Representation of excited states and topological order of the toric code in MERA

The holographic duality relates a field theory to a theory of (quantum) gravity in one dimension more. The extra dimension represents the scale of the RG transformation in the field theory. It has been conjectured that the tensor networks which arise during the real space renormalization procedure like the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) are a discretized version of the background of the gravity theory. We strive to contribute to make this conjecture testable by considering an explicit and tractable example, namely the dual network of the toric code, for which MERA can be performed analytically. We examine how this construction can be extended to include excited states. Furthermore, we show how to calculate topological entanglement entropy from the geometry of MERA. This method is expected to generalize to systems with generic entanglement structure.

Decoupling limits in multi-sector supergravities

Conventional approaches to cosmology in supergravity assume the existence of multiple sectors that only communicate gravitationally. In principle these sectors decouple in the limit Planck mass to infinity. In practice such a limit is delicate: for generic supergravities, where sectors are combined by adding their Kahler functions, the separate superpotentials must contain non-vanishing vacuum expectation values supplementing the naive global superpotential. We show that this requires non-canonical scaling in the naive supergravity superpotential couplings to recover independent sectors of globally supersymmetric field theory in the decoupling limit Planck Mass to infinity.

Entanglement propagation and typicality of measurements in the quantum Kac ring

We study the time evolution of entanglement in a quantum version of the Kac ring. Our model consists of two spin chains and quantum gates instead of the classical markers. The gates take one qubit from each ring at a time as an input and entangle them. Subsequently, one ring is rotated. This protocol creates non-trivial entanglement between the two rings, which we measure by the entanglement entropy. The features of the entanglement evolution can best be understood by using knowledge about the behavior of an ensemble of classical Kac rings. For instance, the recurrence time of this quantum many-body system is twice the length of the chain and "thermalization" only occurs on time scales much smaller than the dimension of the Hilbert space. The model thus elucidates the relation between distribution of measurement results in quantum and classical systems: While in classical systems repeated measurements are performed over an ensemble of systems, the corresponding result is obtained by measuring the same quantum system prepared in an appropriate superposition repeatedly.

The everpresent eta-problem: knowledge of all hidden sectors required

We argue that the eta-problem in supergravity inflation cannot be solved without knowledge of the ground state of hidden sectors that are gravitationally coupled to the inflaton. If the hidden sector breaks supersymmetry independently, its fields cannot be stabilized during cosmological evolution of the inflaton. We show that both the subsequent dynamical mixing between sectors as well as the lightest mass of the hidden sector are set by the scale of supersymmetry breaking in the hidden sector. The true cosmological eta-parameter arises from a linear combination of the lightest mode of the hidden sector with the inflaton. Generically, either the true eta deviates considerably from the naïve eta implied by the inflaton sector alone, or one has to consider a multifield model. Only if the lightest mass in the hidden sector is much larger than the inflaton mass and if the inflaton mass is much larger than the scale of hidden sector supersymmetry breaking, is the effect of the hidden sector on the slow-roll dynamics of the inflaton negligible.
