Physics Beyond Colliders at CERN: Beyond the Standard Model Working Group Report

The Physics Beyond Colliders initiative is an exploratory study aimed at exploiting the full scientific potential of the CERN's accelerator complex and scientific infrastructures through projects complementary to the LHC and other possible future colliders. These projects will target fundamental physics questions in modern particle physics. This document presents the status of the proposals presented in the framework of the Beyond the Standard Model physics working group, and explore their physics reach and the impact that CERN could have in the next 10-20 years on the international landscape.

Compilation of spectroscopic data of Radium (Ra I and Ra II)

Energy levels, wavelengths, lifetimes and hyperfine structure constants for the isotopes of the first and second spectra of radium, Ra I and Ra II have been compiled. Wavelengths and wave numbers are tabulated for 226Ra and for other Ra isotopes. Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure constants of even and odd-A isotopes of neutral radium atom and singly ionized radium are included. Experimental lifetimes of the states for both neutral and ionic Ra are also added, where available. The information is beneficial for present and future experiments aimed at different physics motivations using neutral Ra and singly ionized Ra.

Test of Lorentz invariance in $β$ decay of polarized $^{20}\text{Na}$

We search for a dependence of the lifetime of $^{20}\text{Na}$ nuclei on the nuclear spin direction. Such a directional dependence would be evidence for Lorentz-invariance violation in weak interactions. A difference in lifetime between nuclei that are polarized in the east and west direction is searched for. This difference is maximally sensitive to the rotation of the Earth, while the sidereal dependence is free from most systematic errors. The experiment sets a limit of $2\times 10^{-4}$ at 90 % C.L. on the amplitude of the sidereal variation of the relative lifetime differences, an improvement by a factor 15 compared to an earlier result.

Determination of transition frequencies in a single $^{138}$Ba$^{+}$ ion

Transition frequencies between low-lying energy levels in a single trapped $^{138}$Ba$^{+}$ ion have been measured with laser spectroscopy referenced to an optical frequency comb. By extracting the frequencies of one-photon and two-photon components of the line shape using an eight-level optical Bloch model, we achieved 0.1 MHz accuracy for the 5d $^{2}$D$_{3/2}$ - 6p $^{2}$P$_{1/2}$ and 6s $^{2}$S$_{1/2}$ - 5d $^{2}$D$_{3/2}$ transition frequencies, and 0.2 MHz for the 6s $^{2}$S$_{1/2}$ - 6p $^{2}$P$_{1/2}$ transition frequency.

Absolute frequency measurement of the 7s$^2$ $^1$S$_0$ $-$ 7s7p $^{1}$P$_1$ transition in $^{225}$Ra

Transition frequencies were determined for transitions in Ra in an atomic beam and for reference lines in Te$_2$ molecules in a vapor cell. The absolute frequencies were calibrated against a GPS stabilized Rb-clock by means of an optical frequency comb. The 7s$^2\,^1$S$_0$(F = 1/2)-7s7p$\,^1$P$_1$(F = 3/2) transition in $^{225}$Ra was determined to be $621\,042\,124(2)\,$MHz. The measurements provide input for designing efficient and robust laser cooling of Ra atoms in preparation of a search for a permanent electric dipole moment in Ra isotopes.

Effect of soil temperature on one-way optical frequency transfer through dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing fibre links

Results of optical frequency transfer over a carrier-grade dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) optical fibre network are presented. The relation between soil temperature changes on a buried optical fibre and frequency changes of an optical carrier through the fibre is modelled. Soil temperatures, measured at various depths by the Royal Netherlands Meteorology Institute (KNMI) are compared with observed frequency variations through this model. A comparison of a nine-day record of optical frequency measurements through the 2 x 298 km fibre link with soil temperature data shows qualitative agreement. A soil temperature model is used to predict the link stability over longer periods (days-months-years). We show that one-way optical frequency dissemination is sufficiently stable to distribute and compare e.g. rubidium frequency standards over standard DWDM optical fibre networks.

Measurement of the half-life of the T=$\frac{1}{2}$ mirror decay of $^{19}$Ne and its implication on physics beyond the standard model

The $\frac{1}{2}^+ \rightarrow \frac{1}{2}^+$ superallowed mixed mirror decay of $^{19}$Ne to $^{19}$F is excellently suited for high precision studies of the weak interaction. However, there is some disagreement on the value of the half-life. In a new measurement we have determined this quantity to be $T_{1/2}$ = $17.2832 \pm 0.0051_{(stat)}$ $\pm 0.0066_{(sys)}$ s, which differs from the previous world average by 3 standard deviations. The impact of this measurement on limits for physics beyond the standard model such as the presence of tensor currents is discussed.

