Diophantine approximation on curves

Let $g$ be a dimension function. The Generalised Baker-Schmidt Problem (1970) concerns the $g$-dimensional Hausdorff measure ($\HH^g$-measure) of the set of $Ψ$-approximable points on nondegenerate manifolds. The problem relates the `size' of the set of $Ψ$-approximable points with the convergence or divergence of a certain series. In the dual approximation setting, the divergence case has been established by Beresnevich-Dickinson-Velani (2006) for any nondegenerate manifold. The convergence case, however, represents a major challenging open problem and progress thus far has been effectuated in limited cases only. In this paper, we discuss and prove several results on the $\HH^g$-measure on Veronese curves in any dimension $n$. As a consequence of one of our results, we generalize recent results of Pezzoni [Acta Arith. 193 (2020), no. 3, 269-281] regarding $n=3$. This improvement evolves from a deeper investigation on general irreducibility considerations applicable in arbitrary dimensions. We further investigate the $\HH^g$-measure for convergence on planar curves. We show that the monotonicity assumption on a multivariable approximating function cannot be removed for planar curves.

Metric results on inhomogeneously singular vectors

Given $\ut\in\Rm$ and any norm $\Vert.\Vert$ on $\Rm$, we consider "inhomogeneously singular" vectors in $\Rm$ that admit an integer vector solution $(q,\underline{p})=(q,p_1,\ldots,p_m)$ to the system \[ 1\leq q\leq Q, \qquad \Vert q\ux-\underline{p}-\underlineθ\Vert\leq cQ^{-1/m} \] for any $c>0$ and all large $Q$. We show that this set has large packing dimension, and in view of recent deep results by Das, Fishman, Simmons, Urbański, our lower bounds are almost sharp (up to $O(m^{-1})$). We establish slightly weaker bounds for the Hausdorff dimension as well. Our bounds are applicable to the $b$-ary setting, i.e. when restricting to $q$ above integral powers of some given base $b\geq 2$. We further derive similar results for vectors on certain $m$-dimensional fractals, thereby contributing to a question of Bugeaud, Cheung and Chevallier and complementing recent work by Kleinbock, Moshchevitin and Weiss and by Khalil. Moreover, we show that in contrast to Liouville vectors, the set of singular vectors in $\Rm$ does not form a comeagre set. We infer this from a general new result that any comeagre set in $\Rm$ has full packing dimension. As another independent consequence of our method, we show that there are subsets $A,B$ of $\mathbb{R}^m$ for which $A+B=B+B=\mathbb{R}^m$ but $A+B$ has Hausdorff dimension less than $m$, and generalizations. The proofs rely on observations on sumsets and a result by Tricot involving Cartesian products and are surprisingly elementary. The topological results further use an observation of Erdős.

Applications of Siegel's Lemma to a system of linear forms and its minimal points

Consider a real matrix $Θ$ consisting of rows $(θ_{i,1},\ldots,θ_{i,n})$, for $1\leq i\leq m$. The problem of making the system linear forms $x_{1}θ_{i,1}+\cdots+x_{n}θ_{i,n}-y_{i}$ for integers $x_{j},y_{i}$ small naturally induces an ordinary and a uniform exponent of approximation, denoted by $w(Θ)$ and $\widehat{w}(Θ)$ respectively. For $m=1$, a sharp lower bound for the ratio $w(Θ)/\widehat{w}(Θ)$ was recently established by Marnat and Moshchevitin. We give a short, new proof of this result upon a hypothesis on the best approximation integer vectors associated to $Θ$. Our conditional result extends to general $m>1$ (but may not be optimal in this case). Moreover, our hypothesis is always satisfied in particular for $m=1, n=2$ and thereby unconditionally confirms a previous observation of Jarník. We formulate our results in the more general context of approximation of subspaces of Euclidean spaces by lattices. We further establish criteria upon which a given number $\ell$ of consecutive best approximation vectors are linearly independent. Our method is based on Siegel's Lemma.

On a question of Schmidt and Summerer concerning $3$-systems

Following a suggestion of W.M. Schmidt and L. Summerer, we construct a proper $3$-system $(P_{1},P_{2},P_{3})$ with the property $\overlineφ_{3}=1$. In fact, our method generalizes to provide $n$-systems with $\overlineφ_{n}=1$, for arbitrary $n\geq 3$. We visualize our constructions with graphics. We further present explicit examples of numbers $ξ_{1}, \ldots, ξ_{n-1}$ that induce the $n$-systems in question.

An equivalence principle between polynomial and simultaneous Diophantine approximation

We show that Mahler's classification of real numbers $ζ$ with respect to the growth of the sequence $(w_{n}(ζ))_{n\geq 1}$ is equivalently induced by certain natural assumptions on the decay of the sequence $(λ_{n}(ζ))_{n\geq 1}$ concerning simultaneous rational approximation. Thereby we obtain a much clearer picture on simultaneous approximation to successive powers of a real number in general. Another variant of the Mahler classification concerning uniform approximation by algebraic numbers is shown as well. Our method has several applications to classic exponents of Diophantine approximation and metric theory. We deduce estimates on the Hausdorff dimension of well-approximable vectors on the Veronese curve and refine the best known upper bound for the exponent $\widehatλ_{n}(ζ)$ for even $n\geq 4$.

