A fractal local smoothing problem for the wave equation

For any given set $E\subset [1,2]$, we discuss a fractal frequency-localized version of the $L^p$ local smoothing estimates for the half-wave propagator with times in $E$. A conjecture is formulated in terms of a quantity involving the Assouad spectrum of $E$ and the Legendre transform. We validate the conjecture for radial functions. We also prove a similar result for fractal-time $L^2\to L^q$ and square function bounds, for arbitrary $L^2$ functions and general time sets. We formulate a conjecture for $L^p\to L^q$ generalizations.

The circular maximal operator on Heisenberg radial functions

Lebesgue space estimates are obtained for the circular maximal function on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$ restricted to a class of Heisenberg radial functions. Under this assumption, the problem reduces to studying a maximal operator on the Euclidean plane. This operator has a number of interesting features: it is associated to a non-smooth curve distribution and, furthermore, fails both the usual rotational curvature and cinematic curvature conditions.

Homogeneous Fourier multipliers of Marcinkiewicz type

This 1995 paper contains a sharp version of the classical Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem for the class of homogeneous Fourier multipliers in two dimensions; here a one-dimensional Marcinkiewicz condition is sufficient. Examples are given to show that the straightforward extension of this statement to higher dimensions does not hold. We provide appropriate versions in higher dimensions which rely on a Fefferman-Stein weighted norm inequality for a relevant Córdoba type square function. The proof of this inequality is given by an early version of an induction on scales argument. For $p<1$ we prove a multiplier theorem on product-type $H^p$-spaces.

The Haar System in Triebel-Lizorkin Spaces: Endpoint Results

We characterize the Schauder and unconditional basis properties for the Haar system in the Triebel-Lizorkin spaces $F^s_{p,q}(\Bbb R^d)$, at the endpoint cases $s=1$, $s=d/p-d$ and $p=\infty$. Together with the earlier results in [10], [4], this completes the picture for such properties in the Triebel-Lizorkin scale, and complements a similar study for the Besov spaces given in [5].

A maximal function for families of Hilbert transforms along homogeneous curves

Let $H^{(u)}$ be the Hilbert transform along the parabola $(t, ut^2)$ where $u\in \mathbb R$. For a set $U$ of positive numbers consider the maximal function $\mathcal{H}^U \!f= \sup\{|H^{(u)}\! f|: u\in U\}$. We obtain an (essentially) optimal result for the $L^p$ operator norm of $\mathcal{H}^U$ when $2<p<\infty$. The results are proved for families of Hilbert transforms along more general nonflat homogeneous curves.

On pointwise convergence of Schrödinger means

For functions in the Sobolev space $H^s$ and decreasing sequences $t_n\to 0$ we examine convergence almost everywhere of the generalized Schrödinger means on the real line, given by \[S^af(x,t_n)=\exp( it_n (-\partial_{xx})^{a/2})f(x);\] here $a>0$, $a\neq 1$. For decreasing convex sequences we obtain a simple characterization of convergence a.e. for all functions in $H^s$ when $0<s<\min\{a/4,1/4\}$ and $a\neq 1$. We prove sharp quantitative local and global estimates for the associated maximal functions. We also obtain sharp results for the case $a=1$.

Spherical means on the Heisenberg group: Stability of a maximal function estimate

Consider the surface measure $μ$ on a sphere in a nonvertical hyperplane on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$, $n\ge 2$, and the convolution $f*μ$. Form the associated maximal function $Mf=\sup_{t>0}|f*μ_t|$ generated by the automorphic dilations. We use decoupling inequalities due to Wolff and Bourgain-Demeter to prove $L^p$-boundedness of $M$ in an optimal range.

