We formulate quantum theory taking as a starting point the cone of states.
The quantum theory can be formulated in the language of positive functionals on Weyl or Clifford algebra ($L$-functionals). It is shown that this language gives simple understanding of diagrams of Keldysh formalism (that coincide in our case with the diagrams of thermo-field dynamics). The matrix elements of the scattering matrix in the formalism of $L$-functionals are related to inclusive cross-sections, therefore we suggest the name "inclusive scattering matrix" for this notion. The inclusive scattering matrix can be expressed in terms of on-shell values of generalized Green functions. This notion is necessary if we want to analyze collisions of quasiparticles.
We formulate axioms of conformal theory (CT) in dimensions $>2$ modifying Segal's axioms for two-dimensional CFT. (In the definition of higher-dimensional CFT one includes also a condition of existence of energy-momentum tensor.) We use these axioms to derive the AdS/CT correspondence for local theories on AdS . We introduce a notion of weakly local quantum field theory and construct a bijective correspondence between conformal theories on the sphere $S^d$ and weakly local quantum field theories on $H^{d+1}$ that are invariant with respect to isometries. (Here $H^{d+1}$ denotes hyperbolic space= Euclidean AdS space.) We give an expression of AdS correlation functions in terms of CT correlation functions. The conformal theory has conserved energy-momentum tensor iff the AdS theory has graviton in its spectrum.
There are two different ways to deform a quantum curve along the flows of the KP hierarchy. We clarify the relation between the two KP orbits: In the framework of suitable connections attached to the quantum curve they are related by a local Fourier duality. As an application we give a conceptual proof of duality results in 2D quantum gravity.
We analyze Weierstrass cycles and tautological rings in moduli space of smooth algebraic curves and in moduli spaces of integral algebraic curves with embedded disks with special attention to moduli spaces of curves having genus $\leq 6$. In particular, we show that our general formula gives a good estimate for the dimension of Weierstrass cycles for lower genera.
We are solving for the case of flat superspace some homological problems that were formulated by Berkovits and Howe. (Our considerations can be applied also to the case of supertorus.) These problems arise in the attempt to construct integrals invariant with respect to supersymmetry. They appear also in other situations, in particular, in the pure spinor formalism in supergravity.
We discuss the relation between quantum curves (defined as solutions of equation $[P,Q]=\hbar$, where $P,Q$ are ordinary differential operators) and classical curves. We illustrate this relation for the case of quantum curve that corresponds to the $(p,q)$-minimal model coupled to 2D gravity.
One says that a pair (P,Q) of ordinary differential operators specify a quantum curve if [P,Q]=const. If a pair of difference operators (K,L) obey the relation KL=const LK we say that they specify a discrete quantum curve. This terminology is prompted by well known results about commuting differential and difference operators, relating pairs of such operators with pairs of meromorphic functions on algebraic curves obeying some conditions. The goal of this paper is to study the moduli spaces of quantum curves. We will show how to quantize a pair of commuting differential or difference operators (i.e. to construct the corresponding quantum curve or discrete quantum curve). The KP-hierarchy acts on the moduli space of quantum curves; we prove that similarly the discrete KP-hierarchy acts on the moduli space of discrete quantum curves.
We analyze cohomological properties of the Krichever map and use the results to study Weierstrass cycles in moduli spaces and the tautological ring.
In the study of the Type II superstring, it is useful to consider the BRST complex associated to the sum of two pure spinors. The cohomology of this complex is an infinite-dimensional vector space. It is also a finite-dimensional algebra over the algebra of functions of a single pure spinor. In this paper we study the multiplicative structure.
Motivated by their role for integrality and integrability in topological string theory, we introduce the general mathematical notion of "s-functions" as integral linear combinations of poly-logarithms. 2-functions arise as disk amplitudes in Calabi-Yau D-brane backgrounds and form the simplest and most important special class. We describe s-functions in terms of the action of the Frobenius endomorphism on formal power series and use this description to characterize 2-functions in terms of algebraic K-theory of the completed power series ring. This characterization leads to a general proof of integrality of the framing transformation, via a certain orthogonality relation in K-theory. We comment on a variety of possible applications. We here consider only power series with rational coefficients; the general situation when the coefficients belong to an arbitrary algebraic number field is treated in a companion paper.