On a problem posed by Mahler

E. Maillet proved that the set of Liouville numbers is preserved under rational functions with rational coefficients. Based on this result, a problem posed by Kurt Mahler is to investigate whether there exist entire transcendental functions with this property or not. For large parametrized classes of Liouville numbers, we construct such functions and moreover we show that it can be constructed such that all their derivatives share this property. We use a completely different approach than in a recent paper, where functions with a different invariant subclass of Liouville numbers were constructed (though with no information on derivatives). More generally, we study the image of Liouville numbers under analytic functions, with particular attention to $f(z)=z^{q}$ where $q$ is a rational number.

On the spectrum of Diophantine approximation constants

The approximation constant $λ_{k}(ζ)$ is defined as the supremum of real $η$ such that $\Vert ζ^{j}x\Vert\leq x^{-η}$ for $1\leq j\leq k$ has infinitely many integer solutions $x$. Here $\Vert.\Vert$ denotes the distance to the closest integer. We establish a connection on the joint spectrum $(λ_{1}(ζ),λ_{2}(ζ),\ldots)$ which will lead to various improvements of known results on the individual spectrum of the approximation constants $λ_{k}(ζ)$ as well. In particular, this extends a result by Bugeaud to the case of arbitrary dimension $k$. Concretely, given $k\geq 1$ and $λ\geq 1$, we infer {\em explicit} constructions of $ζ$ in the Cantor set with $λ_{k}(ζ)=λ$.

On uniform approximation to real numbers

Let $n \ge 2$ be an integer and $ξ$ a transcendental real number. We establish several new relations between the values at $ξ$ of the exponents of Diophantine approximation $w_n, w_{n}^{\ast}, \hat{w}_{n}$, and $\hat{w}_{n}^{\ast}$. Combining our results with recent estimates by Schmidt and Summerer allows us to refine the inequality $\hat{w}_{n}(ξ) \le 2n-1$ proved by Davenport and Schmidt in 1969.

On a $\mathbb{Z}$-module connected to approximation theory

This paper deals with the set of $α\in{\mathbb{R}}$ such that $αζ^{n} \bmod 1$ tends to $0$ for a fixed $ζ\in{\mathbb{R}}$, which we call $\mathscr{M}_ζ$. Predominately the case of Pisot numbers $ζ$ is studied. In this case the inclusions $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{Q}(ζ)}\subset\mathscr{M}_ζ\subset\mathbb{Q}(ζ)$ are known. We will show the properties of $\mathscr{M}_ζ$ are connected to the module structure of the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{Q}(ζ)}$. We will describe the module structure of $\mathscr{M}_ζ$ and how much $\mathscr{M}_ζ$ differs from $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{Q}(ζ)}$. The results besides allow to give some information on the shape of integral bases of real number fields.

On the rate of accumulation of $αζ^{n}$ mod 1 to 0

In this paper we study the distribution of the sequence $(αζ^{n})_{n\geq 1}$ mod $1$, where $α,ζ$ are fixed positive real numbers, with special focus on the accumulation point $0$. For this purpose we introduce approximation constants $\underlineσ(α,ζ),\overlineσ(α, ζ)$ and study their properties in dependence of $α,ζ$, distinguishing in particular the cases of Pisot numbers, algebraic non Pisot numbers and transcendental values of $α$ as well as $ζ$.

Diophantine approximation and special Liouville numbers

This paper introduces some methods to determine the simultaneous approximation constants of a class of well approximable numbers $ζ_{1},ζ_{2},...,ζ_{k}$. The approach relies on results on the connection between the set of all $s$-adic expansions ($s\geq 2$) of $ζ_{1},ζ_{2},...,ζ_{k}$ and their associated approximation constants. As an application, explicit construction of real numbers $ζ_{1},ζ_{2},...,ζ_{k}$ with prescribed approximation properties are deduced and illustrated by Matlab plots.

Two estimates concerning classical Diophantine approximation constants

In this paper we aim to prove two inequalities involving the classical approximation constants $w_{n}^{\prime}(ζ),\hat{w}_{n}^{\prime}(ζ)$ that stem from the simultaneous approximation problem $|ζ^{j}x-y_{j}|$, $1\leq j\leq n$, on the one side and the constants $w_{n}^{\ast}(ζ),\hat{w}_{n}^{\ast}(ζ)$ connected to approximation with algebraic numbers of degree $\leq n$ on the other side. We concretely prove $w_{n}^{\ast}(ζ)\hat{w}_{n}^{\prime}(ζ)\geq 1$ and $\hat{w}_{n}^{\ast}(ζ)w_{n}^{\prime}(ζ)\geq 1$. The first result is due to W. Schmidt, however our method of proving it allows to derive the other inequality as a dual result. Finally we will discuss estimates of $w_{n}^{\ast}(ζ), \hat{w}_{n}^{\ast}(ζ)$ uniformly in $ζ$ depending only on $n$ as an application.
