Supersymmetric vortex loops in 3D gauge theories

We give a precise definition of BPS vortex loops in 3D non-abelian gauge theories with ${\cal N}=2$ SUSY by the path integral over fields with a prescribed singular behavior. We compute the expectation value of a BPS vortex loop on an ellipsoid. Using the result we revisit the known equivalence between Wilson and vortex loops in pure Chern-Simons theory. Naive computations of expectation values in ${\cal N}=2$ theory leads to an unwanted shift of parameters in the rule of correspondence. We resolve the problem by relating the shift to the global anomaly of ${\cal N}=2$ SUSY quantum mechanics. For theories with $U(N)$ gauge group we also develop an alternative description of vortex loops in terms of 1D ${\cal N}=2$ SUSY quantum mechanics on their worldline. For vortex loops in ${\cal N}=4$ theories, our construction reproduces some of the quiver GLSMs of Assel and Gomis.

Localization principle in SUSY gauge theories

Localization principle is a powerful analytic tool in supersymmetric gauge theories which enables one to perform supersymmetric path integrals explicitly. Many important formulae have been obtained, and they led to a major breakthrough in the understanding of gauge theories at strong coupling as well as the dynamics of branes in M-theory. Some of those results are reviewed, focusing especially on Pestun's solution to four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories on S^4 and the subsequent developments on three or four-dimensional gauge theories on spheres.

Self-dual Strings and 2D SYM

We study the system of M2-branes suspended between parallel M5-branes using ABJM model with a natural half-BPS boundary condition. For small separation between M5-branes, the worldvolume theory is shown to reduce to a 2D N=(4,4) super Yang-Mills theory with some similarity to q-deformed Yang-Mills theory. The gauge coupling is related to the position of the branes in an interesting manner. The theory is considerably different from the 2D theory proposed for multiple "M-strings". We make a detailed comparison of elliptic genus of the two descriptions and find only a partial agreement.

AGT relation in the light asymptotic limit

It is known that the path integral of correlators in Liouville theory reduces to a finite dimensional integral in the limit of vanishing coupling b. We take the example of four-point functions on sphere and investigate how the simple integral expression is reproduced from the path integral of gauge theory on extremely squashed ellipsoids. The simplified form for correlators suggests there is a 2D gauge theory describing the limit.

Seiberg-Witten Theories on Ellipsoids

We present a set of equations for a 4D Killing spinor which guarantees the Seiberg-Witten theories on a curved background to be supersymmetric. The equations involve an SU(2) gauge field and some auxiliary fields in addition to the metric. Four-dimensional ellipsoids with U(1)xU(1) isometry are shown to admit a supersymmetry if these additional fields are chosen appropriately. We compute the partition function of general Seiberg-Witten theories on ellipsoids, and the result suggests a correspondence with 2D Liouville or Toda correlators with general coupling constant b.

Supersymmetric Gauge Theories on the Five-Sphere

We construct Euclidean 5d supersymmetric gauge theories on the five-sphere with vector and hypermultiplets. The SUSY transformation and the action are explicitly determined from the standard Noether procedure as well as from off-shell supergravity. Using localization techniques, the path-integral is shown to be restricted to the integration over a generalization of instantons on CP^2 and the Coulomb moduli.

SUSY Gauge Theories on Squashed Three-Spheres

We study Euclidean 3D N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories on squashed three-spheres preserving isometries SU(2) x U(1) or U(1) x U(1). We show that, when a suitable background U(1) gauge field is turned on, these squashed spheres support charged Killing spinors and therefore N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories. We present the Lagrangian and supersymmetry rules for general gauge theories. The partition functions are computed using localization principle, and are expressed as integrals over Coulomb branch. For the squashed sphere with U(1) x U(1) isometry, its measure and integrand are identified with the building blocks of structure constants in Liouville or Toda conformal field theories with b \neq 1.

