Higher order transversality in harmonic analysis

In differential topology two smooth submanifolds $S_1$ and $S_2$ of euclidean space are said to be transverse if the tangent spaces at each common point together form a spanning set. The purpose of this article is to explore a much more general notion of transversality pertaining to a collection of submanifolds of euclidean space. In particular, we show that three seemingly different concepts of transversality arising naturally in harmonic analysis, are in fact equivalent. This result is an amalgamation of several recent works on variants of the Brascamp--Lieb inequality, and we take the opportunity here to briefly survey this growing area. This is not intended to be an exhaustive account, and the choices made reflect the particular perspectives of the authors.

Tomography bounds for the Fourier extension operator and applications

We explore the extent to which the Fourier transform of an $L^p$ density supported on the sphere in $\mathbb{R}^n$ can have large mass on affine subspaces, placing particular emphasis on lines and hyperplanes. This involves establishing bounds on quantities of the form $X(|\widehat{gdσ}|^2)$ and $\mathcal{R}(|\widehat{gdσ}|^2)$, where $X$ and $\mathcal{R}$ denote the X-ray and Radon transforms respectively; here $dσ$ denotes Lebesgue measure on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$, and $g\in L^p(\mathbb{S}^{n-1})$. We also identify some conjectural bounds of this type that sit between the classical Fourier restriction and Kakeya conjectures. Finally we provide some applications of such tomography bounds to the theory of weighted norm inequalities for $\widehat{gdσ}$, establishing some natural variants of conjectures of Stein and Mizohata--Takeuchi from the 1970s. Our approach, which has its origins in work of Planchon and Vega, exploits cancellation via Plancherel's theorem on affine subspaces, avoiding the conventional use of wave-packet and stationary-phase methods.

Subdyadic square functions and applications to weighted harmonic analysis

Through the study of novel variants of the classical Littlewood-Paley-Stein $g$-functions, we obtain pointwise estimates for broad classes of highly-singular Fourier multipliers on $\mathbb{R}^d$ satisfying regularity hypotheses adapted to fine (subdyadic) scales. In particular, this allows us to efficiently bound such multipliers by geometrically-defined maximal operators via general weighted $L^2$ inequalities, in the spirit of a well-known conjecture of Stein. Our framework applies to solution operators for dispersive PDE, such as the time-dependent free Schrödinger equation, and other highly oscillatory convolution operators that fall well beyond the scope of the Calderón-Zygmund theory.

Aspects of Multilinear Harmonic Analysis Related to Transversality

The purpose of this article is to survey certain aspects of multilinear harmonic analysis related to notions of transversality. Particular emphasis will be placed on the multilinear restriction theory for the euclidean Fourier transform, multilinear oscillatory integrals, multilinear geometric inequalities, multilinear Radon-like transforms, and the interplay between them.

Optimal control of singular Fourier multipliers by maximal operators

We control a broad class of singular (or "rough") Fourier multipliers by geometrically-defined maximal operators via general weighted $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ norm inequalities. The multipliers involved are related to those of Coifman--Rubio de Francia--Semmes, satisfying certain weak Marcinkiewicz-type conditions that permit highly oscillatory factors of the form $e^{i|ξ|^α}$ for both $α$ positive and negative. The maximal functions that arise are of some independent interest, involving fractional averages associated with tangential approach regions (related to those of Nagel and Stein), and more novel "improper fractional averages" associated with "escape" regions. Some applications are given to the theory of $L^p-L^q$ multipliers, oscillatory integrals and dispersive PDE, along with natural extensions to higher dimensions.

Weighted norm inequalities for oscillatory integrals with finite type phases on the line

We obtain two-weighted $L^2$ norm inequalities for oscillatory integral operators of convolution type on the line whose phases are of finite type. The conditions imposed on the weights involve geometrically-defined maximal functions, and the inequalities are best-possible in the sense that they imply the full $L^p(\mathbb{R})\rightarrow L^q(\mathbb{R})$ mapping properties of the oscillatory integrals. Our results build on work of Carbery, Soria, Vargas and the first author.

Heat-flow monotonicity related to the Hausdorff--Young inequality

It is known that if $q$ is an even integer then the $L^q(\mathbb{R}^d)$ norm of the Fourier transform of a superposition of translates of a fixed gaussian is monotone increasing as their centres "simultaneously slide" to the origin. We provide explicit examples to show that this monotonicity property fails dramatically if $q > 2$ is not an even integer. These results are equivalent, upon rescaling, to similar statements involving solutions to heat equations. Such considerations are natural given the celebrated theorem of Beckner concerning the gaussian extremisability of the Hausdorff--Young inequality.

The Fourier extension operator on large spheres and related oscillatory integrals

We obtain new estimates for a class of oscillatory integral operators with folding canonical relations satisfying a curvature condition. The main lower bounds showing sharpness are proved using Kakeya set constructions. As a special case of the upper bounds we deduce optimal $L^p(mathbb{S}^2)\to L^q(R \mathbb{S}^2)$ estimates for the Fourier extension operator on large spheres in $\mathbb{R}^3$, which are uniform in the radius $R$. Two appendices are included, one concerning an application to Lorentz space bounds for averaging operators along curves in $R^3$, and one on bilinear estimates.
