corresponding phase can be the candidate for the confining phase of the continuum theory and becomes energetically favoured basicly due to the decay of the $A^0$ condensate into three gluons.

Time evolution of the two-jet events $e^+-e^- \to hadrons$ in the Dynamical String Model

The time dependent pion emission rate and the mean life time of the pion source in the center of mass frame of the two-jet events have been determined for $e^+-e^- \to hadrons$ at $\sqrt{s} = 20 - 50$ GeV by the Dynamical String Model. It was established that the time needed for the creation of the pion source is $5$ fm/c, whereas its life time is $τ_0 \approx 7 - 13$ fm/c for energies $\sqrt{s} = 20 - 50$ GeV, respectively.
