A-model Implications of Extended Mirror Symmetry

Associativity of the quantum product ensures flatness of the Dubrovin connection and is the basis for Hodge-theoretic mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau threefolds. We use ring and module structure on cohomology pertaining to a Lagrangian submanifold to define an extension of the A-model Variation of mixed Hodge structure that matches the predictions from extended mirror symmetry. Our construction makes contact with axioms for open Gromov-Witten theory recently proposed by Solomon-Tukachinsky.

Bounding the Heat Trace of a Calabi-Yau Manifold

The SCHOK bound states that the number of marginal deformations of certain two-dimensional conformal field theories is bounded linearly from above by the number of relevant operators. In conformal field theories defined via sigma models into Calabi-Yau manifolds, relevant operators can be estimated, in the point-particle approximation, by the low-lying spectrum of the scalar Laplacian on the manifold. In the strict large volume limit, the standard asymptotic expansion of Weyl and Minakshisundaram-Pleijel diverges with the higher-order curvature invariants. We propose that it would be sufficient to find an a priori uniform bound on the trace of the heat kernel for large but finite volume. As a first step in this direction, we then study the heat trace asymptotics, as well as the actual spectrum of the scalar Laplacian, in the vicinity of a conifold singularity. The eigenfunctions can be written in terms of confluent Heun functions, the analysis of which gives evidence that regions of large curvature will not prevent the existence of a bound of this type. This is also in line with general mathematical expectations about spectral continuity for manifolds with conical singularities. A sharper version of our results could, in combination with the SCHOK bound, provide a basis for a global restriction on the dimension of the moduli space of Calabi-Yau manifolds.

B-Model Approaches to Instanton Counting

This is the 13th article in the collection of reviews "Exact results in N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories", ed. J. Teschner. It discusses the relation between the instanton partition functions and the partition function of the topological string from the perspective of the B-model. The instanton partition functions provide solutions to the holomorphic anomaly equations characterising the partition functions of the topological string.

Framing the Di-Logarithm (over Z)

Motivated by their role for integrality and integrability in topological string theory, we introduce the general mathematical notion of "s-functions" as integral linear combinations of poly-logarithms. 2-functions arise as disk amplitudes in Calabi-Yau D-brane backgrounds and form the simplest and most important special class. We describe s-functions in terms of the action of the Frobenius endomorphism on formal power series and use this description to characterize 2-functions in terms of algebraic K-theory of the completed power series ring. This characterization leads to a general proof of integrality of the framing transformation, via a certain orthogonality relation in K-theory. We comment on a variety of possible applications. We here consider only power series with rational coefficients; the general situation when the coefficients belong to an arbitrary algebraic number field is treated in a companion paper.

Monodromy of Inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs Equations

We study low-degree curves on one-parameter Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces, and their contribution to the space-time superpotential in a superstring compactification with D-branes. We identify all lines that are invariant under at least one permutation of the homogeneous variables, and calculate the inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equation. The irrational large volume expansions satisfy the recently discovered algebraic integrality. The bulk of our work is a careful study of the topological integrality of monodromy under navigation around the complex structure moduli space. This is a powerful method to recover the single undetermined integration constant that is itself also of arithmetic significance. The examples feature a variety of residue fields, both abelian and non-abelian extensions of the rationals, thereby providing a glimpse of the arithmetic D-brane landscape.

ABCD of Beta Ensembles and Topological Strings

We study beta-ensembles with Bn, Cn, and Dn eigenvalue measure and their relation with refined topological strings. Our results generalize the familiar connections between local topological strings and matrix models leading to An measure, and illustrate that all those classical eigenvalue ensembles, and their topological string counterparts, are related one to another via various deformations and specializations, quantum shifts and discrete quotients. We review the solution of the Gaussian models via Macdonald identities, and interpret them as conifold theories. The interpolation between the various models is plainly apparent in this case. For general polynomial potential, we calculate the partition function in the multi-cut phase in a perturbative fashion, beyond tree-level in the large-N limit. The relation to refined topological string orientifolds on the corresponding local geometry is discussed along the way.

Monodromy of an Inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs Equation

The global behaviour of the normal function associated with van Geemen's family of lines on the mirror quintic is studied. Based on the associated inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equation, the series expansions around large complex structure, conifold, and around the open string discriminant are obtained. The monodromies are explicitly calculated from this data and checked to be integral. The limiting value of the normal function at large complex structure is an irrational number expressible in terms of the di-logarithm.

On the Arithmetic of D-brane Superpotentials. Lines and Conics on the Mirror Quintic

Irrational invariants from D-brane superpotentials are pursued on the mirror quintic, systematically according to the degree of a representative curve. Lines are completely understood: the contribution from isolated lines vanishes. All other lines can be deformed holomorphically to the van Geemen lines, whose superpotential is determined via the associated inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equation. Substantial progress is made for conics: the families found by Mustata contain conics reducible to isolated lines, hence they have a vanishing superpotential. The search for all conics invariant under a residual Z2 symmetry reduces to an algebraic problem at the limit of our computational capabilities. The main results are of arithmetic flavor: the extension of the moduli space by the algebraic cycle splits in the large complex structure limit into groups each governed by an algebraic number field. The expansion coefficients of the superpotential around large volume remain irrational. The integrality of those coefficients is revealed by a new, arithmetic twist of the di-logarithm: the D-logarithm. There are several options for attempting to explain how these invariants could arise from the A-model perspective. A successful spacetime interpretation will require spaces of BPS states to carry number theoretic structures, such as an action of the Galois group.