Traveling-wave deceleration of SrF molecules

We report on the production, deceleration and detection of a SrF molecular beam. The molecules are captured from a supersonic expansion and are decelerated in the X$^2Σ^+ (v=0, N=1)$ state. We demonstrate the removal of up to 40% of the kinetic energy with a 2 meter long modular traveling-wave decelerator. Our results demonstrate a crucial step towards the preparation of ultracold gases of heavy diatomic molecules for precision spectroscopy.

A new approach to test Lorentz invariance

Lorentz invariance in the weak interaction has been tested rather poorly compared to the electromagnetic interaction. In this work we show which tests on the weak interaction should be considered. We focus on one particular test that explores the spin degree of freedom in β decay. To connect various phenomenological tests of Lorentz invariance in the weak interaction, we exploit a new theoretical model that may provide a framework that relates the different tests.

First Test of Lorentz Invariance in the Weak Decay of Polarized Nuclei

A new test of Lorentz invariance in the weak interactions has been made by searching for variations in the decay rate of spin-polarized 20Na nuclei. This test is unique to Gamow-Teller transitions, as was shown in the framework of a recently developed theory that assumes a Lorentz symmetry breaking background field of tensor nature. The nuclear spins were polarized in the up and down direction, putting a limit on the amplitude of sidereal variations of the form |(Γ_{up} - Γ_{down})| / (Γ_{up} + Γ_{down}) < 3 * 10^{-3}. This measurement shows a possible route toward a more detailed testing of Lorentz symmetry in weak interactions.

Isotope Shifts of the $6d\,^2$D$_{3/2}\,$ - $7p\,^2$P$_{1/2}\,$ Transition in Trapped Short-Lived $^{209-214}$Ra$^+$

Laser spectroscopy of short-lived radium isotopes in a linear Paul trap has been performed. The isotope shifts of the $6d\,^2$D$_{3/2}\,$ - $7p\,^2$P$_{1/2}\,$ transition in $^{209-214}$Ra$^+$ were measured, which are sensitive to the short range part of the atomic wavefunctions. The results are essential experimental input for improving the precision of atomic structure calculation. This is indispensable for parity violation in Ra$^+$ aiming at the determination of the weak mixing angle.

Radium single-ion optical clock

We explore the potential of the electric quadrupole transitions $7s\,^2S_{1/2}$ - $6d\,^2D_{3/2}$, $6d\,^2D_{5/2}$ in radium isotopes as single-ion optical frequency standards. The frequency shifts of the clock transitions due to external fields and the corresponding uncertainties are calculated. Several competitive $^A$Ra$^+$ candidates with $A=$ 223 - 229 are identified. In particular, we show that the transition $7s\,^2S_{1/2}\,(F=2,m_F=0)$ - $6d\,^2D_{3/2}\,(F=0,m_F=0)$ at 828 nm in $^{223}$Ra$^+$, with no linear Zeeman and electric quadrupole shifts, stands out as a relatively simple case, which could be exploited as a compact, robust, and low-cost atomic clock operating at a fractional frequency uncertainty of $10^{-17}$. With more experimental effort, the $^{223,225,226}$Ra$^+$ clocks could be pushed to a projected performance reaching the $10^{-18}$ level.

On-line Excited-State Laser Spectroscopy of Trapped Short-Lived Ra$^+$ Ions

As an important step towards an atomic parity violation experiment in one single trapped Ra$^+$ ion, laser spectroscopy experiments were performed with on-line produced short-lived $^{212,213,214}$Ra$^+$ ions. The isotope shift of the $6\,^2$D$_{3/2}$\,-\,$7\,^2$P$_{1/2}$ and $6\,^2$D$_{3/2}$\,-\,$7\,^2$P$_{3/2}$ transitions and the hyperfine structure constant of the $7\,^2$S$_{1/2}$ and $6\,^2$D$_{3/2}$ states in $^{213}$Ra$^+$ were measured. These values provide a benchmark for the required atomic theory. A lower limit of $232(4)$ ms for the lifetime of the metastable $6\,^2$D$_{5/2}$ state was measured by optical shelving.

