PixelFolder: An Efficient Progressive Pixel Synthesis Network for Image Generation

Pixel synthesis is a promising research paradigm for image generation, which can well exploit pixel-wise prior knowledge for generation. However, existing methods still suffer from excessive memory footprint and computation overhead. In this paper, we propose a progressive pixel synthesis network towards efficient image generation, coined as PixelFolder. Specifically, PixelFolder formulates image generation as a progressive pixel regression problem and synthesizes images via a multi-stage structure, which can greatly reduce the overhead caused by large tensor transformations. In addition, we introduce novel pixel folding operations to further improve model efficiency while maintaining pixel-wise prior knowledge for end-to-end regression. With these innovative designs, we greatly reduce the expenditure of pixel synthesis, e.g., reducing 89% computation and 53% parameters compared with the latest pixel synthesis method CIPS. To validate our approach, we conduct extensive experiments on two benchmark datasets, namely FFHQ and LSUN Church. The experimental results show that with much less expenditure, PixelFolder obtains new state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on two benchmark datasets, i.e., 3.77 FID and 2.45 FID on FFHQ and LSUN Church, respectively.Meanwhile, PixelFolder is also more efficient than the SOTA methods like StyleGAN2, reducing about 72% computation and 31% parameters, respectively. These results greatly validate the effectiveness of the proposed PixelFolder.

Semiconductor-like photocarrier dynamics in Dirac Semimetal Cd3As2 film Probed with transient Terahertz Spectroscopy

The topological three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 has drawn great attention for the novel physics and promising applications in optoelectronic devices operating in the infrared and THz regimes. Among the extensive studies in the past decades, one intriguing debate is the underlined mechanism that governing the nonequilibrium carrier dynamics following photoexcitation. In this study, the temperature dependent photocarrier dynamics in Cd3As2 film has been investigated with time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy. The experimental results demonstrate that photoexcitation results in abrupt increase in THz photoconductivity, and the subsequent relaxation shows a single exponential relaxation for various temperatures and pump fluences. The relaxation time increase from 4.7 ps at 5 K to 7.5 ps at 220 K, while the lifetime remains almost constant of ~7.5 ps with temperature above 220 K. A Rothwarf-Taylor model was employed to fit the temperature dependent relaxation time, and a narrow energy gap of ~35 meV is obtained, which occurs around the Dirac node. Our THz spectroscopy results demonstrate that the photocarrier relaxation in Cd3As2 shows a semiconductor-like behavior, rather than hot carrier scatterings in graphene and most of metals.

Observational Signature and Additional Photon Rings of Asymmetric Thin-shell Wormhole

Recently, a distinct shadow mechanism was proposed by Wang et al. from the asymmetric thin-shell wormhole (ATW) in [Phys. Lett. B 811 (2020) 135930]. On the other hand, Gralla et al's work [Phys. Rev. D 100 (2019) 2, 024018] represented a nice description of photon rings in the presence of an accretion disk around a black hole. In this paper, we are inspired to thoroughly investigate the observational appearance of an accretion disk around the ATW. Although the spacetime outside an ATW with a throat could be identical to that containing a black hole with its event horizon, we show evident additional photon rings from the ATW spacetime. Moreover, a potential lensing band between two highly demagnified photon rings is found. Our analysis provides an optically observational signature to distinguish ATWs from black holes.

A novel method for constructing high accurate and robust WENO-Z type scheme

A novel method for constructing robust and high-order accurate weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme is proposed in this paper. The method is mainly based on the WENO-Z type scheme, in which, an eighth-order global smoothness indicator (the square of the approximation of the fourth-order derivative on the five-point stencil used by the fifth-order WENO scheme) is used, and in order to keep the ENO property and robustness, the constant 1 used to calculate the un-normalized weights is replaced by a function of local smoothness indicators of candidate sub-stencils. This function is designed to have following adaptive property: if the five-point stencil contains a discontinuity, then the function approaches to a small value, otherwise, it approaches to a large value. Analysis and numerical results show that the resulted WENO-Z type (WENO-ZN) scheme is robust for capturing shock waves and, in smooth regions, achieves fifth-order accuracy at first-order critical point and fourth-order accuracy at second-order critical point.

Stable, non-singular bouncing universe with only a scalar mode

In this paper, we study a class of higher derivative, non-local gravity which admits homogeneous and isotropic non-singular, bouncing universes in the absence of matter. At the linearized level, the theory propagates only a scalar degree of freedom, and no vector or tensor modes. The scalar can be made free from perturbative ghost instabilities, and has oscillatory and bounded evolution across the bounce.

Study on the magnetic measurement results of the injection system for CSNS/RCS

A combination of the H- stripping and phase space painting method is used to accumulate a high intensity beam in the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). The injection system for CSNS/RCS consists of three kinds of magnets: four direct current magnets (BC1-BC4), eight alternating current magnets (BH1-BH4 and BV1-BV4), two septum magnets (ISEP1 and ISEP2). In this paper, the magnetic measurements of the injection system were introduced and the data analysis was processed. The field uniformity and magnetizing curves of these magnets were given, and then the magnetizing fitting equations were obtained.

Determining phase-space properties of the IHEP RFQ output beam using the RMS beam widths from wire-scanners

A beam line is built after the IHEP RFQ for halo study. To determine transverse emittance and ellipse parameters of the RFQ output beam, beam size data obtained from the first two of 14 wire scanners are employed. By using the transfer matrix method and the least square method, a set of linear equations were set up and solved. The solutions were then applied as initial beam parameters in multi-particle simulations to check the method of calculation. It is shown that difference between the simulated RMS beam size and the measured one at the measurement location is less than 7%, which is acceptable in our experiments.