Open/Closed Topological CP1 Sigma Model Revisited

We consider the topological sigma-model on Riemann surfaces with genus g and h holes, and target space CP1. We calculate the correlation functions of bulk and boundary operators, and study the symmetries of the model and its most general deformation. We study the open/closed topological field theory (TFT) correspondence by summing up the boundaries. We argue that this summation can be understood as a renormalization of the closed TFT. We couple the model to topological gravity and derive constitutive relations between the correlation functions of bulk and boundary operators.

Extended Holomorphic Anomaly in Gauge Theory

The partition function of an N=2 gauge theory in the Omega-background satisfies, for generic value of the parameter beta=-eps_1/eps_2, the, in general extended, but otherwise beta-independent, holomorphic anomaly equation of special geometry. Modularity together with the (beta-dependent) gap structure at the various singular loci in the moduli space completely fixes the holomorphic ambiguity, also when the extension is non-trivial. In some cases, the theory at the orbifold radius, corresponding to beta=2, can be identified with an "orientifold" of the theory at beta=1. The various connections give hints for embedding the structure into the topological string.

On N=1 4d Effective Couplings for F-theory and Heterotic Vacua

We show that certain superpotential and Kahler potential couplings of N=1 supersymmetric compactifications with branes or bundles can be computed from Hodge theory and mirror symmetry. This applies to F-theory on a Calabi-Yau four-fold and three-fold compactifications of type II and heterotic strings with branes. The heterotic case includes a class of bundles on elliptic manifolds constructed by Friedmann, Morgan and Witten. Mirror symmetry of the four-fold computes non-perturbative corrections to mirror symmetry on the three-folds, including D-instanton corrections. We also propose a physical interpretation for the observation by Warner that relates the deformation spaces of certain matrix factorizations and the periods of non-compact 4-folds that are ALE fibrations.

Shift versus Extension in Refined Partition Functions

We have recently shown that the global behavior of the partition function of N=2 gauge theory in the general Omega-background is captured by special geometry in the guise of the (extended) holomorphic anomaly equation. We here analyze the fate of our results under the shift of the mass parameters of the gauge theory. The preferred value of the shift, noted previously in other contexts, restores the Z_2 symmetry of the instanton partition function under inversion of the Omega-background, and removes the extension. We comment on various connections.

Extended Holomorphic Anomaly and Loop Amplitudes in Open Topological String

Open topological string amplitudes on compact Calabi-Yau threefolds are shown to satisfy an extension of the holomorphic anomaly equation of Bershadsky, Cecotti, Ooguri and Vafa. The total topological charge of the D-brane configuration must vanish in order to satisfy tadpole cancellation. The boundary state of such D-branes is holomorphically captured by a Hodge theoretic normal function. Its Griffiths' infinitesimal invariant is the analogue of the closed string Yukawa coupling and plays the role of the terminator in a Feynman diagram expansion for the topological string with D-branes. The holomorphic anomaly equation is solved and the holomorphic ambiguity is fixed for some representative worldsheets of low genus and with few boundaries on the real quintic.

The Real Topological Vertex at Work

We develop the real vertex formalism for the computation of the topological string partition function with D-branes and O-planes at the fixed point locus of an anti-holomorphic involution acting non-trivially on the toric diagram of any local toric Calabi-Yau manifold. Our results cover in particular the real vertex with non-trivial fixed leg. We give a careful derivation of the relevant ingredients using duality with Chern-Simons theory on orbifolds. We show that the real vertex can also be interpreted in terms of a statistical model of symmetric crystal melting. Using this latter connection, we also assess the constant map contribution in Calabi-Yau orientifold models. We find that there are no perturbative contributions beyond one-loop, but a non-trivial sum over non-perturbative sectors, which we compare with the non-perturbative contribution to the closed string expansion.

Real Mirror Symmetry for One-parameter Hypersurfaces

We study open string mirror symmetry for one-parameter Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in weighted projective space. We identify mirror pairs of D-brane configurations, derive the corresponding inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equations, and solve for the domainwall tensions as analytic functions over moduli space. Our calculations exemplify several features that had not been seen in previous work on the quintic or local Calabi-Yau manifolds. We comment on the calculation of loop amplitudes.

D-brane Categories for Orientifolds -- The Landau-Ginzburg Case

We construct and classify categories of D-branes in orientifolds based on Landau-Ginzburg models and their orbifolds. Consistency of the worldsheet parity action on the matrix factorizations plays the key role. This provides all the requisite data for an orientifold construction after embedding in string theory. One of our main results is a computation of topological field theory correlators on unoriented worldsheets, generalizing the formulas of Vafa and Kapustin-Li for oriented worldsheets, as well as the extension of these results to orbifolds. We also find a doubling of Knoerrer periodicity in the orientifold context.

