On Finite domination and Poincaré duality

The object of this paper is to show that non-homotopy finite Poincaré duality spaces are plentiful. Let $π$ be finitely presented group. Assuming that the reduced Grothendieck group $\tilde K_0(\Bbb Z[π])$ has a non-trivial 2-divisible element, we construct a finitely dominated Poincaré space $X$ with fundamental group $π$ such that $X$ is not homotopy finite. The dimension of $X$ can be made arbitrarily large. Our proof relies on a result which says that every finitely dominated space possesses a stable Poincaré duality thickening.

$K$-theoretic torsion and the zeta function

We generalize to higher algebraic $K$-theory an identity (originally due to Milnor) that relates the Reidemeister torsion of an infinite cyclic cover to its Lefschetz zeta function. Our identity involves a higher torsion invariant, the endomorphism torsion, of a parametrized family of endomorphisms as well as a higher zeta function of such a family. We also exhibit several examples of families of endomorphisms having non-trivial endomorphism torsion.

Stochastic Dynamics of Extended Objects in Driven Systems II: Current Quantization in the Low-Temperature Limit

Driven Langevin processes have appeared in a variety of fields due to the relevance of natural phenomena having both deterministic and stochastic effects. The stochastic currents and fluxes in these systems provide a convenient set of observables to describe their non-equilibrium steady states. Here we consider stochastic motion of a (k - 1)-dimensional object, which sweeps out a k-dimensional trajectory, and gives rise to a higher k-dimensional current. By employing the low-temperature (low-noise) limit, we reduce the problem to a discrete Markov chain model on a CW complex, a topological construction which generalizes the notion of a graph. This reduction allows the mean fluxes and currents of the process to be expressed in terms of solutions to the discrete Supersymmetric Fokker-Planck (SFP) equation. Taking the adiabatic limit, we show that generic driving leads to rational quantization of the generated higher dimensional current. The latter is achieved by implementing the recently developed tools, coined the higher-dimensional Kirchhoff tree and co-tree theorems. This extends the study of motion of extended objects in the continuous setting performed in the prequel to this manuscript.

Stochastic Dynamics of Extended Objects in Driven Systems: I. Higher-Dimensional Currents in the Continuous Setting

The probability distributions, as well as the mean values of stochastic currents and fluxes, associated with a driven Langevin process, provide a good and topologically protected measure of how far a stochastic system is driven out of equilibrium. By viewing a Langevin process on a compact oriented manifold of arbitrary dimension m as a theory of a random vector field associated with the environment, we are able to consider stochastic motion of higher-dimensional objects, which allow new observables, called higher-dimensional currents, to be introduced. These higher dimensional currents arise by counting intersections of a k-dimensional trajectory, produced by a evolving (k-1)-dimensional cycle, with a reference cross section, represented by a cycle of complimentary dimension (m - k). We further express the mean fluxes in terms of the solutions of the Supersymmetric Fokker-Planck (SFP), thus generalizing the corresponding well-known expressions for the conventional currents.

Embeddings, Normal Invariants and Functor Calculus

This paper investigates the space of codimension zero embeddings of a Poincare duality space in a disk. One of our main results exhibits a tower that interpolates from the space of Poincare immersions to a certain space of "unlinked" Poincare embeddings. The layers of this tower are described in terms of the coefficient spectra of the identity appearing in Goodwillie's homotopy functor calculus. We also answer a question posed to us by Sylvain Cappell. The appendix proposes a conjectural relationship between our tower and the manifold calculus tower for the smooth embedding space.

Charged Spaces

A charged space is a space equipped with two distinct base points. Such spaces arise as the unreduced suspension of an unbased space. More generally, one can work in the fiberwise setting over a fixed space B. A fiberwise charged space over B is a space X equipped with map to B and having two sections. One can ask whether or not a fiberwise charged space over B is a fiberwise suspension. We answer this question in a certain metastable range by producing a necessary and sufficient obstruction. As an application we show how this can be used to study when an embedding into a smooth manifold of the form N x I compresses to an embedding into N .

Fake Wedges

A fake wedge is a diagram of spaces K <- A -> C whose double mapping cylinder is contractible. The terminology stems from the special case A = K v C with maps given by the projections. In this paper, we study the homotopy type of the moduli space D(K,C) of fake wedges on K and C. We formulate two conjectures concerning this moduli space and verify that these conjectures hold after looping once. We show how embeddings of manifolds in Euclidean space provide a wealth of examples of non-trivial fake wedges. In an appendix, we recall discussions that the first author had with Greg Arone and Bob Thomason in early 1995 and explain how these are related to our conjectures.