AGT on the S-duality Wall

Three-dimensional gauge theory T[G] arises on a domain wall between four-dimensional N=4 SYM theories with the gauge groups G and its S-dual G^L. We argue that the N=2^* mass deformation of the bulk theory induces a mass-deformation of the theory T[G] on the wall. The partition functions of the theory T[SU(2)] and its mass-deformation on the three-sphere are shown to coincide with the transformation coefficient of Liouville one-point conformal block on torus under the S-duality.

Boundary transitions of the O(n) model on a dynamical lattice

We study the anisotropic boundary conditions for the dilute O(n) loop model with the methods of 2D quantum gravity. We solve the problem exactly on a dynamical lattice using the correspondence with a large $N$ matrix model. We formulate the disk two-point functions with ordinary and anisotropic boundary conditions as loop correlators in the matrix model. We derive the loop equations for these correlators and find their explicit solution in the scaling limit. Our solution reproduces the boundary phase diagram and the boundary critical exponents obtained recently by Dubail, Jacobsen and Saleur, except for the cusp at the isotropic special transition point. Moreover, our solution describes the bulk and the boundary deformations away from the anisotropic special transitions. In particular it shows how the anisotropic special boundary conditions are deformed by the bulk thermal flow towards the dense phase.

A Nonperturbative Test of M2-Brane Theory

We discuss non-perturbative effects in the ABJM model due to monopole instantons. We begin by constructing the instanton solutions in the $U(2)\times U(2)$ model, explicitly, and computing the Euclidean action. The Wick-rotated Lagrangian is complex and its BPS monopole instantons are found to be a delicate version of the usual 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole solutions. They are generically 1/3 BPS but become 1/2 BPS at special locus in the moduli space of two M2-branes, yet each instanton carries eight fermionic zero modes, regardless of the vacuum choice. The low energy effective action induced by monopole instantons are quartic order in derivatives. The resulting vertices are nonperturbative in $1/k$, as expected, but are rational functions of the vacuum moduli. We also analyze the system of two M2-branes in the supergravity framework and compute the higher order interactions via 11-dimensional supergraviton exchange. The comparison of the two shows that the instanton vertices are precisely reproduced by this M2-brane picture, supporting the proposal that the ABJM model describes multiple M2-branes.

N=4 Superconformal Chern-Simons Theories with Hyper and Twisted Hyper Multiplets

We extend the N=4 superconformal Chern-Simons theories of Gaiotto and Witten to those with additional twisted hyper-multiplets. The new theories are generically linear quiver gauge theories with the two types of hyper-multiplets alternating between gauge groups. Our construction includes the Bagger-Lambert model of SO(4) gauge group. A family of abelian theories are identified with those proposed earlier in the context of the M-crystal model for M2-branes probing (C^2/Z_n)^2 orbifolds. Possible extension with non-abelian BF couplings and string/M-theory realization are briefly discussed.

Permutation Orientifolds of Gepner Models

In tensor products of a left-right symmetric CFT, one can define permutation orientifolds by combining orientation reversal with involutive permutation symmetries. We construct the corresponding crosscap states in general rational CFTs and their orbifolds, and study in detail those in products of affine U(1)_2 models or N=2 minimal models. The results are used to construct permutation orientifolds of Gepner models. We list the permutation orientifolds in a few simple Gepner models, and study some of their physical properties - supersymmetry, tension and RR charges. We also study the action of corresponding parity on D-branes, and determine the gauge group on a stack of parity-invariant D-branes. Tadpole cancellation condition and some of its solutions are also presented.

Solution of the H3+ model on a disc

We determine all the correlators of the H3+ model on a disc with AdS2-brane boundary conditions in terms of correlators of Liouville theory on a disc with FZZT-brane boundary conditions. We argue that the Cardy-Lewellen constraints are weaker in the H3+ model than in rational conformal field theories due to extra singularities of the correlators, but strong enough to uniquely determine the bulk two-point function on a disc. We confirm our results by detailed analyses of the bulk-boundary two-point function and of the boundary two-point function. In particular we find that, although the target space symmetry preserved by AdS2-branes is the group SL(2,R), the open string states between two distinct parallel AdS2-branes belong to representations of the universal covering group.

