A new proof of the description of the convex hull of space curves with totally positive torsion

We give new proofs of the description convex hulls of space curves $γ: [a,b] \mapsto \mathbb{R}^{d}$ having totally positive torsion. These are curves such that all the leading principal minors of $d\times d$ matrix $(γ', γ'', \ldots, γ^{(d)})$ are positive. In particular, we recover parametric representation of the boundary of the convex hull, different formulas for its surface area and the volume of the convex hull, and the solution to a general moment problem corresponding to $γ$.

Comparison of Ising Models Under Change of Apriori Measure

We study comparison of correlation functions for ferromagnetic generalized Ising models with two different apriori measures. One purpose of this note is to publicize some unpublished 45 year old work of Daniel Wells on the issue. We then prove results for the apriori measures associated to one component of D-vectors uniformly distributed on the unit sphere and also the case of spin S (2S +1 equally spaced values symmetric about 0 and with equal weights) that improves some 50 year old bounds of Griffiths on transition temperatures.

Continuity of the gradient of the fractional maximal operator on $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$

We establish that the map $f\mapsto |\nabla \mathcal{M}_αf|$ is continuous from $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ to $L^{q}(\mathbb{R}^d)$, where $α\in (0,d)$, $q=\frac{d}{d-α}$ and $\mathcal{M}_α$ denotes either the centered or non-centered fractional Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator. In particular, we cover the cases $d >1$ and $α\in (0,1)$ in full generality, for which results were only known for radial functions.

Improving estimates for discrete polynomial averages

For a polynomial $P$ mapping the integers into the integers, define an averaging operator $A_{N} f(x):=\frac{1}{N}\sum_{k=1}^N f(x+P(k))$ acting on functions on the integers. We prove sufficient conditions for the $\ell^{p}$-improving inequality \begin{equation*} \|A_N f\|_{\ell^q(\mathbb{Z})} \lesssim_{P,p,q} N^{-d(\frac{1}{p}-\frac{1}{q})} \|f\|_{\ell^p(\mathbb{Z})}, \qquad N \in\mathbb{N}, \end{equation*} where $1\leq p \leq q \leq \infty$. For a range of quadratic polynomials, the inequalities established are sharp, up to the boundary of the allowed pairs of $(p,q)$. For degree three and higher, the inequalities are close to being sharp. In the quadratic case, we appeal to discrete fractional integrals as studied by Stein and Wainger. In the higher degree case, we appeal to the Vinogradov Mean Value Theorem, recently established by Bourgain, Demeter, and Guth.

Sunrise strategy for the continuity of maximal operators

In this paper we address the $W^{1,1}$-continuity of several maximal operators at the gradient level. A key idea in our global strategy is the decomposition of a maximal operator, with the absence of strict local maxima in the disconnecting set, into "lateral" maximal operators with good monotonicity and convergence properties. This construction is inspired in the classical sunrise lemma in harmonic analysis. A model case for our sunrise strategy considers the uncentered Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator $\widetilde{M}$ acting on $W^{1,1}_{\rm rad}(\mathbb{R}^d)$, the subspace of $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ consisting of radial functions. In dimension $d\geq 2$ it was recently established by H. Luiro that the map $f \mapsto \nabla \widetilde{M} f$ is bounded from $W^{1,1}_{\rm rad}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ to $L^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$, and we show that such map is also continuous. Further applications of the sunrise strategy in connection with the $W^{1,1}$-continuity problem include non-tangential maximal operators on $\mathbb{R}^d$ acting on radial functions when $d\geq 2$ and general functions when $d=1$, and the uncentered Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$ acting on polar functions when $d\geq 2$ and general functions when $d=1$.

One-sided Band-limited Approximations of Some Radial Functions

We construct majorants and minorants of a Gaussian function in Euclidean space that have Fourier transforms supported in a box. The majorants that we construct are shown to be extremal and our minorants are shown to be asymptotically extremal as the sides of the box become uniformly large. We then adapt the Distribution and Gaussian Subordination methods of Carneiro-Littmann-Vaaler to the multidimensional setting to obtain majorants and minorants for a class of radial functions. Periodic analogues of the main results are proven and applications to Hilbert-type inequalities are given.