The beta-gamma decay of 21Na

A new and independent determination of the Gamow-Teller branching ratio in the beta-decay of 21Na is reported. The value obtained of 5.13 +- 0.43 % is in agreement with the currently adopted value and the most recent measurement. In contrast to previous experiments, the present method was based on the counting of the parent 21Na ions and the resulting 351 keV gamma-rays without coincident beta-particle detection.

An Improved Limit on the Muon Electric Dipole Moment

Three independent searches for an electric dipole moment (EDM) of the positive and negative muons have been performed, using spin precession data from the muon g-2 storage ring at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Details on the experimental apparatus and the three analyses are presented. Since the individual results on the positive and negative muon, as well as the combined result, d=-0.1(0.9)E-19 e-cm, are all consistent with zero, we set a new muon EDM limit, |d| < 1.9E-19 e-cm (95% C.L.). This represents a factor of 5 improvement over the previous best limit on the muon EDM.

Magneto optical trapping of Barium

First laser cooling and trapping of the heavy alkaline earth element barium has been achieved based on the strong 6s$^2$ $^1$S$_0$ - 6s6p $^1$P$_1$ transition for the main cooling. Due to the large branching into metastable D-states several additional laser driven transitions are required to provide a closed cooling cycle. A total efficiency of $0.4(1) \cdot 10^{-2}$ for slowing a thermal atomic beam and capturing atoms into a magneto optical trap was obtained. Trapping lifetimes of more than 1.5 s were observed. This lifetime is shortened at high laser intensities by photo ionization losses. The developed techniques will allow to extend significantly the number of elements that can be optically cooled and trapped.

A New Measurement of the Muon Magnetic Anomaly

The muon magnetic anomaly may contain contributions from physics beyond the standard model. At the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) a precision experiment aims for a measurement of the muon magnetic anomaly $a_μ$ to 0.35 ppm, where conclusions about various theoretical approaches beyond standard theory can be expected. The difference between the spin precession and cyclotron frequencies is measured in a magnetic storage ring with highly homogeneous field. Data taking is in progress and part of all recorded data has been analyzed. Combining all experimental results to date yields preliminarily $a_μ(expt)=1~165~921(5) \cdot 10^{-9}$ (4 ppm) in agreement with standard theory.

Pressure dependence of the Mg $3s4s^3S_1 \to 3s3p^3P_{0,1,2}$ transition in superfluid $^4$He

The pressure shifts of the $3s4s^3S_1 \to 3s3p^3P_{0,1,2}$ transition of magnesium atoms immersed in superfluid helium have been measured at $(1.3\pm0.1 )$K between saturated vapour pressure and $24 $bar. The wavelength is blue shifted linearly by $(0.07\pm0.01) \frac{nm}{bar}$. This value can be satisfactorily described in the framework of the standard bubble model.

Measurement of the 1s-2s energy interval in muonium

The 1s-2s interval has been measured in the muonium ({$μ^+e^-$}) atom by Doppler-free two-photon laser spectroscopy. The frequency separation of the states was determined to be 2 455 528 941.0(9.8) MHz in good agreement with quantum electrodynamics. The muon-electron mass ratio can be extracted and is found to be 206.768 38(17). The result may be interpreted as measurement of the muon-electron charge ratio as $-1- 1.1(2.1)\cdot 10^{-9}$.

High resolution spectroscopy of muonium

The hydrogen-like muonium atom ($μ^+e^-$) consists of a positive muon ($μ^+$) and an electron ($e^-$). Since it was first observed by Hughes et al. in 1960, a series of precision experiments could be carried out testing bound state Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and the nature of the muon as a point-like leptonic particle. Precision values for fundamental constants could be obtained, including the fine structure constant $α$ and the muon's magnetic moment $μ_μ$. Since no internal structure could be revealed for leptons down to dimensions of $10^{-18}$m, the accuracy of theoretical calculations of term energies is higher than for the natural hydrogen atom and its isotopes deuterium and tritium as well as exotic hydrogen-like systems which contain hadrons. Internal structure effects of these particles spoil the precision of theoretical results. Of particular interest for precision muonium experiments, which are carried out in order to test standard theory and to extract accurate values for fundamental constants, are the ground state hyperfine structure splitting $Δν_{HFS}$ and the 1s-2s interval $Δν_{1s2s}$. Both cases involve the n=1 ground state in which the atoms can be produced in sufficient quantities.