G_2 Holonomy, Mirror Symmetry and Phases of N=1 SYM

We study the phase structure of four-dimensional N=1 super Yang-Mills theories realized on D6-branes wrapping the RP^3 of a Z_2 orbifold of the deformed conifold. The non-trivial fundamental group of RP^3 allows for the gauge group to be broken to various product groups by Z_2 Wilson lines. We study the classical moduli space of theories in various pictures related by dualities including an M-theory lift. The quantum moduli space is analyzed in a dual IIB theory, where a complex curve contained in the target space plays a key role. We find that the quantum moduli space is made up of several branches, characterized by the presence or absence of a low energy U(1) gauge symmetry, which are connected at points of monopole condensation. The resulting picture of the quantum moduli space shows how the various gauge theories with different product gauge groups are connected to one another.

Non-perturbative orientifold transitions at the conifold

After orientifold projection, the conifold singularity in hypermultiplet moduli space of Calabi-Yau compactifications cannot be avoided by geometric deformations. We study the non-perturbative fate of this singularity in a local model involving O6-planes and D6-branes wrapping the deformed conifold in Type IIA string theory. We classify possible A-type orientifolds of the deformed conifold and find that they cannot all be continued to the small resolution. When passing through the singularity on the deformed side, the O-plane charge generally jumps by the class of the vanishing cycle. To decide which classical configurations are dynamically connected, we construct the quantum moduli space by lifting the orientifold to M-theory as well as by looking at the superpotential. We find a rich pattern of smooth and phase transitions depending on the total sixbrane charge. Non-BPS states from branes wrapped on non-supersymmetric bolts are responsible for a phase transition. We also clarify the nature of a Z_2 valued D0-brane charge in the 6-brane background. Along the way, we obtain a new metric of G_2 holonomy corresponding to an O6-plane on the three sphere of the deformed conifold.

Orientifolds of Gepner Models

We systematically construct and study Type II Orientifolds based on Gepner models which have N=1 supersymmetry in 3+1 dimensions. We classify the parity symmetries and construct the crosscap states. We write down the conditions that a configuration of rational branes must satisfy for consistency (tadpole cancellation and rank constraints) and spacetime supersymmetry. For certain cases, including Type IIB orientifolds of the quintic and a two parameter model, one can find all solutions in this class. Depending on the parity, the number of vacua can be large, of the order of 10^{10}-10^{13}. For other models, it is hard to find all solutions but special solutions can be found -- some of them are chiral. We also make comparison with the large volume regime and obtain a perfect match. Through this study, we find a number of new features of Type II orientifolds, including the structure of moduli space and the change in the type of O-planes under navigation through non-geometric phases.

Operator product expansion in SL(2) conformal field theory

In the conformal field theories having affine SL(2) symmetry, we study the operator product expansion (OPE) involving primary fields in highest weight representations. For this purpose, we analyze properties of primary fields with definite SL(2) weights, and calculate their two- and three-point functions. Using these correlators, we show that the correct OPE is obtained when one of the primary fields belongs to the degenerate highest weight representation. We briefly comment on the OPE in the SL(2,R) WZNW model.

Three-point Functions in Sine-Liouville Theory

We calculate the three-point functions in the sine-Liouville theory explicitly. The same calculation was done in the (unpublished) work of Fateev, Zamolodchikov and Zamolodchikov to check the conjectured duality between the sine-Liouville and the SL(2,R)/U(1) coset CFTs. The evaluation of correlators boils down to that of a free-field theory with a certain number of insertion of screening operators. We prove that the winding number conservation is violated up to (+-)1 in three-point functions, which is in agreement with the result of FZZ that in generic N-point correlators the winding number conservation is violated up to N-2 units. A new integral formula of Dotsenko-Fateev type is derived, using which we write down the generic three-point functions of tachyons explicitly. When the winding number is conserved, the resultant expression is shown to reproduce the correlators in the coset model correctly, including the group-theoretical factor. As an application, we also study the superstring theory on linear dilaton background which is described by super-Liouville theory. We obtain the three-point amplitude of tachyons in which the winding number conservation is violated.
