Paired operators and paired kernels

This paper is concerned with paired operators in the context of the Lebesgue Hilbert space on the unit circle and its subspace, the Hardy space. By considering when such operators commute, generalizations of the Brown--Halmos results for Toeplitz operators are derived. Further, the kernels of such operators are described, giving results on invariant and nearly-invariant subspaces, together with a generalization of Coburn's theorem on Toeplitz kernels.

Multiplication by a finite Blaschke product on weighted Bergman spaces: commutant and reducing subspaces

We provide a characterization of the commutant of analytic Toeplitz operators $T_B$ induced by finite Blachke products $B$ acting on weighted Bergman spaces which, as a particular instance, yields the case $B(z)=z^n$ on the Bergman space solved recently by by Abkar, Cao and Zhu. Moreover, it extends previous results by Cowen and Wahl in this context and applies to other Banach spaces of analytic functions such as Hardy spaces $H^p$ for $1<p<\infty$. Finally, we apply this approach to study the reducing subspaces of $T_{B}$ in weighted Bergman spaces.

$L_2$ and BIBO stability of systems with variable delays

This paper considers $L_2$ and BIBO stability and stabilization issues for systems with time-varying delays which can be of retarded or neutral type. An important role is played by a nominal system with fixed delays which are close to the time-varying ones. Under stability or stabilizability conditions of this nominal system, sufficient conditions are given in order to ensure similar properties for the system with time-varying delays.

Kernels of unbounded Toeplitz operators and factorization of symbols

We consider kernels of unbounded Toeplitz operators in $H^p(\mathbb C^+)$ in terms of a factorization of their symbols. We study the existence of a minimal Toeplitz kernel containing a given function in $H^p(\mathbb C^+)$, we describe the kernels of Toeplitz operators whose symbol possesses a certain factorization involving two different Hardy spaces and we establish relations between the kernels of two operators whose symbols differ by a factor which corresponds, in the unit circle, to a non-integer power of $z$. We apply the results to describe the kernels of Toeplitz operators with non-vanishing piecewise continuous symbols.

Laplace--Carleson embeddings on model spaces and boundedness of truncated Hankel and Toeplitz operators

A characterisation is given of bounded embeddings from weighted $L^2$ spaces on bounded intervals into $L^2$ spaces on the half-plane, induced by isomorphisms given by the Laplace transform onto weighted Hardy and Bergman spaces (Zen spaces). As an application necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the boundedness of truncated Hankel and Toeplitz integral operators, including the weighted case.

Representing kernels of perturbations of Toeplitz operators by backward shift-invariant subspaces

It is well known that the kernel of a Toeplitz operator is nearly invariant under the backward shift $S^*$. This paper shows that kernels of finite-rank perturbations of Toeplitz operators are nearly $S^*$-invariant with finite defect. This enables us to apply a recent theorem by Chalendar--Gallardo--Partington to represent the kernel in terms of backward shift-invariant subspaces, which we identify in several important cases.

Scalar-type kernels for block Toeplitz operators

It is shown that the kernel of a Toeplitz operator with $2\times 2$ symbol $G$ can be described exactly in terms of any given function in a very wide class, its image under multiplication by $G$, and their left inverses, if the latter exist. As a consequence, under many circumstances the kernel of a block Toeplitz operator may be described as the product of a space of scalar complex-valued functions by a fixed column vector of functions. Such kernels are said to be of scalar type, and in this paper they are studied and described explicitly in many concrete situations. Applications are given to the determination of kernels of truncated Toeplitz operators for several new classes of symbols.

$β$-admissibility of observation and control operators for hypercontractive semigroups

We prove a Weiss conjecture on $β$-admissibility of control and observation operators for discrete and continuous $γ$-hypercontractive semigroups of operators, by representing them in terms of shifts on weighted Bergman spaces and using a reproducing kernel thesis for Hankel operators. Particular attention is paid to the case $γ=2$, which corresponds to the unweighted Bergman shift.

Asymmetric truncated Toeplitz operators and Toeplitz operators with matrix symbol

Truncated Toeplitz operators and their asymmetric versions are studied in the context of the Hardy space $H^p$ of the half-plane for $1<p<\infty$. It is shown that they are equivalent after extension to $2 \times 2$ matricial Toeplitz operators, which allows one to deduce information about their invertibility properties. Shifted model spaces are presented in the context of invariant subspaces, allowing one to deduce new Beurling--Lax theorems.

Applications of Laplace-Carleson embeddings to admissibility and controllability

It is shown how results on Carleson embeddings induced by the Laplace transform can be use to derive new and more general results concerning the weighted admissibility of control and observation operators for linear semigroup systems with q-Riesz bases of eigenvectors. Next, a new Carleson embedding result is proved, which gives further results on weighted admissibility for analytic semigroups. Finally, controllability by smoother inputs is characterised by means of a new result about weighted interpolation.

Weighted multiple interpolation and the control of perturbed semigroup systems

In this paper the controllabillity and admissibility of perturbed semigroup systems are studied, using tools from the theory of interpolation and Carleson measures. In addition, there are new results on the perturbation of Carleson measures and on the weighted interpolation of functions and their derivatives in Hardy spaces, which are of interest in their own right.