We study the relation between the partition function of refined SU(N) and SO(2N) Chern-Simons on the 3-sphere and the universal Chern-Simons partition function in the sense of Mkrtchyan and Veselov. We find a four-parameter generalization of the integral representation of universal Chern-Simons that includes refined SU(N) and SO(2N) Chern-Simons for special values of parameters. The large N expansion of the integral representation of refined SU(N) Chern-Simons explicitly shows the replacement of the virtual Euler characteristic of the moduli space of complex curves with a refined Euler characteristic related to the radius deformed c=1 string free energy.
We study the multiplication and comultiplication in equivariant cohomology of Sato Grassmannian
We calculate the homomorphism of the cohomology induced by the Krichever map of moduli spaces of curves into infinite-dimensional Grassmannian. This calculation can be used to compute the homology classes of cycles on moduli spaces of curves that are defined in terms of Weierstrass points.
We study the homology and cohomology groups of super Lie algebra of supersymmetries and of super Poincare algebra. We discuss in detail the calculation in dimensions D=10 and D=6. Our methods can be applied to extended supersymmetry algebra and to other dimensions.
We show that the notions of space and time in algebraic quantum field theory arise from translation symmetry if we assume asymptotic commutativity. We argue that this construction can be applied to string theory.
We study wave functions of B-model on a Calabi-Yau threefold in various polarizations.
We consider gauge theories on noncommutative euclidean space . In particular, we discuss the structure of gauge group following standard mathematical definitions and using the ideas of hep-th/0102182.
We study gauge theories on noncommutative tori. It was proved in [5] that Morita equivalence of noncommutative tori leads to a physical equivalence (SO(d,d| Z)-duality) of the corresponding gauge theories. We calculate the energy spectrum of maximally supersymmetric BPS states in these theories and show that this spectrum agrees with the SO(d,d| Z)-duality. The relation of our results with those of recent calculations is discussed.
It was shown by Connes, Douglas, Schwarz[1] that one can compactify M(atrix) theory on noncommutative torus. We prove that compactifications on Morita equivalent tori are physically equivalent. This statement can be considered as a generalization of non-classical duality conjectured in [1] for two-dimensional tori.
We study toroidal compactification of Matrix theory, using ideas and results of non-commutative geometry. We generalize this to compactification on the noncommutative torus, explain the classification of these backgrounds, and argue that they correspond in supergravity to tori with constant background three-form tensor field. The paper includes an introduction for mathematicians to the IKKT formulation of Matrix theory and its relation to the BFSS Matrix theory.
Infinite-dimensional Grassmannian manifold contains moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces of all genera. This well known fact leads to a conjecture that non-perturbative string theory can be formulated in terms of Grassmannian. We present new facts supporting this hypothesis. In particular, it is shown that Grassmannians can be considered as generalized moduli spaces; this statement permits us to define corresponding "string amplitudes" (at least formally). One can conjecture, that it is possible to explain the relation between non-perturbative and perturbative string theory by means of localization theorems for equivariant cohomology; this conjecture is based on the characterization of moduli spaces, relevant to string theory, as sets consisting of points with large stabilizers in certain groups acting on Grassmannian. We describe an involution on the Grassmannian that could be related to S-duality in string theory.
We study conditions under which an odd symmetry of the integrand leads to localization of the corresponding integral over a (super)manifold. We also show that in many cases these conditions guarantee exactness of the stationary phase approximation of such integrals.
We consider generalizations of the Vieta formula (relating the coefficients of an algebraic equation to the roots) to the case of equations whose coefficients are order-$k$ matrices. Specifically, we prove that if $X_1,\dots ,X_n$ are solutions of an algebraic matrix equation $X^n+A_1X^{n-1}+\dots +A_n=0,$ independent in the sense that they determine the coefficients $A_1,\dots ,A_n$, then the trace of $A_1$ is the sum of the traces of the $X_i$, and the determinant of $A_n$ is, up to a sign, the product of the determinants of the $X_i$. We generalize this to arbitrary rings with appropriate structures. This result is related to and motivated by some constructions in non-commutative geometry.
This article is a collection of letters solicited by the editors of the Bulletin in response to a previous article by Jaffe and Quinn [math.HO/9307227]. The authors discuss the role of rigor in mathematics and the relation between mathematics and theoretical physics.
The geometry of supermanifolds provided with $Q$-structure (i.e. with odd vector field $Q$ satisfying $\{ Q,Q\} =0$), $P$-structure (odd symplectic structure ) and $S$-structure (volume element) or with various combinations of these structures is studied. The results are applied to the analysis of Batalin-Vilkovisky approach to the quantization of gauge theories. In particular the semiclassical approximation in this approach is expressed in terms of Reidemeister torsion.
