Modification of electron-phonon coupling by micromachining and suspension

Weak electron-phonon interaction in metals at low temperatures forms the basis of operation for cryogenic hot-electron bolometers and calorimeters. Standard power laws, describing the heat flow in the majority of experiments, have been identified and derived theoretically. However, a full picture encompassing experimentally relevant effects such as reduced dimensionality, material interfaces, and disorder is in its infancy, and has not been tested extensively. Here, we study the electron-phonon heat flow in a thin gold film on a SiO${}_2$ platform below 100 mK using supercurrent thermometry. We find the power law exponent to be modified from 5.1 to 4.6 as the platform is micromachined and released from its substrate. We attribute this change to a modified phonon spectrum. The findings are compared to past experiments and theoretical models.

Fluctuation Relation for Qubit-Calorimetry

Motivated by proposed thermometry measurement on an open quantum system, we present a simple model of an externally driven qubit interacting with a finite sized, fermion environment acting as calorimeter. The derived dynamics is governed by a stochastic Schrödinger equation coupled to the temperature change of the calorimeter. We prove a fluctuation relation and deduce from it a notion of entropy production. Finally, we discuss the first and second law associated to the dynamics.

Traceable Coulomb Blockade Thermometry

We present a measurement and analysis scheme for determining traceable thermodynamic temperature at cryogenic temperatures using Coulomb blockade thermometry. The uncertainty of the electrical measurement is improved by utilizing two sampling digital voltmeters instead of the traditional lock-in technique. The remaining uncertainty is dominated by that of the numerical analysis of the measurement data. Two analysis methods are demonstrated: numerical fitting of the full conductance curve and measuring the height of the conductance dip. The complete uncertainty analysis shows that using either analysis method the relative combined standard uncertainty (k = 1) in determining the thermodynamic temperature in the temperature range from 20 mK to 200 mK is below 0.5 %. In this temperature range, both analysis methods produced temperature estimates that deviated from 0.39 % to 0.67 % from the reference temperatures provided by a superconducting reference point device calibrated against the Provisional Low Temperature Scale of 2000.

Nonequilibrium fluctuations in quantum heat engines: Theory, example, and possible solid state experiments

We study the stochastic energetic exchanges in quantum heat engines. Due to microreversibility, these obey a fluctuation relation, called the heat engine fluctuation relation, which implies the Carnot bound: no machine can have an efficiency larger than Carnot's efficiency. The stochastic thermodynamics of a quantum heat engine (including the joint statistics of heat and work and the statistics of efficiency) is illustrated by means of an optimal two-qubit heat engine, where each qubit is coupled to a thermal bath and a two-qubit gate determines energy exchanges between the two qubits. We discuss possible solid state implementations with Cooper pair boxes and flux qubits, quantum gate operations, and fast calorimetric on-chip measurements of single stochastic events.

Non-hysteretic superconducting quantum interference proximity transistor with enhanced responsivity

This letter presents fabrication and characterization of an optimized SQUIPT (superconducting quantum interference proximity transistor). The present device, characterized with reduced tunnel junction area and shortened normal-metal section, demonstrates no hysteresis at low temperatures as we increased the Josephson inductance of the weak link by decreasing its cross section. It has consequently almost an order of magnitude improved magnetic field responsivity as compared to the earlier design. The modulation of both the current and the voltage across the junction have been measured as a function of magnetic flux piercing the superconducting loop.

Fabrication of mesoscopic Nb wires using conventional e-beam lithographic techniques

Conventional electron beam lithography has been used to fabricate mesoscopic Nb wires with a superconducting transition temperature above 7.0 K. The typical line width and the thickness were 200 nm and 45 nm respectively. Nb was deposited in an ultra-high vacuum evaporation chamber using electron gun heating. All samples exhibited a normal-superconducting transition. The transition temperature decreased with thickness and line width. To demonstrate the feasibility of two angle evaporation techniques we also fabricated small Nb/(Al-)AlO_x/Nb tunnel junctions.
