Crystal Symmetry of Stripe Ordered La1.88Sr0.12CuO4

We present a combined x-ray and neutron diffraction study of the stripe ordered superconductor \lscox{0.12}. The average crystal structure is consistent with the orthorhombic $Bmab$ space group as commonly reported in the literature. This structure however is not symmetry compatible with a second order phase transition into the stripe order phase, and, as we report here numerous Bragg peaks forbidden in the $Bmab$ space group are observed. We have studied and analysed these $Bmab$-forbidden Bragg reflections. Fitting of the diffraction intensities yields monoclinic lattice distortions that are symmetry consistent with charge stripe order.

Resonant Soft X-Ray Scattering on LaPt$_2$Si$_2$

X-ray absorption (XAS) and Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) spectra of LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ single crystal at the Si L and La N edges are presented. The data are interpreted in terms of density functional theory, showing that the Si spectra can be described in terms of Si $s$ and $d$ local partial density of states (LPDOS), and the La spectra are due to quasi-atomic local $4f$ excitations. Calculations show that Pt $d$-LPDOS dominates the occupied states, and a sharp localized La $f$ state is found in the unoccupied states, in line with the observations.

Magnetotransport of dirty-limit van Hove singularity quasiparticles

Tuning of electronic density-of-states singularities is a common route to unconventional metal physics. Conceptually, van Hove singularities are realized only in clean two-dimensional systems. Little attention has therefore been given to the disordered (dirty) limit. Here, we provide a magnetotransport study of the dirty metamagnetic system calcium-doped strontium ruthenate. Fermi liquid properties persist across the metamagnetic transition, but with an unusually strong variation of the Kadowaki-Woods ratio. This is revealed by a strong decoupling of inelastic electron scattering and electronic mass inferred from density-of-state probes. We discuss this Fermi liquid behavior in terms of a magnetic field tunable van Hove singularity in the presence of disorder. More generally, we show how dimensionality and disorder control the fate of transport properties across metamagnetic transitions.

Polytypism and Superconductivity in the NbS$_2$ System

We report on the phase formation and the superconducting properties in the NbS$_2$ system. Specifically, we have performed a series of standardized solid-state syntheses in this system, which allow us to establish a comprehensive synthesis map for the formation of the two polytypes 2H-NbS$_2$ and 3R-NbS$_2$, respectively. We show that the identification of two polytypes by means of X-ray diffraction is not always unambiguous. Our physical property measurements on a phase-pure sample of 3R-NbS$_2$, on a phase-pure sample of 2H-NbS$_2$, and a mixed phase sample confirm earlier reports that 2H-NbS$_2$ is a bulk superconductor and that 3R-NbS$_2$ is not a superconductor above $T =$ 1.75 K. Our results clearly show that specific heat measurements, as true bulk measurements, are crucial for the identification of superconducting materials in this and related systems. Our results indicate that for the investigation of van-der-Waals materials great care has to be taken on choosing the synthesis conditions for obtaining phase pure samples.

Surface and bulk melting of small metal clusters

We present an analytical solution to the two-parabola Landau model, applied to melting of metal particles with sizes in the nanoscale range. The results provide an analytical understanding of the recently observed pseudo-crystalline phase of nanoscale Sn particles. Liquid skin formation as a precursor of melting is found to occur only for particles with radii, greater than an explicitly given critical radius. The size effect of the melting temperature and the latent heat has been calculated and quantitative agreement with experiments on Sn particles was found.
