Coupled pair of one and two dimensional magneto-plasmons on electrons on helium

Electrons on the liquid helium surface form an extremely clean two dimensional system where different plasmon-excitations can coexist. Under a magnetic field time reversal symmetry is broken and all the bulk magneto-plasmons become gaped at frequencies below cyclotron resonance while chiral one dimensional edge magneto-plasmons appear at the system perimeter. We theoretically show that the presence of a homogeneous density gradient in the electron gas leads to the formation of a delocalized magneto-plasmon mode in the same frequency range as the lowest frequency edge-magnetoplasmon mode. We experimentally confirm its existence by measuring the corresponding resonance peak in frequency dependence of the admittance of the electron gas. This allows to realize a prototype system to investigate the coupling between a chiral one-dimensional mode and a single delocalized bulk mode. Such a model system can be important for the understanding of transport properties of topological materials where states of different dimensionality can coexist.

Bistability and Hysteresis of Intersubband Absorption in Strongly Interacting Electrons on Liquid Helium

We study nonlinear inter-subband microwave absorption of electrons bound to the liquid helium surface. Already for a comparatively low radiation intensity, resonant absorption due to transitions between the two lowest subbands is accompanied by electron overheating. The overheating results in a significant population of higher subbands. The Coulomb interaction between electrons causes a shift of the resonant frequency, which depends on the population of the excited states and thus on the electron temperature $T_e$. The latter is determined experimentally from the electron photoconductivity. The experimentally established relationship between the frequency shift and $T_e$ is in reasonable agreement with the theory. The dependence of the shift on the radiation intensity introduces nonlinearity into the rate of the inter-subband absorption resulting in bistability and hysteresis of the resonant response. The hysteresis of the response explains the behavior in the regime of frequency modulation, which we observe for electrons on liquid $^3$He and which was previously seen for electrons on liquid $^4$He.

Quantized escape and formation of edge channels at high Landau levels

We present nonlocal resistance measurements in an ultra high mobility two dimensional electron gas. Our experiments show that even at weak magnetic fields classical guiding along edges leads to a strong non local resistance on macroscopic distances. In this high Landau level regime the transport along edges is dissipative and can be controlled by the amplitude of the voltage drop along the edge. We report resonances in the nonlocal transport as a function of this voltage that are interpreted as escape and formation of edge channels.

Spin bottleneck in resonant tunneling through double quantum dots with different Zeeman splittings

We investigated the electron transport property of the InGaAs/GaAs double quantum dots, the electron g-factors of which are different from each other. We found that in a magnetic field, the resonant tunneling is suppressed even if one of the Zeeman sublevels is aligned. This is because the other misaligned Zeeman sublevels limit the total current. A finite broadening of the misaligned sublevel partially relieves this bottleneck effect, and the maximum current is reached when interdot detuning is half the Zeeman energy difference.

Tuning of metal-insulator transition of two-dimensional electrons at parylene/SrTiO$_3$ interface by electric field

Electrostatic carrier doping using a field-effect-transistor structure is an intriguing approach to explore electronic phases by critical control of carrier concentration. We demonstrate the reversible control of the insulator-metal transition (IMT) in a two dimensional (2D) electron gas at the interface of insulating SrTiO$_3$ single crystals. Superconductivity was observed in a limited number of devices doped far beyond the IMT, which may imply the presence of 2D metal-superconductor transition. This realization of a two-dimensional metallic state on the most widely-used perovskite oxide is the best manifestation of the potential of oxide electronics.

Observation of strong electron dephasing in disordered Cu$_{93}$Ge$_4$Au$_3$ thin films

We report the observation of strong electron dephasing in a series of disordered Cu$_{93}$Ge$_4$Au$_3$ thin films. A very short electron dephasing time possessing very weak temperature dependence around 6 K, followed by an upturn with further decrease in temperature below 4 K, is found. The upturn is progressively more pronounced in more disordered samples. Moreover, a ln$T$ dependent, but high-magnetic-field-insensitive, resistance rise persisting from above 10 K down to 30 mK is observed in the films. These results suggest a nonmagnetic dephasing process which is stronger than any known mechanism and may originate from the coupling of conduction electrons to dynamic defects.
