The moving frame method for iterated-integrals: orthogonal invariants

Geometric features, robust to noise, of curves in Euclidean space are of great interest for various applications such as machine learning and image analysis. We apply the Fels-Olver's moving frame method (for geometric features) paired with the log-signature transform (for robust features) to construct a set of integral invariants under rigid motions for curves in $\mathbb{R}^d$ from the iterated-integral signature. In particular we show that one can algorithmically construct a set of invariants that characterize the equivalence class of the truncated iterated-integrals signature under orthogonal transformations which yields a characterization of a curve in $\mathbb{R}^d$ under rigid motions (and tree-like extensions) and an explicit method to compare curves up to these transformations.

Pathwise stability of likelihood estimators for diffusions via rough paths

We consider the classical estimation problem of an unknown drift parameter within classes of nondegenerate diffusion processes. Using rough path theory (in the sense of T. Lyons), we analyze the Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE) with regard to its pathwise stability properties as well as robustness toward misspecification in volatility and even the very nature of the noise. Two numerical examples demonstrate the practical relevance of our results.

A Levy-area between Brownian motion and rough paths with applications to robust non-linear filtering and RPDEs

We give meaning to differential equations with a rough path term and a Brownian noise term as driving signals. Such differential equations as well as the question of regularity of the solution map arise naturally and we discuss two applications: one revisits Clark's robustness problem in nonlinear filtering, the other is a Feynman--Kac type representation of linear RPDEs. En passant, we give a short and direct argument that implies integrability estimates for rough differential equations with Gaussian driving signals which is of independent interest.

Rotation invariants of two dimensional curves based on iterated integrals

We introduce a novel class of rotation invariants of two dimensional curves based on iterated integrals. The invariants we present are in some sense complete and we describe an algorithm to calculate them, giving explicit computations up to order six. We present an application to online (stroke-trajectory based) character recognition. This seems to be the first time in the literature that the use of iterated integrals of a curve is proposed for (invariant) feature extraction in machine learning applications.

Stochastic control with rough paths

We study a class of controlled rough differential equations. It is shown that the value function satisfies a HJB type equation; we also establish a form of the Pontryagin maximum principle. Deterministic problems of this type arise in the duality theory for controlled diffusion processes and typically involve anticipating stochastic analysis. We propose a formulation based on rough paths and then obtain a generalization of Roger's duality formula [L. C. G. Rogers, 2007] from discrete to continuous time. We also make the link to old work of [Davis--Burstein, 1987].

Parabolic comparison revisited and applications

We consider the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem $\partial_t u - F(t,x,u,Du,D^2 u) = 0 on (0,T)\times \R^n$ in viscosity sense. Comparison is established for bounded semi-continuous (sub-/super-)solutions under structural assumption (3.14) of the User's Guide plus a mild condition on $F$ such as to cope with the unbounded domain. Comparison on $(0,T]$, space-time regularity and existence are also discussed. Our analysis passes through an extension of the parabolic theorem of sums which appears to be useful in its own right.

Backward stochastic differential equations with rough drivers

Backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) in the sense of Pardoux-Peng [Backward stochastic differential equations and quasilinear parabolic partial differential equations, Lecture Notes in Control and Inform. Sci., 176, 200--217, 1992] provide a non-Markovian extension to certain classes of non-linear partial differential equations; the non-linearity is expressed in the so-called driver of the BSDE. Our aim is to deal with drivers which have very little regularity in time. To this end we establish continuity of BSDE solutions with respect to rough path metrics in the sense of Lyons [Differential equations driven by rough signals. Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana 14, no. 2, 215--310, 1998] and so obtain a notion of "BSDE with rough driver". Existence, uniqueness and a version of Lyons' limit theorem in this context are established. Our main tool, aside from rough path analysis, is the stability theory for quadratic BSDEs due to Kobylanski [Backward stochastic differential equations and partial differential equations with quadratic growth. Ann. Probab., 28(2):558--602, 2000].
