Electron-phonon mediated superconductivity in La$_6$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$ nickel oxides

Nickel oxide superconductors offer an alternative playground for understanding the formation of Cooper pairs in correlated materials such as the famous cuprates. By studying the La$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$ phase diagram on the basis of hybrid and spin-polarized density functional theory simulations, we reveal the existence of charge and bond ordered (CBO) insulating phases that are quenched by doping effects, ultimately resulting in a metallic phase at the n=5 member. Nevertheless, the phonons associated with the CBO identified in the phase diagram remain sufficiently large to mediate Cooper pairs in La$_6$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$, yielding a computed critical temperature between T$_c$=11-19K consistent with the 13K observed experimentally in Nd$_6$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$. Thus, in order to identify the superconducting mechanism, extracting the relevant instabilities in the doping phase diagram of superconductors appears critical.

A multiferroic two-dimensional electron gas

Multiferroics are compounds in which at least two ferroic orders coexist - typically (anti)ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity. While magnetic order can arise in both insulating and conducting compounds, ferroelectricity is in principle not allowed in metals although a few two-dimensional (semi)metals were reported to behave as ferroelectrics. Yet, the combination with magnetic order to realize multiferroic metals remains elusive. Here, by combining x-ray spectroscopy and magnetotransport, we show the coexistence of ferroelectricity and magnetism in an oxide-based two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The data evidence a non-volatile switching of the polar displacements and of the anomalous Hall effect by the polarization direction, demonstrating a magnetoelectric coupling. Our findings provide new opportunities in quantum matter stemming from the interplay between ferroelectricity, ferromagnetism and Rashba spin-orbit coupling in a 2DEG.

Origin of superconductivity in hole doped SrBiO3 bismuth oxide perovskite from parameter-free first-principles simulations

The recent discovery nickel oxides superconductors have highlighted the importance of first-principles simulations for understanding the formation of the bound electrons at the core of superconductivity. Nevertheless, superconductivity in oxides is often ascribed to strong electronic correlation effects that Density Functional Theory (DFT) cannot properly take into account, thereby disqualifying this technique. Being isostructural to nickel oxides, Sr1-xKxBiO3 superconductors form an ideal testbed for unveiling (i) the lowest theory level needed to model complex superconductors and (ii) the underlying pairing mechanism yielding superconductivity. Here I show that parameter-free DFT simulations capture all the experimental features and related quantities of Sr1-xKxBiO3 superconductors, encompassing the prediction of an insulating to metal phase transition upon increasing the K doping content and of an electron-phonon coupling constant of 1.22 in sharp agreement with the experimental value of 1.3 +/- 0.2. Proximity of a disproportionated phase is further demonstrated to be a prerequisite for superconductivity in bismuthates. This work highlights that appropriately executed DFT is a sufficient platform for studying superconductivity in complex oxides.

Bulk NdNiO2 is thermodynamically unstable with respect to decomposition while hydrogenation reduces the instability and transforms it from metal to insulator

Through CaH2 chemical reduction of a parent R3+Ni3+O3 perovskite form, superconductivity was recently achieved in Sr-doped NdNiO2 on SrTiO3 substrate. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we find that stoichiometric NdNiO2 is significantly unstable with respect to decomposition into 1/2[Nd2O3 + NiO + Ni] with exothermic decomposition energy of +176 meV/atom, a considerably higher instability than that for common ternary oxides. This poses the question if the stoichiometric NdNiO2 nickelate compound used extensively to model the electronic band structure of Ni-based oxide analog to cuprates and found to be metallic is the right model for this purpose. To examine this, we study via DFT the role of the common H impurity expected to be present in the process of chemical reduction needed to obtain NdNiO2. We find that H can be incorporated exothermically, i.e., spontaneously in NdNiO2, even from H2 gas. In the concentrated limit, such impurities can result in the formation of a hydride compound NdNiO2H, which has significantly reduced instability relative to hydrogen-free NdNiO2. Interestingly, the hydrogenated form has a similar lattice constant as the pure form (leading to comparable XRD patterns), but unlike the metallic character of NdNiO2, the hydrogenated form is predicted to be a wide gap insulator thus, requiring doping to create a metallic or superconducting state, just like cuprates, but unlike unhydrogenated nickelates. While it is possible that hydrogen would be eventually desorbed, the calculation suggests that pristine NdNiO2 is hydrogen-stabilized. One must exercise caution with theories predicting new physics in pristine stoichiometric NdNiO2 as it might be an unrealizable compound. Experimental examination of the composition of real NdNiO2 superconductors and the effect of hydrogen on the superconductivity is called for.

Dependence of band gaps in d-electron perovskite oxides on magnetism

Understanding the controlling principles of band gaps trends in d electron perovskites is needed both for gauging metal-insulator transitions, as well as their application in catalysis and doping. The magnitude of this band gap is rather different for different magnetic spin configurations. We find via electronic structure theory that the factors that connect gapping magnitudes to magnetism depend on the nature of the band edge orbital character (BEOC) and surprisingly scale with the number of antiferromagnetic contacts z$_i$ between neighboring transition metal ions. The dependence is weak when the BEOC are (d,d)-like ("Mott insulators"), whereas this dependence is rather strong in (p,d)-like ("charge transfer" insulators). These unexpected rules are traced to the reduced orbital interactions through the increase in the number of antiferromagnetic contacts between transition metal ions. The impact of magnetic order is not limited to the band gap magnitude and includes also the magnitude of lattice distortions connected to the electronic structure. These results highlight the importance of establishing in electronic structure theory of gap-related phenomena (doping, transport, metal-insulator transitions, conductive interfaces) the appropriate magnetic order.