On radial Fourier multipliers and almost everywhere convergence

We study a.e. convergence on $L^p$, and Lorentz spaces $L^{p,q}$, $p>\tfrac{2d}{d-1}$, for variants of Riesz means at the critical index $d(\tfrac 12-\tfrac 1p)-\tfrac12$. We derive more general results for (quasi-)radial Fourier multipliers and associated maximal functions, acting on $L^2$ spaces with power weights, and their interpolation spaces. We also include a characterization of boundedness of such multiplier transformations on weighted $L^2$ spaces, and a sharp endpoint bound for Stein's square-function associated with the Riesz means.

Problems on averages and lacunary maximal functions

We prove three results concerning convolution operators and lacunary maximal functions associated to dilates of measures. First, we obtain an $H^1$ to $L^{1,\infty}$ bound for lacunary maximal operators under a dimensional assumption on the underlying measure and an assumption on an $L^p$ regularity bound for some $p>1$. Secondly, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for $L^2$ boundedness of lacunary maximal operator associated to averages over convex curves in the plane. Finally we prove an $L^p$ regularity result for such averages. We formulate various open problems.

Restriction of Fourier transforms to curves: An endpoint estimate with affine arclength measure

Consider the Fourier restriction operator associated to a curve in $R^d$, $d\ge 3$. We prove for various classes of curves the endpoint restricted strong type estimate with respect to affine arclength measure on the curve. An essential ingredient is an interpolation result for multilinear operators with symmetries acting on sequences of vector-valued functions.

Square functions and maximal operators associated with radial Fourier multipliers

We begin with an overview on square functions for spherical and Bochner-Riesz means which were introduced by Eli Stein, and discuss their implications for radial multipliers and associated maximal functions. We then prove new endpoint estimates for these square functions, for the maximal Bochner-Riesz operator, and for more general classes of radial Fourier multipliers.

preprint2010arXiv

Extensions of the Stein-Tomas theorem

We prove an endpoint version of the Stein-Tomas restriction theorem, for a general class of measures, and with a strengthened Lorentz space estimate. A similar improvement is obtained for Stein's estimate on oscillatory integrals of Carleson-Sjölin-Hörmander type and some spectral projection operators on compact manifolds, and for classes of oscillatory integral operators with one-sided fold singularities.

Endpoint maximal and smoothing estimates for Schroedinger equations

For $α>1$ we consider the initial value problem for the dispersive equation $i\partial_t u +(-Δ)^{α/2} u= 0$. We prove an endpoint $L^p$ inequality for the maximal function $\sup_{t\in[0,1]}|u(\cdot,t)|$ with initial values in $L^p$-Sobolev spaces, for $p\in(2+4/(d+1),\infty)$. This strengthens the fixed time estimates due to Fefferman and Stein, and Miyachi. As an essential tool we establish sharp $L^p$ space-time estimates (local in time) for the same range of $p$.

Characterizations of Hankel multipliers

We give characterizations of radial Fourier multipliers as acting on radial L^p-functions, 1<p<2d/(d+1), in terms of Lebesgue space norms for Fourier localized pieces of the convolution kernel. This is a special case of corresponding results for general Hankel multipliers. Besides L^p-L^q bounds we also characterize weak type inequalities and intermediate inequalities involving Lorentz spaces. Applications include results on interpolation of multiplier spaces.

preprint2008arXiv

On plate decompositions of cone multipliers

An important inequality due to Wolff on plate decompositions of cone multipliers is known to have consequences for a variety of problems in harmonic analysis. We observe that the range in Wolff's inequality, for the conic and the spherical versions, can be improved by using bilinear restriction results. We also use this inequality to give some improved estimates on square functions associated to decompositions of cone multipliers in low dimensions. This gives a new L^4 bound for the cone multiplier operator in three dimensions.

preprint2008arXiv

Restriction of Fourier transforms to curves and related oscillatory integrals

We prove sharp endpoint results for the Fourier restriction operator associated to nondegenerate curves in $\Bbb R^d$, $d\ge 3$, and related estimates for oscillatory integral operators. Moreover, for some larger classes of curves in $\Bbb R^d$ we obtain sharp uniform $L^p\to L^q$ bounds with respect to affine arclength measure, thereby resolving a problem of Drury and Marshall.