High-Precision Storage Ring for g-2 of the Muon and Possible Applications in Particle and Heavy Ion Physics

A new superferric magnetic storage ring with highly homogeneous field at 1.45 T and weak electrostatic focussing is described which has been set up at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), USA, for a precision measurement of the magnetic anomaly of the muon. The toroidal storage volume has a radius of 7 m and a diameter of 9 cm. Precision magnetic field determination based on pulsed NMR on protons in H$_2$O yields the field to better than 0.1 ppm everywhere within the storage region. Follow on experiments using the setup have been already suggested to search for a finite mass of the muon neutrino and to search for an electric dipole moment of the muon with significantly increased accuracy. The high homogeneity of the field suggests the usage of such devices as a mass spectrometer for heavier particles as well.

Improved upper limit on Muonium to Antimuonium Conversion

A new experiment has been set up at the Paul Scherrer Institut to search for muonium to antimuonium conversion. No event was found to fulfil the requested signature which consists of the coincident detection of both constituents of the antiatom in its decay. Assuming an effective (V-A)$\times$(V-A) type interaction an improved upper limit is established for the conversion probability of ${\rm P_{M\bar{M}}} \leq 8 \cdot 10^{-9}$ (90%C.L.), which is almost two orders of magnitude lower compared to previous results and provides a sensitive test for theoretical extensions of the standard model.

Increased Sensitivity to Possible Muonium to Antimuonium Conversion

A new experimental search for muonium-antimuonium conversion was conducted at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Villigen, Switzerland. The preliminary analysis yielded one event fulfilling all required criteria at an expected background of 1.7(2) events due to accidental coincidences. An upper limit for the conversion probability in 0.1 T magnetic field is extracted as $8 \cdot 10^{-11}$ (90% CL).

Resonant 3--photon ionization of hydrogenic atoms by non-monochromatic laser field

We present ionization probability and line shape calculations for the two-step 3-photon ionization process, $1S \stackrel{2\hbar ω}{\longrightarrow}2S \stackrel{\hbar ω}{\longrightarrow}εP $, of the ground state of hydrogenic atoms in a non-monochromatic laser field with a time--dependent amplitude. Within the framework of a three--level model, the {\it AC Stark} shifts and non-zero ionization rates of all states involved were taken into account together with spatial and temporal inhomogeneities of the laser signal. In contrast with the usual perturbative technique, the time evolution of the atomic states was simulated by direct numerically solving the system of coupled time--dependent inhomogeneous differential equations, being equivalent to the appropriate non-stationary Schrödinger equation. Particular numerical results were obtained for typical parameters of the pulsed laser field that are employed in a new experiment to measure the $1S-2S$ energy separation in muonium at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. The shifts and asymmetries of the photoionization line shapes revealed may be of relevance for ultra-high precision experiments in hydrogen in CW laser fields.

Results from recent searches for muonium-- antimuonium conversion and future perspectives

A positive muon ($μ^+$) and an electron ($e^-$) form the the hydrogen-like muonium atom ($M$=$μ^+ e^-$). Since it consists of two leptonic particles which are according to present knowledge point-like, accurate calculations of its level energies can be performed in the framework of standard theory. In particular, the theoretical description of this system is possible almost exclusively by Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) which has been verified in various very high precision experiments. Due to the close confinement of the bound state the muonium atom renders in addition the possibility for sensitive searches for electron--muon interactions not included in the standard model. Such exotic processes could affect the energy of the quantum states at a level of the same order of magnitude as the precision achievable in modern spectroscopic experiments.Oscillations between muonium and antimuonium ($\bar{M}$=$μ^- e^+$) would violate separate additive lepton number conservation which is a purely empirical law.

Results from Searching for Muonium to Antimuonium Conversion

A new result from searching for muonium to antimuonium conversion is reported which sets an upper limit on the coupling constant in an assumed $(V-A) \times (V-A)$ type interaction of $G_{M\bar{M}} \leq 3\cdot 10^{-3} G_F$ ~ (90% C.L.). A particular Z_8 and a minimal 331 GUT model can be ruled out. Further new and stringent limits can be set for masses of bileptonic gauge bosons and $λ$ parameters in R-parity breaking supersymmetric models.

The Muonium Atom as a Probe of Physics beyond the Standard Model

The observed interactions between particles are not fully explained in the successful theoretical description of the standard model to date. Due to the close confinement of the bound state muonium ($M = μ^+ e^-$) can be used as an ideal probe of quantum electrodynamics and weak interaction and also for a search for additional interactions between leptons. Of special interest is the lepton number violating process of sponteanous conversion of muonium to antimuonium.
