A fractal local smoothing problem for the wave equation

For any given set $E\subset [1,2]$, we discuss a fractal frequency-localized version of the $L^p$ local smoothing estimates for the half-wave propagator with times in $E$. A conjecture is formulated in terms of a quantity involving the Assouad spectrum of $E$ and the Legendre transform. We validate the conjecture for radial functions. We also prove a similar result for fractal-time $L^2\to L^q$ and square function bounds, for arbitrary $L^2$ functions and general time sets. We formulate a conjecture for $L^p\to L^q$ generalizations.

Continuity of the gradient of the fractional maximal operator on $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$

We establish that the map $f\mapsto |\nabla \mathcal{M}_αf|$ is continuous from $W^{1,1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ to $L^{q}(\mathbb{R}^d)$, where $α\in (0,d)$, $q=\frac{d}{d-α}$ and $\mathcal{M}_α$ denotes either the centered or non-centered fractional Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator. In particular, we cover the cases $d >1$ and $α\in (0,1)$ in full generality, for which results were only known for radial functions.

The circular maximal operator on Heisenberg radial functions

Lebesgue space estimates are obtained for the circular maximal function on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$ restricted to a class of Heisenberg radial functions. Under this assumption, the problem reduces to studying a maximal operator on the Euclidean plane. This operator has a number of interesting features: it is associated to a non-smooth curve distribution and, furthermore, fails both the usual rotational curvature and cinematic curvature conditions.

Variable coefficient Wolff-type inequalities and sharp local smoothing estimates for wave equations on manifolds

The sharp Wolff-type decoupling estimates of Bourgain--Demeter are extended to the variable coefficient setting. These results are applied to obtain new sharp local smoothing estimates for wave equations on compact Riemannian manifolds, away from the endpoint regularity exponent. More generally, local smoothing estimates are established for a natural class of Fourier integral operators; at this level of generality the results are sharp in odd dimensions, both in terms of the regularity exponent and the Lebesgue exponent.

Subdyadic square functions and applications to weighted harmonic analysis

Through the study of novel variants of the classical Littlewood-Paley-Stein $g$-functions, we obtain pointwise estimates for broad classes of highly-singular Fourier multipliers on $\mathbb{R}^d$ satisfying regularity hypotheses adapted to fine (subdyadic) scales. In particular, this allows us to efficiently bound such multipliers by geometrically-defined maximal operators via general weighted $L^2$ inequalities, in the spirit of a well-known conjecture of Stein. Our framework applies to solution operators for dispersive PDE, such as the time-dependent free Schrödinger equation, and other highly oscillatory convolution operators that fall well beyond the scope of the Calderón-Zygmund theory.