Dark Matter and The Anthropic Principle

We evaluate the problem of galaxy formation in the landscape approach to phenomenology of the axion sector. With other parameters of standard LambdaCDM cosmology held fixed, the density of cold dark matter is bounded below relative to the density of baryonic matter by the requirement that structure should form before the era of cosmological constant domination of the universe. Galaxies comparable to the Milky Way can only form if the ratio also satisfies an upper bound. The resulting constraint on the density of dark matter is too loose to select a low axion decay constant or small initial displacement angle on anthropic grounds.

Non-perturbative orientifold transitions at the conifold

After orientifold projection, the conifold singularity in hypermultiplet moduli space of Calabi-Yau compactifications cannot be avoided by geometric deformations. We study the non-perturbative fate of this singularity in a local model involving O6-planes and D6-branes wrapping the deformed conifold in Type IIA string theory. We classify possible A-type orientifolds of the deformed conifold and find that they cannot all be continued to the small resolution. When passing through the singularity on the deformed side, the O-plane charge generally jumps by the class of the vanishing cycle. To decide which classical configurations are dynamically connected, we construct the quantum moduli space by lifting the orientifold to M-theory as well as by looking at the superpotential. We find a rich pattern of smooth and phase transitions depending on the total sixbrane charge. Non-BPS states from branes wrapped on non-supersymmetric bolts are responsible for a phase transition. We also clarify the nature of a Z_2 valued D0-brane charge in the 6-brane background. Along the way, we obtain a new metric of G_2 holonomy corresponding to an O6-plane on the three sphere of the deformed conifold.

Chaotic Duality in String Theory

We investigate the general features of renormalization group flows near superconformal fixed points of four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with gravity duals. The gauge theories we study arise as the world-volume theory on a set of D-branes at a Calabi-Yau singularity where a del Pezzo surface shrinks to zero size. Based mainly on field theory analysis, we find evidence that such flows are often chaotic and contain exotic features such as duality walls. For a gauge theory where the del Pezzo is the Hirzebruch zero surface, the dependence of the duality wall height on the couplings at some point in the cascade has a self-similar fractal structure. For a gauge theory dual to CP^2 blown up at a point, we find periodic and quasi-periodic behavior for the gauge theory couplings that does not violate the a-conjecture. Finally, we construct supergravity duals for these del Pezzos that match our field theory beta functions.

F-term equations near Gepner points

We study marginal deformations of B-type D-branes in Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds. The general setup of matrix factorizations allows for exact computations of F-term equations in the low-energy effective theory which are much simpler than in a corresponding geometric description. We present a number of obstructed and unobstructed examples in detail, including one in which a closed string modulus is obstructed by the presence of D-branes. In a certain example, we find a non-trivial global structure of the BRST operator on the moduli space of branes.

Orientifolds of Gepner Models

We systematically construct and study Type II Orientifolds based on Gepner models which have N=1 supersymmetry in 3+1 dimensions. We classify the parity symmetries and construct the crosscap states. We write down the conditions that a configuration of rational branes must satisfy for consistency (tadpole cancellation and rank constraints) and spacetime supersymmetry. For certain cases, including Type IIB orientifolds of the quintic and a two parameter model, one can find all solutions in this class. Depending on the parity, the number of vacua can be large, of the order of 10^{10}-10^{13}. For other models, it is hard to find all solutions but special solutions can be found -- some of them are chiral. We also make comparison with the large volume regime and obtain a perfect match. Through this study, we find a number of new features of Type II orientifolds, including the structure of moduli space and the change in the type of O-planes under navigation through non-geometric phases.

On the S-matrix of Type 0 String Theory

The recent discovery of non-perturbatively stable two-dimensional string backgrounds and their dual matrix models allows the study of complete scattering matrices in string theory. In this note we adapt work of Moore, Plesser, and Ramgoolam on the bosonic string to compute the exact S-matrices of 0A and 0B string theory in two dimensions. Unitarity of the 0B theory requires the inclusion of massless soliton sectors carrying RR scalar charge as asymptotic states. We propose a regularization of IR divergences and find transition probabilities that distinguish the otherwise energetically degenerate soliton sectors. Unstable D-branes can decay into distinct soliton sectors.

The Decay of Unstable Noncommutative Solitons

We study the classical decay of unstable scalar solitons in noncommutative field theory in 2+1 dimensions. This can, but does not have to, be viewed as a toy model for the decay of D-branes in string theory. In the limit that the noncommutativity parameter θis infinite, the gradient term is absent, there are no propagating modes and the soliton does not decay at all. If θis large, but finite, the rotationally symmetric decay channel can be described as a highly excited nonlinear oscillator weakly coupled to a continuum of linear modes. This system is closely akin to those studied in the context of discrete breathers. We here diagonalize the linear problem and compute the decay rate to first order using a version of Fermi's Golden Rule, leaving a more rigorous treatment for future work.
