Homogeneous actions on Urysohn spaces

We show that many countable groups acting on trees, including free products of infinite countable groups and surface groups, are isomorphic to dense subgroups of isometry groups of bounded Urysohn spaces. This extends previous results of the first and last author with Y. Stalder on dense subgroups of the automorphism group of the random graph. In the unbounded case, we also show that every free product of infinite countable groups arises as a dense subgroup of the isometry group of the rational Urysohn space.

Dense locally finite subgroups of Automorphism Groups of Ultraextensive Spaces

We verify a conjecture of Vershik by showing that Hall's universal countable locally finite group can be embedded as a dense subgroup in the isometry group of the Urysohn space and in the automorphism group of the random graph. In fact, we show the same for all automorphism groups of known infinite ultraextensive spaces. These include, in addition, the isometry group of the rational Urysohn space, the isometry group of the ultrametric Urysohn spaces, and the automorphism group of the universal $K_n$-free graph for all $n\geq 3$. Furthermore, we show that finite group actions on finite metric spaces or finite relational structures form a Fraïssé class, where Hall's group appears as the acting group of the Fraïssé limit. We also embed continuum many non-isomorphic countable universal locally finite groups into the isometry groups of various Urysohn spaces, and show that all dense countable subgroups of these groups are mixed identity free (MIF). Finally, we give a characterization of the isomorphism type of the isometry group of the Urysohn $Δ$-metric spaces in terms of the distance value set $Δ$.

Dynamical simplices and minimal homeomorphisms

We give a characterization of sets K of probability measures on a Cantor space X with the property that there exists a minimal homeomorphism g of X such that the set of g-invariant probability measures on X coincides with K. This extends theorems of Akin (corresponding to the case when K is a singleton) and Dahl (when K is finite-dimensional). Our argument is elementary and different from both Akin's and Dahl's.

Full groups of minimal homeomorphisms

We study full groups of minimal actions of countable groups by homeomorphisms on a Cantor space $X$, showing that these groups do not admit a compatible Polish group topology and, in the case of $\Z$-actions, are coanalytic non-Borel inside $\Homeo(X)$. We point out that the full group of a minimal homeomorphism is topologically simple. We also study some properties of the closure of the full group of a minimal homeomorphism inside $\Homeo(X)$.

Generic representations of abelian groups and extreme amenability

If $G$ is a Polish group and $Γ$ is a countable group, denote by $\Hom(Γ, G)$ the space of all homomorphisms $Γ\to G$. We study properties of the group $\cl{π(Γ)}$ for the generic $π\in \Hom(Γ, G)$, when $Γ$ is abelian and $G$ is one of the following three groups: the unitary group of an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, the automorphism group of a standard probability space, and the isometry group of the Urysohn metric space. Under mild assumptions on $Γ$, we prove that in the first case, there is (up to isomorphism of topological groups) a unique generic $\cl{π(Γ)}$; in the other two, we show that the generic $\cl{π(Γ)}$ is extremely amenable. We also show that if $Γ$ is torsion-free, the centralizer of the generic $π$ is as small as possible, extending a result of King from ergodic theory.

Polish topometric groups

We define and study the notion of \emph{ample metric generics} for a Polish topological group, which is a weakening of the notion of ample generics introduced by Kechris and Rosendal in \cite{Kechris-Rosendal:Turbulence}. Our work is based on the concept of a \emph{Polish topometric group}, defined in this article. Using Kechris and Rosendal's work as a guide, we explore consequences of ample metric generics (or, more generally, ample generics for Polish topometric groups). Then we provide examples of Polish groups with ample metric generics, such as the isometry group $\Iso(\bU_1)$ of the bounded Urysohn space, the unitary group ${\mathcal U}(\ell_2)$ of a separable Hilbert space, and the automorphism group $\Aut([0,1],λ)$ of the Lebesgue measure algebra on $[0,1]$. We deduce from this and earlier work of Kittrell and Tsankov that this last group has the automatic continuity property, i.e., any morphism from $\Aut([0,1],λ)$ into a separable topological group is continuous.
