Effect of dilute, strongly pinning impurities on charge density waves

We study theoretically the effects of strong pinning centers on a charge density wave in the limit that the charge density wave coherence length is shorter than the average inter-impurity distance. An analysis based on a Ginzburg-Landau model shows that long range forces arising from the elastic response of the charge density wave induce a kind of collective pinning which suppresses impurity-induced phase fluctuations leading to a long ranged ordered ground state. The effective correlations among impurities are characterized by a length scale parametrically longer than the average inter-impurity distance. The thermal excitations are found to be gapped implying the stability of the ground state. We also present Monte Carlo simulations that confirm the basic features of the analytical results.

Experimental evidence for a Bragg glass density wave phase in a transition-metal dichalcogenide

Analysis of the spatial dependence of current-voltage characteristics obtained from scanning tunneling microscopy experiments indicates that the charge density wave (CDW) occurring in NbSe$_2$ is subject to locally strong pinning by a non-negligible density of defects, but that on the length scales accessible in this experiment the material is in a "Bragg glass" phase where dislocations and anti-dislocations occur in bound pairs and free dislocations are not observed. A Landau theory-based analysis is presented showing how a strong local modulation may produce only a weak long range effect on the CDW phase.

One-dimensional physics in transition-metal nanowires: Phases and elementary excitations

We used the Hartree-Fock approximation to classify the electronic phases that might occur in a transition metal nanowire. The important features of this situation are orbital degeneracy (or near-degeneracy) and interactions favoring locally high-spin configurations. In this circumstance, spin density wave and triplet superconductivity states are favored. If the interactions favor locally low-spin configurations as in the previously studied spin ladder systems, orbital density wave and singlet superconductivity are observed.

One-dimensional physics in transition-metal nanowires: Renormalization group and bosonization analysis

We study the one-dimensional two-orbital Hubbard model with general local interactions including a pair-hopping term. The model might be realized in one-dimensional transition-metal nanowires. Phase diagrams at T=0 are obtained by numerical integration of renormalization group equations and bosonization. Particular attention is paid to the effects of orbital degeneracy (or near-degeneracy), interactions favoring locally high-spin configurations, and velocity differences. Dynamical symmetry enlargement and duality approaches are employed to determine ground states and to understand quantum phase transitions between them. An important result is that the pair-hopping term and associated orbital symmetry can lead to new insulating states. The ground state for spin-polarized case is also discussed.