Quantization and Fractional Quantization of Currents in Periodically Driven Stochastic Systems I: Average Currents

This article studies Markovian stochastic motion of a particle on a graph with finite number of nodes and periodically time-dependent transition rates that satisfy the detailed balance condition at any time. We show that under general conditions, the currents in the system on average become quantized or fractionally quantized for adiabatic driving at sufficiently low temperature. We develop the quantitative theory of this quantization and interpret it in terms of topological invariants. By implementing the celebrated Kirchhoff theorem we derive a general and explicit formula for the average generated current that plays a role of an efficient tool for treating the current quantization effects.

Quantization and Fractional Quantization of Currents in Periodically Driven Stochastic Systems II: Full Counting Statistics

We study Markovian stochastic motion on a graph with finite number of nodes and adiabatically periodically driven transition rates. We show that, under general conditions, the quantized currents that appear at low temperatures are a manifestation of topological invariants in the counting statistics of currents. This observation provides an approach for classification of topological properties of the counting statistics, as well as for extensions of the phenomenon of the robust quantization of currents at low temperatures to the properties of the counting statistics which persist to finite temperatures.

Poincare duality and Periodicity

We construct periodic families of Poincare complexes, partially solving a question of Hodgson that was posed in the proceedings of the 1982 Northwestern homotopy theory conference. We also construct infinite families of Poincare complexes whose top cell falls off after one suspension but which fail to embed in a sphere of codimension one. We give a homotopy theoretic description of the four-fold periodicity in knot cobordism.

The refined transfer, bundle structures and algebraic K-theory

We give new homotopy theoretic criteria for deciding when a fibration with homotopy finite fibers admits a reduction to a fiber bundle with compact topological manifold fibers. The criteria lead to a new and unexpected result about homeomorphism groups of manifolds. A tool used in the proof is a surjective splitting of the assembly map for Waldhausen's functor A(X). We also give concrete examples of fibrations having a reduction to a fiber bundle with compact topological manifold fibers but which fail to admit a compact fiber smoothing. The examples are detected by algebraic K-theory invariants. We consider a refinement of the Becker-Gottlieb transfer. We show that a version of the axioms described by Becker and Schultz uniquely determines the refined transfer for the class of fibrations admitting a reduction to a fiber bundle with compact topological manifold fibers. In an appendix, we sketch a theory of characteristic classes for fibrations. The classes are primary obstructions to finding a compact fiber smoothing.

Operations on A-theoretic nil-terms

For a space X, we define Frobenius and Verschiebung operations on the nil-terms NA^{fd} (X) in the algebraic K-theory of spaces, in three different ways. Two applications are included. Firstly, we obtain that the homotopy groups of NA^{fd} (X) are either trivial or not finitely generated as abelian groups. Secondly, the Verschiebung defines a Z[N_x]-module structure on the homotopy groups of NA^{fd} (X), with N_x the multiplicative monoid. We also we give a calculation of the homotopy groups of the nil-terms NA^{fd} (*) after p-completion for an odd prime p as Z_p[N_x]-modules up to dimension 4p-7. We obtain non-trivial groups only in dimension 2p-2, where it is finitely generated as a Z_p[N_x]-module, and in dimension 2p-1, where it is not finitely generated as a Z_p[N_x]-module.

On the homotopy invariance of configuration spaces

For a closed PL manifold M, we consider the configuration space F(M,k) of ordered k-tuples of distinct points in M. We show that a suitable iterated suspension of F(M,k) is a homotopy invariant of M. The number of suspensions we require depends on three parameters: the number of points k, the dimension of M and the connectivity of M. Our proof uses a mixture of Poincare embedding theory and fiberwise algebraic topology.

A chain rule in the calculus of homotopy functors

We formulate and prove a chain rule for the derivative, in the sense of Goodwillie, of compositions of weak homotopy functors from simplicial sets to simplicial sets. The derivative spectrum dF(X) of such a functor F at a simplicial set X can be equipped with a right action by the loop group of its domain X, and a free left action by the loop group of its codomain Y = F(X). The derivative spectrum d(E o F)(X)$ of a composite of such functors is then stably equivalent to the balanced smash product of the derivatives dE(Y) and dF(X), with respect to the two actions of the loop group of Y. As an application we provide a non-manifold computation of the derivative of the functor F(X) = Q(Map(K, X)_+).