Can we prevent the "dead layer" formation at manganite interfaces?

The present work theoretically studies the possibility to hinder the formation of a "dead" layer at the interfaces in manganite superlattices. We showed that this goal can be reached by using alkaline-earth simple oxides as alternating layers in very thin superlattices. Indeed, such alternating layer promotes the contraction of manganite layers at the interfaces and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ preferred $e_g$ orbital occupancy, while Boltzman's transport calculations show an increase in conductivity. This result hold for different manganites, different alkaline-earth simple oxides as well as different thicknesses of the two layers.

Electric field control of Jahn-Teller distortions in bulk perovskites

The Jahn-Teller distortion, by its very nature, is often at the heart of the various electronic properties displayed by perovskites and related materials. Despite the Jahn-Teller mode being non- polar in nature, we devise and demonstrate in the present letter an electric field control of Jahn-Teller distortions in bulk perovskites. The electric field control is enabled through an anharmonic lattice mode coupling between the Jahn-Teller distortion and a polar mode. We confirm this coupling, and explicitly an electric field effect, through first principles calculations. The coupling will always exist within the P b2 1 m space group, which is found to be the favoured ground state for various perovskites under sufficient tensile epitaxial strain. Intriguingly, the calculations reveal that this mechanism is not only restricted to Jahn-Teller active systems, promising a general route to tune or induce novel electronic functionality in perovskites as a whole.

Novel magneto-electric multiferroics from first-principles

Interest in first-principles calculations within the multiferroic community has been rapidly on the rise over the last decade. Initially considered as a powerful support to explain experimentally observed behaviours, the trend has evolved and, nowadays, density functional theory calculations has become also an essential predicting tool for identifying original rules to achieve multiferroism and design new magneto-electric compounds. This chapter aims to highlight the key advances in the field of multiferroics for which first-principles methods have contributed significantly. The essential theoretical developments that made this search possible are also briefly presented.

Analysis of the multiferroicity in the hexagonal manganite YMnO3

We performed magnetic and ferroelectric measurements, associated with Landau theory and symmetry analysis, in order to clarify the situation of the YMnO3 system, a classical example of type I multiferroics. We found that the only magnetic group compatible with all experimental data (neutrons scattering, magnetization, polarization, dielectric constant, second harmonic generation) is the P6'3 group. In this group a small ferromagnetic component along c is induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and observed here in SQUID magnetization measurements. We found that the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic components can only be switched simultaneously, while the magnetic orders are functions of the polarization square and therefore insensitive to its sign.

Improper ferroelectricity and multiferroism in 2HBaMnO$_3$

Using first-principles calculations, we study theoretically the stable 2H hexagonal structure of BaMnO3. We show that from the stable high temperature P63/mmc structure, the compound should exhibit an improper ferroelectric structural phase transition to a P63cm ground state. Combined with its antiferromagnetic properties, 2H-BaMnO3 is therefore expected to be multiferroic at low temperature. The phase transition mechanism in BaMnO3 appears similar to what was reported in YMnO3 in spite of totally different atomic arrangement, cation sizes and Mn valence state.

First principles calculation of the phonons modes in the hexagonal $\rm YMnO_3$ ferroelectric and paraelectric phases

The lattice dynamics of the $\rm YMnO_3$ magneto-electric compound has been investigated using density functional calculations, both in the ferroelectric and the paraelectric phases. The coherence between the computed and experimental data is very good in the low temperature phase. Using group theory, modes continuity and our calculations we were able to show that the phonons modes observed by Raman scattering at 1200K are only compatible with the ferroelectric $P6_{3} cm$ space group, thus supporting the idea of a ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition at higher temperature. Finally we proposed a candidate for the phonon part of the observed electro-magnon. This mode, inactive both in Raman scattering and in Infra-Red, was shown to strongly couple to the Mn-Mn magnetic interactions.

Role of the ferromagnetic component in the ferroelectricity of YMnO3

We performed magnetic and ferroelectric measurements, first principle calculations and Landau theory analysis on hexagonal YMnO3. The polarization and the AFM order parameter were found to present different temperature dependence at TN. A linear coupling between these two order parameters is thus forbidden in the Landau theory and P63cm cannot be the magnetic group. The only compatible magnetic group is P6'3. In this group however, Landau theory predicts the possibility of a ferromagnetic component and of a linear coupling between the dielectric constant and the AFM order parameter. On one hand we performed dielectric constant measurements under magnetic field that clearly exhibit a metamagnetic transition, and thus confirm these predictions. On the other hand careful magnetization measurements show a small by non null FM component along the c-axis direction. Finally the Landau analysis within the P6'3 magnetic group shows that only the polarization square is coupled to the magnetic orders and thus neither the magnetization nor the AFM order can be reversed by an applied electric field.

Accurate evaluation of magnetic coupling between atoms with numerous open-shells : an ab-initio method

We propose a new ab initio method designed for the accurate calculation of effective exchange integrals between atoms with numerous open-shells. This method applies to ferromagnetic as well as antiferromagnetic exchange, direct or ligand-mediated exchange. Test calculations on high spin transition metal oxides such as KNiF3, Ba2CoS3 or YMnO3 exhibit a very good accuracy compared either to the best ab initio calculations --when those are feasible-- and with experimental evaluations.
