Measurement and simulation of atomic motion in nanoscale optical trapping potentials

Atoms trapped in the evanescent field around a nanofiber experience strong coupling to the light guided in the fiber mode. However, due to the intrinsically strong positional dependence of the coupling, thermal motion of the ensemble limits the use of nanofiber trapped atoms for some quantum tasks. We investigate the thermal dynamics of such an ensemble by using short light pulses to make a spatially inhomogeneous population transfer between atomic states. As we monitor the wave packet of atoms created by this scheme, we find a damped oscillatory behavior which we attribute to sloshing and dispersion of the atoms. Oscillation frequencies range around 100 kHz, and motional dephasing between atoms happens on a timescale of 10 $μ$s. Comparison to Monte Carlo simulations of an ensemble of 1000 classical particles yields reasonable agreement for simulated ensemble temperatures between 25 $μ$K and 40 $μ$K.

Heater self-calibration technique for shape prediction of fiber tapers

In the production of tapered optical fibers, it is important to control the fiber shape according to application-dependent requirements and to ensure adiabatic tapers. Especially in the transition regions, the fiber shape depends on the heater properties. The axial viscosity profile of the fiber within the heater can, however, be hard to access and is therefore often approximated by assuming a uniform temperature distribution. We present a method for easy experimental calibration of the viscosity profile within the heater. This allows the determination of the resultant fiber shape for arbitrary pulling procedures, using only an additional camera and the fiber drawing setup itself. We find very good agreement between the modeled and measured fiber shape.

Entanglement-assisted atomic clock beyond the projection noise limit

We use a quantum non-demolition measurement to generate a spin squeezed state and to create entanglement in a cloud of 10^5 cold cesium atoms, and for the first time operate an atomic clock improved by spin squeezing beyond the projection noise limit in a proof-of-principle experiment. For a clock-interrogation time of 10 μ\s the experiments show an improvement of 1.1 dB in the signal-to-noise ratio, compared to the atomic projection noise limit.

Versatile Digital GHz Phase Lock for External Cavity Diode Lasers

We present a versatile, inexpensive and simple optical phase lock for applications in atomic physics experiments. Thanks to all-digital phase detection and implementation of beat frequency pre-scaling, the apparatus requires no microwave-range reference input, and permits phase locking at frequency differences ranging from sub-MHz to 7 GHz (and with minor extension, to 12 GHz). The locking range thus covers ground state hyperfine splittings of all alkali metals, which makes this system a universal tool for many experiments on coherent interaction between light and atoms.