preprint2008arXiv

Restriction of Fourier transforms to curves, II: Some classes with vanishing torsion

We consider the Fourier restriction operators associated to certain degenerate curves in R^d for which the highest torsion vanishes. We prove estimates with respect to affine arclength and with respect to the Euclidean arclength measure on the curve. The estimates have certain uniform features, and the affine arclength results cover families of flat curves.

preprint2006arXiv

The Fourier extension operator on large spheres and related oscillatory integrals

We obtain new estimates for a class of oscillatory integral operators with folding canonical relations satisfying a curvature condition. The main lower bounds showing sharpness are proved using Kakeya set constructions. As a special case of the upper bounds we deduce optimal $L^p(mathbb{S}^2)\to L^q(R \mathbb{S}^2)$ estimates for the Fourier extension operator on large spheres in $\mathbb{R}^3$, which are uniform in the radius $R$. Two appendices are included, one concerning an application to Lorentz space bounds for averaging operators along curves in $R^3$, and one on bilinear estimates.

Necessary conditions for vector-valued operator inequalities in harmonic analysis

Via a random construction we establish necessary conditions for $L^p(\ell^q)$ inequalities for certain families of operators arising in harmonic analysis. In particular we consider dilates of a convolution kernel with compactly supported Fourier transform, vector maximal functions acting on classes of entire functions of exponential type, and a characterization of Sobolev spaces by square functions and pointwise moduli of smoothness.

Singular spherical maximal operators on a class of two step nilpotent Lie groups

Let $H^n\cong \Bbb R^{2n}\ltimes \Bbb R$ be the Heisenberg group and let $μ_t$ be the normalized surface measure for the sphere of radius $t$ in $\Bbb R^{2n}$. Consider the maximal function defined by $Mf=\sup_{t>0} |f*μ_t|$. We prove for $n\ge 2$ that $M$ defines an operator bounded on $L^p(H^n)$ provided that $p>2n/(2n-1)$. This improves an earlier result by Nevo and Thangavelu, and the range for $L^p$ boundedness is optimal. We also extend the result to a more general setting of surfaces and to groups satisfying a nondegeneracy condition; these include the groups of Heisenberg type.

preprint2002arXiv

A family of singular oscillatory integral operators and failure of weak amenability

A locally compact group $G$ is said to be weakly amenable if the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ admits completely bounded approximative units. Consider the family of groups $G_n=SL(2,\Bbb R)\ltimes H_n$ where $n\ge 2$, $H_n$ is the $2n+1$ dimensional Heisenberg group and $SL(2,\Bbb R)$ acts via the irreducible representation of dimension $2n$ fixing the center of $H_n$. We show that these groups fail to be weakly amenable. Following an idea of Haagerup for the case $n=1$ one can reduce matters to the problem of obtaining nontrivial uniform bounds for a family of singular oscillatory integral operators with product type singularities and polynomial phases. The result on the family $G_n$ and various other previously known results are used to settle the question of weak amenability for a large class of Lie groups, including the algebraic groups; we assume that the Levi-part has finite center.

Spherical maximal operators on radial functions

Let $A_tf(x)=\int f(x+ty)dσ(y)$ denote the spherical means in $\Bbb R^d$ ($dσ$ is surface measure on $S^{d-1}$, normalized to $1$). We prove sharp estimates for the maximal function $M_E f(x)=\sup_{t\in E}|A_tf(x)|$ where $E$ is a fixed set in $\Bbb R^+$ and $f$ is a {\it radial} function $\in L^p(\Bbb R^d)$. Let $p_d=d/(d-1)$ (the critical exponent of Stein's maximal function). For the cases (i) $p<p_d$, $d\ge 2$ and (ii) $p=p_d$, $d\ge 3$, and for $p\le q\le\infty$ we prove necessary and sufficient conditions for $L^p\to L^{p,q}$ boundedness of the operator $M_E$.
